DARIAN THOMPSON “WEEK TO WEEK” WITH SHOULDER INJURY…
The New York Giants announced on Monday that rookie safety Darian Thompson, who was the clear-cut favorite to win the starting free safety job, injured his shoulder during the 21-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. Thompson will be evaluated on a “week to week” basis according to the team.

In addition, tight end Matt LaCosse also injured his knee and will be evaluated on a “day to day” basis.

GIANTS SIGN PLACE KICKER RANDY BULLOCK…
The New York Giants have signed free agent place kicker Randy Bullock. To make room for Bulluck, the team waived place kicker Tom Obarski.

Bullock was originally drafted in the 5th round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He played in 35 consecutive regular-season games for the Texans until he was released in late September 2015. Bulluck then served as the New York Jets place kicker for eight games in 2015. Overall, Bullock is an 80.6 percent field goal kicker with 47.4 percent of his kickoffs resulting in touchbacks. In 2015, Bullock made 19-of-23 field goal attempts (82.6 percent).

The Giants signed Obarski to a reserve/future contract in January 2016. Obarski was originally signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2015 NFL Draft, but he did not make the team. Obarski missed a 27-yard field goal on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills.

Josh Brown has been suspended for one regular-season game without pay for violating the NFL Personal Conduct Policy (domestic violence incident in 2015). Brown will miss the opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

NEW YORK GIANTS MINI-CAMP ENDS…
The New York Giants held their third and final practice of their 3-day, voluntary mini-camp on Thursday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. However, there was no media access to the practice, Head Coach Ben McAdoo, or the players.

INJURY UPDATE ON WR BEN EDWARDS…
The Bergen Record reports that the injury suffered by wide receiver Ben Edwards during mini-camp drills on Wednesday is not believed to be serious. The paper says Edwards’ injury has been diagnosed as a mild left knee sprain. He is expected to resume offseason workouts.

Edwards was eligible to play in the NFL in 2014, but sat out the year recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injury. The Giants originally signed Edwards after the 2015 NFL Draft, but waived/injured him in July after he pulled his hamstring during the June mini-camp. The Giants re-signed him to the Practice Squad in November 2015 and then signed Edwards to the 53-man roster in December 2015. He played in the final two games and finished the season with one catch for nine yards.

Edwards lacks ideal size and timed speed, but he is a quick receiver who plays faster than he times. Edwards runs very good routes, adjusts well to the football, and has good hands. He has experience playing in the slot and returning punts.

APRIL 27, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS MINI-CAMP REPORT…
The second day of the New York Giants 3-day, voluntary mini-camp was held on Wednesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. There will be no media access on the third and final day of the mini-camp on Thursday.

On-field workouts allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted. Players will wear helmets, but no shoulder pads.

“Second day back on the field, had a chance to work on the fundamentals a little bit, do some team periods, get a little offense and defensive action and we have a lot of work to do, but we are excited for the process,” said Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo.

INJURY REPORT AND ABSENTEES…
Wide receiver Ben Edwards was carted off of the field after reportedly suffering an injury to his left knee. He appeared to be in a lot of pain. No word yet on the severity of the injury.

Several players are still recovering from injuries suffered last year and are slowly being brought along. Wide receiver Victor Cruz (calf) was kept out of drills and spent time with the trainers.

“We threw routes the past couple of weeks and he seemed good,” said quarterback Eli Manning of Cruz. “He was running routes. He seemed sharp and he was able to come out of breaks. He looked the same. Hopefully he can get back out here soon.”

Defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins (pectoral), linebacker Devon Kennard (foot) and safety Bennett Jackson (knee) were spotted working on the sidelines.

NJ.com reports that running back Orleans Darkwa (leg) has a small fracture in his tibia and is expected to be held out of football activities for about a month.

