No Shoulder Surgery for Jason Pierre-Paul: Newsday is reporting that defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul will not need surgery on his injured shoulder. Pierre-Paul injured the shoulder in Week 10 against the Oakland Raiders. He played in two more games but was then shut down for the remaining five games of the season. How the shoulder responded to treatment was to determine whether offseason surgery was necessary or not. Newsday is reporting that Pierre-Paul’s shoulder rehab has been going well.

Neck Surgery for RB David Wilson: New York Giants Senior Vice President and General Manager Jerry Reese said on Thursday that RB David Wilson will have neck surgery. Wilson will have a procedure to fuse his vertebrae on January 16 to repair a herniated disc. The Giants were hoping to avoid surgery on the chance that rest and treatment would improve his condition. That obviously is not the case.

“You have to look at him differently, because he’s got the whole neck issue hovering over him right now,” said Reese. “So he’s got to come back and be healthy, number one. He’s planning to have surgery, and we’ll see how that comes out. Our medical staff feels like he’ll be ready to play this fall, but the neck and back – that’s pretty tricky. So you never know.”

“We’re hopeful that David will be able to play for us again next year,” said Giants President/CEO John Mara on Thursday on WFAN. “Time will tell on that one.”

Wilson injured his neck on October 6 in a Week 5 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He did not play again and was placed on Injured Reserve on November 7.

Giants Will Interview Karl Dorrell for Offensive Coordinator Position: According to press reports, the Giants will interview Karl Dorrell for the team’s vacant offensive coordinator position. The 50-year old Dorrell has spent the last two season as the Houston Texan’s quarterbacks coach. Before that he was the wide receivers (2008-10) and quarterbacks coach (2011) for the Miami Dolphins. He has collegiate experience as head coach (UCLA) and offensive coordinator (Washington and Colorado).

Dorrell is the fourth candidate the Giants have or will interview for their vacant offensive coordinator position, including Mike Sullivan (ex-Buccaneers offensive coordinator), Dowell Loggains (ex-Titans offensive coordinator), and Ben McAdoo (Packers quarterbacks coach). Giants President and CEO John Mara said on WFAN on Thursday that the Giants could also interview additional candidates.

With Redskins Hiring Jay Gruden, Perry Fewell Appears Safe: The Washington Redskins hired Cincinnati Bengals Offensive Coordinator Jay Gruden as their new head coach on Thursday. The Redskins had interviewed New York Giants Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell for the position on Monday.

Tom Quinn to Remain New York Giants Special Teams Coordinator: The Star-Ledger is reporting that multiple team sources have indicated that New York Giants Special Teams Coordinator Tom Quinn will not be fired. Quinn has been heavily criticized by fans and the media for the Giants’ poor special teams performance in 2013, including allowing four special teams touchdowns (three by punt return, one by a bad long snap). The Giants’ kickoff and punt return games also struggled last season. Quinn became the Giants’ special teams coordinator in 2007.

November 8, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Not practicing on Friday were RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring/knee) and CB Corey Webster (groin/ankle). Webster has officially been ruled “out” of the game against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday; Jacobs is “doubtful.”

The Star-Ledger is reporting that the issue keeping Jacobs from practicing and playing is a chronic knee condition that flared up this week.

CB Terrell Thomas (knee), CB Trumaine McBride (groin), and CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring) practiced on a limited basis. McBride and Hosley are “questionable” for the game; Thomas is “probable.”

“I feel good right now,” said McBride after practice. “I went out there today and I felt good running. I felt good turning. I felt good playing, so I’m ready to go for Sunday.”

WR Victor Cruz (neck) and TE Adrien Robinson (foot) fully practiced and are both “probable” for the game.

Giants Place David Wilson and Shaun Rogers on Injured Reserve; Activate Andre Brown and Markus Kuhn: The New York Giants placed RB David Wilson (neck) and DT Shaun Rogers (knee) on season-ending Injured Reserve on Thursday. To fill their roster spots, the Giants activated RB Andre Brown off of the short-term Injured Reserve list and DT Markus Kuhn off of the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) list.

November 7, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Aside from RB David Wilson and DT Shaun Rogers, not practicing on Thursday were CB Trumaine McBride (groin) and CB Corey Webster (groin).

RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring), WR Victor Cruz (neck), CB Terrell Thomas (knee), and CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring) practiced on a limited basis.

“(Jacobs) did some,” said Coughlin. “We’ll see what (his hamstring is) like (on Friday)…I don’t think you’d call it a setback. He just has some issues and you’re going to have to deal with them.”

TE Adrien Robinson (foot) fully practiced.

New York Giants Sign RB Peyton Hillis: The Giants signed RB/FB Peyton Hillis on Wednesday. Hillis has spent time with the Broncos, Browns, Chiefs, and Buccaneers since being drafted in 2008. The Buccaneers released him in September. As previously reported, the Giants waived/injured RB Da’Rel Scott on Tuesday.

Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator, Mike Sullivan, was with the Giants from 2004-2011.

“I’m coming in with an open heart and open mind,” Hillis said, “and I’m looking to do whatever the coaching staff needs me to do to help this team win…From what I understand, a lot of the terminology is the same as it was in Tampa, and so it may be a quick process. Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see. A lot of the plays are the same. It’s just different terminology. As long as you get the terminology down, you’ll be fine. Here though, it seems like it’s the same as Tampa’s, so it shouldn’t be that big of a (transition).”

Hillis had his best season in 2010 when he rushed for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 61 passes for 477 yards and two touchdowns for the Browns.

“I firmly believe I never had too much of an opportunity after I left Cleveland,” Hillis said. “I was behind Jamaal Charles at Kansas City. I didn’t get too much playing time. I felt when I got in I did well, and then I was in Tampa and never really got to touch the field because of Doug Martin. He’s pretty good. I’m just here to do whatever I can to help the team win. I think that this is a good team that can turn it around.”

