March 3, 2014 New York Giants Free Agency News and Rumors: According to NJ.com, the New York Giants are concentrating their efforts to re-sign linebacker Jon Beason before free agency begins on March 11. NJ.com says efforts to re-sign the Giants other unrestricted free agents “have been put on the back burner.”

NJ.com reports the Giants have not yet made an official offer to soon-to-be unrestricted free agent defensive end Justin Tuck. The website also says the Giants believe soon-to-be unrestricted free agent defensive tackle Linval Joseph “will be too costly to keep” and the chances that soon-to-be unrestricted free agent wide receiver Hakeem Nicks re-signing with the team are “close to zero.”

Reports – New York Giants Will Not Tender Henry Hynoski and Jim Cordle: According to ProFootballTalk, the New York Giants will not tender fullback Henry Hynoski, who is eligible to be tendered as a restricted free agent. The website says the Giants would still like to re-sign Hynoski, but at a lower rate than then restricted free agent tender. If Hynoski is not tendered, he will become an unrestricted free agent on March 11 when free agency begins.

The Star-Ledger is reporting that center Jim Cordle will also not be tendered as a restricted free agent.

Tom Coughlin Wants to Coach Past 2014: In a taped ESPN Radio interview that is set to air on Sunday, Head Coach Tom Coughlin was asked if he still felt he could coach “well beyond” the 2014 NFL season.

“I certainly do, and I’m blessed with good health and good energy and a routine that I think puts me in the maximum opportunity to stay healthy,” responded Coughlin. “The other issue, of course, is (my wife) Judy. If Judy’s healthy, and so on and so forth, and we both feel good about continuing…then no doubt will we feel that way.”

The 67-year old Coughlin has one year remaining on his current contract. Giants President/CEO John Mara said recently, “(Coughlin is) going to be our coach here next year and hopefully for longer than that, but we haven’t sat down to even talk about that yet.”

“I haven’t sat down with John,” said Coughin, “and I do know by virtue of a couple of things that he’s said that he’s trying to pick the best time. And he knows full well that we’re in a full-court press in terms of making sure that our staff is ready to go.”

David Diehl Retires: Offensive lineman David Diehl, who has been with the team since he was drafted in the 5th round of the 2003 NFL Draft, officially announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday. Diehl played in 11 seasons with the Giants. Diehl’s daughter Addison was on hand when Diehl informed the team.

“She wants me to play forever,” said Diehl. “It’s not very easy for my daughter to talk about me retiring and not playing football. The Giants are just as much family to her as they are to me. She’s been going to the games and at seven years old, she understands everything. She understands the game and the players and how important it is to play in the NFL. For her, my stepping away from something she loves as much as I do is not an easy thing.”

“I love football,” Diehl said. “I love being in the game, I love watching film, I love doing all of that and I’m going to miss that aspect of it. But I know I’m ready to start the new and next chapter of my life. I’m ready to not only be a bigger part of my daughter’s life, but I’m ready to spread my knowledge and help other people with the game and continue to do stuff throughout our community and charity work and be involved with the New York Giants in any way possible. I’ve accomplished everything I could possibly dream of as a football player. If in 2003, anyone would have said that Dave Diehl, a fifth-round draft pick out of Illinois, would win two Super Bowls, play in the Pro Bowl and win every single Giant award possible, people would have said you’re crazy. I have a lot to be proud of.”

During his career with the Giants, Diehl started at every offensive line position except center. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2009. Most importantly, he was the starting left tackle on two Super Bowl teams.

Diehl only missed 12 games in 11 seasons. He played in 164 regular-season games, tying Phil Simms for 12th on the franchise’s all-time list. “To be able to sit here and say I tied Phil Simms for 12th all-time on the list, I mean that’s crazy,” Diehl said. He started 160 of those 164 games, plus all 11 postseason games in which he played. In the regular season, Diehl started 65 games at left tackle, 42 at left guard, 26 at right tackle, and 27 at right guard. In the postseason, Diehl has 10 starts at left tackle, and one at left guard.

“When I think of David Diehl what comes to mind is his indomitable spirit,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “He got the most out of his God-given ability and that’s the best way that you can judge any individual. He took the talent that he had and he used it to the extreme, to the utmost of his ability. What more can you ask of the guy? And he gave great effort. He always gave great effort, there was no doubt about that. You knew exactly what you were getting.”