PRACTICE NOTES…
Some snippets from various media sources:

  • NJ.com reports that once again, John Jerry was the starting right guard and Marshall Newhouse the starting right tackle. Bobby Hart was at right tackle and Sean McDermott at center with the second unit. Brett Jones was the third-team center.
  • In a three-wide receiver set, Odell Beckham and Myles White started outside with Dwayne Harris in the slot.
  • Trevin Wade lined up at slot cornerback.
  • Newsday reports that wide receiver Anthony Dablé looked more comfortable today and that his skill set is obvious.
  • Wide receiver Myles White beat cornerback Janoris Jenkins on a dig route.
  • Wide receiver Geremy Davis made a long, jumping touchdown catch on a pass from Ryan Nassib.
  • Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie picked off a pass from quarterback Ryan Nassib, but Rodgers-Cromartie was then beat for a touchdown by wide receiver Odell Beckham on a stop-and-go route.

NEW YORK GIANTS SIGN WILL JOHNSON…
ESPN reports that the New York Giants are signing unrestricted free agent H-Back/fullback Will Johnson (Pittsburgh Steelers) to a 2-year contract.

The 27-year old, 6’2”, 240-pound Johnson was not drafted and signed with the Steelers in 2012. In four seasons with the Steelers, Johnson only missed one regular-season game, and started 20 contests. He has 31 career receptions for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson is versatile with the ability to play H-Back, tight end, and fullback. He is a good lead blocker who can also catch the football. Johnson is a solid special teams player.

Johnson will likely compete with Nikita Whitlock for the team’s sole fullback spot.

HARRY HULMES PASSES AWAY…
Harry Hulmes III, who served in various roles with the New York Giants for 25 years, has passed away at the age of 88.

Hulmes joined the Giants in 1984 as an assistant to then-General Manager George Young. Hulmes later became the special assistant to the general manager until 1998. From 1998 to 2008, Hulmes served as a scout for the team.

“Harry was an instrumental part of our success under George Young,” said team President and CEO John Mara. “While he may have operated behind the scenes, he was an invaluable member of our front office and was George’s right hand man for many years. He was beloved by everyone at the Giants and around the NFL. It is s very sad day for all of us.”

“Harry was one of the true gentlemen in the NFL,” said General Manager Jerry Reese. “I loved hearing him read his very detailed game day scouting reports on players. Some of them would start like this, ‘It was a brisk, sunny fall afternoon and the wind was blowing out of the northeast at 10 miles-per-hour. Nonetheless, the stadium was packed, and both teams seemed ready to go.'”

Henry Hynoski, New York Giants (December 30, 2012)

[contentblock id=1 img=html.png]

The New York Giants made 22 roster moves on Saturday in order reduce the roster to 53 players as required by the NFL.

The Giants waived or terminated the contracts of the following players:

  • QB Ricky Stanzi
  • RB Kenneth Harper
  • FB Henry Hynoski
  • WR James Jones
  • WR Corey Washington (waived/injured)
  • WR Julian Talley
  • TE Adrien Robinson
  • OT Emmett Cleary
  • OT Sean Donnelly
  • OG Adam Gettis
  • DE Brad Bars
  • DT Dominique Hamilton
  • LB Jameel McClain
  • LB Ashlee Palmer
  • LB Cole Farrand
  • CB Chykie Brown
  • CB Chandler Fenner
  • S Jeromy Miles
  • S C.J. Conway
  • PK Chris Boswell

The Giants placed the following players on season-ending Injured Reserve:

  • S Nat Berhe (calf)
  • OC Brett Jones (knee)

“(Cut down days are) all the same, because inevitably there are guys, I don’t give a damn who you are, you become attached to them,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “They’re part of your landscape. To have some of these guys that have been here, and been through some of the really good times, to have them go, it’s not easy. Because you have something you shared. You shared it, and it was great. And it’ll be there for a lifetime. Especially as gracious as some of these young men are and the things that they say. I mean they’re in here almost in tears, and you’re sitting there thinking that this is just going to be one of those hard days. All of a sudden, they start touching the emotional part of it, and it’s not easy.”

The Giants have 16 players on their 53-man roster (30.2 percent) who were not here or did not play a game for the team in 2014.

