JUNE 14, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS MINI-CAMP REPORT…
The first day of the New York Giants mandatory 3-day mini-camp was held on Tuesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The mini-camp will continue with practices on Wednesday and Thursday.

INJURY REPORT – VICTOR CRUZ PRACTICES…
Running back Orleans Darkwa (fractured leg), tight end Matt LaCosse (lower leg), offensive guard Ryan Seymour (torn ligament in hand), offensive tackle Byron Stingily (unknown), defensive tackle Montari Hughes (lower leg), linebacker J.T. Thomas (lower leg), safety Cooper Taylor (sports hernia), and safety Mykkele Thompson (lower leg) did not practice.

“J.T. has a lower leg injury,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “It is something that we feel he will be ready for camp.”

When McAdoo was asked about LaCosse, Hughes, and Thompson, he replied, “No, same thing, we are going to hold onto those guys until camp…We expect (Thompson) to be ready to go for training camp.”

Wide receiver Victor Cruz (calf) took part in individual drills and some walk-thru team drills. It was the first time he has practiced since August 2015 when he suffered a calf injury that later required surgery. “It was good to have Victor back in the fold,” said McAdoo. “(It was) another small step today. We felt it was time to take the next step…He ran a couple routes versus air, versus man to man, stuck his foot in the ground and looked like he could get some separation.”

PRACTICE NOTES…
Some snippets from various media sources:

  • The starting safeties were Landon Collins and Darian Thompson. The second-team safeties were Nat Berhe and Andrew Adams. The third team safeties were Bennett Jackson and Justin Currie.
  • Cornerback Trevin Wade lined up as the starting nickel cornerback.
  • Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie played the slot cornerback position some with Eli Apple and Janoris Jenkins outside.
  • Running back Shane Vereen beat safety Landon Collins for a big gain down the left sideline.

  • Tight end Ryan Malleck made a leaping grab against defensive end/linebacker Brad Bars. Malleck later ripped down a pass away from cornerback Matt Smalley.
  • Wide receiver Sterling Shepard made a nice sliding catch on a comeback route against cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Shepard also caught a touchdown pass from Manning in the red zone on a dig route.
  • Wide receiver Myles White beat cornerback Eli Apple on a slant in the endzone for a touchdown. Apple later broke up another pass intended for White.
  • Cornerback Trevin Wade ripped the ball away from wide receiver Sterling Shepard and returned it for a touchdown.
  • Wide receiver Tavarres King caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Nassib.

APRIL 26, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS MINI-CAMP REPORT…
The New York Giants opened a 3-day, voluntary mini-camp on Tuesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

On-field workouts allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted. Players will wear helmets, but no shoulder pads.

“It’s good to get back out here on the field,” said new Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “Third week of the offseason program, so we really just got out here and knocked the rust off a little bit, getting the guys orientated to the way we’re going to go about the business and we’ll build on it each day. We’ll do a little bit more tomorrow, a little bit more on Thursday and off we go.

“The building has been buzzing here for a few weeks, and the guys are excited to get back and get going. I think you felt that out here a little bit today. It was a good first day. We didn’t do much out here other than train the fundamentals. We didn’t do any offense or any defense, but the guys were into it.”

Video of practice highlights is available at Giants.com.

INJURY REPORT AND ABSENTEES…
Several players are still recovering from injuries suffered last year and are slowly being brought along. Wide receiver Victor Cruz (calf) was kept out of drills and spent time with the trainers.

“(Cruz) looks good,” said McAdoo. “He’s moving around. He’s doing a lot of things. He’s certainly ready to go if we needed him to go today, but he’s going to go when we deem him ready to go…Victor has come a long way and we’re going to take small steps with him. It’s the third week of the offseason program. We don’t want to rush into anything there. We want to take our time and when he’s ready to go, we’ll put him back out there when we deem him ready to go…He’s running routes. He’s working hard. He feels he’s 100 percent, but we’re going to take it slow and we’re going to take small steps with him. When we deem him ready, we’ll put him on the field.”

Linebacker Devon Kennard (foot) and safety Bennett Jackson (knee) were limited; they participated in some drills. Running back Orleans Darkwa (unknown) and place kicker Josh Brown (personal business) did not participate.

PRACTICE NOTES…
Some snippets from various media sources:

  • Newsday reports that defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa looked quick, wide receiver Geremy Davis looked bigger, and safety Mykkele Thompson looked agile.
  • NJ.com reports that Jason Pierre-Paul lined up with the first unit at left defensive end and Olivier Vernon at right defensive end.
  • John Jerry lined up with the first team at right guard and Marshall Newhouse at right tackle. Bobby Hart saw reps with the second-team unit at both right tackle and right guard.
  • Jasper Brinkley was with the first team at middle linebacker.
  • NJ.com reports that Landon Collins and Cooper Taylor started at safety with the first unit and that Nat Berhe and Bennett Jackson were with the second unit.