“He played so many different positions along the offensive line and never complained and never made an excuse,” QB Eli Manning said. “He was a guy who practiced in training camp and was prepared to play right tackle and then all of a sudden in the middle of the season, it’s, ‘Hey, now you have to go play left tackle.’ He just went over there and did it. He never made an excuse and he’s never looked for a reason not to. He just did his job and did it well for a long time. He protected me for a long time. He’s one of my great buddies and just a true warrior. A guy you wanted out there. He would play injured and he wanted to be out there for every practice, for every play in every game. Just a great teammate, a guy with that type of attitude is the kind of attitude you want all your teammates to have. He was just a true professional.”

Diehl was the only Giants player whose arrival predated that of Coughlin and Manning. With his retirement, the longest-tenured Giants are guard Chris Snee and Manning.

“You play for 10 years, you’re going to have some great relationships and make some great friends,” Manning said. “Unfortunately, you’re going to see some great friends retire. Obviously, you’re happy for them that they have had a great career and they can end it on their own terms, like David’s doing. It’s sad to have a friend that you’re used to seeing every day, to no longer have that presence in the locker room. He will be missed. But I think for the other linemen and other teammates who have been fortunate to be around him, he’s set a great example of how to be a professional, how to go about your business and be a true competitor. I think his presence will be felt. He’s made an impact on a lot of the players on the Giants.”

“I’m just very, very blessed and happy to have had the teammates and the guys around here and the coaches and the organization and to be able to do it for 11 years in one place – that’s unheard of,” Diehl said. “You never hear that any more. I’m a New York Giant through and through.”

“Whatever you wanted him to do, he did,” Coughlin said. “The weight room, practice, meetings, jibber and jab at guys that weren’t doing what they should be doing. He was the huddle guy, he helped get things going. You always knew where he was coming from. He was a tremendous competitor and a guy you always wanted on your team, because he was so positive and so up front and he agreed with everything you did as a coach.”

“At one point, it’s going to be bittersweet,” Diehl said. “At one point, I’m going to miss the camaraderie, being around the guys, being in the locker room, sharing stories of the summer. Most importantly, grinding and working for the season. That’s where you start setting the groundwork after OTAs and mini-camp. Training camp is when you’re getting ready for the season, for what we’re here for and that’s to win championships. So I’m going to miss being around the guys. It’s tough, physically, as an offensive lineman to play as long as I have. I’m not going to miss the cold tubs and the physical part and all of that stuff, but I’m definitely going to miss being around here and being part of it. I’ve been here for so long, it’s been such a routine and such a part of my life, so it’s going to be an adjustment not being a part of it, sweating in 100 degree weather and doing all of that stuff with these guys.

“Guys like Kareem (McKenzie) and Shaun (O’Hara) and Rich (Seubert) would laugh and say once they were done, ‘I’m going to come with a lawn chair’ and watch practice. They never come back and watch mini-camp and sit out there in the heat. They don’t want to watch training camp, they don’t want to see that stuff. It’s definitely going to be interesting and going to be different for me. But I’m going to be here, I’m still going to be involved with the team in any way possible with different things in the charity work that I’m always involved in. I’m never not going to be a Giant, I’m never not going to be in this area. It’s just for the first time in my career it’s not going to be as a player.”

Quotes: Former Green Bay Packers QB Graham Harrell on how new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo can help QB Eli Manning: “I think Ben’s going to be tough on him. He’s going to coach him hard. That’s one thing I really respected about him while he was there. He tried to coach everyone tough. That can be tough, especially with Aaron who’s had so much success, who is such a good player. Well, now (McAdoo) s walking into a place with another quarterback who’s obviously a proven great player, a guy that’s won a lot of games, won Super Bowls. But Ben’s the kind of guy that’s going to come in and demand a lot out of him, expect a lot out of him, expect a lot of preparation…I definitely think that’s going to help with turnovers and stuff like that, just the preparation side, the demand that Ben’s going to put on him. And the Green Bay offense, or the offense that Ben’s going to bring to New York is going to be an offense that sets the quarterback up for success…I think he’s going to be good for Eli. I think Eli is a really good quarterback and can play in any offense, but I think Eli will be a great fit for Ben’s offense. I think it’s going to be a good match for each other. I think it can be set up for a fun year for the Giants.”

New York Giants Place FB Henry Hynoski on Injured Reserve; Sign FB John Conner: The Giants placed FB Henry Hynoski (fractured shoulder) on season-ending Injured Reserve on Wednesday.

To fill Hynoski’s vacant roster spot, the Giants signed FB John Connor, who has played with the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals, to reportedly a 2-year deal.

