Shockey Not Happy With Giants, May Not Report to Mini-Camp

Shockey Not Happy With Giants, May Not Report to Mini-Camp:  TE Jeremy Shockey attended a promotional event in Flushing Meadows yesterday and Shockey spoke to reporters for the first time in months.

Shockey told reporters that he may not report to the mandatory mini-camp next week (June 11-13).  He also said he is not happy about the fact that the Giants supposedly chose to reveal too much about his situation this offseason.

"The statement I would like to make about the Giants and speculation in the offseason is that whatever happens between the upper management, the lower management, the owners, any management, is going to keep between ourselves," said Shockey.  "Unlike the Giants, I’m going to be quiet.  They’ve released multiple things about myself.  If you look back into the media, there’s always a source; well, I’d like to know who the source is, we’ll go over here and deal it out ourself.  Because I haven’t said one negative thing towards the Giants in the newspapers, I have never expressed feelings about the things you guys made up, I’m here doing a great deal with POWERade and that’s it.  You guys will be able to talk to me if I make it to mini-camp, so you guys have a chance to interrogate me a little bit more."

Shockey broke his fibula and suffered an ankle injury in December 2007 against the Redskins.  "I feel like I been getting better," said Shockey.  "Obviously I’m not 100 percent and if I do show to minicamp its going to be, I wouldn’t imagine me doing much, just getting treatment on my leg.  So this is the only statement I’m going to make and this is going to be between the Giants and myself and that’s really about it."

Shockey was asked if he will attend the mini-camp.  "Who knows?," said Shockey.  "You know me, I might go back to see my mother in Texas.  I have no idea."

Giants OTA Report

Giants OTA Report:  For the first time this offseason, the press was granted access to a Giants’ Organized Team Activity (OTA) practice yesterday.  This was the third of six OTA practices the Giants will hold.  The Giants will hold two more OTAs this week and one next Monday.  There will be a full-squad mandatory mini-camp on June 11-13.

OTAs are non-mandatory.  The following players were not in attendance yesterday:  DE Michael Strahan, DE Osi Umenyiora, LB Antonio Pierce, WR Plaxico Burress, and TE Jeremy Shockey.  Umenyiora was present for at least one earlier OTA last week.  Pierce recently got married.  Burress and Shockey are both recovering from injuries suffered during last season.  Newsday is reporting that one unidentified source says Shockey will attend the mini-camp.

A video of the defensive line at work at the OTAs is available at Giants.com.

For some snippets on the practice, check out these reports:

Injury Report:  WR David Tyree (offseason knee surgery) and QB Andre’ Woodson (quad) did not practice.  TE Michael Matthews (shoulder) was limited.  Woodson said he expects to return to practice next week.

"Rehab," said Tyree.  "Really, it is all strengthening the muscles and all that good stuff again, making sure the swelling has gone down, and all the atrophy is gone.  It is just normal rehab."

LB Mathias Kiwanuka (leg/ankle) and HB Derrick Ward (leg) both practiced.

"It feels real good to just be back out there, back in the flow, and getting after it again," said Kiwanuka.  "Just walking out there on the field, putting a helmet on - it took so long and it has been so long since I have been out there and the next step is putting the pads on and getting to hit somebody.  I am looking forward to all of it."

Giants Officially Announce Signing of Wynn

Giants Officially Announce Signing of Wynn:  Following up on  yesterday’s "News and Notes" update, the Giants have officially announced that they have signed DE/DT Renaldo Wynn.  He was reportedly signed to a 1-year deal.

"Renaldo is a solid veteran who can give us some snaps on the inside or the outside," said General Manager Jerry Reese.  "He’s a real team football player who will give us some depth and competition at a couple of different positions, so we’re excited to see what he can do for us.  We always like to add defensive linemen.  We’re still not sure what (DE) Michael (Strahan) is going to do as far as retirement goes.  If Michael does retire it gives us a veteran who can play end and tackle.  It gives us more veteran depth, instead of having too many young guys."

"I drafted Renaldo coming out of Notre Dame and he has the versatility to play both tackle and end, which is very attractive," said Head Coach Tom Coughlin.  "We played against him when he was in Washington.  Renaldo has always been a very smart, durable guy who can play multiple positions.  He’s a good solid team guy and an outstanding character guy who is great for the locker room.  He works well with young players.  He’s a steady, heady player.  Quite frankly, in our situation, we’ll be a player down if Strahan does retire and we have to protect ourselves."

“(His ability to play end or tackle is) very valuable," Coughlin said.  "We’ve seen that with Justin Tuck.  Renaldo can play the run on first and second down – he doesn’t have to come in only on pass downs.  He played inside last year, so he can defend against the run."

Because Wynn was signed after June 1, he will not factor into the Giants’ chances for compensatory picks in the 2009 NFL Draft.  Free agents signed after June 1 do not count in the compensatory pick formula used by the NFL.  This offseason, the Giants have signed LB Danny Clark (Houston Texans) and S Sammy Knight (Jacksonville Jaguars).  The Giants have lost S Gibril Wilson (Oakland Raiders), LB Kawika Mitchell (Buffalo Bills), LB Reggie Torbor (Miami Dolphins), and DT William Joseph (Oakland Raiders).  Since QB David Carr was waived by the Carolina Panthers, he does not count with respect to the formula either.

Giants Place LB Keith O’Neil on Reserve/Retired List:  The Giants announced yesterday that they have placed LB Keith O’Neil on the Reserve/Retired List.  Because of this move, we have updated the Transactions, Roster, and Depth Chart sections of the website.

