Giants’ Beat Writer Practice Reports: The following are brief practice reports provided by the NY/NJ beat writers who cover the Giants:

Injury Report: Not practicing yesterday were WR Plaxico Burress (ankle), WR Mario Manningham (quad), WR David Tyree (PUP – knee), RT Shane Olivea (back), LB Jonathan Goff (back), and CB Sam Madison (sports hernia).

“Manningham is making progress, and I hope he can be ready in another week,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “I think they’re trying to see if (Olivea) will be able to go at some point this week.”

DE Osi Umenyiora (hip), DE Wallace Gilberry (ankle), LB Gerris Wilkinson (knee), LB Zak DeOssie (back), and S Craig Dahl (knee) did not practice in the morning, but they all practiced in the evening.

WR Amani Toomer (leg), DE Justin Tuck (foot), LB Danny Clark (groin), and R.W. McQuarters (personal reasons) practiced in the morning, but did not do so in the evening. LT David Diehl (ribs) was limited in the evening.

The good news on Goff is that General Manager Jerry Reese said there is a chance Goff could be back in time for the preseason finale.

Burress did run some routes on the side yesterday. He is also getting used to the special footwear designed to help his ankle/foot. “It’s putting my foot in a normal position where the foot is supposed to be,” said Burress. “It’s taking time to get used to, but I’ll be all right. I’m just trying to work the soreness out from the orthotics or whatever, get out there and go do my thing…Of course. I definitely want to be out there, but Plaxico Burress has to take care of Plaxico Burress. I’m going to make all the right judgments as far as my health, as far as my ankle before I go out there on the football field. When I get out there, I’m going to be running a hundred miles an hour with no restrictions.”

TE Eric Butler (ankle) and CB Darren Barnett (ankle) returned to practice.

Burress Downbeat on Contract Talks; Reese Isn’t: WR Plaxico Burress sounded very downbeat yesterday on the prospects of receiving a contract extension. “I don’t think you guys will see (my agent) around here (in Albany) anymore,” said Burress. “For myself, I just want to get healthy. I’m going to go out and do the things I’m capable of doing. When I get healthy, I think everybody around here will have a lot of appreciation for that when I get back on the football field when I’m healthy.”

Burress also said he doesn’t want to continue talks after the regular season has started. “For a guy like myself, when I’m on the football field, I’m concentrating on football,” said Burress. “When I’m off the football field, my mind is far away from football. So talking to me during the season while I’m off the field, it won’t do no justice for a guy like myself. If you wanted to get it done, it probably would have been done a long time ago. We’re three or four weeks into (training camp), so I’m just looking to get healthy and be 100 percent before the first game.”

However, General Manager Jerry Reese sounded positive, saying that the Giants and Plaxico’s agent were still working on a new deal. Reese also said, “I’m optimistic we’ll get something done” before the start of the regular season.

Giants Waive Two, Sign Two: The Giants waived/injured DE Robert Henderson (ankle) and S Nehemiah Warrick (knee) yesterday. Henderson was drafted in the 6th round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Giants.

The team signed free agents S Stuart Schweigert and DE Antonio Reynolds to fill their roster spots.