Larry Donnell, New York Giants (December 28, 2014)

LARRY DONNELL SIGNS HIS RESTRICTED FREE AGENT TENDER…
The New York Giants have officially announced that restricted free agent tight end Larry Donnell has signed his 1-year, $1.671 million free agent tender. Donnell also received medical clearance from team doctors on his neck, which he injured last season and caused him to be placed on Injured Reserve.

After a breakout season in 2014, Donnell had a disappointing 2015 campaign as his production dropped from 63 catches for 623 yards and six touchdowns to 29 catches for 223 yards and two touchdowns. He started all eight games in which he played in 2015.

Donnell originally went undrafted and unsigned in 2011. The Giants signed him as a street free agent in March 2012 and Donnell spent the 2012 season on the team’s Practice Squad. Donnell made the 53-man roster in 2013 and was active for all 16 games, starting one contest, but he only caught three passes for 31 yards.

Donnell is a big, athletic target. A former collegiate quarterback and a very raw player when he came to the Giants, Donnell is still a work in progress. As a receiver, Donnell has a good catch radius, adjusts well to the football, and is capable of making the circus catch. He needs to do a better job of holding onto the football (four fumbles in 2014) and gaining yards after the catch, where he often looks clumsy. While Donnell gives a good effort, he still has a lot of work to do to improve as a blocker.

GIANTS AGREE TO TERMS WITH DAMON HARRISON…
Multiple media sources are reporting that the New York Giants have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent defensive tackle Damon Harrison (New York Jets). The contract is reportedly 5-year, $46.25 million deal that  includes $24 million in guaranteed money and $30 million in the first three years of the contact.

The 27-year old Harrison was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Jets after the 2012 NFL Draft. In the last three years, Harrison has started every regular-season game for the Jets. In 2015, he accrued 72 tackles and 0.5 sacks. The 6’4”, 350-pound Harrison is one of the NFL’s best run-stuffing nose tackles. He does not get much heat on the passer.

MARCH 9, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS FREE AGENT NEWS AND RUMORS (PART II)…
March 9th marks the official beginning of free agency as teams can begin to sign free agents of other teams at 4:00 PM. Here is the latest:

  • The NFL Network is reporting that the New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars are the two most serious contenders for the services of unrestricted free agent defensive end Olivier Vernon (Miami Dolphins). The 25-year old Vernon was originally drafted in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Dolphins. In the last three seasons, he has played in every regular-season game with 46 starts, averaging 55 tackles and 8.5 sacks per year.
  • The New York Daily News and BleacherReport.com are reporting that the New York Giants have expressed interest in unrestricted free agent wide receiver Mohamed Sanu (Cincinnati Bengals). However, Sanu is first meeting with the Falcons on Wednesday night. The 26-year old Sanu was selected in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Bengals. In four seasons, Sanu has played in 57 regular-season games with 34 starts (27 of those coming in 2013-2014). Last season, he started four games and finished the year with 33 catches for 394 yards and no touchdowns.
  • ESPN is reporting that the New York Giants have expressed interest in unrestricted free agent right tackle Bobby Massie (Arizona Cardinals). The 26-year old Massie was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Cardinals. The athletic, 6’6”, 316-pound Massie started all 30 regular-season games he played in the last two years. Massie was suspended for the first two games of the 2015 season for violating the NFL’s Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse (alcohol – DUI).
  • The Giants had reportedly expressed interest in unrestricted free agents safety Rodney McCloud (Los Angeles Rams), safety George Iloka (Cincinnati Bengals), defensive end Williams Hayes (Los Angeles Rams), and offensive guard Mike Harris (Minnesota Vikings). But all either re-signed with their respective teams or another team.

JASON PIERRE-PAUL CONTRACT DETAILS…
USA Today is reporting that the 1-year, $10.5 million contract that defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul signed with the New York Giants includes:

  • Total possible value: $10.5 million
  • Guaranteed money: $8.5 million
  • Base salary: $4.25 million (fully guaranteed)
  • Signing bonus: $4.25 million (fully guaranteed)
  • Per-game roster bonuses: $1.2 million
  • Workout bonus: $300,000
  • Incentives: Up to $500,000 (based on sacks)

JANORIS JENKINS CONTRACT DETAILS…
National Football Post is reporting that the contract cornerback Janoris Jenkins signed with the New York Giants is a 5-year, $62.5 million deal that includes $28.8 million and a $10 million signing bonus.

