Giants’ Beat Writer Practice Reports: The following are brief practice reports provided by the NY/NJ beat writers who cover the Giants:

Injury Update – Injuries Mounting: Not practicing yesterday in either practice were WR Hakeem Nicks (hamstring), WR David Tyree (hip flexor), OC Shaun O’Hara (triceps), OG Rich Seubert (shoulder), DE Osi Umenyiora (knee), DT Chris Canty (hamstring), DT Rocky Bernard (hamstring/shoulder), DT Fred Robbins (knee), and LB Michael Boley (hip).

Speaking of Canty, Head Coach Tom Coughlin said, “I’m disappointed that he has had to miss this time. He’s fought his way through this a couple of times. All spring he fought this and was able to keep going, so hopefully it isn’t going to take long to get him back.”

“Nothing too serious,” said Nicks. “Just precautions for my hamstring…I’m going to take it day by day depending on what the trainers tell me to do.”

“My groin needed some rest,” said Tyree. “I don’t want it to get bad. I’ll rest it this afternoon and should be back out there (on Sunday).”

Not practicing in the morning were DE/DT Justin Tuck (foot) and DT Barry Cofield (knee), but both returned in the evening.

Offensive linemen Kevin Boothe (pectoral) and Cliff Louis (ankle) left the evening practice with injuries. The injury to Louis appeared serious.

Notes and Quotes: The training camp practice schedule is available in the Training Camp section of the website.

Head Coach Tom Coughlin on WR Derek Hagan: “He hasn’t dropped any passes. He’s been a ‘Johnny-on-the-spot’ kind of guy. Everybody knows about his abilities on special teams. He’s made a lot of real good plays for us. He’s had a good camp at this point.”

Coughlin on H-Back Travis Beckum: “Beckum has gotten a little bit better each day. The thing I think he’s started to do a little better is the physical aspect as a blocker.”

Defensive Line Coach Mike Waufle on who has looked good: “Jeremy Clark has had a really good camp. He’s about ten-fold better than where he was a year ago. Jay Alford has been very productive in this camp, I’ve noticed a difference in his strength and in his quickness. Maurice Evans, his teammate from Penn State, is a rookie, is really shy, but is showing explosiveness.”

Waufle on DT Chris Canty: “Well, you’ve got to remember when he was in college at Virginia they played the same defensive scheme as the Dallas Cowboys. So, coming here, some of things we do are very new to him. It’s got to be frustrating for him as a veteran, coming into a totally new defense. At the same time, I’ve been telling him don’t get discouraged, because all of a sudden you’re going to wake up one day in a couple of weeks and it’s all going to have come together. Just imagine trying to learn a new language, like Spanish…that’s kind of what’s happening with him.”
