Giants Defeat 49ers, Move to 5-1

Giants Defeat 49ers, Move to 5-1: The Giants defeated the San Francisco 49ers 29-17 earlier today at Giants Stadium.  The win moves the Giants to 5-1 as the team remains in sole possession of first place in the NFC East.

The story of the game was a Giants’ defense that held the 49ers to 10 points and 35 yards rushing while accruing two interceptions, one fumble recovery, six sacks, and a safety.

The 49ers were held to three-and-outs on their first two possessions of the game with San Francisco QB J.T. O’Sullivan being sacked by DE Dave Tollefson and DT Fred Robbins.

Meanwhile, on their second possession, the Giants drove 54 yards in four plays to take a 7-0 lead as HB Brandon Jacobs scored from 26 yards out.

The 49ers responded with an 8-play, 44-yard drive that set up a successful 40-yard field goal.  Giants 7 - 49ers 3.

Back came the Giants as New York moved the football 73 yards in eight plays.  The Giants were aided by 51 yards in penalties, including a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty and a 31-yard pass interference penalty.  The drive ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Jacobs to extend New York’s lead to 14-3.

Nevertheless, the San Francisco responded again, this time driving 74 yards in six plays, the drive culminating in a 30-yard touchdown pass against CB Aaron Ross.  Giants 14 - 49ers 10.

The Giants’ next two offensive possessions ended with punts as did the 49er’s next possession.  However, late in the second quarter, at the very start of the 49ers’  sixth possession of the game, S Michael Johnson picked off O’Sullivan and returned the pick 18 yards to the San Francisco 9-yard line.  The Giants were unable to get the ball into the end zone and were forced to settle for a 21-yard field goal.  Giants 17 - 49ers 10.

With under two minutes to play before halftime, the 49ers moved the ball to the Giants’ 19-yard line with 22 seconds to play.  But Johnson intercepted O’Sullivan for the second time, this time in the end zone, ending the threat.

The Giants received the football to start the second half, but punted after picking up only one first down.  On the third play of the 49ers’ opening possession of the second half, the 49ers botched the handoff to the back and DE Mathias Kiwanuka recovered the football at the San Francisco 18-yard line.  Four plays later, QB Eli Manning hit WR Plaxico Burress for a 6-yard touchdown pass.  Giants 24 - 49ers 10.

After a punt by the 49ers, the Giants received the ball again and drove from their 20-yard line to the San Francisco 17-yard line.  However, PK John Carney’s 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked and returned 74 yards for a touchdown, cutting the Giants’ lead to 24-17.

Starting at their own 41-yard line on the ensuing possession, the Giants drove 29 yards in nine plays to set up a successful 48-yard field goal by Carney to extend the lead to 27-17.

Both teams then exchanged punts.  With just over five minutes to play, the 49ers began their fourth drive of the second half.  On the first play of the drive, DE Justin Tuck stripped the ball out of O’Sullivan’s hands, the ball bounced backwards to the end zone where a 49er player kicked it past the end line for a safety and a 29-17 advantage for the Giants.

The Giants then went three and out and the 49ers turned the ball over on downs as O’Sullivan was sacked by Tuck again during the possession.  The Giants then kneeled on the football to end the game.

Defensively, the Giants held the 49ers to 35 yards rushing (and only 11 yards rushing by HB Frank Gore), forced three fumbles (two by Tuck, one by LB Chase Blackburn), and recovered another (by Kiwanuka).  Michael Johnson intercepted two passes.  And sacks were accrued by Tuck (2), Robbins, Tollefson, Blackburn, and DT Barry Cofield.

“Turnovers for us is the name of the game,” said Tuck.  “Once you get one you start getting that blood in the water type of feeling.  Michael (Johnson) did a great job and we fed off of that and we came up with some big stops because of our turnovers.  Defensive line kind of felt left out after Michael’s two interceptions.  So we definitely wanted to get some turnovers, too.  Any time you win the turnover battle you stand a good chance of winning the game.”

“It was just a matter of being more intense and more focused, and wanting it more,” said Kiwanuka.  “We definitely got embarrassed as a team and especially as a defensive line last week.  And that is why we were relentless and not letting that happen again.  The defensive backs really stepped up their game today.  We definitely had a couple of cover sacks.  Just like we lost last week as a team, we won this week as a team.”

Offensively, Manning finished the game 16-of-31 for 161 yards, 1 touchdown, and 0 interceptions.  Jacobs carried the ball 17 times for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns.  HB Ahmad Bradshaw chipped in with 28 yards on 8 carries and HB Derrick Ward with 19 yards on 4 carries.  WR Steve Smith was the leading receiver with 4 catches for 39 yards.  Ward caught 3 passes for 50 yards, WR Amani Toomer 3 passes for 31 yards, and Burress 3 passes for 24 yards and a touchdown.

“I felt like we bounced back well enough to win the game but as far as production with our offense, I think it could have been better,” said Jacobs.  “I’m not trying to say anything bad, and we did a good job.  But there was definitely a lot of room for improvement.  We are happy with the win, but we know ourselves as a team that we have to capitalize more when our defense sets us up.”

