Quotes: Former Green Bay Packers QB Graham Harrell on how new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo can help QB Eli Manning: “I think Ben’s going to be tough on him. He’s going to coach him hard. That’s one thing I really respected about him while he was there. He tried to coach everyone tough. That can be tough, especially with Aaron who’s had so much success, who is such a good player. Well, now (McAdoo) s walking into a place with another quarterback who’s obviously a proven great player, a guy that’s won a lot of games, won Super Bowls. But Ben’s the kind of guy that’s going to come in and demand a lot out of him, expect a lot out of him, expect a lot of preparation…I definitely think that’s going to help with turnovers and stuff like that, just the preparation side, the demand that Ben’s going to put on him. And the Green Bay offense, or the offense that Ben’s going to bring to New York is going to be an offense that sets the quarterback up for success…I think he’s going to be good for Eli. I think Eli is a really good quarterback and can play in any offense, but I think Eli will be a great fit for Ben’s offense. I think it’s going to be a good match for each other. I think it can be set up for a fun year for the Giants.”

Kevin Gilbride, New York Giants (August 18, 2013)

New York Giants Offensive Coordinator Kevin Gilbride Retires: The New York Giants announced on Thursday that Offensive Coordinator Kevin Gilbride is retiring from football. Gilbride has been the Giants’ offensive coordinator since 2007. Before that, he served as the team’s quarterback coach from 2004-2006.

“It’s hard to say, ‘It’s time,’” Gilbride said. “To finally do it, it’s a very unnatural feeling. I’ve been telling my wife (Debbie) for years I was going to do it. She moved back to Rhode Island (where she helps care for a granddaughter when the Gilbrides’ daughter is working), so I’ve been by myself in the hotel for three or four years. I knew this was it and I was going to do it. I finally pulled the trigger. But it’s difficult.”

“I have great respect for Kevin and Debbie and their family, so it’s not an easy thing to part ways,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “Kevin is a professional. He’s been an exceptional football coach for the New York Giants. He helped win two Super Bowl championships. Kevin was the play-caller in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI. He has done a great service to the franchise.”

“Kevin is an outstanding coach who made enormous contributions to this franchise,” said team President and CEO John Mara. “He helped us win a lot of games over the past 10 years, including two Super Bowls. He will be remembered as one of the best coaches to ever represent the New York Giants.”

“Since Tom elevated Kevin to the role of offensive coordinator, we have added two more Executive Vice President Steve Tisch said. “For that, and Kevin’s tremendous commitment and dedication to his craft and this organization, we will always be grateful.”

“Kevin has been a special person around here for a long time and a very good football coach,” said General Manager Jerry Reese. “We are grateful for his years of service with us, especially during the two championship seasons. I wish only the best for him and his family moving forward.”

Gilbride has worked with QB Eli Manning since he was drafted in 2004.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Kevin,” Manning said. “I’m really sad to see him retire. He has been with me from day one as my quarterbacks coach and then my coordinator. He really taught me everything I needed to learn to become an NFL quarterback. We’ve had so much success together, obviously winning our two Super Bowls. His offenses have had great success in this league for many, many years. He’s been a great coach and great friend over these 10 years, and I’m definitely going miss him on the field and in the meeting rooms.”

The 2013 season was Gilbride’s 39th in coaching, 24th in the National Football League, and 10th with the Giants.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of coaching,” Gilbride said. “Certainly the last 10 years with the Giants has been a special time, to be part of the bringing the Super Bowls to New York and New Jersey and the Giants organization. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the development of some of the young players that we brought along, certainly starting with Eli. But (also) Steve Smith and Victor Cruz; they hadn’t had a Pro Bowl receiver since 1968 and we brought two back to them. That’s been fun. And I thoroughly enjoyed being part of those exciting last-minute drives that we seem to excel at. That 2011 season, we had six or seven of them, including the Super Bowl.”

Three of the Giants’ top five scoring teams in their history came under Gilbride: 2012 (429 points), 2008 (427), and 2009 (402). In 2011, the Giants gained a franchise-record 6,161 yards, breaking the mark of 6,085 set in 2010. Those are the only 6,000-yard seasons in Giants history.

With the demise of the offensive line and skill position players, the Giants’ offense struggled in 2013, finishing 28th in total yards.

“It is difficult to walk away after a season like that, no question,” Gilbride said. “You made the adjustments and you continue to modify and adapt and do the things you had to do to give your guys a chance. But all of the success we’ve had offensively through the last five or six years, we just weren’t able to get it done this year with all of the things that took place. But the thing we never did, we never used it as an excuse or explanation. We just continued to battle through and to win seven of our last 10 the way we did, I was very proud of our coaches and players.”

