AUGUST 5, 2019 NEW YORK GIANTS TRAINING CAMP REPORT…
The New York Giants held their tenth full-team summer training camp practice on Monday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The complete public training camp schedule is available at Giants.com.

ROSTER MOVES…
The New York Giants have waived offensive guard Austin Droogsma and re-signed offensive tackle Malcom Bunche.

The Giants signed Droogsma after he impressed at the 2019 rookie mini-camp. The 6’4”, 345-pound Droogsma was a star shot-putter at Florida State. He has not played football since high school in 2012.

The 27-year old, 6’6”, 319-pound Bunche was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2015 NFL Draft. Bunche has spent time with the Eagles (2015), Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2017), and Jacksonville Jaguars (2017). The Giants signed Bunche after he impressed as a tryout player during the May 2018 rookie mini-camp, but cut before the season started. He has not played in a regular-season game.

INJURY REPORT…
Wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring), wide receiver Brittan Golden (groin), offensive tackle George Asafo-Adjei (concussion), offensive tackle Chad Wheeler (unknown), linebacker Avery Moss (unknown), and cornerback Sam Beal (hamstring) did not practice on Monday.

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard (thumb) and cornerback Grant Haley (shoulder) participated with non-contact jerseys.

Defensive end B.J. Hill was excused from practice due to the birth of his child. Safety Michael Thomas and long snapper Zak DeOssie were excused in order to participate in NFLPA duties.

Offensive tackle Brian Mihalik (burner) left practice early.

MEDIA PRACTICE NOTES…
Some snippets from various media sources:

  • The quarterbacks completed 14 of their first 16 pass attempts, primarily focused on the short passing game.
  • CB Deandre Baker broke up a long pass from QB Eli Manning to WR Golden Tate.
  • LB Ryan Connelly was unblocked o a blitz up the middle and “sacked” the quarterback; LB Alec Ogletree also got to the quarterback with an inside spin move.
  • QB Eli Manning threw a “perfect” deep pass to WR Cody Latimer over CB Janoris Jenkins.
  • CB Janoris Jenkins broke up two passes.
  • At one point in practice, Corey Ballentine and Deandre Barker were the first-team corners with Janoris Jenkins playing in the slot.
  • CB Corey Ballentine broke up a pass intended for WR Sterling Shepard.
  • QB Alex Tanney connected with WR Alex Wesley, who ran a good route and beat CB Grant Haley.
  • LB Kareem Martin got past LT Nate Solder on a blitz and forced QB Eli Manning to spike the ball into the ground.
  • In red zone drills, tight coverage from CB Corey Ballentine caused an incomplete pass from QB Daniel Jones to WR Bennie Fowler. But then Jones threw a touchdown pass to WR T.J. Jones against Ballentine.
  • In 7-on-7 drills, CB Grant Haley knocked away a QB Alex Tanney pass intended for WR Da’Mari Scott in the end zone.
  • QB Daniel Jones had a good day, completing 10-of-16 passes with three of those going to WR Bennie Fowler.

ROSTER MOVES…
The New York Giants have placed linebacker Mark McLaurin on Injured Reserve with a broken foot and waived defensive end Alex Jenkins. To fill these roster spots, the Giants signed defensive end/linebacker Terrence Fede and claimed linebacker Joey Alfieri off of waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Giants signed McLaurin, a collegiate safety, as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Giants signed Jenkins after he impressed as a tryout player during the 2019 rookie mini-camp. Born in England, Jenkins was part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program and spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons on the Practice Squad of the New Orleans Saints.

The 27-year old, 6’4”, 267-pound Fede was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. In four seasons with the Dolphins, Fede played in 51 regular-season games with no starts, accruing 55 tackles and one sack. AUGUST 2, 2019 NEW YORK GIANTS TRAINING CAMP REPORT…
The New York Giants held their eighth full-team summer training camp practice on Friday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The complete public training camp schedule is available at Giants.com.

INJURY REPORT…
Wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring), wide receiver Brittan Golden (groin), offensive tackle George Asafo-Adjei (concussion), offensive tackle Chad Wheeler (unknown), defensive end Alex Jenkins (unknown), linebacker B.J. Goodson (hamstring), linebacker Markus Golden (load management), linebacker Oshane Ximines (unkown), linebacker Mark McLaurin (foot), cornerback Grant Haley (shoulder), cornerback Sam Beal (hamstring), and cornerback Henre’ Toliver (ankle) did not practice on Friday.