“We are always happy with a win, but definitely not satisfied with our performance,” said TE Kevin Boss.  “I felt like we kind of left some points on the field when we could have taken advantage of some key opportunities.  But we are taking it one game at a time right now.  This is a good win after last week.  Mike Johnson came up with some huge picks in some crucial situations and Justin Tuck causing the fumble which resulted in a safety.”

“Every time you win a game it is a good feeling,” said Toomer.  “But I know we still have a long way to go yet.  We definitely didn’t play our best game.  The bottom line in the results is that you win.  We are real honest with ourselves and we know what corrections we have to make to greatly improve.  We weren’t as crisp as we would have liked to have been.  I wouldn’t say that we are frustrated, but it wasn’t a step forward or a step back.  It was a step laterally for us.  We definitely have to get better.”

Pierce May Not Play Against 49ers; Kehl to Start and Possibly Blackburn

Injury Report - Pierce May Not Play Against 49ers: LB Antonio Pierce (quad) did not practice again and is officially listed as “questionable” for the game against the San Francisco 49ers. Pierce himself sounded pessimistic about being able to play against the 49ers on Sunday.  When asked if Pierce set himself back last Monday night, Head Coach Tom Coughlin responded, “Well, it didn’t help, obviously. He was strained and he was trying to go and he was trying to do everything he could, but he was really incapacitated, to a certain extent. He just didn’t feel like he could really drive. “

“We’ll have to make that decision at game time (on whether he will play),” said Coughlin. “The doctors will be in on that, and so will A.P.”  If Pierce does not play, Chase Blackburn will start at middle linebacker.

LB Gerris Wilkinson (knee) did not practice and will not play against the 49ers.  Bryan Kehl will start at weakside linebacker.  OC Shaun O’Hara (toe) practiced again and is “probable.” DE Dave Tollefson (knee) was limited in practice but is “probable.”

LB Antonio Pierce (quad) and LB Gerris Wilkinson (knee) did not practice.

Coughlin Says No Decision Has Been Made on Kicking Situation: Contrary to what PK Lawrence Tynes told the media on Wednesday, Head Coach Tom Coughlin said yesterday that no decision has yet been made on who will handle the place-kicking chores on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

“I haven’t decided yet who will kick this week,” Coughlin said. “This week is like every other recent week. I am going to let these guys kick all week and I will make a decision at the end of the week.”

Manning Practices; O’Hara and Pierce Do Not

Injury Report: OC Shaun O’Hara (toe infection), LB Antonio Pierce (quad), and LB Gerris Wilkinson (knee) did not participate in yesterday’s light practice.

“O’Hara is hopefully going to get out (of the hospital Thursday) morning,” Head Coach Tom Coughlin said. “He is over there fighting and scratching to get out, but so far they have kept him. We expect him to be out tomorrow morning.”

Pierce is day-to-day, but Wilkinson will miss some time. “Wilkinson will be a while probably,” Coughlin said. “I am not going to give you any number of weeks, but chances are he won’t make it this week.”

QB Eli Manning (chest) and S James Butler (biceps) practiced.  “I feel good,” said Manning. “(There is) just a little soreness, but it didn’t affect the practice or throwing or keep me from doing anything I need to do.”

WR David Tyree, who is currently on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List, practiced for the first time this season.  Tyree underwent knee surgery in April and missed all of training camp and the preseason.  “I’m 100 percent,” said Tyree. “The daily pounding, we’ll see how that goes. But I haven’t had any pain, any swelling, and I’m excited about that.”

Tynes to Kick on Sunday: PK Lawrence Tynes, who has not played since the preseason opener due to a knee injury, told reporters yesterday that he will be the placekicker on Sunday. “I’m very anxious just to get going,” said Tynes. “It’s been a while. I feel very good about where I am. I just want to keep up doing what John’s done for us the previous five games. I’m looking forward to keeping that streak he has going.”

Article on QB Eli Manning: Blitzing Defenses Often Bring Out Worst in New York Giants’ Manning by Mike Garafolo of The Star-Ledger

Notes: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Giants’ two takeaways are the team’s lowest figure through the first five games of a season since turnovers became an official statistic in the mid-1930s.

Manning and Others Injured in Loss to Browns

Manning and Others Injured in Loss to Browns: QB Eli Manning suffered a chest injury in the loss against the Browns on Monday night when Manning was slammed to the ground by a Cleveland defensive player early in the second quarter.

“He got hit and then he was driven into the ground,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin.  “His chest was bothering him after the game, so he was in some pain there, but I don’t have any information other than that today.  He was in the training room and we will see…I don’t know (if it will keep him out of practice).  I don’t know anything yet.  They are going to do all the tests and that type of thing.”

However, later in the evening, Manning said an MRI and x-rays revealed no serious injury.

“Just a little sore and kind of on the left side, left shoulder/chest area. Just some soreness,’ Manning said. “Shaun Rogers is a big man. He gave me a good hit and kind of pile-drove me into the ground. I don’t think it affected my play.”