“What I’ll miss most of all are the relationships,” Gilbride said, “certainly starting with Tom and all that he means to us, but also the other coaches and the players. When you’re with them in that environment, the crucible of competition, it’s hard not to forge some very, very strong bonds. It will be very difficult to say goodbye to those guys. I will miss them terribly. I’ll miss everybody in the organization.”

NJ.com Reports That Kevin Gilbride Likely to Be Fired: NJ.com is reporting that “high-ranking officials in the Giants organization” believe that Giants’ offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride will soon be fired. The website is saying that the announcement may not be made official right away as organizational meetings ultimately determining Gilbride’s final fate could run into next week. NJ.com is also reporting that an unidentified source within the organization says that Head Coach Tom Coughlin is unlikely to put his job on the line to keep Gilbride.

Speculation is growing that the Giants might replace Gilbride with Mike Sullivan, Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator who was fired on Monday. Sullivan served as wide receivers (2004-2009) and quarterbacks (2010-2011) coach for the Giants under Tom Coughlin. “We obviously think very highly of him,” said New York Giants’ President/CEO John Mara on Monday.

Injury Update on LT Will Beatty and RB David Wilson: General Manager Jerry Reese was asked about LT Will Beatty, who broke his leg in the game against the Washington Redskins on Sunday. “We think he’ll be back and he’ll be ready to play next season. We do think that,” said Reese. “From early reviews, we think Will will be back. We think he will be back and hopefully he will be back and he can get going and have a good offseason as well. He didn’t play as well as we hoped he’d play. I think he’d own that as well. Hopefully he can get back, get healthy and go on and have a great off-season and be a good left tackle.”

Reese was also asked about the future status of RB David Wilson, who was placed on Injured Reserve in November with a potentially career-threatening neck injury.

“Those neck things, you have to wait around,” said Reese. “Those discs they have, sometimes they can shrink and it takes time for them to shrink. They did that and we’re waiting. At the beginning of the year, we’ll have another consultation with him, to see if surgery would be a possibility for him. That could be a possibility and if he has the surgery, I think the prognosis is that he’ll be ready to play next fall, if he has his surgery.”

Reese was then asked if the injury was career-threatening. “When you talk about necks, there’s always a possibility,” responded Reese. “We’re hopeful and the earlier reports that I’ve gotten, doctors do think they can fix this and he’ll be able to play…I think we’ll have to have some contingency plans at the running back position. I don’t think you go into the next season saying David Wilson’s going to be our number one, starting running back. I don’t think you can do that. The guy is coming off of a neck surgery, if he decides to have it.”

Giants Sign Eight Players to Reserve/Future Contracts: The Giants signed the following eight players to reserve/future contracts on Monday:

All eight players ended the season on the Giants’ practice squad.

Quotes: Former Giants Running Back Tiki Barber on QB Eli Manning: “He’s done great things, but he doesn’t do it consistently. What makes someone great in the history, in the annals of an organization or a league? It’s consistency. The problem with Eli, as of late, I think, is there’s something physically off. There’s definitely a confidence issue…It has everything to do with those five guys (on the offensive line) — and really it’s been eight over the course of this year — in front of him that just can’t get it done. He’s constantly throwing off his back foot. I feel like he’s pressing sometimes to make some throws and they end up sailing on him…It’s because of confidence and I think because he’s gotten the crap beat out of him…I’ve counted Eli out before and I’ve been wrong. Here’s what I know about him. He has a drive, and maybe it’s a Manning thing. … Is it still open for him to have great success in the next three or four years? I think it is.”

New York Giants 23 – Detroit Lions 20 (Overtime): The New York Giants defeated the Detroit Lions 23-20 in overtime on Sunday at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. With the win, the Giants improved their overall record to 6-9. The Giants also knocked the Lions out of playoff contention.

Behind a patchwork offensive line and missing WR Victor Cruz, the Giants used some creative offensive play-calling and strong defense in the first half to take a 13-3 halftime lead. Detroit began the game with a 10-play, 39-yard drive that stalled at the Giants’ 45-yard line after DE Mathias Kiwanuka sacked QB Matthew Stafford for a 12-yard loss. The Giants then began a 15-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a 41-yard field goal by PK Josh Brown. The two opening possessions took more than 11 minutes off of the clock.

Detroit responded with another long possession, driving 63 yards in 12 plays to set up a 37-yard field goal. Early in the second quarter, the game was tied 3-3.

