New “Giant Thoughts” Article: The Training Dilemma by Eric from BigBlueInteractive.com
Latest Coaching News and Rumors: Here is the latest news/rumors on those coaches actually or supposedly being considered by the Giants for their defensive coordinator vacancy (see yesterday’s “News and Notes” for further background):
- Jim Haslett: He has reportedly agreed to become the new defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins. Haslett apparently spoke to the Giants by phone, but no interview was scheduled. An unidentified team source told The Daily News that Haslett was a fallback option for the Giants, not a primary target.
- Romeo Crennel: His agent has reportedly told the Giants that he is pursuing the defensive coordinator vacancy with the Kansas City Chiefs. Tom Coughlin reportedly spoke to Crennel by phone on Monday.
- Mike Zimmer: He chose to re-sign with the Cincinnati Bengals as their defensive coordinator.
- Perry Fewell: He is still supposedly considering his options, which include possible defensive coordinator positions with the Giants or Bears. Strangely however, Fewell’s agent has told The Daily News that his client has not received a formal offer from either team.
Meanwhile, The New York Post is reporting that a Jets’ team source says the Giants have not yet inquired about Jets’ linebacker coach Bob Sutton, who also has experience as the Jets’ defensive coordinator.
Gilbride Not Interested in Any Lateral Coaching Move: According to the agent for Giants’ offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, Gilbride would not be interested in leaving the Giants for a similar position with another team. Regardless, Gilbride is still under contract for one more season and the Giants would have to give Gilbride permission to talk to another team.
There is speculation that Gilbride could once again become a candidate for the Oakland Raiders’ head coaching job if the Raiders fire Tom Cable.
News on the Coaches the Giants Fired: Former Giants’ defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan was hired by the Miami Dolphins yesterday to become the team’s new linebacker coach.
According to the NFL Network, former Giants’ defensive line coach Mike Waufle has interviewed with the Washington Redskins for their defensive line position.
