June 7, 2010 New York Giants OTA Practice: The Giants held their ninth Organized Team Activity (OTA) practice yesterday, and their third OTA open to the media. The Giants will hold three more OTAs, including one more OTA media day this Friday.

A full-squad mini-camp will will be held June 15-17. The afternoon practice on June 15 (2:50-4:30PM) will be held inside the new stadium and open to the public.

The following are some brief media reports from Monday’s OTA practice:

Injury Update: Not practicing yesterday were WR Hakeem Nicks (offseason toe and wrist surgery), TE Kevin Boss (offseason ankle surgery), OG/OC Kevin Boothe (offseason pectoral surgery), and S Kenny Phillips (still recovering from knee surgery).

Nicks worked individually with the quarterbacks for the first time yesterday. “It felt good,” Nicks said. “My goal is to be full-go by next week (for the mini-camp).”

Phillips ran on the sideline. “He and the doctors have all stated that he should be ready to go in training camp,” said Safeties Coach David Merritt. “Now whether that’s one a day, whether that’s two a days…The kid is running right now. I don’t know how much cutting he’s doing on the knee, but I’m looking for him to come back in training camp. I’m not looking to put him in mini-camp or anything like that.”

It was revealed yesterday that CB Bruce Johnson played the second half of the 2009 season with a broken wrist that required offseason surgery.

Notes and Quotes: Jonathan Goff continues to see most of the snaps with the first-team at middle linebacker, but rookie Phillip Dilliard has also received some snaps with the first unit.

“I like where (Dilliard) is right now,” said Linebackers Coach Jim Herrmann. “He is comfortable and the guys are comfortable with him. You can watch him and he is with a different vet every day. His personality is starting to come out and I like that in a young guy. And when he is on the field, regardless of who he is with, as the MIKE linebacker he takes control and does a good job.”

Safeties Coach David Merritt on Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell’s system: “That is the last thing (I would call Fewell), a Tampa-2 guy. I would label Coach Fewell as a multiple front, multiple-coverage defensive coordinator. And to be honest with you, because of what he did in Chicago and being under Coach (Dick) Jauron (in Buffalo) also, I thought he was going to be a Tampa-2 guy. But that’s the last thing you’re going to see us out there playing, is the Tampa-2, because that’s not what he is. We are rotating, we are disguising and moving around. Coach Fewell and his defense, it’s a multiple front and a multiple cover scheme that we are playing.”
