New York Giants Slap Franchise Tag on Steve Weatherford: The Giants have placed the Franchise Tag on P Steve Weatherford, who was due to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13. The Franchise Tag ensures that the Giants will have the right to match any offer that Weatherford may receive from another team. If the Giants do not match that offer, the Giants would receive two 1st round draft picks as compensation.

“I’m super excited to know that I will be with the Giants for at least one more season,” Weatherford said. “This is a great franchise and a great organization, really the best I’ve been with. so it’s very exciting to know that I will be back. I think the franchise tag is a step that needed to be taken to continue to work together on a long term deal. I want to be with the Giants for a long time and I really think the feeling is mutual, so hopefully something can get worked out long term and I can be a Giant for another four, five or 10 years.”

The cost of the Franchise Tag is not cheap for a punter, approximately $2.6 million for the 2012 season. The Giants still have the ability to negotiate a longer term deal with Weatherford. The Giants have used the Franchise Tag only two other times, once on HB Brandon Jacobs and once on OT Jumbo Elliott.

Mario Manningham Update: According to soon-to-be unrestricted free agent WR Mario Manningham, there has been no progress with the Giants on a new contract.

“I don’t wanna go nowhere but if it’s somewhere else, that’s’ where my path continues,” said Manningham. “I don’t know. It’s not up to me. I want to stay…It’s a business, too. You’ve got to look at it like that. That’s just how it is. It’s a business. Their decision might come down to you. You have to look out for you and your family. That’s how it is.”
