DOMINIQUE RODGERS-CROMARTIE REINSTATED, MICHAEL HUNTER CUT…
The New York Giants have reinstated cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who was suspended without pay by the team last Thursday for violating team rules. According to media reports, Rodgers-Cromartie was in trouble for leaving a team recovery session on October 6th, the sidelines during the Giants-Chargers game on October 8th, and the team facility on October 10th – all without permission. The Giants released a statement that said Head Coach Ben McAdoo spoke with Rodgers-Cromartie today before he was reinstated.

To make room for Rodgers-Cromartie on the 53-man roster, the Giants waived/injured cornerback Michael Hunter, who injured his hamstring during the Giants-Broncos game on Sunday night. The Giants originally signed Hunter as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2016 NFL Draft. Hunter spent time on both the Practice Squad and 53-man roster in 2016.

NOTES…
Last Sunday against the Denver Broncos, Roger Lewis, Jr. and Tavarres King were the only Giants wide receivers to catch a pass – and they had one reception apiece. It was the first time no Giants wide receiver had more than one catch since December 24, 2006, when Plaxico Burress, Tim Carter, and Sinorice Moss each had one in a 30-7 loss to New Orleans (when the Giants had 59 net passing yards).

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the victory in Denver was the first Giants game in which their wide receivers totaled no more than two catches since September 22, 1991, when Mark Ingram and Odessa Turner each had one catch in a 13-10 victory against Cleveland.

Since the 1970 merger, the Giants are 18-2-1 when their opponents throws 50 or more passes.

The game in Denver was quarterback Eli Manning’s 50th start in October. The Giants are 36-14 (.720) in those games.

On Sunday, the Giants wore a “14” sticker on their helmet in honor of Hall of Fame quarterback and Giants record-holder Y.A. Tittle, who passed away last week. The sticker will remain on their helmets for the remainder of the season.

MONDAY BEN MCADOO CONFERENCE CALL…
New York Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo addressed the media by conference call on Monday to discuss the team’s 23-10 win over the Denver Broncos:

McAdoo: I thought we played hard-nosed, physical, heavy-handed football. Seeing it in practice all year – it was encouraging to see it carry over to game day. That was a formula going into the ballgame and give credit to the players and the coaches for bringing it to life. Defensively – it started with stopping the run. Gave up, I believe it was 46 yards, created turnovers and had a score on defense. Held them to 10 points and situationally, we played very well. Whether it was third down or red zone or goal line. It’s the type of effort we talked about going in and it was great to see. Offensively – we started fast. Scored points on the first possession. Thought we played physical and delivered physical body blows in the run game. Had 148 yards rushing. Coming out in four-minute situations were huge in the ballgame for us and we came through and we hit our explosive target with percentage of plays and took care of the Duke, which certainly helps winning the turnover battle. Special teams – thought we showed it was important to us as an entire team. The punt team played with great effort. We knew they had a dynamic returner. I think one play was about 24 seconds in length. They got about a 7-yard return on it. But, it showed tremendous, tremendous effort and energy there. We fielded the ball well with our new returners and made good decisions. Our hands team came through at the end of the ballgame, that’s a very physical play. They did a nice job on the kick and Roger Lewis did a good job fielding it, but we were physical on our blocks there giving him an opportunity to field the ball. Kerry Wynn had a field goal block with an assist by (Curtis) Grant, who did a nice job and was physical there and Aldrick (Rosas) had a strong gator roll tackle at the end of the ball game. With that, we’ll open it up.

Q: With the personnel that you have now without the wide receivers, are these the types of games you have to win, running the ball?

A: Each game, each opponent, provides a new challenge and a new week. So, it just depends on how the week goes and what we think we have to do to give us the best chance to win the ballgame.

Q: Can you talk about the offensive lineman who have had to shuffle positions throughout the season, specifically G John Jerry and G Justin Pugh?

A: Yeah. John and Justin – they’re two pros. They’re two guys that the team is the most important thing to them and they’ll do whatever is asked of them and it doesn’t take a big sit-down for it to take place. It doesn’t take an act of Congress for it to get done. They’re willing to jump out and play a new position if it’s for the best of the team, if it gives us the best chance to win a ballgame and they put their head down, they go to work and it’s much appreciated by the head coach.

Q: How do you think the offensive line group did as a whole?

