Back-to-back playoff-less seasons hasn’t done much to hurt Tom Coughlin’s rank among the upper echelon of NFL coaches.
In a recent ‘Head Coach Power Rankings’ rating by NFL.com’s Elliot Harrison, Coughlin came in at No. 5. The article ranked every NFL coach from 1-32.
In his description, Harrison admitted the difficulty in finding the appropriate ranking for Coughlin. While the 67-year-old does have two Super Bowl Championships and a pair of AFC Championship game appearances under his belt, he also has several seasons where his teams struggled.
In recent memory, the Giants have failed to qualify for the postseason in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Ranked ahead of Coughlin were John Harbaugh (Ravens) at No. 4, Jim Harbaugh (49ers) at No. 3, Sean Payton (Saints) at No. 2 and Bill Belichick (Patriots) at No. 1. Within the NFC East, the Eagles’ Chip Kelly ranked No.18, Cowboys’ Jason Garrett No. 23 and Redskins Jay Gruden No. 30.
