More on the Recently-Completed, Player-Organized Mini-Camp: As previously reported, last week the New York Giants’ players organized an impromptu mini-camp at a local New Jersey high school that was relatively well attended.

“It’s kind of the best we can do under the circumstances,” said QB Eli Manning. “It’s not great work, but it’s better than doing nothing.”

“It was really to just kind of get some of the young guys out there, to get (WR) Jerrel (Jernigan) and some of the draft picks, to get them to meet some of the guys, learn a little bit of the terminology,” Manning said. “You get worried. You don’t know how long this lockout is going to be, where if it goes too long they’ll never be able to catch up and it’ll be a wash of a year for them. You’re trying to prevent that.”

“You can get your timing in training camp,” Manning said. “We were throwing routes and we got decent work in the number of days we’ve thrown. We’ve got guys that have been there before. I was trying get with Jerrel and some of the new guys and get them caught up some more (so) they’re doing the right thing. That’s really what it is. It’s kind of also the trust issue. You’ve got to trust a guy to run the right route, get the right depth, read the coverage the correct way. That’s kind of where the timing comes, just guys doing what they’re supposed to be doing.”

“You see it all over the league and I didn’t expect anything different from our players,” said General Manager Jerry Reese. “You always worry about guys’ injuries, but I think those guys know how to take care of themselves. I don’t think they’re going full speed, the kind of speed to have injuries. Injuries happen, but hopefully they’re being mindful of that and take care of that.”

“I’m glad to see there’s an attempt on the part of the players to do some things together,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “A big part of what we do in the offseason is team building. We haven’t had the opportunity to do that. Any time you get to spend together is a good thing.”