A: I thought they played hard. I thought they played physical. I thought that the defense we went up against last night is one of the better defenses – one of the best defenses in this league and playing them on the road on grass is a tremendous challenge and I thought our guys fought hard. The run blocking unit and the backs ran hard, including the tight ends, but the offensive line, they battled.

Q: How much will it benefit to keep the offensive line unit together?

A: Again, each week provides a new challenge, a new opportunity and we’ll take a look at what we need to do this week to give us the best chance to win the ballgame. I like the group that played yesterday, though.

Q: Can you talk about the communication and the challenge that the offensive line has had given the different combinations that you’ve had to use?

A: Yeah. It’s certainly a challenge when there are moving parts up front. It makes the game a little bit smoother when you have guys who always work next to each other, but that’s not the case in today’s NFL. There are moving parts in there and I think when you have a center like Jonesy (Brett Jones) who goes in and does a nice job communicating and gets everybody on the same page, I think it really helps the guards out and they echo it out to the tackles and we did a nice job with that yesterday.

Q: Do coaches need to be rewarded in the sense that seeing their work is having a good effect?

A: Yeah – that’s a great question. I think every day coming to work here is a great opportunity. This is a class organization. I enjoy coming to work here every day with this locker room. We have a great locker room full of players and all they want to do is win. They’re not selfish in nature. They’re a team-first outfit downstairs. It’s great to get the first one. Now, we have to start stacking them. But, this is pro sports. Not everybody gets a ribbon.

Q: In regards to your reasoning for giving up play calling for yesterday’s game because the entire team needed you last week, doesn’t the entire team need its head coach every week?

A: I felt with the things that were taking place last week, that I needed to delegate play calling duty to Sully (Offensive Coordinator Mike Sullivan). I think he did a tremendous job sticking to the plan during the ballgame and sticking with the run and putting us in position to win the ballgame. And I felt like during the course of the week, I need to make sure that I was here for the entire football team and this organization anyway that I could be. We talk about doing what’s best for the team, and what was best for the team last week was for me to give up play calling duties. And yes, the head coach needs to be available for his team each and every week.

Q: How much did you find yourself having more time to deal with other things during the game, since you weren’t calling plays?

A: I think what can happen sometimes is, when you call plays your mentality may be a little bit different. Your personality may be a little bit different. So, I felt my personality came out a little bit more last night than maybe it normally has. I was still involved with the offense. I had a chance to buzz around and be around all the players, let my energy come out a little bit more maybe than I have in the past, but that’s part of it.

Q: Are you going to stick with having Sullivan call the plays?

A: Yeah, I’m never going to jump on here and tell you who’s playing where and who’s calling the plays. But you can write about what you want.

Q: Where do things stand right now with cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie?

A: I’ll visit with DRC a little bit later in the week and we’ll sit down and have a conversation and see where we are.

Q: Do you expect Rodgers-Cromartie to return to the team this week?

A: That’s all I have for you.

Q: Will your conversation with Rodgers-Cromartie be tomorrow?

A: I gave you my line. That’s all I have for you.

Q: Why would you share the details of the Rodgers-Cromartie situation with NBC?

A: I said everything I needed to say on the DRC front.

Q: How did you come through the game, injury-wise?

A: (Linebacker) Calvin (Munson) is a little banged up with a quad, (cornerback) Michael Hunter is sore with a hamstring and that’s where we sit right now.

Q: Was special teams being important to the locker room a concern for you coming into yesterday’s game?

A: I just wanted to see the effort that I saw last night show up in our coverage teams. And I thought we played with tremendous effort last night.

Q: What took so long to give running back Orleans Darkwa such a prominent role in the offense?

A: I think when you go back to 2014 and he emerged onto the scene, he did some nice things for us in the run game. I remember back to St. Louis, he popped a nice run and we tried to get him going a little bit in 2015, it was just a challenge to get it going there. I feel he’s a very natural runner and he’s been taking advantage of his opportunities this year.

Q: When you spoke to the team last week, did you mention all of the players that you lost to injury?

A: I did not. I don’t like to talk about injuries, really, in front of the team. But earlier in the week, we did mention that specifically on offense, teams probably aren’t going to fear and think we could put points on the board the way that we’re going to need to put points on the board and I challenged the offense that way and they responded in a good way.

Q: Do you expect to have any of the players that were injured and inactive against Denver to be back this week?

