New York Giants Rookie Free Agents – Six Reportedly Signed: According to various sources, the Giants have reportedly signed the following six undrafted rookie free agents.  However, these signings are not official and often times an undrafted rookie free agent is merely invited to the rookie mini-camp and then not signed.  Once any signings in fact become official, we will prepare scouting reports on those players.

  • DE Maurice Evans (Penn State)
  • DE Alex Field (Virginia)
  • DT Dwayne  Hendricks (Miami)
  • LB/S Kenny Ingram (Florida State)
  • S Sha’reff Rashad (Central Florida)
  • CB Vince Anderson (Webber International)

Two who have reportedly been invited to attend the Giants’ rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis include TE Darius Hill (Ball State) and DE Kenny Mainor (Troy). There are conflicting reports on S Otis Wiley (Michigan State). Some have said he has signed with the Giants, others say the Lions.

Report – Contract Demands of Edwards and Boldin Prohibitive: Newsday is reporting that more so than the compensation that the Giants would have to pay the Browns for WR Braylon Edwards and Cardinals for WR Anquan Boldin, it is the contract demands of both those players that are discouraging the Giants from making a deal. Both players are said to be seeking $10 million per year contracts.

Meanwhile, 1050 ESPN Radio reported yesterday that an unidentifed source close to Edwards said the Giants were “out of the running” for Edwards’ services.

Another Report Says Giants Targeting Darrius Heyward-Bey: Like The Daily News yesterday, Newsday is reporting that the Giants are targeting WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (University of Maryland) in the first round.

The Daily News continues to say the Giants will attempt to trade up to select Heyward-Bey.  If not, they will stay at #29 and select WR Hakeem Nicks (University of North Carolina).

New York Giants Targeting WR Darrius Heyward-Bey?: According to The Daily News, “two sources familiar with the team’s plans” have informed the paper that the Giants are interested in trading up in the first round in order to draft WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (University of Maryland).

Of course, The Daily News reported yesterday that the Giants were targeting WR Hakeem Nicks (University of North Carolina) in the first round, so we’ll see. There may be more smoke than substance to these reports.

“Sources” Continue to Say Edwards-to-Giants Trade Unlikely or Dead: According to various media reports, the once expected trade between the Giants and Browns for WR Braylon Edwards is not likely or will not happen. Whether this is true or posturing by the two sides should be answered shortly.

Newsday is reporting that an unidentified team source has in fact said the talks are dead. “We are nowhere,” said the source regarding trade talks. “At this point we are looking at the draft.” Newsday and The New York Post also report that the Giants and Browns have not been in much contact with each other since the NFL Combine in February. But Newsday then goes on to suggest that what is being said by “sources” may not necessarily be true and might be misdirection by the teams involved and the agent for Edwards (Edwards is seeking a new contract). Regardless, all press reports indicate a trade is unlikely at this point.

Report – New York Giants Trade for Braylon Edwards Unlikely: The Daily News is reporting that the Giants are unlikely to acquire WR Braylon Edwards of the Cleveland Browns by trade. An unidentified source has told the paper that the Browns are seeking the Giants’ 1st and 3rd round picks in this weekend’s NFL Draft. The Giants are apparently offering their 2nd and 5th round picks. So unless one side blinks, there will be no trade.

A report on ESPN yesterday said the Browns were seeking the Giants’ 1st round pick and DE Mathias Kiwanuka.

The Daily News report also says the Giants are alos not expected to attempt to trade for WR Anquan Boldin of the Arizona Cardinals.

Giants Interested in Moving Up in the Draft? According to The Daily News‘ Giants Blog, several unidentified team sources have said the Giants are interested in moving up in the 1st round of the Draft.

Giants Claim Offensive Tackle Off of Waivers: The Giants claimed OT Andrew Carnahan off of waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday. Carnahan was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent that season and part of 2008 on the Jaguars’ Practice Squad. The Chiefs signed him to their 53-man roster in October 2008.

Article on the Giants’ WR Position: Wide-Open Debate: Whether It’s Boldin or Braylon, Big Blue Has Giant Decision by Gary Myers of The Daily News

Notes and Quotes: According to The Bergen Record, the Giants’ first training camp practice in Albany, New York will be on August 3rd (players actually report on August 2nd).

QB Eli Manning on upgrading the wide receiver position: “I think Jerry Reese and the coaches and the owners, they’ve been studying all the receivers, whether it’s rookie receivers in the draft or free agents who are available and what might happen. So I think they’re on top of it. They know we have some good receivers here, some young guys who can play football for us, but that we might need a No. 1 receiver. So I think that’s what they’re going to look for right now and I’m sure something will happen either during the draft or before the draft or right near it to help us out.”

Manning on WR Braylon Edwards of the Cleveland Browns: “You just see him make big plays. I know last year maybe wasn’t his best year, but two years ago, he scored a lot of touchdowns. And I think you want a guy who can catch the ball and make big plays and get in the end zone.”
