New York Giants Do Not Use Franchise Tag: The deadline to designate a player with the Franchise Tag passed on Monday, and as expected, the Giants chose not to employ the tag this year.

Tom Coughlin Comments on WR Victor Cruz: Head Coach Tom Coughlin commented yesterday on WR Victor Cruz’s pending restricted free agent status. According to press reports, it appears that the Giants and Cruz remain far apart on a new contract. The Giants are expected to tender Cruz at the first-round level, which means if they choose not to match an offer from another team, the Giants would receive that team’s first round draft pick in exchange for Cruz.

“We want Victor Cruz to be a Giant,” said Coughlin. “That is the bottom line. However, it takes two to tango. We would certainly want to do everything in our power to keep him here. Ownership has indicated that. Front office has indicated that.”

“That is where we are,” said Coughlin. “We will do whatever we can. Obviously, we have some type of limitation. We do have other players to sign. He is a huge part (of the Giants’ success) and he is very, very popular. He is a wonderful young man, he is a great story. That story should stay here.”

“I like to think that I can control everything, and that I can have something to do with making sure that something gets done that I think would be beneficial to everyone,” Coughlin said. “And certainly I believe that about Victor. We want Victor to be a Giant until the end of his career, but obviously he and his people, his agents, they’ve got to make that call. It’s a little bit frustrating in that you’d like to have it done, that’s all.”

“I expect him to be a Giant, yes,” Coughlin said. “He knows that we want him to be a Giant. He is well-aware of that.”

Quotes: Head Coach Tom Coughlin on CB Corey Webster and OT David Diehl: “I do (want them back). I think there’s no doubt they can definitely help the team. I do want them back. They can still contribute.”

Coughlin would also like soon-to-be unrestricted free agent QB David Carr back. “I understand the pull and the tug and I think David Carr’s been very happy here,” Coughlin said. “He’s left one other time due to a contract. We’ll see. I would like to have him back. I like the room with he and Eli and whoever else is in there. Don’t forget there’s another side to David Carr. David Carr can run, he’s fast, he’s athletic, no matter who we’re going to play he can be the opposition’s quarterback and do it very well. He does a good job of it. He runs the option.”