A: They weren’t good to go yesterday, it’s early in the week right now. So, we’ll have to see. We’ll have some guys that will probably give individual [drills] a shot on Wednesday and see where we are on Wednesday with the speed reps. But Thursday will be a good tell.

NOTES…
The Giants led at halftime against the Broncos, 17-3, their largest lead after two quarters since December 7, 2014.

The Giants forced three Denver turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble) and did not commit a turnover. It was the first time this season they had a positive turnover differential.

The Giants improved to 11-7 since 1990 when their opponents are coming off a bye and the Giants are not.

Eli Manning played in his 207th regular-season game, tying former tight end Howard Cross for second on the Giants’ career list. Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan is first with 216 games played.

Manning started his 205th consecutive game. He is three shying of tying his brother Peyton for the second longest starting streak in history by a quarterback.

Manning completed 11-of-19 passes for 128 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. The 19 attempts were his lowest total in a full regular-season game since he threw 15 passes at Buffalo on December 23, 2007. Manning’s 11 completions was his lowest total in a full game since November 4, 2012, when he had 10 (on 24 attempts) vs. Pittsburgh. Manning’s 128 yards in Denver was his lowest total in a game in which he took every snap since he had 125 in that game vs. the Steelers five years ago.

Orleans Darkwa’s 47-yarder was the longest run by a Giants back since December 7, 2014, when Andre Williams scored on a 50-yard run in a victory at Tennessee. The Giants’ longest run in 2016 was a 25-yarder by Rashad Jennings vs. Cincinnati on November 14, and in 2015 it was a 39-yarder by Shane Vereen vs. Dallas on October 25.

Cornerback Janoris Jenkins scored his eighth career touchdown, and his sixth on an interception. He has also scored on returns after a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal.

The Giants-Broncos regular-season series is tied, 6-6. The Giants improved to 2-4 in Denver. They also won here in 1989.

The Giants improved to 22-29-1 on Sunday Night Football, including 11-17-1 on the road.

NEW YORK GIANTS 23 – DENVER BRONCOS 10…
Missing a plethora of injured players, the underdog New York Giants soundly defeated the Denver Broncos 23-10 on Sunday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado. The victory was the team’s first on the season, as New York is now 1-5 overall.

Denver actually substantially out-gained the Giants in first downs (20 to 12), total net yards (412 to 266), and net passing yards (366 to 118). But the Giants out-rushed the Broncos 148 to 46 and the Giants won the all-important turnover battle 3 to 0. New York’s defense also forced two turnovers on downs. Coming into the game, Denver had been averaging 143 rushing yards per contest. And the Giants were able to move the ball on the ground against what had been the NFL’s #1 defense.

It was announced before the game that Offensive Coordinator Mike Sullivan would be taking over play-calling duties from Head Coach Ben McAdoo. The Giants also reconfigured their offensive line as follows: left tackle Ereck Flowers, left guard John Jerry, center Brett Jones, right guard D.J. Fluker, and right tackle Justin Pugh.

After the Giants’ defense forced a three-and-out to start the game, New York set the tone with a 7-minute, 13-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal by place kicker Aldrick Rosas. Both teams then exchanged three-and-outs. Denver had a chance to tie the game on their third possession, but missed a 35-yard field after a 6-play, 41-yard drive. Sparked by a 15-yard catch by wide receiver Roger Lewis on 3rd-and-10 and 47-yard run by running back Orleans Darkwa, the Giants went up 10-0 early in the second quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eli Manning to tight end Evan Engram on 3rd-and-2.

The Broncos responded with a drive into New York territory, but safety Landon Collins picked off quarterback Trevor Siemian’s pass at the 14 yard line and returned it 21 yards. After a three-and-out by the Giants, Denver managed their first scoring drive with a 9-play, 70-yard possession that resulted in a 28-yard field goal. Giants 10 – Broncos 3.

The Giants went three-and-out again and Denver got the ball back with 2:32 left before halftime. But on 3rd-and-10 from the Denver 38-yard line, Siemian’s pass was intercepted by cornerback Janoris Jenkins and returned 43 yards for a touchdown to give the Giants a 17-3 halftime advantage.

After both teams exchanged punts to start the third quarter, the Giants expanded their lead to 20-3 with Rosas’ 51-yard field goal after the offense gained 30 yards on six plays. Denver’s attempt to cut into this lead on their ensuing possession failed when their 53-yard field goal was blocked by defensive end Kerry Wynn. The Broncos immediately reciprocated as Rosas’ 49-yard field goal was partially blocked.

