Practice Squad Moves: The Washington Redskins have signed offensive guard Rishaw Johnson off of the Giants’ Practice Squad. The Giants had signed Johnson to their Practice Squad on December 2.

To fill the vacancy created by the departure of Johnson, the Giants signed linebacker Uani (Devin) Unga to the Practice Squad. Unga suffered a serious injury to his right knee (ACL, MCL, and meniscus) his last year in college in 2013. Unga lacks ideal size and overall athleticism but he is a smart, instinctive, physical, and competitive football player who plays the run well.

Notes: This season, QB Eli Manning has played eight games with a quarterback rating of at least 100, equaling the career high he set in 2009. That is the fifth-highest total in the NFL this year, behind Ben Roethlisberger (10), Aaron Rodgers (10), Peyton Manning (9), and Tony Romo (9). In 2013, Manning had just one game with a rating of at least 100.0 (102.3 in the opener in Dallas).

Manning has thrown for over 3,800 yards for the sixth consecutive season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Manning is one of just five quarterbacks in history to accomplish that feat.

Giants Sign TE Jerome Cunningham to 53-Man Roster: The New York Giants signed tight end Jerome Cunningham to the 53-man roster from the team’s Practice Squad on Wednesday. Cunningham fills the roster vacancy created when the Giants put linebacker Terrell Manning on Injured Reserve on December 2. Per an obscure NFL rule, Manning could not be replaced on the 53-man roster for three weeks after he was signed from the Bengals’ Practice Squad on November 25.

Cunningham played college football at Southern Connecticut State University from 2009-2012, but he was not with an NFL team in training camp until August 2014 when the Giants signed him. He did try out with the Indianapolis Colts in May 2013 and Arizona Cardinals in May 2014, but was not signed by either team. Cunningham lacks ideal size for the position; he’s built more like an H-Back. But he is a good athlete who catches the ball well.

Giants Sign FB Nikita Whitlock to Practice Squad: To fill the vacancy created when the Giants signed TE Jerome Cunningham to the 53-man roster, the Giants signed fullback Nikita Whitlock to the Practice Squad on Wednesday.

Whitlock, who played defensive tackle in college, was originally signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as a rookie free agent after the 2014 NFL Draft. He was cut by the Bengals in their final round of cuts and then signed by the Dallas Cowboys to their Practice Squad. The NFL suspended Whitlock in November for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) and the Cowboys terminated his Practice Squad contract. Whitlock was converted to fullback by the Bengals and he flashed in the preseason as a lead blocker with good size.

NY Post Reports Tom Coughlin Will Return as Head Coach: According to The New York Post, an unidentified source “familiar with the club’s thinking” says Tom Coughlin is “99.9 percent” likely to return as head coach of the New York Giants in 2015. The full story is available here.

But another report from Newsday says the return of Coughlin is not as certain. “I think there is a good chance he will be back, but 99.9 percent is not close,” an unidentified source “familiar with the Giants’ situation” told the paper.

Notes: Tom Coughlin has 95 regular-season wins as the Giants’ head coach. That is second in franchise history to Hall of Famer Steve Owen (153).

On Sunday, WR Odell Beckham caught 12 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns. The 12 receptions were the most ever by a Giants rookie wide receiver, and tied the highest total in a single game by a wide receiver in franchise history.

Beckham has at least 90 receiving yards in seven consecutive games, extending his NFL rookie record.

Beckham’s 972 receiving yards this season are a new Giants rookie record. The old record of 894 was set by TE Jeremy Shockey in 2002.

Beckham is the first rookie in Giants history to catch three touchdown passes in a game.

The Giants have 41 sacks this season, far exceeding their 2013 total of 34.

Paul Hazel, Houston Texans (August 9, 2014)

[contentblock id=1 img=html.png]

Giants Sign LB Paul Hazel to 53-Man Roster, Waive DT Dominique Hamilton: The New York Giants signed linebacker Paul Hazel to the 53-man roster from the team’s Practice Squad on Saturday. To make room for Hazel, the Giants waived defensive tackle Dominique Hamilton.

The signing of Hazel is a rapid promotion for a player who was just signed to the Giants’ Practice Squad on Tuesday. But with both Jacquian Williams and Mark Herzlich out with concussions, the Giants are thin at linebacker with only Jameel McClain (who is also battling a knee injury), Devon Kennard, Spencer Paysinger, and James Davidson available. In addition, Davidson was only signed to the 53-man roster from the Practice Squad on Tuesday.

Hazel was originally signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as a rookie free agent after the 2013 NFL Draft. He was claimed by the Browns after the Jaguars waived him and he played in 13 games in 2013 for Cleveland. The Texans then claimed Hazel off of waivers from the Browns in March 2014, but he did not make the team. Hazel is a tall, thin pass rusher.

On Friday, Herzlich had been ruled as officially “questionable” for the game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, but he did not make the trip.

RB Rashad Jennings Makes Trip to Tennessee: New York Giants running back Rashad Jennings (ankle) remains officially “questionable” for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, but he did make the trip to Tennessee with the team. However, linebacker Mark Herzlich (concussion), who was also listed as “questionable” on Friday, did not make the trip and will not play.