“Nothing major,” said Manning. “Nothing that’s going to keep me out this week. We have practice tomorrow, so I’ll be at practice going at full speed. Just some soreness. That’s the major issue…Nothing broken, no sprains, nothing with the (throwing) shoulder. It’s all on the left side anyway. I have good movement, I have my strength. It’s really just a little banged up. There’s not a technical word for it, I don’t think. It’s nothing that should cause anything to my throwing motion at all and shouldn’t affect anything.”

Also in the loss to the Browns, LB Antonio Pierce aggravated his quad injury, LB Gerris Wilkinson suffered a mild MCL sprain, and S James Butler suffered a biceps injury. “Butler has the continuing strain with the bicep,” said Coughlin. “Wilkinson, it seemed to be a MCL, a mild MCL, and I don’t know where his status will be.  Pierce just has a reoccurrence of the strain that he had last week.”

OC Shaun O’Hara was in the hospital yesterday being treated for an infected toe.

Tyree to Start Practicing: WR David Tyree, who is currently on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List, has been cleared to practice and will start practicing today. That will begin a three-week window where he will be permitted to practice while still being on the PUP.  Once that period is over, the Giants must add him to the 53-man roster, place him on injured reserve, or waive him.

Article on QB Eli Manning: Despite  Super Bowl Win, Eli Still is Learning by Johnette Howard of Newsday

Notes: The trade deadline passed yesterday with the Giants making no trades. The team had reportedly been in contact with the Kansas City Chiefs regarding the services of TE Tony Gonzalez. The New York Post is reporting that the Giants offered the Chiefs a 4th round pick.

The Giants are 18-31-1 on Monday Night Football, including 2-2 under Tom Coughlin.

The loss to Cleveland was an end of the Giants’ 11-game road winning streak (8 regular-season games, 3 post-season games).  The Giant had last lost a road game on September 9, 2007 at Dallas, 45-35.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Monday’s game was the first in which Giants did not force a punt or a turnover in the same game since turnovers were first tracked in the mid-1930s.

Browns Stomp Out Super Bowl Champions

Browns Stomp Out Super Bowl Champions: The New York Giants were soundly beaten by the Cleveland Browns on Monday night 35-14.  The previously undefeated Giants fell to 4-1, but remain in sole possession of first place in the NFC East. It was an all-around poor effort by the Giants’ offense and defense.  The Giants’ offense turned the football over three times and was shut out in the second-half of the game.  Meanwhile, the Giants’ defense surrendered 454 yards of offense, including 310 passing and 144 rushing yards.  In fact, the Giants’ defense never forced a punt.

QB Eli Manning had his first poor game of the season, finishing 18-of-28 for 196 yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions, once of which was returned 94 yards for touchdown.

Each team only had the ball four times in the first half.  Cleveland’s four possessions resulted in a 28-yard field goal (9-play, 69-yard drive), missed field goal (11-play, 37-yard drive), a 4-yard touchdown run (3-play, 74-yard drive), and 22-yard touchdown pass (9-play, 77-yard drive).

New York’s four possessions resulted in an interception (7-play, 41-yard drive), 7-yard touchdown drive by HB Brandon Jacobs (6-play, 58-yard drive), a punt (6-play, 8-yard drive), and a 3-yard touchdown pass to WR Plaxico Burress (10-play, 80-yard drive).

At halftime, the Browns led 17-14.

The number and quality of the possessions for each team was even stranger in the second half.  The Giants only had the football four times in the second half and the Browns only had it three times.  The Giants only ran eight offensive plays in the third quarter.  On the very first offensive play of the second half, Manning was picked off, setting up the Browns’ offense at the Giants’ 46-yard line.  Six plays later, the Browns kicked a 26-yard field goal to take a 20-14 lead.

After picking up two first downs on their ensuing possession, the Giants punted. They never got the ball back until the fourth quarter as Cleveland initiated a 14-play, 87-yard, 8-minute drive that resulted in an 11-yard touchdown pass. Browns 27 - Giants 14.

With a full quarter to play and down by 13 points, the Giants drove to the Cleveland 9-yard line in nine plays.  However, on the tenth snap of the football, Manning was intercepted by CB Eric Wright who returned the football 94 yards for the touchdown to put the game effectively out of reach with just over eight minutes to play.  The successful 2-point conversion gave the Browns a 35-14 advantage.

The final Giants’ drive ended on downs after seven plays.  Cleveland - on their only possession of the fourth quarter - ran out the clock in seven plays and 27 yards.

Offensively, aside from Manning’s poor outing, HB Derrick Ward was the Giants’ leading rusher with 101 yards on 10 carries.  Jacobs added 67 yards on 14 carries.  WR Steve Smith was the leading receiver with 9 catches and 94 yards.  Burress, returning from suspension, only caught four passes for 58 yards.  WR Amani Toomer was shutout.

Defensively, the Giants could neither stop the run or rush the passer.  There were no sacks or forced turnovers.