“I came at peace with myself and my situation long ago,” Hillis said. “All I can do is what I can right now, so I can’t look in the past. I’ve got to keep on going.”

New York Giants Sign RB Jeremy Wright to the Practice Squad: The Giants signed RB Jeremy Wright to the Practice Squad on Wednesday. Wright is a rookie free agent who spent three weeks with the Giants in May 2013 before being waived. As previously reported, the Giants terminated the Practice Squad contract of LB LB Darin Drakeford on Tuesday.

RB David Wilson Injury Update: According to press reports, RB David Wilson visited with a neck specialist on Monday in Los Angeles to discuss his injured neck. The injury has supposedly been diagnosed as spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine) and a herniated disc. As of now, surgery is not recommended. It is believed that Wilson will have to sit out the next 3-4 weeks and see how the injury responds to treatment. If Wilson’s neck does not improve, the Giants could decided to shut Wilson down for the remainder of the season. In some cases, spinal stenosis can be career ending, but it is not believed that Wilson’s malady is that severe.

Hakeem Nicks Trade Rumors Persist: Reports and rumors that the Giants may be willing to listen to trade offers for WR Hakeem Nicks persist. Nicks will be an unrestricted free agent after the season and it is widely believed that he will be seeking a huge pay day on the open market. And Nicks has not gone out of his way to say he definitely wants to return. Unless the Giants decide to slap the Franchise Tag on him, they may risk losing him and only possibly receiving a compensatory draft pick in return.

The NFL’s trade deadline is October 29.

Newsday is reporting that “a source familiar with the team’s thinking said consideration is being given to moving the wide receiver” before the deadline. When the source was asked if such trade talk was “ludicrous” or “imminent,” the source responded, “Probably right in the middle.” However, the source also said he does not think Nicks will be traded.

The Daily News is reporting that a source indicated that the Giants do not expect to trade Nicks, but the source did tell the paper that the team will listen to offers for the receiver or any veteran player.

Kim Jones of The NFL Network tweeted on Monday, “There is no truth to rumors the Giants are shopping Hakeem Nicks or open to trading him.” Bob Papa of Giants and Sirius Radio, also says the Giants are not shopping Nicks.

Roster Moves – Da’Rel Scott Waived/Injured: The Giants waived/injured RB Da’Rel Scott on Tuesday. Scott injured his hamstring late in the game against the Chicago Bears last Thursday. The Giants did not immediately fill Scott’s roster spot.

The Giants also terminated the Practice Squad contract of LB Darin Drakeford, who was signed on October 8th.

New York Giants Work Out Running Backs: According to press reports, the Giants worked out running backs Ryan Torain (ex-Giants), Peyton Hillis (ex-Buccaneers), D.J. Ware (ex-Buccaneers), and Jeremy Wright (ex-Giants) on Tuesday. Ware also played for the Giants from 2007-2011; Wright is a rookie free agent who was with the Giants for a few weeks in May. All four backs reportedly will have team physicals on Wednesday.

RB David Wilson May Have Spinal Stenosis: RB David Wilson revealed on Friday that doctors fear he may be suffering from spinal stenosis, which is an abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal. The injury is affecting his neck and could potentially end his season. However, the New York Giants have not officially announced their medical diagnosis and Wilson will be seeking a second opinion on Monday.

Wilson was asked by a reporter if the injury was stenosis, and Wilson replied, “That’s what it is. That’s what they think it is.”

“They’re just telling me to sit out until further notice,” said Wilson. “I’m just as clueless as you all are…I feel perfectly fine but the x-rays, one vertebra is closer to my spinal chord…They said they want to be cautious and check it our further.”

Wilson was asked if season-ending surgery was a possibility. “I have to get a second opinion; we don’t know yet,” replied Wilson.

Head Coach Tom Coughlin was asked if Wilson’s injury was potentially season-ending. “That’s not the way that it was presented to me,” responded Coughlin. “He is going for a second opinion, as you know. The thing that gave me some confidence is, David had an occurrence of this in college. He talked to me exactly about how it came about. It wasn’t a top of the crown type thing, or anything of that nature  It wasn’t that type of an injury. It’s a disc issue and they will determine the severity of it and whether or not over the course of a couple weeks, three weeks, four weeks, if that can become a better circumstance, then he would have a chance to come back and play. If it’s determined that’s not the case, we’ll go from there.”

RB David Wilson’s Injury Potentially Season Ending? The New York Post is reporting that RB David Wilson’s neck injury may be season ending. The Post says Wilson has an issue with a disc in his neck and will see a neck specialist in Los Angeles on Monday. An unidentified NFL source told the paper that there is concern the injury may require season-ending surgery. However, two other unidentified sources told The Post that the injury may not be that serious.

October 9, 2013 New York Giants Injury Update – Six Out For Bears Game: The Giants held a walk-thru practice on Wednesday. Not practicing were RB David Wilson (neck), TE Adrien Robinson (foot), OC David Baas (neck), DE Damontre Moore (hamstring), CB Corey Webster (groin), CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring), and S Cooper Taylor (shoulder). Of these seven players, all have officially been ruled “out” of Thursday night’s game against the Chicago Bears except for Moore who is “doubtful.”

Practicing on a limited basis were WR Louis Murphy (ankle), TE Brandon Myers (ankle), DT Linval Joseph (ankle), and LS Zak DeOssie (back). Murphy, Myers, and Joseph are “questionable” for the game while DeOssie is “probable.”

LB Mark Herzlich (toe) and CB Terrell Thomas (knee) fully practiced. Both are “probable” for the game.