LARRY DONNELL MEDICALLY CLEARED…
According to his agent, New York Giants tight end Larry Donnell has received full medical clearance to resume football activities. However, The New York Post reports that the Giants have not seen the results of those medical tests yet.

Donnell was placed on Injured Reserve in December 2015 with a neck injury. After a breakout season in 2014, Donnell had a disappointing 2015 campaign as his production dropped from 63 catches for 623 yards and six touchdowns to 29 catches for 223 yards and two touchdowns. He started all eight games in which he played in 2015.

LARRY DONNELL TENDERED…
NJ.com reports that the New York Giants have tendered restricted free agent tight end Larry Donnell at the $1.671 million level. This means the Giants have the right to match any contract offer by another team in order to retain his services. If they choose not to do so, because Donnell was not drafted or tendered at a high level, the Giants would receive no compensation in the form of a draft pick.

While General Manager Jerry Reese said recently that Donnell has not yet been cleared to resume football drills because of the neck injury, a source told The New York Daily News that Donnell is recovering well and expected to be cleared by the time of the team’s mini-camp in June.

GIANTS PLACE LARRY DONNELL AND ZAK DeOSSIE ON INJURED RESERVE…
The New York Giants have place tight end Larry Donnell (neck) and long snapper Zak DeOssie (wrist) on season-ending Injured Reserve. Donnell injured his neck on December 1st in a game against the New Orleans Saints and has missed the last four games. DeOssie had not missed a game in his 8-year career. He appeared on the team’s injury report on Saturday with the wrist injury but played in the game against the New York Jets. According to The New York Daily News, DeOssie has ligament damage in the wrist that will require surgery.

To fill the vacant roster spots, the Giants signed cornerback Tramain Jacobs and long snapper Danny Aiken to the 53-man roster.

The Giants signed Jacobs to the Practice Squad in September, promoted him to the 53-man roster in early November, and re-signed him to the Practice Squad nine days later after he had played in two regular-season games. Jacobs was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Baltimore Ravens after the 2014 NFL Draft. He played in three games as rookie after spending nine weeks on Baltimore’s Practice Squad. Jacobs finished the season on Injured Reserve with a thigh injury. The Ravens waived Jacobs in August 2015.

Aiken was originally signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2011 NFL Draft. Since then, he has spent time with Bills (2011), New England Patriots (2011-14), and Carolina Panthers (2015). He played in 63 regular-season games and 10 postseason games for the Patriots, including Super Bowl XLVI against the Giants.

PRACTICE SQUAD MOVES…
The New York Giants have signed offensive tackle Jake Rodgers and cornerback Leon McFadden to the Practice Squad. The vacancies were created when the Giants signed linebacker James Morris and cornerback Tramain Jacobs to the 53-man roster.

Rodgers was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons waived him in early September. Rodgers is a developmental prospect with a nice combination of size and athletic ability.

The Giants signed McFadden off of the Practice Squad of the Arizona Cardinals in October 2015, but waived him on December 5th after he had played in two games. McFadden was originally drafted in the 3rd round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He played in all 16 games as a rookie with two starts. The Browns waived him in August 2014. Since then, he has spent time with the Jets, 49ers, Cardinals, and Giants. McFadden played in seven games for the 49ers in 2014. The 49ers waived him in September 2015.

RUEBEN RANDLE ON WFAN
The audio of Tuesday’s WFAN Radio interview with wide receiver Rueben Randle is available on CBS New York’s website.

NOTES…
Wide receiver Odell Beckham’s 2,459 yards is the highest total ever for a player in his first 24 games.

Beckham is the first receiver in Giants history with five consecutive 100-yard games.

Wide receiver/returner Dwayne Harris became the first player in Giants history with touchdowns on a punt return, kickoff return, and a reception in the same season.

Quarterback Eli Manning’s 72-yard touchdown pass to Beckham was his 14th career completion of at least 70 yards. The Giants have scored on all of them.

The Giants have rushed for at least 100 yards just twice in their first 12 games for the first time in their history.

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
TE Larry Donnell (neck), LG Justin Pugh (concussion), and LB Mark Herzlich (quad) have officially been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins. OC Weston Richburg (ankle) is listed as “doubtful” for the game.

NJ.com is reporting that an MRI taken on Donnell’s neck on Wednesday did not reveal any serious long-term damage, but Donnell is still likely to miss at least four games and possibly the remainder of the regular-season.