“We need a fullback, we need a lead blocker,” Head Coach Tom Coughlin said. “He is a physical guy. We think he’ll go up in the hole and clear the hole for the running back and we hope he’ll be a good pass protector and contribute on special teams as well.”

New York Giants Injury Report: Not practicing on Wednesday were OC David Baas (neck), OG Chris Snee (hip), TE Adrien Robinson (foot), LB Jacquian Williams (knee), and CB Corey Webster (hip).

OT David Diehl (thumb), LB Spencer Paysinger (hip), CB Terrell Thomas (knee), and S Cooper Taylor (shoulder) practiced on a limited basis.

“David Baas will not work today,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “Diehl is going to work. We’re going to have him in a limited capacity. We’ll see what he can do. Hynoski…You know about that. He’s going to go on IR. Spencer Paysinger is going to work. He’ll probably take three quarters of the work. Adrien Robinson is not going to work. Chris Snee is not going to work. It’s his hip. It’s not the operated or surgically-repaired hip. Cooper Taylor has a shoulder, but he’s doing better today. He’s a little bit stronger and he will work although he is to stay out of contact. We’re going to put Terrell on the list because he needs to be managed and probably one day a week or at some point in time we’ll have to cut the reps back for him so he has decent recovery time. Corey Webster feels better, but he’s not going to get clearance to go today. We expect Jacquian (Williams) to go tomorrow.”

September 24, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: According to Newsday, the MRI taken on OG Chris Snee’s hip showed no new damage, but if the pain does not subside, other options would have to be considered, including season-ending Injured Reserve.

“The hope is that it calms down and lets him get back to playing to his standard,” an unidentified source told Newsday. “If it doesn’t calm down, we are going to have to do something.”

Snee had offseason surgery on his hip. He decided to delay the surgery until after the Pro Bowl so he could participate in that game and was on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List until August 6.

Meanwhile, The Star-Ledger is reporting that FB Henry Hynoski’s shoulder fracture is serious and may be season-ending.

RB Andre Brown (fractured leg), who is on short-term Injured Reserve, says he’s ahead of schedule on his rehab. Under the short-term IR rules, however, Brown cannot be added to the 53-man roster until after Week 8.

New York Giants Practice Squad Moves: The New York Giants have re-signed OT Steven “Sam” Baker and signed LB Ty Powell to the Practice Squad.

To make room for Baker and Powell, the Giants have terminated the Practice Squad contracts of  DE Matt Broha and WR Marcus Harris.

Notes: The 2013 New York Giants have allowed an NFL-high 115 points and are the third team in the last 50 years to allow at least 35 points in each of their first three games.

The Giants have rushed for 133 yards in the first three games. This is the first time in team history that the Giants have had 60 or fewer yards on the ground in three consecutive games.

DT Marvin Austin, who was waived by the Giants in the last round of cuts in early September, has signed with the Miami Dolphins.

No Pride and No Fight – Carolina Panthers Annihilate New York Giants 38-0: The Carolina Panthers embarrassed the New York Giants 38-0 on Sunday afternoon at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. With the loss, the Giants fell to 0-3, their worst start since 1996. The 38-point margin of defeat was the most one-sided loss by the Giants in the Tom Coughlin era. The Giants are now 3-8 in their last 11 regular-season games and 1-5 in their last six regular-season games, including three uncompetitive blowout losses.

“We never gave ourselves a chance, competitively, to be in the game,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin after the game. “I expect everybody in that room to fight with the same passion I have. And I’ll be looking hard for those who are not.”

For all intents and purposes, the game was over at halftime as the Giants were trounced by an injury-riddled, undermanned, and win-less Carolina team. More disheartening than the score was the lack of fight showed by what should have been a desperate and angry New York team.

The Panthers led 17-0 at halftime as Carolina out-gained New York 13 to 2 in first downs, 163 to 18 in total net yards, 66 to 17 in net yards rushing, and 97 to 1 net yards passing. QB Eli Manning was sacked six times before intermission, with LT Will Beatty giving up three sacks.

“That is not by any means, New York Giants football. I’m embarrassed,” said OC David Baas. “We take a lot of pride in keeping Eli clean. That was definitely not the case today.”

“The NFL season doesn’t wait for anybody,” said OG Kevin Boothe. “Whatever it is we have to fix it. For some reason we’re not playing at a very high level at all.”

After that first-half drubbing, the Giants decided to lay down like dogs and take simply accept another beat down with QB Cam Newton firing three second-half touchdown passes. By the end of the game, the Giants were out-gained 402 to 150 total net yards. The Giants were held to 60 rushing yards (14 by Manning) while the Panthers rushed for 194 yards.

