JULY 27, 2022 NEW YORK GIANTS TRAINING CAMP REPORT…
The New York Giants held their first summer training camp practice on Wednesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The training camp practice was open to the public for the first time since 2019.

DENNIS HICKEY TO SERVE AS UNOFFICIAL DIRECTOR OF COLLEGE SCOUTING…
General Manager Joe Schoen announced on Wednesday that Assistant Director of Player Personnel Dennis Hickey, who was hired by the team this offseason, will in effect serve as the director of college scouting without the title in 2022.

“We interviewed probably three or four candidates for (director of college scouting), and we’re just going to move forward without one for the season,” said Schoen. “Dennis Hickey will fill that role primarily for this year, and we’ll evaluate it after the year. But between him, (Director of Player Personnel) Tim (McDonnell), (Assistant General Manager) Brandon Brown, will kind of head up the personnel department. (Director of Pro Scouting) Chris Rossetti will be doing the pro department. All those guys are outstanding additions, all the new guys.”

Hickey has extensive NFL experience including serving as pro personnel assistant, college scout, director of college scouting, and director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996-2013) as well as general manager for the Miami Dolphins (2014-2015), and senior national scout for the Buffalo Bills (2017-2022).

ROSTER MOVES…
The Giants have signed offensive tackle Garrett McGhin and waived offensive tackle Kamaal Seymour.

The 26-year old, 6’6”, 302-pound McGhin was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Buffalo Bills after the 2019 NFL Draft. He has spent time with the Bills (2019, 2020),  Carolina Panthers (2019-2020), Jacksonville Jaguars (2020-2021), and New Jersey Generals (2022). McGhin has only played in two NFL games with no starts, both with the Panthers in 2019.

Seymour was just signed by the Giants yesterday. The 6’6”, 319-pound Seymour originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Las Vegas Raiders after the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent all of his rookie season on the Practice Squad of the Raiders and missed all of 2021 with an Achilles’ tendon injury. The Raiders waived him with a non-football injury in April.

INJURY REPORT…
The following players began training camp on injury lists:

  • Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) List: WR Sterling Shepard (Achilles), OC Nick Gates (leg), and OT Matt Peart (knee).
  • Reserve/Non-Football Injury (NFI) List: LB Azeez Ojulari (hamstring)

“Everybody is pretty much a full go besides guys that are on PUP or Azeez,” said Head Coach Brian Daboll before practice. “We will manage who we need to manage, but there’s no red jerseys, we are ready to go.”

TE Daniel Bellinger (quad) passed his physical and was activated off of the PUP List.

PRACTICE NOTES…

  • The starting defense to open practice was DL Leonard Williams, DL Dexter Lawrence, OLB Kavyon Thibodeaux, OLB Jihad Ward, ILB Blake Martinez, ILB Tae Crowder, CB Adoree’ Jackson, CB Aaron Robinson, CB Darnay Holmes, S Xavier McKinney, and S Julian Love.
  • When 11-on-11 drills began, Darrian Beavers replaced Martinez at inside linebacker.
  • CB Cor’Dale Flott broke up a pass in the end zone. Flott later prevented a touchdown pass intended for WR Robert Foster by shoving him out-of-bounds while he was the process of catching the ball.
  • CB Aaron Robinson knocked down a pass as well in 11-on-11 drills.
  • QB Daniel Jones scored on a quarterback draw in the first full-team, 11-on-11 session.
  • QB Daniel Jones hit RB Saquon Barkley for a touchdown, although OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux might have had a sack on the play.
  • QB Daniel Jones threw another touchdown strike to WR Kadarius Toney, who made an excellent catch, despite tight coverage from CB Aaron Robinson.
  • CB Darnay Holmes picked off a pass from QB Daniel Jones to RB Saquon Barkley in the red zone.
  • QB Daniel Jones threw a fade pass to WR Wan’Dale Robinson for a touchdown against S Xavier McKinney.
  • RB Matt Breida ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass from QB Tyrod Taylor.
  • QB Tyrod Taylor also threw touchdowns to WR David Sills, WR Richie James, and RB Antonio Williams.
  • QB Davis Webb threw touchdown passes to TE Ricky Seals-Jones, WR Austin Proehl, and WR Marcus Kemp.

