SEPTEMBER 22, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT – DARIAN THOMPSON OUT…
New York Giants free safety Darian Thompson (sprained foot), who was limited in practice on Wednesday, missed practice on Thursday and has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins. Worse, ESPN.com is reporting that there is “serious concern” that the injury could be a long-term problem. Thompson’s foot will officially now be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

“I don’t think it’s serious,” said Thompson, who was wearing a walking boot on his left foot. “Right now, it’s just a minor sprain… I don’t know exactly what they call it, but I just know it’s on the top of the foot and they told me it’s minor,”

Offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse (calf) and defensive tackle Robert Thomas (illness) did not practice on Thursday. Running back Rashad Jennings (thumb) was limited. Defensive end Olivier Vernon (wrist) was added to the injury report but he fully practiced.

GIANTS SIGN MICHAEL HUNTER TO ROSTER; MYKKELE THOMPSON TO IR…
The New York Giants have placed safety Mykkele Thompson on Injured Reserve with a knee injury that he suffered during Sunday’s victory over the New Orleans Saints. The team also signed cornerback Michael Hunter to the 53-man roster from the team’s Practice Squad.

Thompson was drafted in the 5th round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Giants. He missed all of his rookie season after rupturing the Achilles’ tendon in his right foot during the preseason.

The Giants originally signed Hunter as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2016 NFL Draft. Hunter has a nice combination of size and speed. He is a physical, press corner who was up-and-down during the 2016 preseason for the Giants.

GIANTS TO SIGN OFFENSIVE TACKLE TO PRACTICE SQUAD…
Though not officially announced yet, ESPN is reporting that the New York Giants will sign offensive tackle Laurence Gibson to the Practice Squad. Gibson was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He has spent time with the Cowboys (2015), Chiefs (2015), Falcons (2016), and Bears (2016). He has yet to play in a regular-season game. Gibson is a very athletic lineman with good height and long arms. A better testing athlete than football player so far, Gibson needs to play with more strength and power.

BYRON STINGILY WAIVED FROM INJURED RESERVE…
The New York Giants have waived offensive tackle Byron Stingily from Injured Reserve. Stingily was placed on Injured Reserve on August 30 with a concussion. Stingily was originally drafted in the 6th round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. The Titans waived him in September 2015 and he then signed with the Steelers in October 2015. The Giants signed Stingily as an unrestricted free agent in April 2016.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) has officially been ruled as “questionable” for Sunday’s home opener against the New Orleans Saints. Defensive end Olivier Vernon (wrist) was added to the injury report but is “probable” for the game. Defensive tackle Robert Thomas (illness) has been ruled out for the second week in a row.

“If we would’ve had practice today, (Pierre-Paul) would not have practiced today,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “We’ll take a look at him tomorrow. He’ll have an opportunity to get out on the field tomorrow at practice and we’ll go from there… We’ll look at him tomorrow and see how he feels. See how he wakes up the next day and recovers.”

When asked if he was concerned about Vernon, McAdoo responded, “There is always concern when someone is on the injury report.”

Linebacker Jonathan Casillas (ribs) and safety Darian Thompson (shoulder) practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday.

“It’s doing a lot better, a lot better than it was last week,” said Casillas. “It doesn’t feel the best, it doesn’t feel like nothing’s wrong but I’m able to run around out there and do everything I’ve been doing. Definitely looking forward to playing this weekend.”

Linebacker B.J. Goodson (concussion) and cornerback Leon Hall (concussion) fully practiced.

AUGUST 24, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Tight end Will Johnson (burner), tight end Matt LaCosse (knee), safety Darian Thompson (shoulder), and safety Mykkele Thompson (concussion) did not practice on Wednesday.

Left guard Justin Pugh (shoulder) was limited.

Tight end Larry Donnell (unknown) left practice early.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Victor Cruz (groin) practiced for the second day in a row.

“Victor looked great,” Offensive Coordinator Mike Sullivan said. “He has had two strong days, got a lot of balls thrown to him. I’m excited about where he is, and hopefully he will have his opportunity against the Jets (on Saturday).

“There was the suddenness, the explosiveness, the things that I have in mind, visions of 2011 in terms of that type of quickness. So obviously that is something to be excited about, and again, we’re just progressing and hoping for the best. We’re not trying to get overly excited or put too much pressure, just taking it one day, one rep, at a time; and he’s certainly shown some flashes over yesterday.”

Cornerback Leon Hall, who just signed today, did not practice.

  • Linebacker Keenan Robinson blew up an attempted block by tight end Ryan Malleck, knocking him backwards.
  • Wide receiver Kadron Boone made an impressive one-handed catch but was out-of-bounds.
  • Wide receiver Tavarres King had an excellent practice. He made a diving, one-handed reception despite tight coverage from cornerback Eli Apple. King was targeted repeatedly throughout the 11-on-11 portion of practice.
  • Wide receiver Geremy Davis made a leaping grab down the right sideline against cornerback Eli Apple. (VIDEO) Davis followed that up with a nice catch of a low pass on a comeback route.
  • Cornerback Donte Deayon broke up a deep seam pass intended for wide receiver Victor Cruz.
  • Cornerback Janoris Jenkins broke up a flat pass intended for wide receiver Geremy Davis.