Ex-New York Giants’ linebacker Chase Blackburn said he helped his new team decipher the Giants’ offense.

“I had an idea of what they run and what they like to do in situations,” Blackburn said. “We had a great game plan going in. I’ve been sharing all the information all week. Guys, all of us, linebackers were out there knowing what to do; (defensive backs) knew what kind of routes they were going to get off the route combinations. It makes for a big difference when you can play the game at that speed. We were able to play fast because we were aware of what they were going to do.”

The Panthers’ secondary was riddled with injuries, but Carolina was able to exert tremendous pressure on Manning with just their down four defensive linemen.

“Obviously they didn’t put their secondary out there on an island much and were able to get great pressure with just bringing four guys,” Manning said. “When you can drop seven guys and rush four and get pressure, it’s going to make it hard for any offense to have a successful passing game.”

“Words aren’t going to fix anything,” said Manning. “It’s about us having great practices and going out there and playing better on game day.”

“There’s something missing right now,” said DE Justin Tuck. “Guys need to look at themselves in the mirror, because if it isn’t ugly now, it can get uglier from here.”

Video lowlights are available at Giants.com.

Injury Report: FB Henry Hynoski fractured his left shoulder in the game. “I never had a significant shoulder injury, I don’t even know myself the extent of this,” said Hynoski after the game. “We’re going to find out tomorrow, we’re getting more tests done and we’ll go from there. Like I approached my last injury, I’m just going to try and get back at the earliest convenience to be there for my team.”

S Cooper Taylor also injured his shoulder in the game. He needed help getting dressed after the game; there is no word yet on the severity of the injury.

Post-Game Press Conferences: Video highlights from the post-game press conferences with Head Coach Tom Coughlin, QB Eli Manning, and DE Justin Tuck are available at Giants.com.

Post-Game Notes: Inactive for the Giants were QB Ryan Nassib (foot), RB Michael Cox, TE Adrien Robinson (foot), OT David Diehl (thumb), OG Brandon Mosley (back), DT Johnathan Hankins, and CB Corey Webster (hip).

All three are officially listed as “questionable” for the game.

The only players to not make the trip – OC David Baas (knee), OT David Diehl (thumb), and TE Adrien Robinson (foot) – have already been ruled out of the game.

September 6, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Not practicing on Friday were OC David Baas (knee), OT David Diehl (thumb), and TE Adrien Robinson (foot). All three players have officially been ruled “out” of Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

FB Henry Hynoski (knee), WR Victor Cruz (heel), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back), and DE Damontre Moore (shoulder) were limited in practice. Hynoski, Pierre-Paul, and Moore are “questionable” for the game while Cruz is “probable.”

“No, (it won’t be a game-time decision with Pierre-Paul),” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “Whatever we make our minds up. It’s not going to be game time. We’ll make up our minds before that. The medical people will have more to say about that, I’m sure…We’ll just take all of the information, based on the three days of work, listen to the medical people again, and then make that decision…He’ll be on the trip. So he can get in my ear longer. I‘d hate to be that far away from him, then he’d have to call me on the phone.”

“I’m going to make the trip,” said Pierre-Paul. “It’s going to be a game-time decision. I’m going to ask the coaching staff and I’m going to ask the coach. That’s basically it.”

“My conditioning is still down, man,” said Pierre-Paul. “It’s still down. I’ve been trying to get it up and that’s a big part, too, so I’m not going to put my team in jeopardy if I know I can’t play.”

“I feel good,” said Hynoski. “Everything’s going well. I had a great week. Every day, I feel more comfortable out there. No issues with pain or any setbacks as far as that’s concerned.”

“I’ve been practicing full-go,” said Cruz. “I’ve been limited in certain areas but I’ve been pretty much practicing in getting my footing down and cutting and things like that and everything feels pretty normal. I just want the doctors to give one last look at it and tell me what they think and then we’ll go from there.”

CB Jayron Hosley (ankle) fully practiced. Hosley is “probable” for the game.

September 2, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report – Cruz and Hosley Return to Practice: Not practicing on Monday were RB Andre Brown (leg), OC David Baas (knee), OT David Diehl (thumb), TE Adrien Robinson (foot), and DT Markus Kuhn (PUP – knee).

Head Coach Tom Coughlin was asked about Brown. “I don’t know,” said Coughlin. “We’ll see. I don’t know what I can tell you. The guy is hurt. He’s got a serious injury. What’s his status going to be? I can’t tell you that. How long? I don’t know. I really don’t. I can repeat what you hear out there, but I don’t know that’s the way it’s going to be. I know this: he has a great attitude about it and he really believes that he’ll come back faster than whatever number anybody puts on it. I’m rooting for him.”

