The Giant were still in shorts and shells, but they at least got onto the less cramped practice fields.
P Jeff Feagles finally got to use his foot this afternoon and he boomed some beauties. Even his poor efforts were okay. LB Zak DeOssie had been doing the punt snaps and they looked okay. DT Jay Alford, who usually snaps for field goals, gave the longer punt snaps a try and sent several scooting along the ground. At least the center snaps were better this afternoon. I did not notice any more Center-QB mess-ups.
You may have seen football players high stepping through lines of tires. That might be great for running backs, but it is probably not necessary for linemen. OT Kareem McKenzie who is a pretty fair tackle did that exercise this afternoon with almost comical care and slowness.
CB Kevin Dockery had a nice pass defense in the 7 on 7s. Later on, WR Sinorice Moss juggled an Eli Manning pass and Kevin grabbed it. I don’t believe it hit the ground. CB Corey Webster almost had an interception on a deep ball.
In the 11 on 11s QB Eli Manning had and easy throw and catch to TE Kevin Boss who was at the sidelines. TEs Darcy Johnson and Michael Matthews also made some catches as did TE Lee Vickers, who made a nifty catch this morning, which I did not report. Anyway, these TEs are all big – 270ish – and when they catch the ball they generally plow straight ahead with it into the nearest obstructing defender.
TE Travis Beckum is different. I didn’t actually see him catch the ball, I just saw him run 10 yards with it, dodging and twisting his body during the entire run. It was impressive to watch.
After his pass to Boss (above), Eli rolled out to his right and found WR Domenik Hixon who made a leaping catch running down the sideline. After that, QB David Carr came in and handed off to HB Danny Ware who showed good balance making a spinning run. Carr gave the ball to Ware again and this time Danny showed excellent speed running around left end.
Carr’s next pass was a 17 yard laser beam, perfectly thrown to TE Darcy Johnson. Another handoff; this time to HB Andre Brown who made a nice run around end.
Back in the 7 on 7s, where this kind of thing really should not happen, Carr took the snap and held onto it too long. He then threw it directly to a wide open LB Bryan Kehl for an interception.
Carr connected with HB Danny Ware and HB Allen Patrick. Both Domenik Hixon and Ramses Barden made fine diving catches of balls thrown by Carr.
QB Andre’ Woodson had a few plays in the 11 on 11s. WR Ramses Barden made a nice catch of a hard-thrown wobbler by Andre. When nobody was open on the next snap, Woodson had to run with the ball. One of the two best passes of the day was a deep pass from Woodson to WR Sinorice Moss who was covered by Safety C.C. Brown.
The other pass was in the 11 on 11s. I was a beautiful deep spiral from Eli to WR Steve Smith, who had badly beaten CB Aaron Ross and S Kenny Phillips, for what would have been a TD. Eli then found HB Danny Ware over the middle and Danny made a nice catch. HB Ahmad Bradshaw showed that he can catch out of the backfield as well as Brown and Ware, when he grabbed a nice pass from QB Andre’ Woodson.
Things got a little ragged on offense towards the end of the practice. LB Danny Clark knocked away an Eli pass and it was almost intercepted by S Michael Johnson.
My overall impression of the practice is that there were some excellent plays made both on offense and defense. While there have been some passes that were off target, by and large, if the ball was catchable, be it WR, TE, or RB, that ball was caught. There were very few drops.Print This Page