“It’s what you see throughout the league,” Coughlin said. “I think that sometimes, to be honest with you, that number and that percentage is a good thing. Because you do need the constant (roster turnover). It happens naturally, but it’s a constant as you try and improve. You wouldn’t think that a team who won six games would stay where they are. Well, they’re not. You have to try another direction.”

Three lesser-known players who surprised included tight end Jerome Cunningham, linebacker Unai’ Unga, and fullback Nikita Whitlock.

“Without a doubt, they flashed,” Coughlin said. “They flashed and they followed through. It’s not all the finished product by any means, but they are young and they do play hard. There hasn’t been many big plays the whole (preseason), but Cunningham has made a couple of them, outstanding catches. Geremy Davis has made plays. He’s a special teamer. He’s out there on the practice field every day. He’s out there. Be out there on the practice field. Maybe we can make some progress if you’re out there. It’s hard to make progress when you’re not.”

“What’d (Whitlock) make, two or three tackles on special teams the other night,” said Coughlin. “That’s the thing. He’s a four-core special teamer (playing on the punt and punt return, kickoff and kickoff return teams). He’s had them all, and knows full well why he’s here.”

“You definitely do see the potential (in Unga),” Coughlin said. “He can run, he’s physical, he’s got some skill. He’s got a deep skill level. He’s got a lot to learn about the position.”

Hynoski has been the starting fullback for the Giants for the last four seasons. McClain started 14 games for the Giants at middle linebacker in 2014. Robinson was was a former draft pick (2012 4th round).

“Everybody loves Henry,” Coughlin said. “Henry is a very positive young man. He’s upbeat. He always has and always will do whatever you want him to do. He’s had a couple of years where he’s had some injury issues. But by in large, he’s out there every day. You get to appreciate those kind of guys.”

“Another one that was tough (was McClain),” Coughlin said. “He’s obviously a recent addition here. But he’s always been a very upbeat and positive guy, and always looking for the bright side of everything. He is verbal, and is loud. But you come to realize that he’s doing it for a reason. He is positive about the impression he makes on people. He’ll take charge of the huddle for you, there’s no doubt about that.”

Because of these moves, we have updated the Transactions, Roster, and Depth Chart sections of the website.

Notes and Quotes: With the release of punter Steve Weatherford and and fullback Henry Hynoski, the Giants have just seven players remaining from the 2011 Super Bowl XLVI championship team: QB Eli Manning, WR Victor Cruz, OT Will Beatty, DE Jason Pierre-Paul, LB Mark Herzlich, CB Prince Amukamara, and LS Zak DeOssie.

Coughlin on new punter Brad Wing: “Left-footed, hang, distance, and location. Impressive grades coming out (of LSU). Punted for a season and had the kind of things that we would like to be able to do in terms of directional punting and all that stuff.”

The Giants say Wing will also be the holder for Josh Brown’s field goal and extra point attempts.

[contentblock id=1 img=html.png]

The New York Giants have most likely lost yet another safety for the season. Second-year defensive back Nat Berhe will undergo surgery on his calf on Friday to remove a blood clot. The surgery is expected to land Berhe on season-ending Injured Reserve, although there is a chance he could be placed on short-term Injured Reserve. The Giants have already lost safeties Mykkele Thompson (torn Achilles’ tendon), Bennett Jackson (torn ACL), and Justine Currie (fractured ankle and leg) for the year.

Berhe originally injured his calf in May while running. He missed most of the spring practices and almost all of training camp. Berhe returned to practice on Tuesday but re-aggravating the injury and missed practice on Wednesday.

The only safeties now on the roster include Landon Collins, Cooper Taylor, Jeromy Miles, Brandon Meriweather, Justin Halley, and C.J. Conway. Both Collins (knee) and Taylor (toe) have themselves missed valuable time due to injuries. Veteran journeymen Miles and Meriweather have been starting at safety in practice this week. Halley and Conway are rookie free agent long shots who were signed after injuries began hitting the safety position.