Also not playing are OT James Brewer (concussion) and LB Jacquian Williams (concussion).

BigBlueInteractive.com (BBI) Updates: In case you missed it, original-content articles from BBI today:

July 29, 2014 New York Giants Injury Report: LB Jon Beason (foot – PUP), WR Rueben Randle (hamstring), WR Trindon Holliday (leg), WR Odell Beckham (hamstring), TE Xavier Grimble (hamstring), DT Everett Dawkins (unknown), CB Ross Weaver (unknown), and CB Travis Howard (unknown) did not practice on Tuesday. The Giants said Grimble practiced, but the reporters said he did not.

Most troubling is that RB David Wilson left practice early with what is being called a “burner” to his neck. According to the Giants, the injury occurred when Wilson caught a shovel pass, turned upfield with his head down, and ran into the back of offensive lineman Eric Herman.

Wilson was only cleared for football contact on July 21 after suffering a career-threatening neck injury against the Eagles in October 2013. Wilson had surgery on January 16, 2014 to fuse vertebrae in his neck.

Wilson was sent to the Hospital for Special Surgery for a full battery of tests to determine the severity of the injury he suffered on Tuesday.

After practice, Head Coach Tom Coughlin was visibly concerned.

“He got a burner. So we’ll see,” said Coughlin. “We’ll hear what they have to say first. We were all praying that he wouldn’t have an issue and come back to work. He was cleared, as you know. We’ll see. I’m not going to speculate what it is and see what the doctors say.”

Odell Beckham, who aggravated an offseason hamstring injury at the beginning of camp and has not practiced since, talked about his injury and the tests he underwent on Monday to determine the status of the injury.

“(The tests revealed) just heavy inflammation and blood in the hamstring,” said Beckham. “The trainers are just taking it day-by-day to see. Whatever happens is what happens. It’s up to them right now on the length, however long it’s going to be…they just said it’s still day-by-day.”

“Yeah (I’m frustrated),” said Beckham. “I talked to Coach Coughlin and like he said, it’s frustrating on both ends. He wants me out there as bad as I want to be out there. It’s just kind of like you work so hard to get to where you’re at now and it’s like you can’t go out there and do the one thing that you love to do. It’s hard to just take that all the time and then have your coach, at the same time, be frustrated.”

BigBlueInteractive.com (BBI) Updates: In case you missed it, original-content articles from BBI today:

LB Jon Beason Placed on PUP List: As expected, New York Giants linebacker Jon Beason was officially placed on the preseason Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List. Beason suffered a ligament tear and small fracture to the sesamoid bone in his right foot during an OTA practice on June 12. The injury did not require surgery.

The good news is that RB David Wilson (neck), WR Mario Manningham (knee), LT Will Beatty (knee), and OG John Jerry (knee) were not placed on the PUP. Wilson, as BBI reported earlier, has been cleared by doctors to resume football contact. Wilson underwent surgery on January 16 to fuse vertebrae to repair a herniated disc in his neck. He participated in non-contact drills this spring, but was not allowed to practice when contact was possible.

“I’m back to normal,” Wilson said. “I can play regular football with no special equipment, no medication, or anything else.”

Coughlin indicated that Manningham, Beatty, and Jerry will be limited in training camp practices.

Giants Sign OG John Sullen: The New York Giants have signed street free agent offensive guard John Sullen. BBI scouting report on John Sullen:

  • Sullen was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Cincinnati Bengals after the 2013 NFL Draft. He was waived by the Bengals in August and did not play last season. Sullen has very good size and strength, but lacks ideal overall athleticism.

WR Kris Adams Waived: The Giants waived WR Kris Adams after he failed his physical. Adams was placed on Injured Reserve in August 2013 with a broken left ankle he suffered in a preseason game.

John Mara – © USA TODAY Sports Images

[contentblock id=1 img=html.png]

Some Pre-Camp Thoughts From John Mara: New York Giants President and CEO John Mara spoke briefly to the press at a charity event on Thursday. Some interesting tidbits:

  • On the Giants very busy free agent period: “It’s not going to happen every year. We’re not going to have that kind of cap room every year. And listen: If you’re that aggressive every year, there’s something wrong with your organization. But you have to do it every once in awhile.”
  • On the team’s secondary: “(It is) a stronger secondary than we’ve ever had before.”
  • On whether RB David Wilson (career-threatening neck injury) will be able to play: “We expect him to be playing this year, but that is going to depend on what the doctors tell us. So far, all signs are that he’s going to be ready to go.”
  • On new Offensive Coordinator Ben McAdoo: “I like what I’ve seen so far, but he hasn’t called a play in a game yet. (The new offense) looks great on the practice field.”
  • On his prediction for the Giants in 2014: “I was the same idiot who said last year it was the best team we’d had in years and look what happened. So, yeah. The fans do deserve better and we did our best in the offseason. It’s not just a question of doing it on the field. We think we have the pieces in place, but until we start playing games it’s just hard to tell.”
  • On DE Justin Tuck playing for the Raiders: “It’s gonna hurt seeing him in a different uniform. This one’s really gonna hurt, because he was such a great player and a great citizen for us.”