“(Robinson’s) going to be a while,” said Coughlin. “I’m not giving you (a time table). He’s got a sore foot, so we’ll see. Those things usually are very unpredictable anyways. Hopefully he’ll get back as fast as he can because he needs to.”

WR Victor Cruz (heel) and CB Jayron Hosley (ankle) returned to practice.

“(Cruz) felt good,” said Coughlin. “He took as many reps as was planned for him to take…Limited, but it looked to me like he took probably half, maybe more.”

“Yeah, as of right now (I will play on Sunday), if everything continues to feel good in the morning and doesn’t swell up on me or anything crazy, I’ll be good to go,” said Cruz. “I’m a little ahead (of schedule). They were predicting a couple more weeks, but I was diligent in the treatment room and at home, doing the things I needed to do. Icing it and getting ready and things like that. I’m pretty much ahead of schedule and I’m happy about that.”

DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back), DE Damontre Moore (shoulder), S Antrel Rolle (ankle), and FB Henry Hynoski (knee) all practiced.

“(Pierre-Paul) practiced pretty well,” said Coughlin. “We’ll see. They obviously have a ways to go there…He’s got to practice…Practice every day. Put the uniform on. Play in the pads. See how he feels the next morning. Those are the things that he has to go through…There’s no pads on (today) and he’s coming like he’s got them on. So that’s a good sign.”

“I feel great,” said Pierre-Paul. “I feel good, (but) we’re not there. Ran off tired. I was completely tired.”

“I don’t know (if I will play Sunday),” said Pierre-Paul. “It all depends if I can take on a double team, if I’m ready for that. It’s only been the first day so we’ll see how it goes. We have a whole week ahead of us…Right now I’m doing the smart thing and just taking it day-by-day. So when I come back, I’ll be fully ready to play.”

Coughlin was asked about Hynoski. “If there’s a will, there’s a way,” said Coughlin. “I mean, this guy is all heart and he won’t miss a beat. As soon as they gave him the opportunity to get back out there, he was trying to jump in on every snap. He can come back from these things. It takes a while.”

“I’m doing good,” said Hynoski. “I practiced full today, I’m feeling good. If you want to know about Sunday, I can’t give you an answer now. That’s going to be decided later in the week, I’m assuming, by the doctors. I practiced full, no issues…I feel good out there, haven’t had any issues or setbacks. It’s just a matter of getting the go-ahead or not and we’ll see what happens at the end of this week. Every day I progress, but I think I have to progress just a little bit more to give them that go-ahead.”

Injury Update – Henry Hynoski Activated Off of the PUP: Not practicing on Thursday were WR Victor Cruz (heel), WR Louis Murphy (leg), WR Ramses Barden (knee), OC David Baas (knee), OT David Diehl (thumb), DE Damontre Moore (shoulder), CB Corey Webster (knee/groin), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (PUP – back), and DT Markus Kuhn (PUP – knee).

FB Henry Hynoski (knee) was activated from the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) list that he had been on since the start of training camp. Hynoski underwent knee surgery in late May after injuring the medial collateral ligament and fracturing the lateral plateau in his knee during an Organized Team Activity (OTA) practice.

Hynoski was limited to individual drills.

“I’m very happy to be out here with my teammates and just get out here moving around and doing some things,” said Hynoski. “Obviously, we’re starting off slow just doing individuals for a little while and then building up from there on out…I did everything…just to get back at the earliest possible date and now it’s paying off. I’m very excited to be in the position I am today.”

Hynoski was doubtful whether he would play in the remaining two preseason games, but he is hoping he will be ready by the season opener against the Cowboys. “That’s my goal, but if it takes to Week 2 or 3, that’s fine,” said Hynoski. “We have a very smart medical staff and trainers and they’re going to put me in the right position when they know I’m physically fit to be out there and performing at the best that I can.”

Head Coach Tom Coughlin was asked if Pierre-Paul or Kuhn were close to coming off of the PUP. “They’re getting close, according to what I hear,” replied Coughlin. “I’m just listening.”

Coughlin was also asked if there was any concern about Webster being ready for the opener. “I hope not,” said Coughlin. “I hope that’s long gone by then. We should get two good weeks, I think. Next week and the week after, we should be in good shape.”

S Antrel Rolle (ankle) returned to practice on a very limited basis, taking part in a few team drills but mostly doing individual drills.

DE Adrian Tracy (dehydration) returned to practice.
