Monday Injury Report: The following players were injured against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday:
QB Eli Manning (foot): The Giants released the following statement yesterday evening:
“Eli Manning underwent an MRI examination of his right foot this afternoon at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. The test results showed that Manning has an injury to the plantar fascia and has soreness and swelling in the heel/arch area on the bottom of his foot. The injury was most likely caused when Manning got up on his toes as he dropped back and attempted to pass to Steve Smith in the fourth quarter of yesterday’s game in Kansas City. ‘Eli will continue to receive treatment, and he will be day to day as we prepare for Sunday’s game,’ said the team’s Vice President of Medical Services Ronnie Barnes.”
“The doctor said it’s not as serious an injury as he’s seen before where the whole foot is hurting,” said Manning yesterday on a radio show. “It’s just kind of a portion of it. The doctor didn’t really give me a time frame.” The Daily News reports that this type of injury can take months to heal.
Manning said the injury could impact his mechanics. “That’s part of the reason the trainers didn’t want me going in the game the other day,” said Manning. “When you do have an injury, you start doing things a little differently. You start tweaking the way you step into a throw, and all of a sudden, instead of using your legs to make a throw or push off with your legs, you’re using your arm and you could make things worse. I’ve got to be conscious of that this week in practice and how things are going. I have to make sure I’m not out there making my shoulder tired or getting bad mechianics, using too much arm and getting a sore elbow or shoulder or whatever. I just have to be smart this week in practice in what I’m doing and just take it day by day, hoping for the best.”
“That’s the first question I asked,” said Manning. “‘Can I make this worse? If I go out and run tomorrow, can I injure it more than it is now?’ (The doctor) said, ‘Obviously, anything’s possible,’ but he said with this injury, whatever you do the first time is usually as bad as it’s going to be.”
According to press reports, the Giants have also confirmed that Manning has been suffering from plantar fasciitis, a similar and painful condition that involves irritation of the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot, for the past few weeks.
HB Ahmad Bradshaw (ankle): “The ankle is sore this morning,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “They put him right back in the boot.”
TE Kevin Boss (ankle): “He is having a little trouble today,” said Coughlin. “We’ll see if maybe he – hopefully it is day to day. I can’t even tell you that right now.”
LB Michael Boley (knee): Boley was using crutches yesterday. “Boley’s knee was stiff last night on the plane and they are sending him for tests,” said Coughlin. The Star-Ledger and Bergen Record are reporting that Boley has been told that he may miss a few games due to the injury, while The New York Post is reporting that Boley may miss two games.
DT Chris Canty (calf), CB Aaron Ross (hamstring), and WR Domenik Hixon (knee) did not play against the Chiefs. “I just have to wait,” said Coughlin. “Their status does not change normally from the end of last week until they get the full workup tomorrow morning in the training room. The trainers usually – on Tuesday – they run them and do things with them and will put them through some things on the inside so they can project. So until that happens, it is the same status as I’m being told as it was at the end of last week.”