“(Haley) dove for a ball yesterday and fell on his shoulder,” said Head Coach Pat Shurmur. “He’s going to be fine.”

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard (thumb) practiced on a limited basis.

TRAINING CAMP OBSERVATIONS FROM GIDIEFOR…
It was a very warm day today. Temperatures hovered around ninety degrees. The air was dry, but the sky was overcast with dark clouds on the horizon. There was no lightening siren today, however. The entire team was out there in position groups with their coaches doing drills as we waited to get on the field. The four quarterbacks in their red shirts were to the right practicing in unison different combinations with drop backs, stepping up in the pocket then releasing passes to different sides, and tossing. The offensive tackles were one at a time taking their pre-snap position, taking their first steps after the snap, then punching pads their coach was holding, left tackles stepping and punching to the left, right tackles to the right. The offensive guards were crouching and springing forward hitting the man in front of them. The defensive players were far to the right field and I couldn’t see clearly what they were doing.

We were let onto the practice area and escorted to the far right field. The format was similar to Tuesday in that first the whole team stretched, then there were position drills, then began 4 practice sets of 11-on-11’s interspersed with special teams, installs, and position drills and then the finish was a 7-on-7 period. Each set consisted of 4 plays for each of the first, second and third teams.

I hung out where the defensive backs were practicing today. The defensive back corps have one thing in common, they all appear to have very good hands. They did a drill today where they were spotting a receiver and incoming pass and flying in and up to intercept the pass right before the receiver’s out-stretched hands. They also did a tipped ball drill. They were things of beauty to watch as each of them flew in and up and sucked in the ball, except for Jake Carlock who didn’t look graceful at this at all. They switched with the linebackers and they aren’t as smooth as the DBs but each of them sucked in the ball.

None of the cornerbacks is taller than 6’ but Corey Ballentine and Antonio Hamilton are the tallest of the lot and have the most imposing physiques of the CBs. To my eyes, Ballentine has been more of a presence than the other two rookies Deandre Baker and Julian Love who both made plays today, and also gave up as many plays as they made. Jabrill Peppers is the most solidly built of the safeties, and Sean Chandler is the guy who stands out in that group on the field when at play. Even so, I have to keep reminding myself that this is still the second week of training camp, and that the actual play out there is not with real hitting yet. The first real hitting will come when they play their first preseason game with the Jets, so I am discounting all performances until the hitting really starts.

Notes:

  • TE C.J. Conrad, even with the disclaimer above, stood out to me today. He stood out with his blocking, and he made a spectacular sideline grab that was called out-of-bounds by the referee across the field. I was looking down the line as he came down with the grab and it looked like a good catch to me, albeit close to the line.
  • WR Bennie Fowler made another outstanding catch today.
  • I keep rooting for WR Alonzo Russell. He is a big man. The biggest of the WRs. He made a clunker out of the first ball that came to him today, but after that he caught two that were pretty solid.
  • RB Saquon Barkley made another outstanding physical run right up the middle on the first play of the first set which got a roar out of the crowd.
  • TE Rhett Ellison made a really good play out of an QB Eli Manning pass for a touchdown during the two-minute drill.
  • TE Evan Engram made a nice grab in the first set of plays.
  • WR Reggie White, Jr. looked awful on a ball that thrown to him.
  • Linebackers Alec Ogletree and Kareem Martin stood out to me today – they were both very active and disruptive out there.
  • S Sean Chandler made a number of plays out there including a big hit on RB Jonathan Hilliman.
  • WR Amba Etta-Tawo made a nice grab.
  • CB Deandre Baker stuck to Russell and batted the first ball thrown at him away.
  • LB Kareem Martin is an animal on special teams – they were doing box out drills and he has an unfair advantage size wise on most of the other special teamers.
  • FB Eli Penny made an outstanding block on a running play. It looked real and it had impact.
  • WR Sterling Shepard made another one-handed grab today and he is looking fast out there.
  • WR Golden Tate also made a tough catch up the middle.
  • WR Cody Latimer had a bad day missing on a big play.

