JOSH BROWN SUSPENDED ONE GAME – WILL MISS OPENER…
New York Giants place kicker Josh Brown has been suspended for one regular-season game without pay for violating the NFL Personal Conduct Policy. Brown will miss the opener against the Dallas Cowboys. No specifics were given on the reason for the suspension.

“While I do not agree with the suspension, I will accept it,” said Brown. “I have exhausted the appeals process and have no other options along those lines. I will continue to work hard for this team, and I have tremendous confidence in my teammates and in my ability to move on and contribute to the team.”

“We have been supportive of Josh and will continue to be, but we accept the league’s decision,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo.

The Giants currently have two place kickers on the roster, the other being Tom Obarski. The Giants signed Obarski to a reserve/future contract in January 2016. Obarski was originally signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2015 NFL Draft, but he did not make the team.

GIANTS SIGN JOE POWELL…
The New York Giants signed cornerback Joe Powell on Wednesday. Powell played for the semi-pro Portsmouth Mustangs in 2014, the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) in 2015, and the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League (AFL) in 2016. He earned PIFL “Defensive Rookie of the Year” honors in 2015 after breaking the league record with 11 interceptions, including two he returned for touchdowns. In the AFL, Powell intercepted seven passes in nine games, returning four of the picks for touchdowns.

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
New York Giants linebacker J.T. Thomas (hamstring) remains on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List.

Wide receiver Victor Cruz (groin), wide receiver Geremy Davis (hamstring), tight end Will Johnson (burner), left guard Justin Pugh (bruised shoulder), defensive end Kerry Wynn (groin), cornerback Eli Apple (strained leg muscle), and Matt Smalley (dislocated shoulder) did not practice.

“(Cruz) had a bounce-back day today,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “He’s out there running on the side and looked pretty good. Of course, you’d like to get him in team reps and individual, but we’ll progress that way…He was able to do a little bit more today than he has…We’ll see how he wakes up and how he got through today.”

“(Pugh) wasn’t out at practice today, so it’s serious if he’s not practicing,” said McAdoo. “I don’t know that the scan showed anything, but I’m not a doctor.”

Fullback Nikita Whitlock (burner) returned to practice.

JUNE 15, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS MINI-CAMP REPORT…
The second day of the New York Giants mandatory 3-day mini-camp was held on Wednesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The mini-camp will conclude with a practice and meetings on Thursday.

GIANTS INTERESTED IN EUGENE MONROE…
ESPN is reporting that the New York Giants were involved in trade talks with the Baltimore Ravens for offensive tackle Eugene Monroe. Those talks apparently fell apart and Monroe was released on Wednesday. The Giants, Chargers, and Seahawks are speculated to have interest in his services as a free agent.

The 29-year old Monroe was originally drafted in the 1st round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars traded Monroe to the Ravens in October 2013. In seven seasons, Monroe has started regular-season 90 games. He missed five regular-season games in 2014 and 10 regular-season games in 2015 due to injury. Monroe is an athletic left tackle whose toughness and passion for the game have been questioned.

ORLEANS DARKWA SIGNS EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TENDER…
New York Giants running back Orleans Darkwa has signed his 1-year exclusive rights free agent tender.

Darkwa was the #4 running back on the Giants in 2015. He played in all 16 games with no starts and finished the season with 36 carries for 153 yards (4.3 yards per carry) and one touchdown.

Darkwa was originally signed by the Miami Dolphins as a rookie free agent after the 2014 NFL Draft. He played in four games in September before being waived in October and signed to the team’s Practice Squad. The Giants signed him off of Miami’s Practice Squad in November 2014.

Punter Brad Wing is the only unsigned exclusive rights free agent. Tight end Larry Donnell is the only unsigned restricted free agent.

NICO JOHNSON CUT AFTER FAILING PHYSICAL…
New York Giants linebacker Nico Johnson has been waived after failing his physical.

The Giants signed Johnson to the Practice Squad in November 2015 and the 53-man roster in late December. Johnson was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Since then, he has spent time with the Chiefs (2013-14), Bengals (2014-15), and Redskins (2015). Johnson has played in 18 regular-season games with three starts, accruing 22 tackles.