Still trailing 20-3, a desperate Broncos team went for it on 4th-and-5 at the start of the 4th quarter. The Broncos completed the pass for six yards and the first down, but Jenkins forced a fumble on the play that was recovered by fellow cornerback Eli Apple at the Giants’ 39-yard line. The Giants then went three-and-out for the fourth time in the game. Denver seriously threatened with an 11-play, 84-yard drive. But on 4th-and-goal from the NYG 1-yard line, defensive end Avery Moss stopped the running back for no gain with 8:23 to go in the game.

After a 15-yard run by Darkwa, the Giants were forced to punt again with just over six minutes to play. Unfortunately, the defense too quickly allowed Denver to score their lone touchdown of the night, moving 58 yards in seven plays and two minutes. The Giants recovered the onside kick at the Denver 41-yard line with four minutes to go. On 3rd-and-9, Darkwa gained 19 yards – enough to set up Rosas for a 40-yard field goal with half a minute to go for the final points of the game.

Offensively, Manning only completed 11-of-19 passes for 128 yards, 1 touchdown, and 0 interceptions. His leading receiver was Engram, who caught 5 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. Darkwa rushed 21 times for 117 yards.

Defensively, Jenkins scored on his interception and also forced a fumble that was recovered by Apple (who also was credited with three pass defenses). Collins also had a pick. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul led the team with 8 tackles, three tackles for losses, and three sacks. Defensive tackle Damon Harrison also had a sack. The Giants were credited overall with 11 pass defenses.

DOMINIQUE RODGERS-CROMARTIE SUSPENDED “INDEFINITELY”; DONTE DEAYON PROMOTED…
Following up on yesterday’s story of cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (DRC) being suspended by the New York Giants, the team has announced that Rodgers-Cromartie will be suspended without pay “indefinitely” for “violation of team rules.” DRC met with Head Coach Ben McAdoo on Thursday, was informed of his suspension, and was officially placed on the Reserve/Suspended List.

“It was a private conversation that will remain private,” said McAdoo.

Under the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), Rodgers-Cromartie can only be suspended up to four games. DRC will lose $410,588 per week that he is suspended. Suspended players must stay away from team facilities during the suspension.

According to media reports, Rodgers-Cromartie is in hot water for leaving last Friday’s team recovery session, the sidelines during Sunday’s Giants-Chargers game, and the team facility on Tuesday – all without permission.

To fill DRC’s roster spot, the Giants signed cornerback Donte Deayon from the team’s Practice Squad. The team also signed cornerback Brandon Dixon to the Practice Squad.

The Giants originally signed Deayon as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2016 NFL Draft. He was added to the Practice Squad in September 2016 and placed on the Practice Squad/Injured Reserve in October 2016 with an unknown injury.

Dixon was originally drafted in the 6th round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. The 5’11”, 203-pound Dixon has spent time with the Jets (2014), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014), Seattle Seahawks (2015), Indianapolis Colts (2015), New England Patriots (2015), New Orleans Saints (2015-2016), and Pittsburgh Steelers (2016-2017). Despite his travels around the NFL, Dixon has only played in 14 games with no starts with the Buccaneers in 2014. Originally regarded as a small-school developmental prospect, Dixon has a nice combination of size and overall athletic ability.

INJURY UPDATE…
Running back Paul Perkins (ribs), wide receiver Sterling Shepard (ankle), center Weston Richburg (concussion), defensive end Olivier Vernon (ankle), linebacker Jonathan Casillas (neck), and safety Landon Collins (ankle) did not practice on Thursday.

GIANTS SUSPEND DOMINIQUE RODGERS-CROMARTIE AFTER HE LEAVES TEAM…
In a bizarre turn of events, New York Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo announced on Wednesday that cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (DRC) has left the team and will be suspended by the Giants.

“DRC came in yesterday,” said McAdoo. “We had a conversation that was personal upstairs and he came in today. Decided to leave. We will suspend him.”

When asked, McAdoo would not answer how long the suspension would last.

Rodgers-Cromartie told ESPN that he and McAdoo had an argument on the sidelines during the Giants-Chargers game last Sunday when the team decided to pull him out of the game. The argument apparently continued on Wednesday. “I handled it the wrong way, but to sit me a game had me hot so I left,” Rodgers-Cromartie told ESPN. “I was suspended way before I left. I left because I felt what (McAdoo) said was BS.’’