MEDIA PRACTICE NOTES…
Some snippets from various media sources:

  • Brian Mihalik and Victor Salako were the second-team offensive tackles on Friday.
  • RB Saquon Barkley burst through the line on the first play of the 11-on-11 drills.
  • Initially, the starting inside linebackers were Alec Ogletree and Ryan Connelly. Then Tae Davis subbed for Ogletree.
  • Julian Love practiced with the first team at nickel corner and second team at safety.
  • Chad Slade received reps at right tackle with the first, second, and third teams.
  • QB Eli Manning threw a touchdown pass to TE Rhett Ellison from about 15 yards out.
  • CB/S Julian Love knocked down a QB Daniel Jones deep pass into the end zone.
  • QB Kyle Lauletta threw a long touchdown pass to WR Reggie White, Jr.
  • LB Jake Carlock had a nice edge rush during 11-on-11 drills and may have “sacked” the quarterback.
  • CB Janoris Jenkins knocked away an inside pass from QB Eli Manning.
  • QB Kyle Lauletta threw two more touchdown passes, this time to TE C.J. Conrad and TE Scott Simonson.
  • TE C.J. Conrad received some first-team reps.
  • Most of the passing game was short- to intermediate-level. QB Eli Manning was 10-of-12; QB Daniel Jones was 6-of-11.
  • TE Evan Engram was active catching the football.

JULY 31, 2019 NEW YORK GIANTS TRAINING CAMP REPORT…
The New York Giants held their sixth full-team summer training camp practice on Wednesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The complete public training camp schedule is available at Giants.com.

INJURY REPORT…
Wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring), wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo (illness), wide receiver Brittan Golden (groin), offensive tackle George Asafo-Adjei (concussion), linebacker Markus Golden (load management), linebacker Nate Stupar (load management), linebacker Mark McLaurin (broken foot), and cornerback Henre’ Toliver (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday.

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard (thumb) participated, but was limited, in full-team drills wearing a yellow “non-contact” jersey and catching some passes with his good hand.

Wide receiver Alex Wesley (unknown) was activated from the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List and practiced.

Both linebacker B.J. Goodson and defensive end Alex Jenkins left practice early with what appeared to be leg/knee injuries.

TRAINING CAMP OBSERVATIONS BY SY’56…
Today’s practice indoor was a bit of a bummer. Less opportunity to see what I want to see…they keep the media in pretty tight windows. Also with the difference in space to work with, practice in there kind of seems 70-80%. But anyway….

First thing I wanted to get a feel for were the bodies of young guys and how they are developing 1-2 years in to NFL strength and conditioning programs. OT Chad Wheeler, OLB Avery Moss, and DT Dalvin Tomlinson showed noteworthy gains from what I remember in 2017. Wheeler still has a good amount of awkward movement when he has to adjust off his plan and Moss still seems erratic, lacking natural flow to the action. As an edge rusher, that is always vital though.

The overall feel of practice seemed different than when I was last there with Ben McAdoo calling the shots. The team overall seemed more into practicing, less into dancing. The team was playfully bantering back and forth, trash talking a lot, but then quick to pick each other up. The camaraderie was notable throughout the day.

Offense

Saquon Barkley loos like a Greek God, we all know that. He is as explosive as he is quick and agile, we all know that. One thing you may not know….he is in tune with practice as much as any player out there if not more. Constantly listening to coaches, fully honed in on watching the 3rd string offense, barking out instructions and cheering them on. The first to celebrate a big play by someone else. This dude is THE guy on this team in every positive way possible.

-There isn’t a QB debate for week 1. That said, the talent gap between Eli Manning and Daniel Jones is not significant. That is not an insult to Manning or a compliment to Jones. Just a simple observation. Where I do see a difference is the decisiveness and confidence, nothing surprising.

Manning didn’t have a great day. There weren’t any positive noteworthy throws and he was picked off twice. I don’t have much to report on him to be honest. He is what we all think he is at this point.

Jones was more interesting to watch. Out of the four QBs tossing the ball, I would rank his arm strength the worst. I won’t call his arm weak by any means, but there was a little lack of zip on balls up the seam and to the sidelines 10+ yards downfield. He also seemed overly hesitant…a lot of double/triple tapping the ball as he stared his target down. The defense certainly was able to take advantage of that on multiple occasions. On his final O vs D drive, he excelled. I think there were four  straight completions that ended with a TD to Alonzo Russell. The drive started off with a near-INT, but he bounced back and layered the ball nicely a few times. Calm, composed, brave in the pocket. That is how I left impression-wise.

Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate can be a real pain for opposing defenses. Neither are going to be Beckham, we know that, but those two can get open underneath consistently. They are both going to do damage after the catch too. I kept on writing “dependable” next to the two of them. If this offense can get in to 3rd-and-sub-5 consistently, the combination of them along with Evan Engram and Barkley underneath can be top notch.