[contentblock id=1 img=html.png]

JOHN MARA ON WFAN
The audio of Tuesday’s WFAN Radio interview with New York Giants President/CEO John Mara is available on CBS New York’s website. Some points made by Mara:

  • Firing General Manager Jerry Reese is not in the team’s best interest. He is the right guy to turn the team around. Mara believes Reese will prove critics wrong.
  • The Giants will be interviewing a number of head coaching candidates. No decisions have yet been made.
  • He would like to have both Offensive Coordinator Ben McAdoo and Defensive Steve Spagnuolo back, but that will be the decision of the new head coach. Both of them will also interview for the head coaching position.
  • Giants will not rule out candidates without head coaching experience.
  • Mara and Reese will conduct the interviews.
  • McAdoo was not brought to the Giants with the idea that he would definitely be the next head coach.
  • QB Eli Manning’s comfort level with the current offense will be a factor but not the overriding factor in coaching decisions.
  • The Giants would be willing to trade draft picks for the right coach if the asking price was reasonable.
  • Mara would like Tom Coughlin to brainstorm about what kind of role he might serve with the Giants moving forward.
  • Coughlin realized it was time to move on. Mara said he was not 100 percent sure Coughlin really wanted to remain the head coach of the Giants. Coughlin did not fail, the organization has failed to put enough good players on the field.
  • The Giants had three bad drafts, partly due to injury but also simply missing on too many players. He feels better about the last two draft classes.
  • The Giants had been in bad salary cap shape for 5-6 years. This year they are in the best salary cap condition ever.
  • The team is discussing if changes need to be made in personnel department.
  • The Giants would like DE Jason Pierre-Paul back, but at the right price. They are hoping additional surgery may help him to evolve beyond a one-handed player.
  • WR Odell Beckham is too emotional on the field, but he is not a bad person. Other teams will use his emotions against him.
  • The foundation has slipped on defense. An inability to rush the passer killed the Giants. The Giants also need to run the ball better by improving the offensive line. Games are won and lost on the defensive line.
  • A college coach with no NFL experience would work against a potential candidate, but the team would not discount him.
  • Mara does not want to be too quick in hiring the next coach. The most important thing is to get the right guy.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS 49 – NEW YORK GIANTS 17…
The New York Giants were humiliated by the Minnesota Vikings on national television on Sunday night. With the loss, the Giants fell to 6-9, ensuring their third losing season in a row. The Giants have lost five of their last six games.

While the Vikings only slightly out-gained the Giants in first downs (17 to 15) and total net yards (368 to 363), Minnesota held dramatic advantages in rushing yards (218 to 91) and time of possession (34:57 to 25:03). The Vikings also won the turnover battle 3 to 0 as quarterback Eli Manning was intercepted three times, one resulting in an interception for a touchdown and the other giving Minnesota the football at the New York 4-yard line and leading to another touchdown two plays later.

The Giants’ defense actually held up fairly well until late in the game. They forced Minnesota to punt on their first three possessions before allowing an 8-play, 40-yard drive that set up a 32-yard field goal. They then allowed a 5-play, 44-yard drive that ended with a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to tight end Kyle Rudolph. After forcing another punt, the Vikings set up another field goal late in the half by driving just 23 yards in seven plays.

Meanwhile, the Giants’ offense, minus suspended wide receiver Odell Beckham, struggled a great deal. The Giants only gained 112 net yards in the first half, and 50 of the 77 gross passing yards gained came on one pass play to running back Rashad Jennings. The Giants’ wide receivers only had three catches in the first half for 21 yards. Manning was sacked three times in the first half alone. New York only gained six first downs, three on one drive that set up a 27-yard field goal. Worse, Manning’s pass intended for wide receiver Rueben Randle late in the second quarter was picked off and returned 35 yards for a touchdown (the extra point was missed).

At the half, the Vikings led 19-3.

The game spiraled out of control in the third quarter. After the Giants went three-and-out to start the second half, the Vikings drove 58 yards in nine plays to set up a 22-yard field goal to take a 22-3 lead. On New York’s first ensuing offensive snap, Manning was intercepted for a third time in the game and the ball was returned 32 yards to the New York 4-yard line. Two plays later, Minnesota took a commanding 29-3 advantage when running back Adrian Peterson scored. After another three-and-out by the Giants, the Vikings kicked a 53-yard field goal to go up 32-3 late in the quarter.

The Giants did score on a 72-yard catch-and-run by Randle with about a minute left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 32-10. But the ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Vikings and returned 27 yards to the Giants’ 18-yard line. Six plays later, the Vikings scored a touchdown to extend their advantage to 39-10. Then came a 4-and-out by the Giants, followed by 26-yard drive that set up a 27-yard field goal, another drive that ended on downs by the Giants, and then a humiliating 68-yard run by reserve running back Jerick McKinnon. Reserve quarterback Ryan Nassib came into the game with 3:30 left and drove the Giants to a late garbage touchdown.

