Seattle Seahawks 23 – New York Giants 0: The Seattle Seahawks defeated the New York Giants 23-0 on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. With the loss, the Giants fell to 5-9 on the season, ensuring their first losing season since 2004.

The final score was closer than the actual game. The Seahawks led 13-0 at halftime as the Giants were held to two first downs and 54 total net yards. By the end of the third quarter, the Giants had four first downs. New York did not cross midfield on offense until mid-way through the fourth quarter. By game’s end, Seattle out-gained the Giants in first downs (21 to 12), total net yards (327 to 181), net yards rushing (134 to 25), net yards passing (193 to 156), and time of possession (33:58 to 26:02).

QB Eli Manning threw five interceptions and completed 18 of 31 passes for 156 yards. He also fumbled twice (both fumbles being recovered). Manning now has 25 interceptions on the season. RB Andre Brown was the Giants’ leading rusher with 17 yards on 11 carries. WR Jerrel Jernigan was the leading receiver with seven catches for 67 yards, mostly coming in garbage time.

Given the offensive ineptitude, the defense actually played decently in holding Seattle to only 23 points and 327 yards. Seattle scoring drives were 11 yards (field goal), 62 yards (touchdown), 40 yards (field goal), 39 yards (field goal), and 16 yards (touchdown). S Antrel Rolle intercepted one pass (his sixth of the season) and the Giants sacked QB Russell Wilson four times and hit him seven times. RB Marshawn Lynch was held to 47 yards on 16 carries.

“I expected a great effort today,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin after the game. “I think defensively and with our special teams, we got it. Offensively we did not – there’s no way to sugarcoat it. A pathetic offensive performance – we didn’t block anybody, we didn’t make any plays, we didn’t create any opportunities for ourselves. I told the players who prepared and gave great effort that I appreciated what they did, and I told those that were obvious they had not, that I felt sorry for them because they’re missing the whole point.”

“Coach Coughlin can’t take any of this blame,” said Rolle after the game. “Like I said, personally, I won’t allow that. He can’t take any of this blame. Coaches coach and they did a phenomenal job getting us prepared for this. We had a great week of practice. Everything that we saw out there from their offense, we went over with our coaches, defensive coordinator, assistant coaches, so forth and so on, and they did an exceptional job preparing us for today. Coach Coughlin, he’s a coach, but he can’t coach heart, he can’t make a play or have heart, he can’t make a player have passion about this game, and that’s what we were lacking out there today. Like I said, coach can say what he wants, but personally, I won’t allow him to take that because coaches coach and the players play the game.”

“Obviously sometimes out there today, we looked like we didn’t have a pulse and you can never do that playing a game of this magnitude, playing a game that’s this physical and playing an opponent like the Seattle Seahawks that live and die by pride, swagger, confidence,” said Rolle. “We knew that coming into the game today. They imposed their will on us today.”

This is the first time the Giants have suffered two shutout defeats in the same season since 1996.

San Diego Chargers Crush New York Giants 37-14; Giants Eliminated from Playoff Contention: The San Diego Chargers mauled the New York Giants 37-14 on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. With the loss, the Giants fell to 5-8 on the season. The Giants were also officially eliminated from playoff contention with three regular-season games left to play.

The game was basically over at halftime with the Chargers taking a 24-0 lead. The Giants had six possessions before intermission, three ending with punts, two with turnovers, and the final possession of the half ending at the Chargers’ 6-yard line as time expired. Meanwhile, the Chargers scored on four of their five first-half possessions with drives of 50, 76, 67, and 39 yards resulting in three touchdowns and a field goal. At the half, the Chargers had gained 15 first downs, were 7-of-9 on third down (78 percent), and had accrued 250 total net yards.

The Giants did score touchdowns on their first two possessions of the second half. The first was set up when DE Justin Tuck sacked QB Phillip Rivers, forcing a fumble that DT Cullen Jenkins recovered at the San Diego 18-yard line. Seven plays later, RB Peyton Hillis scored from one yard out. On the Giants’ next possession, New York drove 86 yards in 11 plays with QB Eli Manning hitting TE Brandon Myers for a 5-yard touchdown. The Giants’ last two drives of the second half ended with a turnover on downs when Manning was sacked on 4th-and-5 at the Giants’ 42-yard line, and an interception by Manning with less than two minutes to play.

The Chargers kept pouring it on in the second half. After the turnover to start the third quarter, San Diego scored a touchdown and two field goals on their next three drives. They simply knelt on the ball to end the game on their final possession.

Offensively, Manning finished the game 20-of-32 for 259 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. His leading receivers were WR Hakeem Nicks (5 catches for 135 yards), WR Victor Cruz (5 catches for 42 yards), and Myers (4 catches for 26 yards and a touchdown). RB Andre Brown gained 81 yards on 16 carries and Hillis gained 11 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Brown fumbled the ball away once.

Defensively, the Chargers scored on seven of nine possessions (not counting the final knee-down). The Chargers finished the game 10-of-15 on third down (67 percent) and held a 36:56 to 23:04 time of possession advantage. San Diego also gained 144 yards rushing.

Justin Tuck Named “NFC Defensive Player of the Week”: DE Justin Tuck has been named the “NFC Defensive Player of the Week” for his performance against the Washington Redskins last Sunday. In the game, Tuck was credited with four sacks and five tackles.

Tuck is the third Giant in five weeks to win the award, the other two being CB Terrell Thomas and DE Jason Pierre-Paul. This is the second time Tuck has won the award, the first time being in Week 1 of the 2009 NFL season, also against the Washington Redskins.

December 4, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Not practicing on Wednesday were DE Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) and CB Terrell Thomas (knee).