ESPN is reporting that Rodgers-Cromartie walked out of last Friday’s “recovery day” session. In addition, according to multiple press reports, the Giants were upset that DRC left the bench area and went to the locker room during the second-half of the Giants-Chargers game, although he later returned. ESPN is reporting that the incidents on Friday and Sunday led to a meeting on Tuesday where McAdoo informed DRC that he would be inactive on Sunday night against the Denver Broncos and fined. ESPN says DRC cleaned out his locker and left team facilities on Wednesday.

Rodgers-Cromartie told ESPN that he would return to the team on Thursday.

INJURY UPDATE…
Running back Paul Perkins (ribs), wide receiver Sterling Shepard (ankle), center Weston Richburg (concussion), defensive end Olivier Vernon (ankle), linebacker Jonathan Casillas (neck), and safety Landon Collins (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday. NEW YORK GIANTS ROSTER MOVES…
The New York Giants have placed wide receivers Odell Beckham, Jr. (fractured ankle) and Dwayne Harris (fractured foot) on Injured Reserve. To fill those vacant roster spots, the Giants signed wide receiver Travis Rudolph from the Practice Squad and re-signed wide receiver Tavarres King, who the team waived last month.

The Giants also signed wide receiver Darius Powe to the Practice Squad.

Rudolph was originally signed by the Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2017 NFL Draft.

King was originally drafted in the 5th round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. He spent time with the Broncos (2013), Panthers (2013-14), Jaguars (2014), and Buccaneers (2014-15). The Giants signed King to the Practice Squad in late September 2015. He played in seven regular season games in 2016 and the playoff game. The Giants waived him on September 18, 2017.

The Giants originally signed Powe as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2016 NFL Draft and he spent the 2016 season on the team’s Practice Squad. He was waived/injured in August 2017 with a hamstring injury.

INJURY UPDATE…
The Giants announced that wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. will have surgery this week to repair his fractured ankle and that wide receiver Dwayne Harris will have surgery on Tuesday to repair his fractured foot (5th metatarsal).

In addition, wide receiver Brandon Marshall is undergoing further testing and examination today on his ankle. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard is day-to-day with a sprained ankle. Linebacker Jonathan Casillas (burner) and safety Landon Collins (sprained ankle) are both day-to-day.

MONDAY BEN MCADOO CONFERENCE CALL…
New York Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo addressed the media by conference call on Monday to discuss the team’s 27-22 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers:

McAdoo: Let’s start with yesterday’s ballgame. Defensively, I thought we played well at times, especially early in the ballgame. We had five three and outs in the first half. We had a safety and an INT in the red zone. What we need to work on, our tackling improved, but we’re not where we want to be just yet. And getting off the field in the second half.

Offensively, we started faster than we had previously, but we did leave some points off the board. Got the running game going and everyone had a hand in it. Whether it was o-line, tight ends, the backs ran hard. I thought the perimeter blocked well and the quarterback kept us in the good looks. We overcame injuries in the second half and put a couple touchdowns on the board with only two healthy receivers out there available to us. What we need to work on, we have to get our pass protection back on track. We have to take care of The Duke better and we have to eliminate the penalties that cost us.

Special teams, I thought PAT/field goal block we had some good, hard rushes out there. In the punt game, our plus area downing was a positive. Two inside the five, one in the ten, one inside the 15. In our punt return, our perimeter blocking improved, took a step there. Averaged 12.7 on average on a return. What we need to work on, our kickoff coverage squeeze and our kickoff return, our football position and delivering a blow.

Where do we go from here? We’re all disappointed and irritated to be where we are right now. No one thought we would be sitting here like this in this position. I said it once, I’m going to say it again, I believe in this group of players and coaches and what this team could be. We’re not there yet, but we owe it to each other and the organization to handle ourselves with class, prepare well this week and give us a chance to win the ballgame on Sunday night. With that, we’ll open it up.

Q: Have you had a chance to speak to Odell (Beckham)? How is he doing?

A: I spoke to him after the game. It’s a sad situation.

Q: Is it fair to say his season is over at this point?

A: Yes.

Q: How do you fill that void?

A: Yeah, we have a bunch of guys who were nicked up in the ballgame at the receiver spot. We have some guys on the practice squad, some guys on the roster that we just thought we would bump them up and give them opportunities. Next man up. They’re well deserving of opportunities. You hate to see it like this, but it’s a part of the game.