-Speaking of Engram, let’s remember how he ended the season over the last 4 weeks (320 yards 14.5 avg). Since he was drafted, I have always thought he was the one pass catcher that could bring this passing game to the next level. He is a monster after the catch, clearly outrunning angles of both safeties and linebackers with ease.

-The other pass catchers on the team didn’t stand out. Solid day for Russell against backups, and Reggie White made a couple highlight-worthy grabs.

-The offensive line, in particular the starting 5, looks much more solid than what we have been watching the past few years. Kevin Zeitler looks like a rock. Steady, technically proficient, and strong. I am still nervous about Mike Remmers or whoever else is in line to play RT. Remmers was blown up by Tomlinson for a TFL early in team session. He doesn’t stick to his man, sustaining seems tough.

-The backup OTs leave a lot to be desired. Wheeler, we know what we have there. But Brian Mihalik is a guy we shouldn’t want to see in the game at any point. Pad level is a mess and even though the wingspan helped him a few times, he didn’t look good at all. He missed an inside blitz on 2 occasions that would have resulted in sacks.

Defense

-I was set up near the DBs to start off the day. Deandre Baker looks like he is ready for starting action when it comes to speed. However, he is the one DB that looks under-fed, weak on contact. He didn’t seem overly aggressive when it came to contact, it stood out to me. He also missed a cover assignment on a play the defense went over time and time again in group-walk through. It is a play every team uses…where the WR clears up the seam leaving the flat open for the back. Baker was caught looking in the backfield and by the time he realized Barkley was in full-go to the flat, it was too late. It would have been a big gain.

-I was visibly surprised and impressed by Sam Beal. What a body that kid has and he is fully functional from a movement perspective. Still has rawness to his game assignment wise but if you asked me to pick the most impressive looking athlete in the DB group, it is Beal by a landslide.

-Speaking of impressive tools, Corey Ballentine has the goods physically. Notably tall, long, and lean muscle with a burst-to-speed that very few have. There is more twitch and reaction to his game that I was expecting. Future is there for him.

Jabrill Peppers looks like a short linebacker. He is yoked…but may actually be the twitchiest player on the team including Barkley. Just an unreal athlete. I think this team needs to get the ball in his hands 3-4 times per game…whether it be as a PR/KR or on offense. He can make things happen and he gets after it hard. One thing I would be somewhat worried about, he and Antoine Bethea look awfully short for a safety pair. I think downfield coverage and tight end coverage can be a little rough there. Add the fact that Julian Love seems to be in the mix for the backup spot, another short one, this could be an issue to keep an eye on.

-Man, if it were the 90’s, we may be looking at this defensive line as one of the most dominant in the league. B.J. Hill, Dexter Lawrence, Pierre Olsen, and Dalvin Tomlinson eat up so much space and blockers. They are massive. My question will revolve around the pass rush though because I’m not sure those guys are gonna offer what this group sorely needs in that department. I do think these guys will be awfully tough to run against though.

-It seemed to me that James Bettcher was paying more attention to rookie LB Ryan Connelly than any other player on the field. A lot of pre- and post-play conversation. A lot of head nodding, a lot of clapping. I think the spot next to Alec Ogletree is wide open. Connelly is a better athlete than people think and the dude doesn’t hesitate after the snap. In an aggressive scheme, that is important.

-One name that stood out, albeit against backups, was DT Jake Ceresna. He broke through the line for a couple TFLs and had a sack. I don’t know much about him, but I’ll. be on the lookout for more there.

July 30, 2019 BBI New York Giants Training Camp Report

by gidiefor

It was a hot and very muggy day today. Temperatures were in the mid-nineties and the air was heavy with moisture. It was seemingly going to be a brutal day out on the training field. The press corps gathered at the barriers to get escorted onto the field. I was surprised to see that the entire team was already out there in groups of twos, threes and fours practicing position drills. Directly in front of us were the four quarterbacks in their red shirts practicing in what looked like choreographed unison. They were taking fake snaps, taking three steps back and then stepping to the side and releasing a fake pass. As I started looking around the field to see what the other position groups were doing, a siren went off. It’s the lightening siren our chaperones said. No outside practice today. The players all stopped what they were doing and proceeded to trot over and into the indoor practice field. I’m sorry to say that practice was suddenly closed to the public today.

Inside the Quest Diagnostic Center Practice field we were huddled into a corner. The players formed into two groups. The offensive and defensive lines away on the far side from us and the rest of the team in front started stretching and did their warm ups in unison. The linemen doing a different set of stretches and warmups from the rest of the team.