Offensively, Manning finished 15-of-29 for 234 yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions. 122 passing yards came on two plays. No Giant caught more than three passes and no wide receiver caught more than two passes. Jennings did carry the football 14 times for 74 yards. Manning was sacked four times and officially hit eight times. Minnesota also had six tackles for losses.

Defensively, the Giants did not force a turnover. They did accrue three sacks: 1.5 by defensive end Robert Ayers, 0.5 by defensive end George Selvie, and 1.0 by linebacker Jonathan Casillas. New York also had six tackles for losses and seven quarterback hits.

Video lowlights are available at Giants.com.

GIANTS SIGN BARRY COFIELD, CUT BRANDON MERIWEATHER…
Though not officially announced yet, the New York Giants have signed former Giant defensive tackle Barry Cofield. To make room for Cofield, the team officially released safety Brandon Meriweather.

The 31-year old Cofield was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Giants. He started 78 regular season games in five years in New York, accruing 210 tackles and 10.5 sacks. He signed with the Washington Redskins after the 2010 season and played four seasons in Washington, starting 51 games and accruing 100 tackles and 9 sacks. Cofield missed half of the 2014 season with a high ankle sprain and groin injury and was released by the Redskins in February 2015. In March 2015, he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip. Cofield is an average-sized defensive tackle, but he is strong, consistent, and occasionally flashes the ability to penetrate and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. While Cofield is not overly stout at the point-of-attack, he is a better-than-average run defender who fights hard and hustles. Cofield is smart and team-oriented.

The Giants signed Meriweather in August 2015 after injuries hit the safety position hard. Meriweather was originally drafted in the 1st round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He has played with the Patriots (2007-10), Chicago Bears (2011), and Washington Redskins (2012-14). Meriweather started the first 11 games of this season for the Giants until a knee injury kept him out of the past two games. He accrued 53 tackles, 7 pass defenses, and 2 interceptions.

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT – DEVON KENNARD OUT AGAINST PANTHERS…
DE George Selvie (concussion), DT Markus Kuhn (knee), and LB Devon Kennard (hamstring/foot) did not practice on Wednesday despite practice being more of a walk-thru. Head Coach Tom Coughlin said Kennard will not play this weekend against the Carolina Panthers.

LT Ereck Flowers (ankle) practiced on a limited basis. “I practiced today, I felt good,” said Flowers. “It’s just one of those, after the season, I’ll get it right. There’s no time to (rest), you know what I’m saying.” Flowers said he is playing this weekend despite aggravating his high ankle sprain during Monday’s game against the Dolphins.

ELI MANNING NAMED “NFC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK”…
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has been named the “NFC Offensive Player of the Week” for his performance against the Miami Dolphins on Monday night. In that game, Manning completed 27-of-31 passes for 337 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. He had a quarterback rating of 151.5. This is the second time this season that Manning has won the award. The first time was for his performance against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5. This is Manning’s fourth career “NFC Player of the Week” award. He was also honored in 2006 Week 2 and 2011 Week 3, each for his performance in Giants’ victories in Philadelphia.

QUINCY MONK PASSES AWAY…
Former New York Giants linebacker Quincy Monk (2002-03), who was drafted by the team in the 7th round of the 2002 NFL Draft, has passed away at the age of 36 due to cancer (adenocarcinoma). He leaves behind a wife and two children.

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
TE Larry Donnell (neck), LG Justin Pugh (concussion), and LB Mark Herzlich (quad) did not practice on Wednesday.

Pugh is still experiencing concussion-like symptoms 17 days after he was injured against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 8th. Head Coach Tom Coughlin said that Pugh has improved “very little.”

The situation with Donnell is also sounding more serious. Donnell said on Monday that he was cleared to return to practice. “(Donnell) continues to have the issues,” said Coughlin.

“It’s not looking good,” said Donnell. “Monday, I was fine. I was out there running, jumping around. I felt good, but I had more tests to get cleared yesterday and they found something else. So I’ve got to go talk to them about it and see what’s going on…I feel fine now, but I mean obviously something is wrong, so we’ve just got to figure it out and see what the process is…We’ve got to make sure everything’s OK in there. That’s more than football you’re talking about, when it’s your neck.”

OC Weston Richburg (ankle) and LB J.T. Thomas (ankle) practiced on a limited basis.

“(Richburg) going to be limited and we’ll see,” said Coughlin before practice. “We expect to hope to have him take a limited number of snaps but take some snaps, and we’ll see.”

OG Geoff Schwartz (ankle), DE Damontre Moore (hamstring), LB Uani ‘Unga (neck),  CB Prince Amukamara (pectoral), and CB Leon McFadden (groin) fully practiced.