Q: Are there any long-term concerns about Odell’s injury?

A: I didn’t get into any of that. That’s unknown at this point.

Q: Does the goal of this season have to change?

A: Yeah, we just need to, like I said earlier, we owe it to each other. We put a lot of work and a lot of time and a lot of effort into this thing and we owe it to the organization to handle ourselves with class and go prepare well this week and give us a chance to win the game.

Q: How quickly can you get the new receivers that you’re bringing in up to speed?

A: Yeah, we have to go out and we have to make sure we give them as many reps as we can with the quarterback. Get them into some type of rhythm. Get some type of chemistry going. There are guys who are familiar with what we’re doing. So we have confidence there. We know them, they know us. So we just have to go out and put our work in this week.

Q: Yesterday after the game, Eli Apple said, ‘it’s not just one guy, it’s the whole culture, it’s everything. We’ve got to fix it.’ What is your reaction to the ‘whole culture’ part of that comment?

A: I’m not sure what you’re referring to. What was the question about that he was asked?

Q: He was asked about being benched and he ended up saying, “it’s not just one guy, it’s the whole culture, it’s everything. We’ve got to fix that.” Do you think you have a problem with the culture?

A: I think we are in a slump right now and we have to get back to work. Make sure we are holding each other and ourselves accountable. The standards can’t drop. The standards have got to stay high and we have to figure out a way to close these games in the fourth quarter with wins.

Q: Given the way the season has gone, are you going to give younger players more of a chance to go out and play?

A: Yeah, we are going to take a look. At this point, we have some guys that are nicked up, so it’s going to create opportunities just naturally for some younger players and for some other players to jump in there and play. And that sort of takes care of itself when you have the type of guys nicked up that we do. But we don’t shy away from playing young players, regardless.

Q: Is Victor Cruz an option to bring back?

A: To my knowledge, he is not an option, but never say never.

Q: What do you look for when you’re dealing with a situation like this?

A: Usually the day after the game and a little bit on Tuesday morning, the emotions are still there. That’s normal, that’s a part of it, that’s healthy. That means nobody is numb. But you have to flush those emotions before you get to that Wednesday practice and really after you correct the game on Tuesday, you have to flush the emotions and you have to move onto the next opponent. You have to keep your chin up and you got to be full speed ahead on the next one. That’s the most important thing for us. Be all in on the next one.

Q: How do you think Eli (Manning) played yesterday?

A: I thought he directed the runs well. I’m sure there were some throws he would like to have back.

Q: Are you at a point now where there is stuff that you can change? Or do you just stick to the program and hope it works out?

A: I think we just got to get better at getting better. Wholesale changes are tough at this point. Your players are your players, your coaches are your coaches. We need to find a way to go out and improve the fundamentals and prepare with class and give ourselves a chance to win.

Q: Are the next guys up Tavarres King and Travis Rudolph?

A: Nothing is set in stone right now, but those would be two pretty good options.

Q: During your slump, do you feel like you’re carrying over what happened from game to game?

A: Obviously the last three games have come down to the fourth quarter. We’ve been right in the ballgames and have had a lead in the fourth quarter in these ballgames and we haven’t been able to extend the lead and haven’t been able to keep the lead. There is a connection there whether you like to have that, no you wouldn’t, but that’s part of being in a slump. You got to find a way to win with each team you have and year to year it changes, and we haven’t been able to get that done and that’s my responsibility.

Q: How do you get that through to them?

A: We have to keep throwing effort at it. Yesterday, again, no excuses, we ran out of some firepower on offense. But the guys kept fighting. We have a lot of fight in this team. I’ll say that about them. There is a lot of fight, the games go down to the wire. We just got to find a way to find our path to victory.

Q: Do you have a problem with Janoris Jenkins leaving the field with 40 seconds left?

A: We’ll handle all those issues in-house.

Q: Have you had any conversations with ownership recently about how this season is going?

A: Everyone is disappointed, I am aware of it. Everyone is irritated, I am aware of it. But my focus right now is trying to help with the personnel department to field a football team this week to give us a chance to prepare and win.

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS 27 – NEW YORK GIANTS 22…
It just keeps getting worse and worse for the New York Giants, who lost their fifth consecutive game on Sunday, falling 27-22 to the Los Angeles Chargers at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Giants also lost four of their five active wide receivers to injury as Odell Beckham (fractured ankle), Sterling Shepard (ankle), Brandon Marshall (sprained ankle), and Dwayne Harris (fractured foot) left the game and did not return.