    GIANTS HIRE FOUR NEW FACES TO PLAYER PERSONNEL DEPARTMENT…
    The New York Giants have officially announced that they have hired four new people to the team’s personnel department:

    • Chris Rossetti is the new director of pro scouting.
    • Dennis Hickey, as we previously reported, is the new assistant director of player personnel.
    • Mike Derice is a new national scout.
    • Scott Hamel, as we previously reported, is a new area scout (for the Southwest region).

    Rossetti has spent the previous seven seasons with the Miami Dolphins, first as a pro personnel assistant (2015), then as a pro scout (2016-2020), and finally as assistant director of pro scouting (2021). Before that, Rossetti spent three seasons (2012-2014) in the player personnel department of the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts.

    Hickey has extensive NFL experience including serving as pro personnel assistant, college scout, director of college scouting, and director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996-2013) as well as general manager for the Miami Dolphins (2014-2015), and senior national scout for the Buffalo Bills (2017-2022).

    Derice has worked with the Indianapolis Colts since 2012, mostly as an area scout with a focus on the Northeast region.

    Hamel has been a scout with the Chicago Bears since 2015 with experience as an area scout in the Midwest (2017-2020) and Southeast (2021) regions.

    The Giants fired Director of College Scouting Chris Pettit, Senior Personnel Executive Kyle O’Brien, Senior Pro Scouting Executive Ken Sternfeld, and Senior Pro Scout/Football Systems Analyst Matt Shauger last week.

    DANTE PETTIS SIGNS WITH BEARS…
    New York Giants unrestricted free agent wide receiver Dante Pettis has signed with the Chicago Bears. Pettis was signed to the Practice Squad in early September 2021 and the 53-man roster in October. He was then placed on Injured Reserve in early November with a shoulder injury. Pettis played in three games, with no starts, and finished with 10 catches for 87 yards and one touchdown.

    The 6’1”, 195-pound Pettis was originally drafted in the 2nd round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. The Giants claimed Pettis off of waivers from the 49ers in early November 2020. He played in the final two games of the season for the Giants, catching four passes for 76 yards and one touchdown.

    Giants Cut James Bradberry, Add New Faces to Front Office

    NEW YORK GIANTS CUT JAMES BRADBERRY…
    As had been anticipated for some time, the New York Giants have terminated the contract of cornerback James Bradberry in a cost-cutting move. Bradberry was scheduled to count $21.864 million against the 2022 NFL salary cap. But cutting him, the Giants save $10.136 million against the cap with $11.728 million in dead money.

    The Giants are now believed to be around $16.3 million under the cap, but the team needs around $12.8 million to sign the rookie class.

    The New York Post is reporting that General Manager Joe Schoen has tried for months to trade Bradberry. He apparently had a couple of deals worked out, but they were contingent on Bradberry agreeing to a new contract with the team acquiring him. No new deal could be agreed upon so Bradberry was released.

    Bradberry did not play as well in 2021 as he did in his first year with the Giants in 2020 when he made the Pro Bowl. Bradberry played in all 17 games with 16 starts (99 percent of all defensive snaps), and finished the season with 46 tackles, 17 pass defenses, four interceptions, and one fumble recovery. Those stats were comparable to his 2020 season, but Bradberry was not as consistently strong in coverage in 2021. He was also flagged five times. Bradberry was originally drafted in the 2nd round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Panthers.

    REPORTS – GIANTS ADD TWO TO FRONT OFFICE…
    While not officially announced, InsideTheLeague.com is reporting that the Giants have hired Dennis Hickey and Scott Hamel.

    Hickey has extensive NFL experience, including:

    • 2017-2022: senior college scout, Buffalo Bills
    • 2014-2015: general manager, Miami Dolphins
    • 2011-2013: director of player personnel, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    • 2004-2010: director of college scouting, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    • 1998-2003: college scout, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    • 1996-1997: pro personnel assistant, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

    The Bergen Record is reporting that Hickey will serve as the Giants’ new assistant director of player personnel. Hickey worked with General Manager Joe Schoen in Miami and Buffalo.

    Hamel has been a scout with the Chicago Bears since 2015. While his exact role is not yet known, The Bergen Record is reporting that Hamel will serve as an area scout for the Giants.
