Giants Clobber Packers, But Andre Brown Breaks Leg: The New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers 38-10 on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium. The win improved the Giants’ overall record to 7-4.

The bad news for the Giants was HB Andre Brown broke the fibula in one of his legs and is done for the season.

The game was more one-sided than the final statistics demonstrate. The Giants out-gained the Packers in first downs (23-16), total net yards (390-317), net yards rushing (147-116), net yards passing (243-201), red zone efficiency (83%-0%), and time of possession (31:13-28:47). The Giants did not turn the football over while the Packers turned it over twice.

The Giants took command of the game in the first half, scoring five times on their seven first-half possessions:

  • First Drive: 6 plays, 74 yards resulting in a 2-yard touchdown run by Brown.
  • Second Drive: 3 plays and a punt.
  • Third Drive: 8 plays, 55 yards resulting in a 16-yard touchdown pass from QB Eli Manning to WR Rueben Randle.
  • Fourth Drive: 4 plays, 8 yards resulting in a 43-yard field field goal by PK Lawrence Tynes.
  • Fifth Drive: 8 plays, 61 yards resulting in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Manning to WR Victor Cruz.
  • Sixth Drive: 3 plays and a punt.
  • Seventh Drive: 2 plays, 23 yards resulting in a 13-yard touchdown run by HB Ahmad Bradshaw.

Meanwhile, the Giants’ defense held the high-flying Packers’ offense to 10 first-half points, the big play being a 61-yard touchdown pass from QB Aaron Rodgers to WR Jordy Nelson on Green Bay’s first possession. The Packers only scored on one more of their 11 total possessions, a 10-play, 62-yard drive that ended with a field goal. The Giants’ defense also set up the Giants’ offense on a short field on their fourth and seventh possessions of the first half with an interception by CB Corey Webster and a forced fumbled by DE Osi Umenyiora, leading directly to 10 points.

At the half, the Giants led 31-10.

The second half was rather anti-climatic as the Giants scored the only second-half points on their second possession of the half with a 6-play, 53-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Manning to WR Hakeem Nicks. On the Giants’ other two drives of the half, New York gained one first down and punted on their first drive. Then on their third drive, the Giants took over nine minutes off of the clock by moving the ball 85 yards in 17 plays before turning the ball over on downs at the Green Bay 1-yard line with less than five minutes to play.

Green Bay was shut out in the second half. Their first two possessions of the second half gained a total of 15 net yards and two first downs before punting. They drove 60 yards in 11 plays on their third possession befre turning the ball over on downs at the Giants’ 14-yard line early in the 4th quarter. The Packers also picked up 45 yards in garbage time on their last possession before being forced to punt.

Offensively, Manning finished the game 16-of-30 for 249 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. WR Hakeem Nicks caught five passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Brown rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries before breaking his leg. Bradshaw rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Defensively, the Giants sacked Rodgers five times with LB Mathias Kiwanuka (2), LB Chase Blackburn, Umenyiora, and DT Chris Canty picking up the sacks. Webster intercepted a pass and Umenyiora forced a fumble that DE Jason Pierre-Paul recovered.

Injury Report – Brown Done for Season, Phillips Re-Injures Knee: HB Andre Brown broke the fibula in one of his legs in the 4th quarter of the game and is done for the season. “Yeah, he broke his fibula,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “It takes a lot off of the win, to be honest with you.”

S Kenny Phillips re-injured his right knee in the 3rd quarter of the game and did not return. Phillips missed six games before this one with an MCL injury to the right knee. “I’m not worried at all,” said Phillips after the game. “I probably could have continued to play, but with the score how it was, I figured it wouldn’t make any sense to go out there and try to hurt it some more…I was like ‘here we go again,’ but I got to the sidelines and the doctors took a look at it. It feels pretty good right now. I didn’t want to take that chance to go back out there and miss the next week.”

Coughlin was more non-committal about Phillips. “I don’t know,” said Coughlin. “We’re going to have to see about that.”

OT David Diehl left the game in the 2nd quarter with a burner.