“I’m going to take it day-by-day,” said Pierre-Paul. “I can’t really give you an answer on that right now (on whether I will play on Sunday). The only thing that I can do right now is to take it day-by-day and I’ll continue to come in and get treatment twice daily and rehab it.”

Pierre-Paul was asked if he was hopeful he would play again this season. “Hopefully,” responded Pierre-Paul. “I hope so. Like I said, I’m taking it day-by-day. I’m in the training room 24/7. Even at home I’m doing rehab. I’m doing everything that I possibly can to put me back on the field.”

Pierre-Paul was also asked if his shoulder would eventually need surgery. “I don’t think so,” said Pierre-Paul. “I hope not. That would set me back some more, I hope not. I’m pretty sure it’s nothing that needs surgery on, it just needs rest. I’ve been rehabbing it 24/7, even at home, so hopefully it can get better before the season’s over with.”

CB Trumaine McBride (groin), CB Corey Webster (ankle), and RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) practiced on a limited basis.

Notes: With four games remaining, QB Eli Manning has been sacked a career-high 31 times this season. His previous high was 30 sacks in 2009. Last year, Manning was sacked just 19 times.

The Redskins game was the 24th time in Manning’s career that he rallied his team from a 4th quarter deficit. That places him fifth among active quarterbacks, behind Peyton Manning (50), Tom Brady (34), Drew Brees (31), and Ben Roethlisberger (28).

The Giants have committed an NFL-high 31 turnovers (19 interceptions, 12 lost fumbles). Their opponents have scored 102 points off of those giveaways.

The Giants have had at least one giveaway in each of their 12 games. The last season in which they committed a turnover in every game was 2007.

Cowboys Win on the Last Play – © USA TODAY Sports Images

Giants Fall Short in Game, and Season: The Dallas Cowboys defeated the New York Giants 24-21 on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. With the loss, the Giants fall to 4-7 on the season (1-3 in the division). The Giants now trail both the 6-5 Cowboys (4-0 in the division) and 6-5 Eagles (3-2 in the division) with five games to play. In a nutshell, unless the Giants win their remaining games and the Cowboys and Eagles both collapse, the Giants are not going to make the playoffs for the second year in a row.

The game started off slowly for both teams as the Cowboys and Giants exchanged punts twice. On the second play of Dallas’ third possession, S Antrel Rolle intercepted QB Tony Romo at the Giants’ 21-yard line. However, three plays later, WR Victor Cruz fumbled the football after a short catch at midfield, and the loose ball was returned 50 yards for a touchdown by S Jeff Heath of the Cowboys. Dallas 7 – New York 0.

On New York’s fourth possession, the Giants drove the ball 74 yards in 10 plays, but were forced to settle for a 21-yard field goal after facing a 1st-and-goal situation at the 9-yard line. The Cowboys responded with a 5-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Romo to TE Jason Witten. Cowboys 14 – Giants 3.

The Giants’ offense moved the football well again, driving 65 yards in eight plays. But again, the drive stalled in the red zone. After facing a 1st-and-goal from the 4-yard line, the Giants had to settle for yet another short field goal, this time from 23 yards out.

Neither team threatened in the last four possessions of the second quarter. At the half, Dallas led 14-6.

New York received the football to start the second half and drove from their own 34-yard line to the Dallas 35. However, QB Eli Manning’s pass to Cruz on 4th-and-6 ended the drive and the Giants turned the football over on downs. Dallas then took a commanding lead by drive 65 yards in 10 plays as Romo hit Witten again, this time from two yards out. Midway through the third quarter, the Cowboys led 21-6. That drive was kept alive when a roughing-the-passer penalty on DE Mathias Kiwanuka erased a fumble that was forced by CB Terrell Thomas and recovered by S Will Hill.

The Giants immediately cut into that 15-point advantage by driving 67 yards in six plays. On 4th-and-3 from the Cowboys’ 27-yard line, Manning for TE Brandon Myers for the score. Cowboys 21 – Giants 13.

On the Cowboys’ second possession of the half, they were forced to punt the ball away after crossing midfield near the end of the third quarter. The Giants then went three-and-out, the Cowboys punted after gaining one first down, the Giants went three-and-out again, and Dallas punted the ball away again.

With just under nine minutes to play, and trailing by eight points, New York drove 58 yards in eight plays, with Manning finding WR Louis Murphy for a 4-yard touchdown with just under five minutes to go. RB Andre Brown scored on the 2-point conversion and the game was tied at 21-21.

However, the dramatic comeback was ruined when the Cowboys ended the game with a 14-play, 64-yard drive that ended with a walk-off 35-yard field goal by Dallas with no time left on the clock. The Cowboys converted on three third-down situations on the drive.

Offensively, Manning finished the game 16-of-30 for 174 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. His leading receivers were RB Andre Brown (4 catches for 11 yards), WR Rueben Randle (3 catches for 64 yards), and TE Brandon Myers (three catches for 39 yards and a touchdown). The Giants rushed for 202 yards. Brown carried the ball 21 times for 127 yards and RB Brandon Jacobs carried the ball nine times for 75 yards.

Defensively, the Giants allowed 220 net yards passing and 107 net yards rushing. The Giants sacked Romo four times with sacks by DT Cullen Jenkins (twice), DE Justin Tuck (once), and a shared sack by DT Linval Joseph and DE Mathias Kiwanuka. The only forced turnover was Rolle’s interception.

Video highlights/lowlights are available at NFL.com.

Post-Game Injury Report: OC Jim Cordle injured his knee and left the game in the first half. It is not believed to be an ACL tear, but he will undergo an MRI exam. CB Trumaine McBride was forced to leave the game with a groin injury. DE Jason Pierre-Paul had x-rays taken on his injured shoulder after the game.

Both teams were flagged 11 time.

Dallas was 4-of-11 on third down, but three of those conversions came on their game-winning field goal drive.