“It’s in pretty rough shape,” Donnell said. “It’s going to be a while before I’m able to play again…There’s a chance I could play again this season, but this is not an arm, not a foot. This is my neck. I’ve broken arms, broken legs and I knew they were broken. This is a neck, so we just have to be really careful.”

“The fact is (Donnell is) not where they want him to be when they would give him the green light, so he’s not ready to go,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “(Putting him on season-ending Injured Reserve is) something that would be determined as we go along.”

Regarding Richburg, who practiced on Wednesday but not on Thursday, Coughlin said, “There was no re-injury, obviously he had a few snaps the day before and it didn’t work out.”

LB J.T. Thomas (ankle) is “questionable” for the game.

OG Geoff Schwartz (ankle), DE Damontre Moore (hamstring), LB Uani ‘Unga (neck),  CB Prince Amukamara (pectoral), and CB Leon McFadden (groin) are “probable” for the game.

QUINCY MONK PASSES AWAY…
Former New York Giants linebacker Quincy Monk (2002-03), who was drafted by the team in the 7th round of the 2002 NFL Draft, has passed away at the age of 36 due to cancer (adenocarcinoma). He leaves behind a wife and two children.

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
TE Larry Donnell (neck), LG Justin Pugh (concussion), and LB Mark Herzlich (quad) did not practice on Wednesday.

Pugh is still experiencing concussion-like symptoms 17 days after he was injured against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 8th. Head Coach Tom Coughlin said that Pugh has improved “very little.”

The situation with Donnell is also sounding more serious. Donnell said on Monday that he was cleared to return to practice. “(Donnell) continues to have the issues,” said Coughlin.

“It’s not looking good,” said Donnell. “Monday, I was fine. I was out there running, jumping around. I felt good, but I had more tests to get cleared yesterday and they found something else. So I’ve got to go talk to them about it and see what’s going on…I feel fine now, but I mean obviously something is wrong, so we’ve just got to figure it out and see what the process is…We’ve got to make sure everything’s OK in there. That’s more than football you’re talking about, when it’s your neck.”

OC Weston Richburg (ankle) and LB J.T. Thomas (ankle) practiced on a limited basis.

“(Richburg) going to be limited and we’ll see,” said Coughlin before practice. “We expect to hope to have him take a limited number of snaps but take some snaps, and we’ll see.”

OG Geoff Schwartz (ankle), DE Damontre Moore (hamstring), LB Uani ‘Unga (neck),  CB Prince Amukamara (pectoral), and CB Leon McFadden (groin) fully practiced.

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY UPDATE…
ESPN.com is reporting that Monday MRI results on cornerback Prince Amukamara’s pectoral muscle were encouraging. There is a possibility that he could play on Sunday depending on how well he practices this week. Amukamara has missed three games since suffering the injury against the San Francisco 49ers on October 11.

The New York Daily News is reporting that running back Orleans Darkwa suffered a badly bruised tailbone in Sunday’s loss against the New Orleans Saints. He may not be able to practice on Wednesday but he is hopeful that he can play on Sunday.

The Daily News is also reporting that the neck injury suffered by tight end Larry Donnell in the game against the New Orleans Saints is not considered serious. He also underwent an MRI on Monday. Donnell still has some soreness in the neck however.

GIANTS SIGN MATT LaCOSSE TO PRACTICE SQUAD…
The New York Giants have signed tight end Matt LaCosse to the Practice Squad. LaCosse was originally signed by the Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2015 NFL Draft. The Giants waived/injured him on August 1st with a hamstring injury. He then spent some time with the Jets before being waived before the season started. Because he was waived/injured, the Giants had to wait until after Week 8 to re-sign him.

LaCosse is a versatile player who has played tight end, H-Back, and fullback. LaCosse has a good frame, but needs to add bulk and get stronger. He does not get much movement as a blocker, but he works at it. LaCosse has good speed and catches the football well.

The Giants had a Practice Squad vacancy due to the promotion of linebacker James Morris to the 53-man roster from the Practice Squad late last week.

NFL TRADE DEADLINE PASSES…
The NFL trade deadline passed at 4:00PM EST with no moves being made by the New York Giants and most of the rest of the NFL.

A sights and sounds video from the Giants’ 52-49 loss to the New Orleans Saints is now available at Giants.com.

NOTES…
The Giants and Saints combined for 1,024 yards (608 by the Saints and 416 by Giants), the second-most ever in a Giants game. The record of 1,042 yards was set on November 28, 2011, in the previous game the Giants played in the Superdome. The 834 combined passing yards were the highest total ever in a Giants game.

