New York Giants Trade HB Ryan Grant to the Packers: The Giants have traded HB Ryan Grant to the Green Bay Packers for what is reported to be a 6th round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

According to The Star-Ledger, the Packers offered one of their place kickers – Dave Rayner – instead of a draft pick, but the Giants declined.

New York Giants Place S Will Demps on Injured Reserve; To Be Cut: The Giants have placed S Will Demps (elbow) on Injured Reserve. According Demps’ agent, this is a temporary move and the Giants will attempt to work out an injury settlement and cut Demps.

“They told us his time with the Giants is over,” said Demps’ agent.

The Star-Ledger is reporting that Demps was not perceived as a “team guy” by the Giants and that the team was not happy with the fact that he chose to workout on his own in the offseason.

The Giants also apparently liked the upside of rookie safeties Michael Johnson and Craig Dahl.

“We thought the improvement of those two young kids in the secondary (Johnson and Dahl) had warranted that they have the opportunity to stay,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “Dahl played well the other night (in the preseason finale at New England) in a convincing fashion. It was not just the interception – he had five tackles in the game, played on special teams and did a good job that way. Michael Johnson had the same kind of response the week before. It’s just a shame he didn’t get to play the other night (because of a hamstring injury). He had the same kind of performance the week before, which was an eye-opener for us. We think both guys will be good on special teams.”

New York Giants Waive 21 Players: The Giants have waived the following players:

  • QB Tim Hasselbeck
  • WR Brandon London
  • WR Kevin McMahan
  • TE Charles Davis
  • OC Todd Londot
  • OT Jon Dunn
  • OT Justin Jones
  • OG Matt Lentz
  • OG Ryan Keenan
  • DE Tommy Davis
  • DE Marquies Gunn
  • DT Jonas Seawright
  • DT Tui Alailefaleula
  • LB Tyson Smith
  • LB James Davis
  • CB E.J. Underwood
  • CB Gerrick McPhearson
  • CB Darren Barnett
  • S J.R. Reed
  • PK Josh Huston
  • P Cory Ohnesorge

Londot was officially waived/injured.

The roster stands at 52 players. The final spot is for DE Michael Strahan, who is still on the Reserve/Did-Not-Report List, but who is expected to return tomorrow.

“We’ll continue to go for (players) as we go through these lists when the cuts come out,” Coughlin said.

“(Final cut-down day) was especially (tough) this year, because I really did enjoy working with this group of young men,” Coughlin said. “There were guys that really went about their business in the right way. They had a good attitude. They worked hard. They certainly represented the New York Giants well throughout the preseason. That always makes it difficult. Then you have a few individuals that have given great effort and spent tremendous time and energy trying to improve themselves. You always recognize when guys are able to make that kind of a commitment to try to be good at their profession. It’s always an interesting comparison between those that work and those that don’t and I feel strongly about this group.”

All eight of the Giants’ 2007 draft picks made the team.

Coughlin on TE Michael Matthews making the team: “Michael Matthews is a guy who came into a situation where we really are in need of depth at that position. He’s demonstrated the ability to play not only tight end, but the move tight end, plus he can take snaps at fullback as well. He’s made himself a versatile player and we’ve been able to take advantage of that. Plus, he plays special teams. So he finds himself in a number of spots here at the end, and the more-you-can-do theory comes to point.”

Coughlin on cutting Hasselbeck: “Anytime you have a guy the quality of Tim Hasselbeck, it’s a difficult decision to make. He brings so much to the locker room. He’s a solid, solid character young man. He’s a guy you really admire for the way he goes to work. He’s been a big plus in the quarterback meeting room with Eli and done a great job with that.”

Giants Waive Two Off of Injured Reserve: The Giants have waived DT Marcus Bell (knee) and DE Charrod Taylor (foot) off of Injured Reserve.

They’re doing the right things and I’m able to throw the ball on time. We’re not sitting back there holding it and waiting for guys to get open. We’re making fast decisions and getting the ball out.”