AUGUST 3, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS TRAINING CAMP REPORT…
The New York Giants held their fifth summer training camp practice on Wednesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The practice was not open to the public.

LEON HALL VISITS GIANTS AGAIN…
Unrestricted free agent cornerback Leon Hall (Cincinnati Bengals) visited the New York Giants on Wednesday. Hall had visited the team back in early May but obviously did not sign a contract with the team at that time.

The 31-year old Hall was originally drafted in the 1st round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. In his nine seasons with the Bengals, Hall has played in 121 regular-season games with 105 starts. Hall started four of the 14 games he played in last season, finishing with 44 tackles, nine pass defenses, and two interceptions. He also won “AFC Player of the Week” for his performance in a December game against the St. Louis Rams.

The aging Hall is a physical press corner who tackles very well. He is very experienced and technically-sound. The strength of Hall’s game is his ability to cover receivers out of the slot position. Versatile, Hall has also played safety in some packages. Hall has suffered two Achilles’ tendon injuries (2011 and 2013) that has robbed him of some of his explosiveness. Hall also had back surgery this offseason to repair a disc injury. He is a hard worker and team leader.

INJURY REPORT…
New York Giants defensive tackle Jay Bromley (ankle) and linebacker J.T. Thomas (hamstring) remain on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List.

Tight end Matt LaCosse left practice early with a right knee injury but returned. “He has a knee,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “But he came back. Came back and fought through it.”

Wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. (left leg) did not practice. When asked if Beckham was making progress, McAdoo responded, “Absolutely… running and cutting and we will evaluate him each day… (He) looks close.”

Place kicker Josh Brown was excused for personal reasons.

PRACTICE NOTES…
Some snippets from various media sources:

  • Quarterback Eli Manning has had a strong start to training camp and looked sharp again on Wednesday.
  • Defensive end Kerry Wynn and defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins flashed in run defense.
  • Working with the third-team defense, defensive end Romeo Okwara blew up a running play.
  • Quarterback Eli Manning hit running back Shane Vereen for a long touchdown off a wheel route. (VIDEO)
  • Linebacker Keenan Robinson worked with the first-team nickel defense and looked sharp in pass coverage.
  • Wide receiver Victor Cruz was rotated in with first-team offense. However, Cruz has yet to make many plays in practice and has not flashed his past explosiveness.
  • Cornerback Eli Apple had blanket coverage on wide receiver Geremy Davis on a go route.
  • Second-team safeties were Nat Berhe and Andrew Adams.
  • Linebacker Jonathan Casillas separated the ball from an intended receiver with a big hit.
  • Quarterback Ryan Nassib was not sharp, but he did hit tight end Matt LaCosse over the middle for a big gain.
  • Cornerback Janoris Jenkins broke up a fade pass into the end zone intended for wide receiver Roger Lewis from quarterback Eli Manning.
  • Linebacker B.J. Goodson received some second-team reps in 7-on-7 drills.
  • Quarterback Eli Manning targeted wide receiver Sterling Shepard quite a bit with success.
  • Quarterback Eli Manning hit tight end Larry Donnell deep down the right sideline, beating linebacker Jasper Brinkley. (VIDEO)
  • Defensive end Olivier Vernon gave left tackle Ereck Flowers problems with his quickness.
  • Running back Bobby Rainey broke a long run with the first-team offense out of the no-huddle.
  • Wide receiver K.J. Maye made a diving reception on a pass from quarterback Ryan Nassib.
  • Linebacker Brad Bars – a converted defensive end – flashed in run defense.
  • Cornerback Trevin Wade had a strong day playing the slot corner position.

NEW YORK GIANTS TRAINING CAMP BEGINS…
New York Giants players reported to training camp on Thursday. The first training camp practice will occur on Friday. (A complete schedule is available at Giants.com; please keep in mind that in the event of inclement weather, the practice will be held inside and NOT open to the public).

HARRISON, THOMAS, AND BROMLEY PLACED ON PUP…
New York Giants defensive tackle Damon Harrison (knee swelling), defensive tackle Jay Bromley (ankle), and linebacker J.T. Thomas (hamstring) have been placed on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List at the start of training camp. These players can come off the PUP at any time.

“We don’t think any of them are extremely serious at this point,” Head Coach Ben McAdoo said.

According to ESPN, Bromley had surgery to remove a bone spur earlier this summer, but he is expected to be able to practice soon. ESPN also reports that the swelling in Harrison’s knee is not uncommon due to fluid in his knee.

Defensive tackle Melvin Lewis was placed on the Non-Football Illness (NFI) List. No details were provided on Lewis.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Victor Cruz (calf, knee) has been cleared to practice on Friday. He passed his medical and conditioning tests.

GIANTS REPORT TO CAMP ON THURSDAY…
New York Giants players report to summer training camp on Thursday. The first training camp practice will occur on Friday. (A complete schedule is available at Giants.com). Head Coach Ben McAdoo and a number of players will address the press on Thursday.

