MRI for Left Guard Rich Seubert: The only injury reported by the Giants was to LG Rich Seubert (knee). He underwent an MRI yesterday. No word yet on the results. "Seubert will have an MRI (on Monday) on a knee," said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. "And hopefully that is not going to be something that will keep him down. That guy has been a tremendous source of inspiration to everybody. The way he has played and the way he has come back from a very, very serious injury. He tells me that he is going to be ready to go. When he has done that in the past he has followed through with it."
Upcoming Team Schedule: After arriving back at Giants Stadium at 3:00AM yesterday, the Giants players were back at the stadium on Monday for strength training and conditioning, as well as a team meeting. The Giants have been designated the road team for Super Bowl XLII.
DE Michael Strahan and WR Amani Toomer are the only players remaining from the Giants team that lost Super Bowl XXXV to the Baltimore Ravens.
The Giants are 4-0 in NFC Championship Games, with victories in 1986, 1990, 2000, and 2007. Both the 1990 and 2007 Championship Games were won by the Giants on the road on the game’s final kick.
The Giants are the lowest-seeded (#5) NFC team to reach the Super Bowl since the revised playoff format in 1990.
The Giants are just the fourth team since the 1970 merger to reach the Super Bowl after starting the season 0-2. The 1993 Cowboys and the 1996 and 2001 Patriots were the others.
The Giants are the ninth Wild Card team to reach the Super Bowl since the merger.
The Giants have joined the 1985 Patriots and the 2005 Steelers as the only teams to win three straight post-season road games to reach the Super Bowl.
The Giants have improved their post-season record to 19-23, including 6-14 on the road. This is the first time in their history that the Giants have won three consecutive post-season road games.
The Giants are 1-2 in post-season overtime games. They lost the 1958 NFL Championship to the Baltimore Colts and a 1989 NFC Divisional Playoff to the Los Angeles Rams in overtime.
The temperature at game time was minus-one degree with winds of 12 miles-an-hour – a wind chill of minus-23. That made it the coldest game in Giants’ history. The previous coldest game was the 1962 NFL Championship Game – played in Yankee Stadium on Dec. 30, 1962 – when the temperature was 13 degrees with 40 mile-per-hour winds, creating a wind chill of minus-11.
In terms of temperature alone, this was the third-coldest NFL game on record. At the famed Ice Bowl between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys on December 31, 1967, it was 13 below zero at kickoff (minus-46 wind chill). In the 1981 Chargers-Bengals AFC Championship Game in Cincinnati, it was nine below.
The Giant did not sack Favre, the first time since November 20, 2006 at Jacksonville they did not have a sack. This is their first victory in a game in which they did not record a sack since November 20, 2005 against Philadelphia.
With three victories this month, Coughlin has moved to second among Giants head coaches in post-season wins. Only Bill Parcells, who had eight, is ahead of him. Coughlin joins Parcells and Jim Fassel as the coaches who have led the Giants to the Super Bowl.
Eli Manning improved to 3-2 as a starting quarterback in the post-season. He is just the third Giants quarterback to win as many as three post-season games in the Giants Stadium era (since 1976). Phil Simms won six post-season games from 1984 through 1993 and Jeff Hostetler won three in 1990.
WR Plaxico Burress set a Giants post-season record with 11 receptions, one more than WR Ike Hilliard had in the 2000 championship game against the Vikings.
The Giants-Packers game received a 31.7 overnight rating on FOX, the highest for an NFL conference championship game since 1996. Sunday’s game received the highest rating for any television broadcast since the Indianapolis Colts’ 29-17 win over the Bears in last year’s Super Bowl.