Giants Agree to Terms with DE/DT Renaldo Wynn

Giants Agree to Terms with DE/DT Renaldo Wynn:  According to The Star-Ledger and The Daily News, the Giants and unrestricted free agent DE/DT Renaldo Wynn (New Orleans Saints) agreed to terms over the weekend.  The Ledger is reporting that the deal is a 1-year contract.  Wynn met with the Giants two weeks ago (see "News and Notes from May 16).

Because of this move, we have updated the 2008 Free Agent Scorecard, Free Agent Signings (includes scouting report on Wynn), Roster, and Depth Chart sections of the website.

Giants Return to Practice in Preparation for the 2008 NFL Season

Giants Return to Practice in Preparation for the 2008 NFL Season:  A day after receiving their Super Bowl Championship rings, the New York Giants returned to practice fields on Friday for the first of six Organized Team Activity (OTA) practices in advance of the June 11-13 full-squad mini-camp.

The players worked primarily on individual and unit drills, not a full-squad practice.  The emphasis was on fundamentals.  On Saturday the players will be back on the fields again with the offense and defense facing off in no-pads, no-contact workouts.

"That, for me, is what it is all about," said Head Coach Tom Coughlin after Friday’s OTA practice, "having the players on the field with the coaches, working on the game that everybody loves and again keeping your eye on the prize."

"We had our rings (Thursday) night and we are on the field (Friday)," Coughlin said.  "It is flipping the page and it is moving forward and I thought that was the significance of today.  After spending the offseason basically trying to get back to catching up I feel like our staff is all back to where we normally are.  It was a really good connection, I think, for everybody."

"The timing is great, because this is the first time we’re back on the field," said DE/DT Justin Tuck said.  "With the ring we can pretty much put ’07 to rest and start a new chapter in ’08."

"I think all of us look at it that way," LT David Diehl said.  "We enjoyed the moment of getting the ring.  But now it’s over.  It’s back to business and working hard and getting back on the right track and focusing on the next season, like we have this entire offseason.  It’s time to go back to work, because we understand that it was the things we did in the offseason to get us ready for training camp that separated us."

"It is definitely fun to be out there with the guys running around," said HB Brandon Jacobs.  "You love going out and opening up the runs and actually playing around with the football.  I think the OTAs, fresh off a season like we just had, are better.  They’re better this year than it was in any other year."

"It was definitely fun, I can’t even deny that," said DE Osi Umenyiora.  "We’re a little rusty, but it was still fun.  I enjoyed myself…I was out here and I was like ‘Man, I am still trying to get my technique back down.’  So I feel like we need to start focusing on one thing at a time and basically work on our preseason schedule, work on training camp, work on mini camps, and then we will start worrying about what is going to happen after that."

After the June 11-13 mini-camp, the veterans will be off until training camp starts on July 24.  The rookies will work for an additional 10 days.

More From Thursday Night’s Ring Ceremony:  The videos of the brief press remarks made by Giants’ President/CEO John Mara,  Chairman/Executive Vice President Steve Tisch, Head Coach Tom Coughlin, QB Eli Manning, and DE Michael Strahan after Thursday night’s ring ceremony are available at Giants.com:

Giants Receive Their Super Bowl Rings

Giants Receive Their Super Bowl Rings:  The Super Bowl Champion New York Giants received their Super Bowl Championship rings at a private ceremony at Tiffany and Co. last night in New York City.

The rings include 1.5 carats in diamonds and cost approximately $5,500 each (though they are valued at $25,000).  The ring features the team’s three Super Bowl trophies, the team’s "ny" logo set in round diamonds, and the phrase "World Champions" in raised letters on the top and bottom bezel.  Channel-set diamonds also are included on the left and right bezel.  One shank includes each player’s last name and jersey number, the phrase "Eleven Straight on the Road", and the NFL Shield.  The other shank includes the Super Bowl XLII logo, the final score of the game, and the date and location of the game.

"After four months of waiting, it’s everything I expected it to be," said defensive end Michael Strahan.  "It feels good.  I mean look at it – it is unbelievable.  An unbelievable ring, we are an unbelievable team, and it was an unbelievable season."

According to the Giants, 85 rings were distributed last night.  And 57 of those were to players, including former Giants safety Gibril Wilson and linebacker Kawika Mitchell (linebacker Reggie Torbor was not present).  Missing were tight end Jeremy Shockey, linebacker Antonio Pierce (currently on his honeymoon), and cornerback Darren Barnett.  Also receiving rings were the assistant coaches, former Giants’ General Manager Ernie Accorsi, and team inspiration Lt. Colonel Greg Gadson.

Giants’ President/CEO John Mara and Chairman/Executive Vice President Steve Tisch provided brief remarks.  Then Ann Mara and Joan Tisch, the widows of Wellington Mara and Bob Tisch, were presented Super Bowl pendants by their sons.  General Manager Jerry Reese and Head Coach Tom Coughlin were then given their rings, as was Ernie Accorsi.  Coughlin then distributed rings to the 18 assistant coaches, Gadson, the team captains (quarterback Eli Manning, Strahan, center Shaun O’Hara, and punter Jeff Feagles), and the rest of the players.

"The thing that is important to recognize in terms of our players and our organization is tonight we spend a lot of time talking about the ring and what the ring symbolizes, but really what it is you are going to carry this in your heart forever and that is what is important," said Coughlin.  "You are the world champions, you never get tired of hearing about that, it is a tremendous, tremendous accomplishment for this group of young men and how they went about doing it, the coaching staff and the group of players that accomplished what they did."

"As a kid you always think about winning a Super Bowl, winning a championship," said LT David Diehl.  "When you have that ring you are in a unique class.  It is something that we will remember for the rest of our lives and something no one will be able to take away from us."

"We did it together and won it as a team," said Manning.  "Every game was different and in every situation someone else stepped up and contributed to us winning.  It’s all about the Giants."