HAKEEM NICKS SIGNS WITH SAINTS…
New York Giants unrestricted free agent wide receiver Hakeem Nicks has signed a 1-year contract with the New Orleans Saints.

Desperate for veteran wide receiver help, the Giants signed then 27-year old Hakeem Nicks off of the street in November 2015. Unfortunately, the results were not good. Nicks played in six games with two starts, but finished with only seven catches for 54 yards. It’s been a precipitous decline for Nicks ever since his stellar 2010 and 2011 seasons when he compiled 155 catches for 2,244 yards and 18 touchdowns in 28 regular-season games.

Nicks was originally drafted by the Giants in the 1st round of the 2009 NFL Draft. After two disappointing seasons in 2012 and 2013 when Nicks’ production fell to 109 passes for 1,588 yards and three touchdowns in 28 regular-season games, Nicks departed in free agency for the Indianapolis Colts. Nicks’ production in Indianapolis was disappointing too as he caught 38 passes for 405 yards and four touchdowns. He tried to catch on with the Tennessee Titans in training camp in 2015 but did not make the team. Nicks’ demise has largely been attributed to injuries, including compartment syndrome in his lower right leg in 2010 as well as a broken right foot and a poster cruciate ligament (PCL) tear in 2012.

DANIEL FELLS RETIRES…
Although not officially announced, it appears New York Giants tight end Daniel Fells has retired. Fells was placed on Injured Reserve in October 2015 after multiple career-threatening surgeries were required to address a life-threatening staph infection that developed in an injured ankle. He only played in two games in 2015 and finished with six catches for 60 yards.

Fells said on his Instagram account, “Although playing the game is no longer in the cards for me I’m grateful for the 10 year career that I was blessed to experience.”

Fells was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Atlanta Falcons after the 2006 NFL Draft. He has spent time with the Falcons, Raiders, Buccaneers, Rams, Broncos, and Patriots. The Giants signed Fells to a reserve/future contract in January 2014. He played in all 16 games for the Giants in 2014 with nine starts, accruing 16 catches for 188 yards and four touchdowns.

TOM COUGHLIN ACCEPTS JOB WITH NFL…
According to press report, former New York Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin has accepted a full-time position with the NFL’s football operations department. His exact role has yet to be announced by the League. Coughlin was de facto fired in January by the Giants after serving with the team since 2004.

Although playing the game is no longer in the cards for me I'm grateful for the 10 year career that I was blessed to experience. Thank you all for the phone calls, text messages, emails and well wishes that I've gotten over the last few months. I'm working hard to accept my physical limitations and the mental struggles that go along with them. I know that I'm lucky to be alive so I'm determined to make the most of everyday that I have. ERNIE ACCORSI, TOM COUGHLIN, JUSTIN TUCK TO RING OF HONOR…
The New York Giants have announced that Ernie Accorsi, Tom Coughlin, and Justin Tuck will be added to the team’s “Ring of Honor” during a halftime ceremony at the Giants-Bengals at MetLife Stadium on November 14.

The addition of these three will bring to 42 the number of team icons so honored. For a complete list, see the Ring of Honor section of the website.

Accorsi served at the Giants’ Assistant General Manager from 1994-1997 and General Manager from 1998-2006.

Coughlin served as the Giants’ wide receivers coach from 1988-1990 and head coach from 2004-2015. Coughlin helped lead the Giants to two NFL titles (2007 and 2011). He finished with 102-90 regular-season record (second most victories in franchise history) and an 8-3 post-season record (tied with Bill Parcells).

Tuck was a defensive end for the team from 2005-2015. Tuck was voted to the Pro Bowl twice and served as a team captain four times, finishing with 60.5 sacks in his Giants’ career.

“When you start working in the National Football League, this is not something you would ever dream could happen,” Accorsi said. “I’ve seen these in different stadiums, and when you see all the great players and coaches up there, it’s not something I ever thought could happen. I can’t even put into words what an honor it is, especially with this franchise. It’s overwhelming that someone who started at the bottom in this league could end up with some of the names up there, like Lawrence Taylor and Frank Gifford. It’s just incredible for me to get this.”

“It was a great privilege to be the 16th head coach of the New York Giants, and it’s a privilege and a tremendous honor to be a part of those great names in Giant folklore that are in the Ring of Honor,” Coughlin said. “It’s something Judy (his wife), my family and I very much appreciate. The New York Giants, to me, is the greatest franchise in the history of the NFL. We recognize the long history of the Giants and the greatest city in the world, the tremendous coaches and players that have represented the Giants over the years. It’s a great honor to be included in the same breath with some of these prestigious former players and coaches.”

“It’s a great honor,” Tuck said. “Anytime something like this is bestowed upon a person, you have to consider all the other guys up there, all the people that have paved the way for a small-town kid like me to have the opportunity to be put up in the rafters by what I consider to be the greatest football franchise there is. I don’t think it’s dawned on me yet how big a deal it is, but I’m sure that night there will be some emotions that come out and be very visible. I’m very, very excited about it.”