The Giants went three-and-out on their second possession. Detroit drove from their own 35 to the Giants’ 45-yard line. But on 2nd-and-10, Kiwanuka forced RB Reggie Bush to fumble. The loose ball was recovered by S Antrel Rolle and returned to the Detroit 49-yard line. The Giants then put together a 9-play, 49-yard drive that resulted in a 20-yard touchdown pass from QB Eli Manning to WR Jerrel Jernigan. Giants 10 – Lions 3.

The Lions moved to the Giants 43-yard line on their fourth offensive possession, but on 2nd-and-17, DE Justin Tuck intercepted a Stafford pass with 47 seconds to go before halftime. Despite a sack, the Giants were able to get into field goal range and Brown kicked a 52-yarder with nine seconds left on the clock. Giants 13 – Lions 3.

The game completely changed in the second half as the Lions scored 17 unanswered points to take a 20-13 lead. Detroit dominated the line of scrimmage and the Giants were unable to run the football and Manning was under constant pass pressure. The Giants did not gain a single first down on their first five possessions of the second half. Worse, Manning was sacked in the end zone for a safety. After a 50-yard punt return by the Lions, Detroit cut the score to 13-10 with an 8-play, 30-yard drive. Both teams exchanged punts and then the safety occurred as New York led by only a single point, 13-12.

Momentum completely swung in Detroit’s favor as the Lions drove 63 yards in nine plays after the safety to go up 20-13 with the touchdown and successful 2-point conversion with under 12 minutes to play. New York went three-and-out on their next two offensive possessions. With just over five minutes to play, the Lions faced a 3rd-and-7 from their own 22-yard line. Stafford’s pass was tipped by the intended receiver and intercepted by S Will Hill who returned it 38 yards for the tying touchdown, 20-20.

Detroit went three-and-out. The Giants picked up one first down (their first of the second half) and punted. The Lions then picked up a first down and were forced to punt after another sack by Kiwanuka. With 50 seconds left in regulation, the Giants had the ball at their own 37-yard line and a chance to win. After two plays, the Giants crossed midfield, but with 28 seconds left, Manning’s deep pass over the middle intended for Jernigan was badly overthrown and intercepted.

The Giants won the coin toss and received the ball to start overtime. RB Michael Cox returned the kickoff deep out of the end zone for 56 yards to the Giants’ 49-yard line. After a 15-yard pass from Manning to TE Brandon Myers, RB Andre Brown fumbled the ball away. The Lions recovered at their own 28-yard line. The Giants’ defense held as Detroit went three-and-out.

The Giants then put together their final game-winning field-goal drive, marching 45 yards in 11 plays. The huge play on the drive was a 15-yard pass from Manning to Jernigan on 4th-and-7 from the Lions’ 42-yard line. Four plays later, Brown nailed the 45-yard field goal for the win.

Offensively, the Giants were held to 238 net yards passing and 41 net yards rushing. Manning finished the game 23-of-42 for 256 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. His leading receiver was Jernigan who caught six passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. Andre Brown was held to 40 yards on 16 carries (2.5 yards per rush).

Defensively, the Giants allowed 207 net yards passing and 148 net yards rushing. The leading tacklers were LB Jon Beason (11), S Ryan Mundy (10), and Hill (9). Hill intercepted a pass that he returned for a touchdown. Kiwanuka had 6 tackles, 2 sacks, and forced a fumble that Rolle recovered.

On special teams, the Giants gave up a 50-yard punt return but Cox also had a 56-yard kickoff return. Brown made all three of his field goal attempts from 41, 52, and 45 yards.

Post-Game Injury Report: TE Adrien Robinson sprained a knee on the opening kickoff and did not return. Brandon Mosley, who started at right guard, broke a hand on the opening drive and did not return. RB Andre Brown suffered a concussion in overtime and did not return.

Seattle Seahawks 23 – New York Giants 0: The Seattle Seahawks defeated the New York Giants 23-0 on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. With the loss, the Giants fell to 5-9 on the season, ensuring their first losing season since 2004.

The final score was closer than the actual game. The Seahawks led 13-0 at halftime as the Giants were held to two first downs and 54 total net yards. By the end of the third quarter, the Giants had four first downs. New York did not cross midfield on offense until mid-way through the fourth quarter. By game’s end, Seattle out-gained the Giants in first downs (21 to 12), total net yards (327 to 181), net yards rushing (134 to 25), net yards passing (193 to 156), and time of possession (33:58 to 26:02).

QB Eli Manning threw five interceptions and completed 18 of 31 passes for 156 yards. He also fumbled twice (both fumbles being recovered). Manning now has 25 interceptions on the season. RB Andre Brown was the Giants’ leading rusher with 17 yards on 11 carries. WR Jerrel Jernigan was the leading receiver with seven catches for 67 yards, mostly coming in garbage time.

