Webster Takes a Pay Cut and Baas Re-Structures: According to press reports, CB Corey Webster has agreed to a $3 million pay cut in salary in 2013. Webster was scheduled to make $7 million in the final year of his contract and now will make $4 million in salary. Webster’s overall cap number in 2013 is now $6.845 million. Press reports also say that had Webster not accepted the pay cut, the Giants would have released him.
OC David Baas did not accept a pay cut, but agreed to re-structure his contract for the second year in a row. Baas agreed to convert $3 million of his 2013 base salary into a signing bonus. This move will save the Giants $2 million against the 2012 salary cap but will increase Baas’ cap hit in 2014 and 2015. Baas cap figure is now over $8 million in both 2014 and 2015.
The Giants are now believed to be about $8-9 million under the $123 million salary cap. Free agency begins on March 12.
Giants Re-Sign Trattou, Tracy, and Cordle: According to The Bergen Record, the Giants have re-signed exclusive rights free agent DE Justin Trattou, DE Adrian Tracy, and OC Jim Cordle. Trattou reportedly signed a 1-year deal.
Phillips Set to Hit Open Market: According to The Daily News, the Giants had hoped to re-sign S Kenny Phillips before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on March 12. But the paper is reporting that the Giants’ current offer to Phillips is not enough to prevent him from testing the open market.
Giants Want to Re-Sign Boothe and Bennett: According to The Daily News, the Giants would like to re-sign soon-to-be unrestricted free agents OG Kevin Boothe and TE Martellus Bennett before both hit the open market on March 12. However, the paper says deals are not imminent.
Newsday is reporting that talks between the Giants and Boothe’s agent have been “positive.”
“I remain in contact with the Giants, we both have shared our ideas on Martellus being a Giant,’’ Bennett’s agent told The New York Post. “I am certain we will continue those talks.”
Giants Interested in Charles Woodson?: According to ESPN, the Giants are one of four teams who have expressed interest in 36-year old S Charles Woodson, who was recently cut by the Green Bay Packers. The other three teams are the Seahawks, Dolphins, and Jets.
Steven Jackson Has Some Interest in the Giants: HB Steven Jackson, who voided the final year of his contract with the St. Louis Rams, said yesterday that he has some interest in the New York Giants.
“The Giants are a great, great organization and I was a part of the draft class with Eli Manning so I definitely have been following his career for quite some time now,” Jackson said. “They have a great young runner. If they are interested I sure would listen.”
But Jackson does not sound overly interested in splitting time with HB David Wilson or any other running back. “Well, that’s where a very open dialogue has to take place,” Jackson said. “I’ve opted out of my position of being with the (Rams) and being comfortable because I want to continue to still be the bell cow. So that’s how I want teams to look at me. That’s how I’m going to shop myself and we’ll cross that bridge when we get there if that’s not the feedback that we’re receiving.”
