BRANDON BROWN REMAINS WITH GIANTS…
Assistant General Manager Brandon Brown will remain with the New York Giants for at least another season. The Los Angeles Chargers and the Carolina Panthers both interviewed Brown twice for their vacant general manager positions. However, the Panthers promoted Assistant General Manger Dan Morgan and the Chargers hired Baltimore Ravens Director of Player Personnel Joe Hortiz as their respective new general managers.

PANTHERS DENY ANOTHER INTERVIEW REQUEST…
The Carolina Panthers have denied the Giants from interviewing another one of their coaches. Earlier this month, the Panthers refused to allow the Giants to interview Special Teams Coordinator and Chris Tabor. The Giants interviewed a number of other candidates instead and hired Jets Special Teams Assistant Michael Ghobrial as the team’s new special teams coordinator.

The Athletic is now reporting that the Panthers have also blocked the Giants from interviewing Ejiro Evero for the team’s vacant defensive coordinator position. The 43-year old Evero served as Carolina’s defensive coordinator in 2023 and the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos in 2022.

As previously reported, the other publicly-known defensive coordinator candidates the Giants have expressed interest in include:

  • Tennessee Titans Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen
  • Los Angeles Chargers Defensive Coordinator Derrick Ansley
  • Miami Dolphins Linebackers Coach Anthony Campanile
  • Buffalo Bills Linebackers Coach Bobby Babich
  • Kansas City Chiefs Linebackers Coach Brendan Daly
  • Baltimore Ravens Defensive Backs Coach Dennard Wilson
  • New York Giants Defensive Backs Coach Jerome Henderson

GIANTS HIRE MICHAEL GHOBRIAL FOR SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR…
The New York Giants have officially hired New York Jets Special Teams Assistant Michael Ghobrial as the team’s new special teams coordinator. Ghobrial replaces Thomas McGaughey, who was fired earlier this month.

The 35-year old Ghobrial has served with the Jets since 2021. Before that, he was the special teams coordinator at the University of Hawaii in 2018-2019 and Washington State University in 2020. Ghobrial’s full coaching bio is available in the Coaching Staff section of the website.

The Giants were publicly known to have interviewed three other candidates, including Seattle Seahawks Special Teams Coordinator Larry Izzo, San Francisco 49ers Assistant Special Teams Coach Matt Harper, and Chicago Bears Assistant Special Teams Coach Carlos Polk.

The Giants had also requested to interview three other special teams coordinators, but were blocked by their respective teams, including Ryan Ficken (Los Angeles Chargers), Marquice Williams (Atlanta Falcons), and Chris Tabor (Carolina Panthers).

ANOTHER SECOND INTERVIEW FOR BRANDON BROWN…
The Los Angeles Chargers have interviewed New York Giants Assistant General Manager Brandon Brown for a second time for their general manager vacancy. The Carolina Panthers have also interviewed Brown twice, but they hired Dan Morgan as their new general manager on Monday.

GIANTS STILL SEARCHING FOR SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR…
The New York Giants have interviewed New York Jets Special Teams Assistant Michael Ghobrial for the team’s special teams coordinator vacancy. Ghobrial has served with the Jets since 2021. Before that, he was the special teams coordinator at the University of Hawaii in 2018-2019 and Washington State University in 2020.

As previously reported, the Giant also interviewed San Francisco 49ers Assistant Special Teams Coach Matt Harper and Chicago Bears Assistant Special Teams Coach Carlos Polk. The team had requested to interview three other special teams coordinators, but were blocked by their respective teams, including Ryan Ficken (Los Angeles Chargers), Marquice Williams (Atlanta Falcons), and Chris Tabor (Carolina Panthers). It is not clear if the Falcons have since unblocked Williams from interviewing with the Giants.

SECOND INTERVIEW FOR BRANDON BROWN…
New York Giants Assistant General Manager Brandon Brown is one of multiple candidates who has been interviewed for a second time by the Carolina Panthers for their general manager vacancy. The Los Angeles Chargers have also expressed interest in Brown, who joined the Giants last year from the front office of the Philadelphia Eagles.

