Well, that was quick. In the final installment of the New York Giants mandatory, three-day mini-camp, practice was over essentially before it began. The Giants took the field, practiced kick return, stretched, huddled and broke. It also began to rain.

Off went Tom Coughlin, Eli Manning and others for a 32-day break before the team comes together again for training camp on July 21. Without further ado, here is your practice report:

SPECIAL TEAMS

  • The Giants practiced a full-team kickoff. The returners? David Wilson, Michael Cox, Odell Beckham Jr., Trindon Holliday and Quintin Demps. I guess, because this was the only portion of practice other than stretching, you could say Beckham and Wilson were full participants. So, there’s that.
  • Coughlin spoke to the media afterwards and said that the team did a walk-through before the media got out there.

THE INTERVIEWS While many players ran out with heel clicks knowing their summer vacation started a couple hours early, a few stuck around. As was the case this week, everyone headed on into the locker room to catch whomever was still around.

  • Coughlin talked at length and said he plans on taking a vacation with his family. He also made a really nice quote that stuck out: “The NY never comes off.” He said he told the players to make sure they didn’t get in trouble. Essentially, if Will Hill would do it, don’t you do it.
  • I had a great conversation with undrafted Notre Dame linebacker Dan Fox, who is loving every second of being a Giant. Fox said when the team called and he signed, he got a second call from Bennett Jackson, his teammate who the Giants drafted in the sixth round. Fox, who suffered a knee injury his senior year, said that playing hurt last year was one of the reasons he went undrafted. We’ll have much more on him later this evening.
  • Talked to Prince Amukamara as well for a few minutes who said he is enjoying the married life. As far as his proposal, see below, not many on the team got on him too much aside from Jason Pierre-Paul and Eli Manning. Amukamara also said the secondary is striving to be the best in the NFL.

  • Michael Cox said he was “hoping” to get a chance to play as a rookie last season, but didn’t really know. This year, Cox said the biggest difference is he understands the game and “knows everything a lot better.” He also is around the same weight as last season. Didn’t gain much more, or lose anything.

THE COACHES For the first time this offseason, the Giants made their assistant coaches available to the media. From new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, to linebacker’s coach Jim Herrmann, all spent time with reporters. Below you will find some interesting tidbits pulled from those interviews.

TOM QUINN (Special Teams Coordinator)

  • Quinn seemed extremely happy about not only his new returners, but gunners as well. The coach spent time praising free-agent acquisition Zack Bowman, along with Trindon Holliday and Quintin Demps.
  • Holliday, who has struggled holding onto the ball throughout his career, is being taught “high and tight” according to Quinn.
  • It seems as if all returners are going to be dual returners, working both on kicks and punts.
  • Personally, when I saw Temple rookie Brandon McManus’ name on the Giants’ roster, I assumed it was nothing more than a leg to give Josh Brown a break. According to Quinn, that isn’t really the case. It looks like McManus will be given every chance to win the kicking job. Quinn raved about the 22-year-old’s accuracy and ability to kick in cold weather.
Ben McAdoo, New York Giants (June 18, 2014)

Ben McAdoo – © USA TODAY Sports Images

BEN McADOO (Offensive Coordinator)

  • McAdoo seemed to echo what Tom Coughlin said a few weeks ago, the offense is a work in progress. Has there been progress? Yes. Is it “mastered?” No. It’s going to take time, but the first-year play caller seemed excited about where things are headed.
  • As of right now, McAdoo isn’t exactly sure where he will be calling plays, just that he will be. McAdoo said he expects to be on the field, but that’s not certain.
  • Trindon Holliday, who has impressed in camp, hasn’t just taken reporters by surprise, but the coaching staff, too. McAdoo said he’s making plays and looked good as a slot receiver. “He’s been a pleasant surprise.”
  • In offenses across the NFL, the fullback position has slowly but surely been disappearing. That apparently won’t be the case in New York. While the exact role is in the air, a fullback will be used: “The way I was raised, the full back was a big part of the things you do.”

KEVIN GILBRIDE JR. (Tight Ends Coach)

  • Gilbride, the son of former Giants’ offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride Sr., said his dad is doing well and enjoying life away from football. Jr. said his dad has been taking time to speak at football clinics and high schools, something he always wanted to do but wasn’t able to when coaching.
  • As far as Adrien Robinson, Gilbride said he’s been extremely active in the meeting rooms. The biggest issue with Robinson is that when the coaching staff tries to teach him too much, he forgets some of the basics.