The injuries to Beckham and Marshall looked very serious. The Giants are officially reporting that Beckham fractured his ankle. ESPN is reporting that Beckham may undergo surgery as early as today or tomorrow. The NFL Network is reporting that the team believes Beckham broke his fibula. He will need to undergo an MRI to ascertain any ligament damage.

The game itself was sloppy and difficult to watch. The Giants squandered a 9-0 1st-quarter lead, and yet another 4th-quarter lead as the team was up 22-17 late in the contest.

After the teams exchanged punts to start the game, New York went up 2-0 as a botched snap by the Chargers was knocked out of the end zone for a safety. After both teams punted again, the Giants went up 9-0 on Orleans Darkwa’s 23-yard touchdown run, capping a 5-play, 64-yard drive. The play marked the first time a Giants’ running back scored a rushing touchdown this year. But the Chargers overtook the Giants on the scoreboard before halftime with an 8-play, 77-yard touchdown drive and a 12-play, 49-yard field goal drive. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to running back Melvin Gordon and place kicker Nick Novak kicked a 20-yard field goal. The Giants twice squandered excellent field position in the 2nd quarter – starting one drive at their own 45 and another at the Chargers 39-yard line – coming up with no further points in the first half.

The Giants went three-and-out to start the 3rd quarter. The Chargers drove to the Giants’ 14-yard line, but Rivers’ 3rd-and-7 pass was intercepted by safety Darian Thompson in the end zone. It was the first pass the Giants have picked off all season. The Giants then re-gained the lead on a 9-play, 80-yard effort, culminating with a perfect quarterback Eli Manning 29-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Roger Lewis. Giants 16 – Chargers 10.

But the defense could not hold the lead as the Chargers responded with a 12-play, 92-yard drive that ended with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Rivers to tight end Hunter Henry. It only took five plays (and 75 yards) for the Giants to move ahead again. Under duress, Manning found a wide-open Beckham for a 48-yard score. After a delay-of-game penalty, the Giants’ 2-point conversion attempt failed and New York led 22-17 with 13:31 to go in the game.

After both teams exchanged punts, the Chargers got the ball back again with nine minutes to play. Los Angeles moved the ball 48 yards in 11 plays to set up a successful 31-yard field with just under five minutes to go. Then came disaster. On 2nd-and-7, Manning’s high slant pass to Beckham fell incomplete. It was on this play where Beckham got seriously injured. On the very next snap, Manning was sacked and fumbled the ball away at the New York 11-yard line. On 3rd-and-9, Rivers found Gordon again out of the backfield for a 10-yard score. The Chargers now led 27-22 with three minutes to play.

However, by this point the Giants were down to only one wide receiver – Roger Lewis. The offensive line, which struggled all day in pass protection, allowing five sacks, imploded on the last possession with two penalties. Manning’s desperate 4th-and-10 pass from the Chargers’ 48-yard line was intercepted with less than 50 seconds to play. Game over.

The erratic Manning finished the game 21-of-36 for 225 yards, two touchdowns, 1 interception, and 1 lost fumble. The only player with over 30 yards receiving was Beckham with 5 catches for 97 yards. Against Los Angeles’ 31st-ranked run defense, the Giants had their best rushing game of the season with Orleans Darkwa rushing for 69 yards on eight carries and Wayne Gallman rushing for 57 yards on 11 carries.

Defensively, the Giants allowed 382 total net yards, including 124 yards rushing and 258 yards passing. The Giants have now allowed 100 yards rushing or more in five consecutive games to start the season. The Giants only forced one turnover and did not sack Rivers.

POST-GAME NOTES…
The Giants fell to 0-5 for only the fourth time in franchise history. They lost their first nine games in 1976, their first five in 1987 (three of them strike-replacement games), and their first six in 2013. In those seasons, they finished, respectively, 3-11, 6-9, and 7-0. The Giants were also winless through their first five games in 1947 (when they started 0-7-2) and 1966 (0-4-1).

The Chargers broke a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season. The Giants lost their fourth consecutive game to the Chargers, and now trail in the all-time series, 7-5.

Quarterback Eli Manning’s ninth pass attempt was the 7,000th of his career. He is the seventh quarterback in history to throw at least 7,000 regular-season passes.