DRAMA OVER WINK MARTINDALE’S DEPARTURE…
New York Giants Defensive Coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale’s departure from the team is still not official. Initial media reports on Monday stated that Martindale had “resigned” from the team in order to pursue other coaching opportunities. Since Martindale is still under contract with the Giants, it was believed this was a mutual parting of the ways.

For background, back in late November, FOX Sports‘ Jay Glazer had reported there was tension between Martindale and Head Coach Brian Daboll and that Martindale was unlikely to remain with the Giants in 2024. Both Daboll and Martindale denied these reports, and on Monday morning Daboll said he “expected” Martindale to return. That changed a few hours later when reports surfaced that Martindale and the Giants had parted ways.

There is now speculation that Martindale’s camp leaked the story to Glazer in November and that Martindale wants the Giants to fire him so he can retain the salary due him in 2024 as well as pick his next destination. At the same time, the Giants want him to resign so they don’t have to pay him and have some say where he is hired next. There is fear the Philadelphia Eagles could hire him as their next defensive coordinator. The Giants may have fired Martindale’s close associates, brothers Drew (outside linebackers coach) and Kevin Wilkins (defensive assistant) in order to prompt Martindale to quit.

So basically, it appears both sides are playing chicken with each other, hoping the other moves first.

GIANTS INTERVIEW OFFENSIVE LINE COACH…
According to The NFL Network, the Giants will interview Las Vegas Raiders Offensive Line Coach Carmen Bricillo for their offensive line coach vacancy. The Giants fired Offensive Line Coach Bobby Johnson on Monday. The Raiders are in the midst of their own general manager and head coach search and have given permission to Bricillo to talk to the Giants.

The 47-year old Bricillo has served as offensive line coach for the Patriots (2021) and Raiders (2022-2023). He was also a coaching assistant (2019) and co-offensive line coach (2020) with the Patriots.

PANTHERS AND CHARGERS INTERESTED IN BRANDON BROWN…
According to media reports, the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers are interested in interviewing New York Giants Assistant General Manager Brandon Brown for their respective general manager vacancies. Both teams have officially requested to interview Brown, who joined the Giants last year from the front office of the Philadelphia Eagles.

JUNE 13, 2023 NEW YORK GIANTS MINI-CAMP REPORT…
The first day of the New York Giants 2-day, mandatory mini-camp was held on Tuesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. No live contact is permitted during the mini-camp, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are allowed.

“Really an extension of OTAs for us,” said Head Coach Brian Daboll before practice. “We have an extra walk-through and some extra meetings after practice, but relative to our practice and how we’re doing things, it’ll be very similar as to what we’ve done the last couple weeks.

“We’re adding some more things. Today, we’ll do some more team periods but with their helmets off, we’ll do some short yardage, some goal line and introduce some more things. Keep increasing the installation, and then go out there and have some call-it periods, albeit 7-on-7 where the coordinators are just calling the plays, there’s no scripts. Try to build on our communication, our fundamentals and keep on stacking days together.”

ABSENTEES…
The only player not present was RB Saquon Barkley, who is currently not under contract as an unsigned Franchise player. “Everything that I have to say about Saquon will remain private,” said Head Coach Brian Daboll.

NEW YORK GIANTS LET MARK KONCZ GO…
The New York Giants have announced that Co-Director of Player Personnel Mark Koncz is not being retained. Koncz was brought in from the Carolina Panthers by then General Manager Dave Gettleman as a consultant prior to the 2018 NFL Draft. He was promoted to director of player personnel in June 2018. During the 2021 offseason, the Giants promoted Tim McDonnell from assistant director of player personnel to co-director of player personnel alongside Koncz. For now, McDonnell, who is team President/CEO John Mara’s nephew, is the sole director of player personnel.

Koncz was a member of the Panthers organization from 1994-2017 and was their director of pro scouting from 2000-2017. He worked under Gettleman when the latter was the Panthers’ general manager from 2013-2016.