DANNY LANGSDORF (Quarterbacks Coach)

  • Langsdorf said that he has been excited and pleased with Eli Manning. The coaching staff has worked with Manning on improving some of his footwork, accuracy, ball fakes and other mechanics.
  • Ryan Nassib has impressed Langsdorf with his intelligence and praised the quarterback for getting people lined up correctly. Another attribute that Langsdorf credited was Nassib’s mobility, saying he has the ability to extend plays and take off.

PAT FLAHERTY (Offensive Line Coach)

  • The Giants’ offensive line has been one of the more revamped positions in the offseason and Flaherty said it’s been a little different not seeing the same faces. As of today, the coach still doesn’t know who will start versus Detroit. It seems like an open competition.
  • John Jerry, who has been sidelined with an injury, was brought in with an opportunity to potentially start according to Flaherty. If Snee isn’t able to go, looks like position is his. Side note, Flaherty did say he doesn’t know what he has with the line simply because the team isn’t in pads. He doesn’t seem to like the “no contact” rules.
Perry Fewell, New York Giants (June 19, 2014)

Perry Fewell – Photo by Connor Hughes

PERRY FEWELL (Defensive Coordinator)

  • Perry Fewell seems very excited about the secondary and what he’ll be able to do with it. The coach mentioned multiple times about the potential the group has with all the new acquisitions.
  • Another area Fewell seems excited for is the linebacking unit, and in particular, the rookies. Fewell is very intrigued by rookies Devon Kennard and Dan Fox, saying both are extremely intelligent.
  • Two players that have stuck out to Fewell: Johnathan Hankins & Marcus Kuhn.

JIM HERRMANN (Linebackers Coach)

  • After three years, it looks like Jacquian Williams is finally starting to put everything together. Herrmann offered high praise to the linebacker saying he has taken the next step during the offseason. After playing strictly in the nickel package, Williams is now the starter in the base 4-3 as well. “He made a big jump this spring.”
  • Herrmann, similar to Fewell, credited Dan Fox’s intelligence as a strong part of his game.

DAVID MERRITT (Safeties Coach)

  • Merritt offered two big pieces of information: 1- Antrel Rolle has just begun to reach his true potential 2- Quintin Demps wants to play more in the box. Apparently when Demps signed, he went to Merritt with the goal and the coach told him he’d help him get there. After watching players like Eric Berry have success, Demps wants to try it out too.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED With practice essentially cancelled, questions regarding how certain players performed aren’t really able to be answered.

FROM MILTON – Which of the rookies have impressed them the most?

  • Not too many players were made available, but from a coaching stand point it looks like it’s Devon Kennard. The fifth-round pick is presently running with the 1’s and few offer anything other than praise.

FROM GEORGE FROM PA – What position in your opinion still needs to be improved?

  • It’s tough to say with these drills being zero contact. From a pure “paper” perspective, I still say offensive line. I like Geoff Schwartz and J.D. Walton a lot, but without Chris Snee or William Beatty… I still see a lot of holes.

FROM BOB IN TX – Does the staff see Ryan Nassib ready to be the No. 2 QB?

  • Right now, yes. Nassib is getting all of the No. 2 reps and it’s really not close. Curtis Painter, the only other QB on the roster, get’s anywhere from 3-4 per drill.

FROM BC4LIFE – Once healthy where does Pat Flaherty see John Jerry?

  • Asked him this question myself, his answer surprised me. Flaherty said that Jerry signed with the Giants because of his chance to start. From talking to him, looks like they view him as a starter. Where? That’s yet to be seen.

FROM AFNAVY – Will Ben McAdoo be calling plays from the field or from the booth?

  • That’s yet to be decided. McAdoo did said they’re leaning towards having him on the field.

https://twitter.com/lilylondon1013/status/479633616066973696

  • McAdoo avoided any real questions about anyone specific, instead saying he likes the player’s in the tight end room. Said they’re “Big bodies.”

  • From my understanding, he’s impressing everywhere. The kid is looking very much like a steal in the draft.

  • He’s moving all over the field. No one set position.

December 26, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Not practicing on Thursday were WR Rueben Randle (knee), WR Victor Cruz (knee/concussion), TE Adrien Robinson (knee), OG Brandon Mosley (hand), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder), CB Trumaine McBride (groin), and CB Jayron Hosley (illness).