There were essentially five full, 11-on-11 practice sets with 12 plays run in each set. It was preceded by hitting and rolling for the defense, squatting into position and starting initial post-snap footwork for the offensive line, then they added hitting the man in front of them, shagging passes for the rest of the offense, and backtracking, swiveling the hips and running and catching for the backfield. Special teams practiced in between a few of the sets and the coaches ran through some walk-through scenarios between another series of sets.

The sets took place sometimes in front of us and sometimes at the back of the field going towards us at the other end. I decided due to my position that I better focus on something, as I had my compact Nikon binoculars with me, and for some period of time I focused on the right side of the line and for another period the defensive line.

There is a non-story to tell this year. We haven’t been hearing much about it. The non-story is the offensive line. I know it’s just practice. I’m tipping my hat to BB’56 here. But there is a quiet confidence in the starting offensive line. It is palpable. The press isn’t even talking about it because there is nothing else to say right now. They all feel this line is better. To my eyes this is probably the best offensive line the Giants have fielded since 2011 if not longer. I argue that it was 2011 the year Seubert and O’Hara were cut and David Baas was signed to replace O’Hara. Baas never really worked out and Seubert was never effectively replaced.

Remmers looks good out there. He is playing three out of every four snaps right now. In the current scheme, the right tackle appears to be making the assignment calls. He and Zeitler look good together. Will Hernandez is the meanest sob on the line for my money. He looks mean and he is actively going after everything in front of him. It doesn’t matter how big they are, they are all eating dirt when he’s finished with them. He is downright big and scary looking. Did I mention that he scowls a lot? Solder looks very active out there. He too is playing three out of every four snaps for the first team. The last time I saw Wheeler, he was a gangly looking rookie. This year the player guide says he is up 12 pounds to 318 from his rookie playing weight of 306. I called Sy’56 up and asked him to take a look at this because I don’t believe it. Wheeler looks 20 or even 30 pounds heavier to me. His body looks radically different. He’s beefy. He’s tall, and doesn’t look like he can be pushed around that easy (nor was he). The wrap against him two years ago was “light in the pants.” Brian Mihalik is the second-team left tackle, who comes in for Solder on the fourth set. He is 6’9” and another very beefy and active dude.

This leads me back to a comment I made above about big bodies. The Giants prototype appears to have evolved into a lot of big men in tights out there. The starting defensive line are all big men: Tomlinson, Lawrence and Hill. Lorenzo Carter is also a very big man behind them, and he rotates into that front three. Golden is not as big, but he is beefy and he plays big. Kareem Martin is a big man. McIntosh is a big man. Ximines, Ogletree and Moss are not quite as big but they are all pushing 250+ and 6’3”. So these guys are all Giants. I’m not taking a lot away from the first practice after the first off-day, but this is overall a bigger, beefier set of guys and they are all very active out there on defense.

Notes:

  • The defensive backfield played well today overall – a bunch of pass breakups.
  • Corey Ballentine made a great play out there today, going up and grabbing the first interception against Daniel Jones. It was something Shurmur made sure to talk about with the press corps after practice, when he took and unscheduled casual walk over to chat.
  • Bennie Fowler made an outstanding sideline catch right in front of us that got a few gasps.
  • Saquon Barkley made an outstanding physical run right up the middle that he broke and would have been a long touchdown. This is the first time I’ve seen him up close and he is an awesome specimen.
  • Daniel Jones didn’t have great day today but my general notes on him are that he looks very natural out there. He did make some exaggerated motions today later in practice, but he has a nice release and a lot of power. It’s been said before, but his best throw appears to be the screen pass. He puts a nice touch on the ball. He threw a great looking screen to Paul Perkins.
  • Speaking of Paul Perkins, there is a body of sentiment out there that he’s the best pass catching back outside of Barkley and that he’s winning himself a spot on the team this camp.
  • Eli looked pretty sharp out there to me.
  • Kim Jones and Charlie Casserly were standing a few feet away from me when they started taping a spot with each other and he was gushing over Oshane Ximines. He said that he reminds him of Osi Umenyiora, and he thinks he has the most potential out of all the 2019 picks and that they have a similar body type.
  • Shurmur said there was some individual work they cut out of practice today. He also said that most importantly that they got all their play sets in and that the team looked sharp for the first day back from the first day off of camp and he was pleased with that.
  • WR Russell Shepard didn’t look so good today, made a couple of gaffes.
  • TE Engram made a nice play, but in this current scheme his body type doesn’t look as beefy as a lot of the other WRs.
  • TE C.J. Conrad looks good and made a few nice plays today. He looks good blocking.
  • WR Reggie White is a big beefy fellow.
  • Rhett Ellison made a nice play up the middle.

