MONDAY BEN MCADOO CONFERENCE CALL…
New York Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo addressed the media by conference call on Monday to discuss the team’s 27-23 victory over the Baltimore Ravens:

McAdoo: We’ll start on the defensive side of the ball. I thought what we did well, we showed great fight early in the ballgame when we were struggling as a team. I thought the goal line stand after the big play was gritty. A lot of guys showed up giving extra effort. We held them to a field goal after a second half sudden change, which was huge in the game. I thought we focused on what we can control at the end of the game with the penalties. We kept playing football, not worried about how the game was being called. Third down was improved. We were 28 percent there. What we need to work on moving forward, we need to shore up the run defense. We have to look the ball into the tuck when the ball is in the air. Had a chance to come up with some turnovers.

Offensively, what we did well, we overcame a slow start. We were 3-for-3 on fourth down, which was huge in the ballgame.  I thought we played with some good tempo once we got started and our pass protection improved. What we need to work on, we had two turnovers and then an additional one at the end of the half trying to get the ball out of bounds. We need to get the run game going.

Special teams, what we did well, I thought the punt team did a nice job flipping the field. Field goal protection was a positive versus a good rush outlet. Kickoff coverage after the penalty at the end of the ballgame, did a nice job with the kick, got the returner down on the 32-yardline. What we need to work on, again, we had the penalty on punt return. The defense stopped them afterwards, but it cost us 28, 29 yards, I believe, in field position. The punt return fundamentals and the finish needs to improve there.

As a team moving forward, we need to eliminate the bad football that’s on film. Lining up offside, unsportsmanlike conduct that forces us to kick from the 20. A drag route in two-minute, we have to get the first down there. Dropping a back in man coverage. There’s things we need to clean up that are going to come back and bite us if we don’t.

Q: Leon Hall has been in the league for a while now but before coming here he hadn’t done a lot of blitzing, what makes you think he can do it here?

A: We ask all our guys in the secondary to be able to contribute as a blitzer. He has done a nice job of it. He hasn’t done much of it, but he’s done a nice job learning it. He’s being productive.

Q: How’s Odell’s hip?

A: He’s down there getting some treatment. We’ll know more when we go and hit the field with him.

Q: You expect him to be able to get on the practice field?

A: We’ll see early in the week. I’m sure he’s going to be sore.

Q: What’s your approach to the London trip? Is it much different for you?

A: It’s going to be a little bit different at the end of the week, for sure. When we come to finalizing the plan on all three phases, a lot of that will be done on the plane or in London. We’ll have the foundation for everything set early. We just have to be smart.

Q: Any drastic difference? Scouting the surroundings, the stadium? Food?

A: We’ve done all of our homework there. It’s not the first time the Giants have been over there. It’s the first time for me. We have some coaches on the staff who have a bunch of experience. As far as the food goes, we’ve done a lot of our homework there. Made sure we’ve bridged the gap, so to speak. We need to do a good job of getting our rest early in the week. We’ve pushed back the starting time on Wednesday and Thursday. They’ll get the chance to sleep in Tuesday like they always do and today. Just to help catch up on some sleep as much as possible.

Q: You said you’d get some game plan work on the plane, is that normal?

A: Everyone usually gets some type of work done on a plane on a road game. With it being Thursday night, it’s still pretty early in the week. We’ll have some things we will need to brush up on and tighten up.

Q: Do you keep the players on the same schedule Friday, Saturday and Sunday?

A: We’ll change some things up on Friday. We’ll have our normal Fresh Friday. Just make sure we get them moving right away after we sleep on the plane. Get them going and moving. Give them a chance to recover. Get them off their feet. Saturday, we’ll change up the afternoon a little bit. Give them more time to spend with their teammates. If they want to take a nap, give them some time to do that. We will be smart with our meeting time on Saturday.

Q: What did you see on the pass interference late in the game?

A: We’re going to send that in and get some feedback from the league. Get their interpretation.

Q: Reaction to Odell penalty for taking his helmet off?

A: He came up to me right after. We had a discussion about it. Can’t have it. He knows that. He went out and wanted to fire up the kickoff coverage and the defense. He knows we can’t have it.

Q: Where do you stand on pass interference being a reviewable play?

A: I think it’s an interesting topic. It’ll be interesting to see where it goes. It seems like replay is a topic that comes up each and every offseason. Right now, it’s not, so in the offseason we’ll review it.

Q: The pass rush has been struggling. What did you do differently and how would you view their play?

A: We had some good rushes out there. There were some times we mixed in some pressure. We had them drop a little bit and we had them rush. They certainly spent a lot of time from a chip perspective trying to account for the defensive end, whether it was a tight end or a back. We took a step forward.

Q: In addition to the penalty of Odell, he had a couple of sideline fun moments with the net. Are you okay with that?

A: We need to keep our focus on the ballgame.

Q: What do you mean?

A: We, as a team, need to focus on the ballgame.

Q: What went into the decision to not punish Ereck Flowers one snap for what happened in the locker room after last week’s game?

A: We decided to handle all the discipline in-house. That’s how we handled it.

Q: Can you confirm if there was any discipline?

A: Everything that we handled with Ereck was in-house. We’re going to keep it in-house.

Q: The NFL was at the facility investigating last week. Have they told you where they stand?

A: No. I’ve gotten no feedback on the investigation.

Q: Zak DeOssie, Trevin Wade and Keenan Robinson updates?

A: Robinson is getting looked at. Zak is pretty sore right now. Two guys that are pretty sore. I don’t have any more information on either of the two.

Q: Did you have to get your passport for this trip? Have you been out of the country before?

A: Yes. When I was with the 49ers, we played in Mexico City against the Cardinals. I was part of that trip there. Yes, I had to get my passport updated. I’m not much of a world traveler.

Q: Is that a process you had to take care of for your players?

A: We took care of that as we reported for training camp.

WHAT’S UP NEXT…
Player interviews will be held on Tuesday. The Giants return to practice at 12:10PM on Wednesday.