Cruz and Mosley have already been ruled out of the game against the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Mosley will have surgery on his broken hand on Friday.

“Rueben has a little bit of swelling in his knee, so they want to take a look at it,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “Hopefully it’s not going to be much. Time to time he has some issues…In our work yesterday he kind of limped around a little bit, so they took him in and looked at it and it was a little bit swollen this morning.”

OG David Diehl (knee), DT Cullen Jenkins (shin/quad), and CB Terrell Thomas (knee) were limited in practice.

RB Andre Brown (concussion) and RB Peyton Hillis (concussion) fully practiced. “(Brown and Hillis) did well, both of them,” said Coughlin. “There didn’t seem to be any issues.”

RB David Wilson Injury Update: According to press reports, RB David Wilson visited with a neck specialist on Monday in Los Angeles to discuss his injured neck. The injury has supposedly been diagnosed as spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine) and a herniated disc. As of now, surgery is not recommended. It is believed that Wilson will have to sit out the next 3-4 weeks and see how the injury responds to treatment. If Wilson’s neck does not improve, the Giants could decided to shut Wilson down for the remainder of the season. In some cases, spinal stenosis can be career ending, but it is not believed that Wilson’s malady is that severe.

Hakeem Nicks Trade Rumors Persist: Reports and rumors that the Giants may be willing to listen to trade offers for WR Hakeem Nicks persist. Nicks will be an unrestricted free agent after the season and it is widely believed that he will be seeking a huge pay day on the open market. And Nicks has not gone out of his way to say he definitely wants to return. Unless the Giants decide to slap the Franchise Tag on him, they may risk losing him and only possibly receiving a compensatory draft pick in return.

The NFL’s trade deadline is October 29.

Newsday is reporting that “a source familiar with the team’s thinking said consideration is being given to moving the wide receiver” before the deadline. When the source was asked if such trade talk was “ludicrous” or “imminent,” the source responded, “Probably right in the middle.” However, the source also said he does not think Nicks will be traded.

The Daily News is reporting that a source indicated that the Giants do not expect to trade Nicks, but the source did tell the paper that the team will listen to offers for the receiver or any veteran player.

Kim Jones of The NFL Network tweeted on Monday, “There is no truth to rumors the Giants are shopping Hakeem Nicks or open to trading him.” Bob Papa of Giants and Sirius Radio, also says the Giants are not shopping Nicks.

Roster Moves – Da’Rel Scott Waived/Injured: The Giants waived/injured RB Da’Rel Scott on Tuesday. Scott injured his hamstring late in the game against the Chicago Bears last Thursday. The Giants did not immediately fill Scott’s roster spot.

The Giants also terminated the Practice Squad contract of LB Darin Drakeford, who was signed on October 8th.

New York Giants Work Out Running Backs: According to press reports, the Giants worked out running backs Ryan Torain (ex-Giants), Peyton Hillis (ex-Buccaneers), D.J. Ware (ex-Buccaneers), and Jeremy Wright (ex-Giants) on Tuesday. Ware also played for the Giants from 2007-2011; Wright is a rookie free agent who was with the Giants for a few weeks in May. All four backs reportedly will have team physicals on Wednesday.

October 14, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Not practicing on Monday were RB David Wilson (neck), RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring), RB Da’Rel Scott (hamstring), CB Corey Webster (groin), CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring), and S Cooper Taylor (shoulder).

“Brandon, I think, will make it for (Thursday’s practice),” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “Today was precautionary just to keep track of him and not do something that was unnecessary.”

“It’s fine,” said Jacobs. “Day-to-day. Just go in and get treatment and do what I gotta do. But I’m not counting on being down. Hamstrings can be tricky. Just when you feel like they’re all healed and ready to go you go out and over-extend and hurt it again. So I’m just taking it precautionary. I don’t think it’s going to be an issue, though.”

OC David Baas (neck) participated in individual drills.

“It was good to get back out there,” Baas said. “I just did some limited stuff today, just did some individual. I’ll be ready to go on Thursday. I’ll talk to the doctors and the coaches and see how much I’m doing but I’ll be ready to go Thursday. I just want to help my team win, so I can’t wait to get back out there.”

TE Adrien Robinson (foot) returned to practice.

