October 19, 2006 New York Giants Injury Report: SS Gibril Wilson (toe) did not practice yesterday and officially remains “questionable” for the game against the Cowboys on Monday night.

“Gibril is not going to work,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. ” He’s going to run on the side. We’ll see how far he goes, how far we get with that. He’s feeling better, and hopefully we’ll get the green light for him to go tomorrow, but we’ll see.”

WR Amani Toomer (sore calf) did not practice, but is “probable” for the game.

Carlos Emmons (pectoral muscle) is “questionable” and WR Sinorice Moss (quad) and HB Derrick Ward are “doubtful.” All three were limited in practice yesterday.

“(Emmons is) going to work,” said Coughlin. “He’ll start to pick up the workload, as will Ward, as will Moss…They’re all limited. Those three are limited, but they’ll begin to practice more and take more snaps.”

Article on the Reaction of HB Tiki Barber’s Teammates Regarding His Likely Retirement: Surprise and Support as Barber Weighs Retirement by John Eligon of The New York Times

Notes and Quotes: The Star-Ledger is reporting that the 3-year contract PK Jay Feely signed with the Giants in 2005 was a 2-year deal with a third-year option based on playing incentives. Feely apparently has reached those incentives, thereby voiding the third year of the contract and making him an unrestricted free agent after this current season. Feely said he would like to re-sign with the Giants.

HB Brandon Jacobs on HB Tiki Barber’s likely retirement after the 2006 season: “I’m in a position that I’m in if Tiki does decide to call it quits. But I’m not ready for him to get out of here just yet. I’m trying to get him back for one more. I’m trying to do the same thing that they’re trying to do upstairs, basically, trying to get him back for one more…He’s taught me a lot about what it’s like to play in this league. Not just football. I look at what he does off the field and how he speaks to (the media). He’s an ace at that stuff. I’m still trying to learn from him. It’s why I don’t want him to go…But if he does decide to walk away from the game, I know what I’ve got to do. The job is mine to lose. I know I’ve got to step up and be an every-down guy. I know I can do that. I’ve been learning for the last two years from him to get ready for this moment. This single moment right here when he’s talking about leaving…It’s big shoes, real big shoes. Giant fans, they shouldn’t worry ’cause a lot of these fans know what I can do. When it’s time for him to walk away from the game – which I don’t think it is time for him to walk away from the game – I got it. I got it all under control…I feel like I’m ready to take over…I’m so comfortable in this offense where it’s not even funny.”

Barber on Jacobs’ biggest improvement since his rookie season last year: “Learning how to play without the ball in his hands. He was always good with the ball in his hands. He’s tough and he’s aggressive. But understanding that you have to be as accountable as a quarterback on every play is tough to do. Brandon’s starting to understand that. It’s a long process. It took me five years to do it. But I think he’s getting there…I think he’s ready. He’s come leaps and bounds since last season. He’s going to need some help, so hopefully Derrick Ward will get healthy. But I think Brandon is ready.”

WR Plaxico Burress on Barber retiring: “He’s been one of the most prolific backs in NFL history, if that’s something he chooses to do, hey, let’s all rally around each other and let that be a motivation for us, not a distraction. It doesn’t distract me at all. We’re all professionals, we all know the job at hand. It doesn’t worry me that he’s not committed to us as a player on a Super Bowl team, because you can see the way he approaches the game, the way he practices, the way he is around the locker room, he wants to win football games. When he’s talking about not being here next year he’s talking about after the season. He’s going to be ready to play.”

CB Sam Madison on Barber retiring: “I need to get me a (Tiki) jersey so he can sign it.”