Given the offensive ineptitude, the defense actually played decently in holding Seattle to only 23 points and 327 yards. Seattle scoring drives were 11 yards (field goal), 62 yards (touchdown), 40 yards (field goal), 39 yards (field goal), and 16 yards (touchdown). S Antrel Rolle intercepted one pass (his sixth of the season) and the Giants sacked QB Russell Wilson four times and hit him seven times. RB Marshawn Lynch was held to 47 yards on 16 carries.

“I expected a great effort today,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin after the game. “I think defensively and with our special teams, we got it. Offensively we did not – there’s no way to sugarcoat it. A pathetic offensive performance – we didn’t block anybody, we didn’t make any plays, we didn’t create any opportunities for ourselves. I told the players who prepared and gave great effort that I appreciated what they did, and I told those that were obvious they had not, that I felt sorry for them because they’re missing the whole point.”

“Coach Coughlin can’t take any of this blame,” said Rolle after the game. “Like I said, personally, I won’t allow that. He can’t take any of this blame. Coaches coach and they did a phenomenal job getting us prepared for this. We had a great week of practice. Everything that we saw out there from their offense, we went over with our coaches, defensive coordinator, assistant coaches, so forth and so on, and they did an exceptional job preparing us for today. Coach Coughlin, he’s a coach, but he can’t coach heart, he can’t make a play or have heart, he can’t make a player have passion about this game, and that’s what we were lacking out there today. Like I said, coach can say what he wants, but personally, I won’t allow him to take that because coaches coach and the players play the game.”

“Obviously sometimes out there today, we looked like we didn’t have a pulse and you can never do that playing a game of this magnitude, playing a game that’s this physical and playing an opponent like the Seattle Seahawks that live and die by pride, swagger, confidence,” said Rolle. “We knew that coming into the game today. They imposed their will on us today.”

Post-Game Injury Report: WR Victor Cruz left the game with a concussion and what is believed to be a sprained knee. RB Peyton Hillis also left the game with concussion symptoms. LG James Brewer left the game with an ankle injury.

The Giants were shut out for the first time at home in a regular-season game since 1995.

This is the first time the Giants have suffered two shutout defeats in the same season since 1996.

QB Eli Manning’s five interceptions increased his career total to 169, which is a new Giants’ record. Conerly had held the mark with 167.

The Giants have at least one turnover in all 14 games this season.

San Diego Chargers Crush New York Giants 37-14; Giants Eliminated from Playoff Contention: The San Diego Chargers mauled the New York Giants 37-14 on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. With the loss, the Giants fell to 5-8 on the season. The Giants were also officially eliminated from playoff contention with three regular-season games left to play.

The game was basically over at halftime with the Chargers taking a 24-0 lead. The Giants had six possessions before intermission, three ending with punts, two with turnovers, and the final possession of the half ending at the Chargers’ 6-yard line as time expired. Meanwhile, the Chargers scored on four of their five first-half possessions with drives of 50, 76, 67, and 39 yards resulting in three touchdowns and a field goal. At the half, the Chargers had gained 15 first downs, were 7-of-9 on third down (78 percent), and had accrued 250 total net yards.

The Giants did score touchdowns on their first two possessions of the second half. The first was set up when DE Justin Tuck sacked QB Phillip Rivers, forcing a fumble that DT Cullen Jenkins recovered at the San Diego 18-yard line. Seven plays later, RB Peyton Hillis scored from one yard out. On the Giants’ next possession, New York drove 86 yards in 11 plays with QB Eli Manning hitting TE Brandon Myers for a 5-yard touchdown. The Giants’ last two drives of the second half ended with a turnover on downs when Manning was sacked on 4th-and-5 at the Giants’ 42-yard line, and an interception by Manning with less than two minutes to play.

The Chargers kept pouring it on in the second half. After the turnover to start the third quarter, San Diego scored a touchdown and two field goals on their next three drives. They simply knelt on the ball to end the game on their final possession.

Offensively, Manning finished the game 20-of-32 for 259 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. His leading receivers were WR Hakeem Nicks (5 catches for 135 yards), WR Victor Cruz (5 catches for 42 yards), and Myers (4 catches for 26 yards and a touchdown). RB Andre Brown gained 81 yards on 16 carries and Hillis gained 11 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Brown fumbled the ball away once.

Defensively, the Chargers scored on seven of nine possessions (not counting the final knee-down). The Chargers finished the game 10-of-15 on third down (67 percent) and held a 36:56 to 23:04 time of possession advantage. San Diego also gained 144 yards rushing.