The Giants and Saints combined for 63 first downs, which is the second-highest total in NFL history. Seattle and Kansas City set the mark with 64 first downs in 2002.

The winning team in the last four Giants-Saints games scored 48, 49, 52, and 52 points. It is the first time in NFL history two teams played four consecutive games in which the winner scored at least 48 points in each of them.

In the Giants last four visits to the Superdome, the Giants have allowed 45, 48, 49, and 52 points to become the first team ever to give up at least 45 points in the same stadium in four consecutive visits.

In Tom Coughlin’s 12 seasons and 195 games (including playoffs) as head coach, the Giants have allowed 48 or more points three times – each time in New Orleans.

The Saints scored 10 points in the game’s final 36 seconds. It is the first time since the 1970 merger the Giants allowed 10 points in the final 36 seconds of a game.

QB Drew Brees completed 18 consecutive passes on Sunday, which ties the longest single-game streak against the Giants. Jim Everett of the Los Angeles Rams had a streak of 18 in a row on November 12, 1989.

The Giants lead the NFL with a plus-11 turnover differential, their highest differential since they finished the 2012 season at plus-14.

The Giants have scored 215 points this season – 108 in the first half, and 107 in the second half.

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
WR Victor Cruz (calf), DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa (hamstring), LB Jon Beason (ankle/knee), LB J.T. Thomas (ankle), and CB Prince Amukamara (pectoral) did not practice on Thursday.

OT Will Beatty (pectoral – PUP) and DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand – roster exemption) continue to work on an undisclosed limited basis.

“(Pierre-Paul) moved around well,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin about Pierre-Paul’s practice on Wednesday. “He moved well and I think he proved to the medical people that he’s in good shape. That’s not to include all the back and forth, sideways stuff. He’s going to have to work his way through some of that, too. But he’s in excellent condition…He’s going to get a couple of reps in scout squad today.”

“Today was really the first day he kind of did anything,” said Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo after Thursday’s practice. “I know he ran around yesterday, so I haven’t really had a chance to watch the film. It’s going to take a little while, it’s really early now. We want to be optimistic, and I know he is, too, but I think we want to be smart about it. We’ll just see where it goes.”

“(Beatty has) been out here working the last couple days and doing a nice job and doing everything he can to put himself in position to come back as soon as he can,” said Offensive Coordinator Ben McAdoo. “We look forward to having him back when he’s ready…He’s doing a nice job out here. He’s working, getting his feet wet, getting his shoulders going. We’ll be ready for him when he’s ready to come back. Excited to get him back.”

RG Geoff Schwartz (ankle) practiced on a limited basis. WR Odell Beckham (hamstring) and LB Uani ‘Unga (neck) fully practiced.

“I’ll say this, today (Beckham) was sticking his foot in the ground, he was coming out of his breaks with some speed and energy and made some nice plays,” said McAdoo.

JASON PIERRE-PAUL CONTRACT DETAILS…
According to ESPN.com, the 1-year contract signed by defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has a maximum value of $8.71 million and includes:

  • $1.5 million guaranteed salary.
  • $1.5 million maximum in per game active roster bonuses (approximately $214,285 for each game he is on the 46-man roster on game day, up to seven games).
  • $3.85 million in playing-time incentives ($100,000 per week if he plays 45 percent of the snaps, $300,000 for 75 percent of the snaps, and $550,000 for 80 percent of the snaps – again up to seven games).
  • $1.864 million in sack-performance incentives (must accrue 7.5 sacks to receive full amount; if he records 10 sacks, he gets the full $3.85 million playing-time bonus regardless of playing time).

So all Pierre-Paul needs to do to receive $3 million is be active for seven games this season, regardless of how well or poorly he plays. ESPN.com reports that to get his full $8.71 million (basically the 9-game prorated amount of his original $14.813 million tender), Pierre Paul needs to be on the active roster for seven games AND either (a) play 80 percent of the defensive snaps while recording at least 7.5 sacks or (b) record 10 sacks.

As part of the deal, the Giants agreed not to put Pierre-Paul on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) List. Thus, Pierre-Paul is now eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in 2016 unless the Giants Franchise him again or sign him to another deal after the season and before free agency begins.

Their choices are massage, yoga, FMS (Functional Movement Screen) exercises designed for the individual, air compression boots, contrast bath (between a hot and cold tub), and self-massage with stick rollers and elastic bands.

The Giants will also have a 45-minute, up-tempo “walk-thru” practice on Saturday that is not open to the media. The Giants play the Saints in New Orleans on Sunday.
