JASON PIERRE-PAUL’S SEASON PROBABLY OVER AFTER SURGERY…
In a shocking development, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had surgery Wednesday morning to repair the groin/sports hernia injury he suffered during Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pierre-Paul is expected to miss at least six weeks. There is a chance Pierre-Paul could return if the Giants make the playoffs and win one or two playoff games.

“We wish JPP a speedy recovery, but we have to move on,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “You can’t expect one person to jump in and fill his shoes. He’s a very talented player. We’ll use all hands on deck.”

McAdoo was asked if the Giants would put him on season-ending Injured Reserve. “Too early to tell,” replied McAdoo. “We’re going to monitor. He just got out of surgery a little while ago. We’ll see how he feels and how he progresses.”

DECEMBER 7, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (core muscle), defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins (quadriceps), safety Nat Berhe (concussion), and wide receiver/returner Dwayne Harris (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday.

“They just want to make sure that I am full-go on Sunday, so it is really just taking it a day at a time and not really trying to push myself,” said Hankins.

Defensive end Owa Odighizuwa (knee), linebacker Mark Herzlich (concussion), cornerback Coty Sensabaugh (ribs), and left guard Justin Pugh (knee) practiced on a limited basis.

“I am feeling good,” said Pugh. “Obviously today was a little half and half, it wasn’t a full practice and tomorrow will be good to see, you get uppers on, get pads on, see how I am feeling, so that will be the true test… My knee is feeling great, so I have all intentions of going out and playing on Sunday. We just have to make sure that we are taking the right steps and like I keep saying, I feel like a broken record, making sure that we don’t have any setbacks, but every day I am feeling good, so it is solid.”

Running back Shane Vereen (tricep), who is currently on Injured Reserve, continued to practice.

“There’s a chance that we may have a package for Shane if he’s ready to go (against the Cowboys), said Head Coach Ben McAdoo.

SEPTEMBER 22, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT – DARIAN THOMPSON OUT…
New York Giants free safety Darian Thompson (sprained foot), who was limited in practice on Wednesday, missed practice on Thursday and has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins. Worse, ESPN.com is reporting that there is “serious concern” that the injury could be a long-term problem. Thompson’s foot will officially now be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

“I don’t think it’s serious,” said Thompson, who was wearing a walking boot on his left foot. “Right now, it’s just a minor sprain… I don’t know exactly what they call it, but I just know it’s on the top of the foot and they told me it’s minor,”

Offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse (calf) and defensive tackle Robert Thomas (illness) did not practice on Thursday. Running back Rashad Jennings (thumb) was limited. Defensive end Olivier Vernon (wrist) was added to the injury report but he fully practiced.

Will Beatty, New York Giants (October 19, 2014)

NEW YORK GIANTS RE-SIGN WILL BEATTY…
Though not officially announced, the New York Giants have re-signed offensive tackle Will Beatty. The contract is reportedly a 1-year deal that includes $1.1 million in guaranteed money and $750,000 in incentives. Beatty was released/failed physical by the Giants in February.

Beatty had two years left on his contract before the Giants cut him in February. He was scheduled to make $6.625 million in salary in 2016 and count $9.175 million against the 2016 salary cap. Cutting Beatty in February saved the Giants $4.175 million against the cap with $5 million in dead money.

Beatty was placed on the Reserve/Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List in September 2015 as he was still recovering from surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle he suffered in May lifting weights. He remained on the PUP the entire season as a rotator cuff injury that required surgery also became an issue. Beatty started all 16 games at left tackle for the Giants in 2014 and had a solid season. He rebounded from a terribly inconsistent 2013 season, as well as a fractured tibia that he suffered in the regular-season finale at the end of that year. Since Beatty was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Giants, he has had issues staying healthy, including a broken foot in 2010, a detached retina in 2011, a back injury that caused him to miss offseason work in 2012, the broken leg in 2013, and the pectoral tear and rotator cuff injuries in 2015.

Beatty is a big lineman with long arms and a very good athlete. When on top of his game, Beatty can mirror and slide with the best pass rushers, and is athletic enough to pull and engage defenders at the second level in the run game. However, Beatty is more of a finesse player. He does not play with a lot of strength and power and he is not a very physical or aggressive blocker. Beatty still has consistency issues.

NEW YORK GIANTS CUT ELEVEN PLAYERS…
The New York Giants made 12 transactions to get under the 75-man roster limit that all teams need to reach by 4:00PM on Tuesday.

Placed on Injured Reserve:

  • LT Byron Stingily (concussion)

Waived/Injured:

  • S/CB Bennett Jackson
  • S Cooper Taylor

AUGUST 30, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…

AUGUST 3, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS TRAINING CAMP REPORT…
The New York Giants held their fifth summer training camp practice on Wednesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The practice was not open to the public.

LEON HALL VISITS GIANTS AGAIN…
Unrestricted free agent cornerback Leon Hall (Cincinnati Bengals) visited the New York Giants on Wednesday. Hall had visited the team back in early May but obviously did not sign a contract with the team at that time.