A couple of notes. Sy and I have very tight schedules this year but each of us is committed to five camp reports. I did finally talk to him this evening about Wheeler but I’m going to let him address that. In the next two weeks, Dave will be at camp tomorrow, and I will be there on Friday. I think we will both be at camp together next Tuesday, August 6, and then we will have coverage that Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, August 11-13 and we will again reunite on August 13.

JULY 27, 2019 NEW YORK GIANTS TRAINING CAMP REPORT…
The New York Giants held their third full-team summer training camp practice on Saturday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The complete public training camp schedule is available at Giants.com.

GOLDEN TATE FACING 4-GAME SUSPENSION…
It was revealed on Saturday that New York Giants wide receiver Golden Tate is appealing a 4-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Performance Enhancing (PED) Substance policy. His appeal is currently scheduled to be heard during the first week of August. If Tate loses the appeal, he will miss the first four games of the regular-season. He will be able to continue to practice with the team this summer and play in the preseason.

Tate issued the following statement on Saturday:

This past April, during the off-season, my wife and I decided to see a specialist for fertility planning. I started the treatment prescribed to me and just days later I discovered it contained an ingredient that is on the league’s banned substance list. I immediately discontinued use, I reported the situation to the Independent Administrator of the NFL Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances, and I spoke with my coaches and general manager. I did all of this well before a failed test was even confirmed.

Per NFL protocol, an initial suspension was imminent, but myself and the Giants organization are confident in the fact, and eagerly await my appeal to put this behind us.

During the entirety of my 10 year career I have taken great pride in playing this game the right way, have been an ambassador for the NFL and have never had any issues with the league’s policy. The treatment this past April had no effect on the upcoming season, and I did not, and could not have undergone this treatment in April for any competitive advantage. I deeply appreciate the support from the New York Giants Organization, and will continue to hold the highest level of character and integrity, while being a leader in the locker room.

In respect to the team and my teammates I won’t be speaking on this again until after the appeal. I’m focusing on football, and will not let this be a distraction.

“I think he’s going to have an appeal,” said Head Coach Pat Shurmur before practice on Saturday. “I think he released a statement, so I really have nothing to add to that. We’ll just see what happens with it… When this situation arose, he’s been very honest with us.”

GIANTS SIGN AMBA ETTA-TAWO AND T.J. JONES…
The New York Giants have signed wide receivers Amba Etta-Tawo and T.J. Jones. To make room on the roster, the team placed wide receiver Corey Coleman on Injured Reserve and cut place kicker Joey Slye.

The 6’1”, 208-pound Etta-Tawo was originally signed as a rookie free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars after the 2017 NFL Draft. He has spent time on the Practice Squads of the Jaguars (2017), Kansas City Chiefs (2017), Giants (2017-2018), and Houston Texans (2018). Etta-Tawo also played for the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football in 2019.

The 6’0”, 190-pound Jones was originally drafted in the 6th-round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. In four seasons with the Lions, Jones played in 42 regular-season games with nine starts, catching 64 passes for 814 yards and four touchdowns. Jones also has experience returning both kickoffs and punts.

Coleman tore an ACL in one of his knees on Thursday. Coleman was originally drafted in the 1st round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. An explosive athlete but an injury-plagued bust in Cleveland, Coleman has also had brief stints with the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots in 2018. The Giants signed Coleman to the Practice Squad and then the 53-man roster in October 2018. He ended up playing in eight games with one start, finishing with five catches for 71 yards. Coleman’s primary contribution came on special teams as as kickoff returner (averaging 26 yards on 23 returns).

The Giants signed and waived Slye in May 2019, and then re-signed him in July 2019. Slye graduated from Virginia Tech and did not play pro football in 2018. As a senior, he converted on 15-of-22 field goal attempts (68 percent) and 37-of-37 extra point attempts.

INJURY REPORT…
Wide receivers Darius Slayton (hamstring), Brittan Golden (groin), and Alex Wesley (PUP List – unknown) did not practice on Saturday. Cornerbacks Sam Beal (groin) and Henre’ Toliver (unknown) also did not practice.

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard (fractured thumb) was limited to individual drills in practice, not catching any passes. “Hopefully in a couple weeks I get out of this deal (splint) and I will be able to catch the ball,” said Shepard on Saturday.

Linebacker Mark McLaurin (foot stepped on) left practice early.