September 2, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report – Cruz and Hosley Return to Practice: Not practicing on Monday were RB Andre Brown (leg), OC David Baas (knee), OT David Diehl (thumb), TE Adrien Robinson (foot), and DT Markus Kuhn (PUP – knee).

Head Coach Tom Coughlin was asked about Brown. “I don’t know,” said Coughlin. “We’ll see. I don’t know what I can tell you. The guy is hurt. He’s got a serious injury. What’s his status going to be? I can’t tell you that. How long? I don’t know. I really don’t. I can repeat what you hear out there, but I don’t know that’s the way it’s going to be. I know this: he has a great attitude about it and he really believes that he’ll come back faster than whatever number anybody puts on it. I’m rooting for him.”

“(Robinson’s) going to be a while,” said Coughlin. “I’m not giving you (a time table). He’s got a sore foot, so we’ll see. Those things usually are very unpredictable anyways. Hopefully he’ll get back as fast as he can because he needs to.”

WR Victor Cruz (heel) and CB Jayron Hosley (ankle) returned to practice.

“(Cruz) felt good,” said Coughlin. “He took as many reps as was planned for him to take…Limited, but it looked to me like he took probably half, maybe more.”

“Yeah, as of right now (I will play on Sunday), if everything continues to feel good in the morning and doesn’t swell up on me or anything crazy, I’ll be good to go,” said Cruz. “I’m a little ahead (of schedule). They were predicting a couple more weeks, but I was diligent in the treatment room and at home, doing the things I needed to do. Icing it and getting ready and things like that. I’m pretty much ahead of schedule and I’m happy about that.”

DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back), DE Damontre Moore (shoulder), S Antrel Rolle (ankle), and FB Henry Hynoski (knee) all practiced.

“(Pierre-Paul) practiced pretty well,” said Coughlin. “We’ll see. They obviously have a ways to go there…He’s got to practice…Practice every day. Put the uniform on. Play in the pads. See how he feels the next morning. Those are the things that he has to go through…There’s no pads on (today) and he’s coming like he’s got them on. So that’s a good sign.”

“I feel great,” said Pierre-Paul. “I feel good, (but) we’re not there. Ran off tired. I was completely tired.”

“I don’t know (if I will play Sunday),” said Pierre-Paul. “It all depends if I can take on a double team, if I’m ready for that. It’s only been the first day so we’ll see how it goes. We have a whole week ahead of us…Right now I’m doing the smart thing and just taking it day-by-day. So when I come back, I’ll be fully ready to play.”

Coughlin was asked about Hynoski. “If there’s a will, there’s a way,” said Coughlin. “I mean, this guy is all heart and he won’t miss a beat. As soon as they gave him the opportunity to get back out there, he was trying to jump in on every snap. He can come back from these things. It takes a while.”

“I’m doing good,” said Hynoski. “I practiced full today, I’m feeling good. If you want to know about Sunday, I can’t give you an answer now. That’s going to be decided later in the week, I’m assuming, by the doctors. I practiced full, no issues…I feel good out there, haven’t had any issues or setbacks. It’s just a matter of getting the go-ahead or not and we’ll see what happens at the end of this week. Every day I progress, but I think I have to progress just a little bit more to give them that go-ahead.”

August 8, 2013 New York Giants Training Camp Reports: The Giants held their eleventh training camp practice on Thursday afternoon at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. The next practice is on Monday from 1:30-3:45PM. For a complete training camp schedule and Giants.com Q&A guide, see the Training Camp section of the website.

Injury Update – Many to Miss Steelers Game: Not practicing on Thursday were DE Justin Tuck (back), OL Justin Pugh (concussion), OL James Brewer (concussion), RB Ryan Torain (concussion), S Cooper Taylor (hamstring), FB Henry Hynoski (PUP – knee), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (PUP – back), and DT Markus Kuhn (PUP – knee). Tuck might play against the Steelers on Saturday night, but the others will not.

When asked about Tuck, Head Coach Tom Coughlin responded, “I don’t know. Today was not what we wanted. He’s not quite as nifty and nimble as we had hoped. We’ll have to see. I actually thought he would work today.”

“It’s just a little tightness,” said Tuck. “I don’t think this is something that’s gonna be much more of an issue after this week…I’ve played in worse pain, I can tell you that. (We) just want to be smart and make sure it is nothing that will linger, that’s all.”

OG Chris Snee (hip) and CB Terrell Thomas (knee/hamstring) practiced on a limited basis. Coughlin said they will not play against the Steelers.