The 31-year old Hall was originally drafted in the 1st round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. In his nine seasons with the Bengals, Hall has played in 121 regular-season games with 105 starts. Hall started four of the 14 games he played in last season, finishing with 44 tackles, nine pass defenses, and two interceptions. He also won “AFC Player of the Week” for his performance in a December game against the St. Louis Rams.

The aging Hall is a physical press corner who tackles very well. He is very experienced and technically-sound. The strength of Hall’s game is his ability to cover receivers out of the slot position. Versatile, Hall has also played safety in some packages. Hall has suffered two Achilles’ tendon injuries (2011 and 2013) that has robbed him of some of his explosiveness. Hall also had back surgery this offseason to repair a disc injury. He is a hard worker and team leader.

INJURY REPORT…
New York Giants defensive tackle Jay Bromley (ankle) and linebacker J.T. Thomas (hamstring) remain on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List.

Tight end Matt LaCosse left practice early with a right knee injury but returned. “He has a knee,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “But he came back. Came back and fought through it.”

Wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. (left leg) did not practice. When asked if Beckham was making progress, McAdoo responded, “Absolutely… running and cutting and we will evaluate him each day… (He) looks close.”

Place kicker Josh Brown was excused for personal reasons.

PRACTICE NOTES…

  • Second-team safeties were Nat Berhe and Andrew Adams.

The final day of the New York Giants mandatory 3-day mini-camp was held on Thursday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Thursday’s practice was mainly a walk-thru. The veterans are now off until they are required to report to summer training camp on July 28. The rookies will be around until next Wednesday.

The New York Giants have announced that they have signed linebacker B.J. Goodson, the team’s 4th round draft pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. All of the Giants draft picks are now officially signed.

EUGENE MONROE UPDATE…
ESPN is reporting that the New York Giants have been in contact with offensive tackle Eugene Monroe’s agent since Monroe’s release on Wednesday. Monroe supposedly is assessing his options and may schedule visits next week with multiple teams. ESPN says Monroe would prefer to play left tackle, but will consider playing right tackle.

The 29-year old Monroe was originally drafted in the 1st round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars traded Monroe to the Ravens in October 2013. In seven seasons, Monroe has started regular-season 90 games. He missed five regular-season games in 2014 and 10 regular-season games in 2015 due to injury.

“J.T. has a lower leg injury,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “It is something that we feel he will be ready for camp.”

When McAdoo was asked about LaCosse, Hughes, and Thompson, he replied, “No, same thing, we are going to hold onto those guys until camp…We expect (Thompson) to be ready to go for training camp.”

Wide receiver Victor Cruz (calf) took part in individual drills and some walk-thru team drills. It was the first time he has practiced since August 2015 when he suffered a calf injury that later required surgery. “It was good to have Victor back in the fold,” said McAdoo. “(It was) another small step today. We felt it was time to take the next step…He ran a couple routes versus air, versus man to man, stuck his foot in the ground and looked like he could get some separation.”

The schedule includes five prime time games: two Monday nights (at Minnesota, home vs. Cincinnati), two Sunday nights (at Green Bay, home against Dallas), and a late-season Thursday night game in Philadelphia. It is the fourth time in five seasons the Giants will open against the Cowboys.

The Giants will play six games against 2015 playoff teams: Washington (2), Minnesota, Green Bay, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

  • Week 1: Sunday, Sept. 11 – at Dallas Cowboys, 4:25 p.m.

  • Week 15: Sunday, Dec. 18 – vs. Detroit Lions, 1:00 p.m.*
  • Week 16: Thursday, Dec. 22 – at Philadelphia Eagles, 8:25 p.m.
  • Week 17: Sunday, Jan. 1 – at Washington Redskins, 1:00 p.m.*

* Subject to flexible scheduling.

“It’s an exciting time in the offseason with the schedule being released,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “We’re certainly going to take them one at a time. But playing the AFC North and the NFC North, two divisions that are very competitive, not to mention the NFC East, will be a huge challenge for us.

“It’s a great opportunity opening the season at Dallas. All of us in the building are looking forward to it.

“The bye comes at a perfect time, around the mid-point of the season, and after a trip to London, – which is a tremendous opportunity, and exciting for us. It’s good for the league, and it’s good for the Giants and the Rams to play overseas. The bye coming right after it, followed by three home games vs. three good opponents in a row will be exciting for us, especially with the Monday night game against Cincinnati.”

BRAD WING SIGNS EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TENDER…
New York Giants punter Brad Wing has signed his 1-year exclusive rights free agent tender.

The Giants acquired Wing from the Pittsburgh Steelers by trade for a conditional 7th-round draft pick in September 2015, replacing the popular-but-declining Steve Weatherford. Wing responded with a strong season, averaging 44.5 yards per punt (38.9 net). He had 33 kicks downed inside the 20-yard line, tying a team single-season record.

An Australian, the left-footed Wing was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2013 NFL Draft. He did not make the team but he made the Steelers roster in 2014. Wing combines a strong leg with good directional placement skills. He also holds for both field goals and place kicks.

All of the team’s exclusive rights free agents are now signed. Tight end Larry Donnell is the only unsigned restricted free agent.

