October 14, 2008 New York Giants Injury Report: QB Eli Manning suffered a chest injury in the loss against the Browns on Monday night when Manning was slammed to the ground by a Cleveland defensive player early in the second quarter.

“He got hit and then he was driven into the ground,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin.  “His chest was bothering him after the game, so he was in some pain there, but I don’t have any information other than that today.  He was in the training room and we will see…I don’t know (if it will keep him out of practice).  I don’t know anything yet.  They are going to do all the tests and that type of thing.”

However, later in the evening, Manning said an MRI and x-rays revealed no serious injury.

“Just a little sore and kind of on the left side, left shoulder/chest area. Just some soreness,’ Manning said. “Shaun Rogers is a big man. He gave me a good hit and kind of pile-drove me into the ground. I don’t think it affected my play.”

“Nothing major,” said Manning. “Nothing that’s going to keep me out this week. We have practice tomorrow, so I’ll be at practice going at full speed. Just some soreness. That’s the major issue…Nothing broken, no sprains, nothing with the (throwing) shoulder. It’s all on the left side anyway. I have good movement, I have my strength. It’s really just a little banged up. There’s not a technical word for it, I don’t think. It’s nothing that should cause anything to my throwing motion at all and shouldn’t affect anything.”

Also in the loss to the Browns, LB Antonio Pierce aggravated his quad injury, LB Gerris Wilkinson suffered a mild MCL sprain, and S James Butler suffered a biceps injury. “Butler has the continuing strain with the bicep,” said Coughlin. “Wilkinson, it seemed to be a MCL, a mild MCL, and I don’t know where his status will be.  Pierce just has a reoccurrence of the strain that he had last week.”

OC Shaun O’Hara was in the hospital yesterday being treated for an infected toe.

Tyree to Start Practicing: WR David Tyree, who is currently on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List, has been cleared to practice and will start practicing today. That will begin a three-week window where he will be permitted to practice while still being on the PUP.  Once that period is over, the Giants must add him to the 53-man roster, place him on injured reserve, or waive him.

Notes: The trade deadline passed yesterday with the Giants making no trades. The team had reportedly been in contact with the Kansas City Chiefs regarding the services of TE Tony Gonzalez. The New York Post is reporting that the Giants offered the Chiefs a 4th round pick.

The Giants are 18-31-1 on Monday Night Football, including 2-2 under Tom Coughlin.

The loss to Cleveland was an end of the Giants’ 11-game road winning streak (8 regular-season games, 3 post-season games).  The Giant had last lost a road game on September 9, 2007 at Dallas, 45-35.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Monday’s game was the first in which Giants did not force a punt or a turnover in the same game since turnovers were first tracked in the mid-1930s.