JOHN MARA SAYS IT’S TIME TO PICK IT UP…
New York Giants President and CEO John Mara spoke briefly with reporters on Wednesday.

“Every draft is important, but I would say this one moreso than usual,” Mara said. “Because we’re picking so high, and because we’re coming off of three-and-a-half losing years. It’s time to pick it up. We spent all this money in free agency, I think we got better, but we’re still not there. We need some impact players coming out of this draft.”

Speaking about the upcoming NFL Draft (April 28-30), Mara said, “If the coach and GM agree on the pick, chances are I’m not going to have anything to say about it. If there seems to be some disagreement in the room, maybe with some scouts or whomever, then that might be something I want to (get involved with). But a lot of times, they work those things ahead of time.”

NEW YORK GIANTS OFFSEASON PROGRAM BEGINS…
The New York Giants offseason program began on Monday, kicking off the 9-week “voluntary” program that by NFL rules is broken into three phases:

  • Phase One (Two Weeks): Consists of activities limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only.
  • Phase Two (Three Weeks): Consists of on-field workouts that may include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.
  • Phase Three (Four Weeks): Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or “OTAs”. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

The Giants will hold a “voluntary” mini-camp on April 26-28. The team’s OTAs will be held on May 23-24, May 26, June 1-3, June 6-7, and June 9-10. A mandatory mini-camp will be held on June 14-16.

NEW YORK GIANTS PLAYER MEDIA SESSIONS…
Transcripts and video clips of Monday’s media conference calls with the following New York Giants players are available in The Corner Forum section of the website and at Giants.com:

QUOTES…
Linebacker Kelvin Sheppard on coming to the Giants: “This is my sixth year in the league now, so I know the different vibes you get when you go in a facility. When I came in this one, the aura, a lot of the players weren’t here, but the aura. Then with OV signing – my boy, Olivier (Vernon) – it was a no-brainer. He’s one of the closer people I was with down with the Dolphins; sitting next to me in all the meetings and everything. When he heard I was coming up (for a visit), he was like, ‘Man, you better sign. I need you up here, it’ll be good for the team and us.’…(Dwayne Harris is) my cousin on my father’s side. He lived probably about 15-20 minutes from me (when they were growing up). He went to East Carolina, I went to LSU. We went to separate high schools but we were close.”

NEW YORK GIANTS SIGN BYRON STINGILY…
The New York Giants have officially signed unrestricted free agent offensive tackles Byron Stingily (Pittsburgh Steelers). Following up on yesterday’s updates, the Giants have also officially confirmed the signing of unrestricted free agent running back Bobby Rainey (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and unrestricted free agent linebacker Kelvin Sheppard (Miami Dolphins).

The 27-year old, 6’5”, 318-pound Stingily was originally drafted in the 6th round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. The Titans waived him in September 2015 and he then signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in October 2015. In five seasons, Stingily has played in 20 regular-season games with nine starts (eight at right tackle and one at tight end). Stingily is an athletic lineman with good size. He plays more of a finesse, positional game. A better pass protector than run blocker, Stingily is not a physical player.

MONTORI HUGHES PROMOTED TO 53-MAN ROSTER…
The New York Giants have signed defensive tackle Montori Hughes to the 53-man roster from the team’s Practice Squad. Hughes fills a vacancy created when the Giants put defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins on season-ending Injured Reserve on Tuesday with a torn pectoral muscle that will require surgery.

The Giants signed Hughes to the Practice Squad in September 2015. Hughes was originally drafted in the 5th round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. In his two seasons with the Colts, he played in 16 games with one start. Hughes is a strong, mammoth (6’4”, 350lbs) nose tackle-type lineman who can hold his ground against the double team. He is a decent athlete for his size with some quickness to his game.

LOUIS NIX AND NICO JOHNSON ADDED TO PRACTICE SQUAD…
The New York Giants have signed defensive Louis Nix and linebacker Nico Johnson to the Practice Squad. Nix and Johnson fill the Practice Squad vacancies created when the team promoted cornerback Tramain Jacobs and and defensive tackle Montori Hughes to the 53-man roster. Jacobs was signed to the 53-man roster last Saturday.

Nix was signed by the Giants after he was waived by the Houston Texans in September 2015. The Giants waived Nix on Saturday to make room for cornerback Tramain Jacobs on the 53-man roster. Nix was originally drafted in the 3rd round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Texans.

Johnson was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs waived him in August 2014 and signed him to their Practice Squad. The Bengals signed Johnson to their 53-man roster in October 2014, but waived him in August 2015. The Redskins signed Johnson to their Practice Squad in September, but terminated his contract a month later. Johnson has played in 17 regular-season games with three starts, accruing 22 tackles. Johnson is a big linebacker (6’2”, 249lbs) who plays the run well, but isn’t as adept in pass coverage. He is a hard worker.

NOTES…
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Giants’ nine sacks is their lowest total through nine games since team sacks were first compiled in 1963.

The Giants have three rushing touchdowns this season, their lowest total through nine games since they had two in 1996.

The Giants lead the NFL with 21 takeaways, 13 interceptions (tied with two teams), and a plus-12 turnover differential.
