JASON PIERRE-PAUL’S SEASON PROBABLY OVER AFTER SURGERY…
In a shocking development, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had surgery Wednesday morning to repair the groin/sports hernia injury he suffered during Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pierre-Paul is expected to miss at least six weeks. There is a chance Pierre-Paul could return if the Giants make the playoffs and win one or two playoff games.

“We wish JPP a speedy recovery, but we have to move on,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “You can’t expect one person to jump in and fill his shoes. He’s a very talented player. We’ll use all hands on deck.”

McAdoo was asked if the Giants would put him on season-ending Injured Reserve. “Too early to tell,” replied McAdoo. “We’re going to monitor. He just got out of surgery a little while ago. We’ll see how he feels and how he progresses.”

DECEMBER 7, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (core muscle), defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins (quadriceps), safety Nat Berhe (concussion), and wide receiver/returner Dwayne Harris (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday.

“They just want to make sure that I am full-go on Sunday, so it is really just taking it a day at a time and not really trying to push myself,” said Hankins.

Defensive end Owa Odighizuwa (knee), linebacker Mark Herzlich (concussion), cornerback Coty Sensabaugh (ribs), and left guard Justin Pugh (knee) practiced on a limited basis.

“I am feeling good,” said Pugh. “Obviously today was a little half and half, it wasn’t a full practice and tomorrow will be good to see, you get uppers on, get pads on, see how I am feeling, so that will be the true test… My knee is feeling great, so I have all intentions of going out and playing on Sunday. We just have to make sure that we are taking the right steps and like I keep saying, I feel like a broken record, making sure that we don’t have any setbacks, but every day I am feeling good, so it is solid.”

Running back Shane Vereen (tricep), who is currently on Injured Reserve, continued to practice.

“There’s a chance that we may have a package for Shane if he’s ready to go (against the Cowboys), said Head Coach Ben McAdoo.

JASON PIERRE-PAUL VISITS SURGEON ABOUT GROIN INJURY…
According to multiple press reports, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul visited a surgeon in Philadelphia on Tuesday regarding his groin injury. The New York Post is reporting that the team’s preliminary diagnosis is that Pierre-Paul did not suffer a sports hernia and his injury can be rehabbed and treated without surgery. The meeting with the surgeon hopefully will validate those initial findings. However, a couple of Pierre-Paul’s teammates did not think he would be able to play on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

GIANTS ADD DEFENSIVE END TO PRACTICE SQUAD…
The New York Giants have signed defensive end Jordan Williams to the Practice Squad. Williams was originally signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2015 NFL Draft. He has spent time with the Jets (2015) and Miami Dolphins (2015-2016).

PITTSBURGH STEELERS 24 – NEW YORK GIANTS 14…
The New York Giants were soundly beaten by the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-14 on Sunday at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With the loss, the Giants record fell to 8-4. The defeat all but officially ended the Giants division title hopes.

The problem for the Giants remains an offense that has struggled to score points all season. The Giants were shutout in the first half and scored a garbage touchdown very late in the game to make the score look more respectable than it actually was.

The Steelers out-gained the Giants in first downs (20 to 16), total net yards (389 to 234), net yards rushing (117 to 56), net yards passing (272 to 178), and time of possession (34:08 to 25:52). The Giants offense turned the football over twice and continued to struggle on third down (3-of-11, 36 percent). The Giants were also 0-for-3 on 4th down.

Not counting a kneel-down before intermission, the Giants had four offensive possessions in the first half. They resulted in a safety, interception, and two punts with the Giants only picking up five first downs and 91 net yards of offense. Meanwhile, the Steelers punted twice and managed three scoring drives (one touchdown and two field goals) in the first half.

Pittsburgh got on the board late in the 1st quarter when left tackle Ereck Flowers was called for a holding call in the end zone, resulting in a safety. After the free kick, the Steelers drove 38 yards in seven plays to set up a 44-yard field goal to go up 5-0.

A big turning point in the game came on the Giants third possession. New York had driven from their own 29-yard line to the Steelers 9-yard line. On 2nd-and-4, quarterback Eli Manning’s pass intended for tight end Larry Donnell was intercepted at the 2-yard line and returned 58 yards to the Giants 40-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger found wide receiver Antonio Brown for a 22-yard score. (The Steelers 2-point conversion attempt failed). The dramatic swing led to the Steelers now being up 11-0.

After a three-and-out by the Giants on their fourth, the Steelers ate up the rest of the first half with a 15-play, 64-yard drive that resulted in a 34-yard field goal. The Steelers converted on 3rd-and-17 on this possession. At the half, Pittsburgh led 14-0.

After both teams exchanged punts to start the 3rd quarter, the Giants drove deep into Steelers territory on their second possession of the second half. But Manning’s 4th-and-1 pass from the Steelers 3-yard line intended for tight end Will Tye was incomplete, and the Giants turned the football over on downs. Nevertheless, the Giants got the ball right back when linebacker Jonathan Casillas forced a fumble that cornerback Eli Apple recovered at the Steelers 17-yard line. Two plays later, Manning hit running back Rashad Jennings for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Despite everything that had gone wrong up to this point, the Giants found themselves only trailing 14-7.

Unfortunately, it was at this point that the defense gave up their longest drive of the game. Pittsburgh drove 88 yards in seven plays to take a 21-7 lead when Roethlisberger threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ladarius Green. The Giants went three-and-out on their ensuing possession but got the ball back late in the 3rd quarter when Apple intercepted Roethlisberger at the Giants 47-yard line. New York could not take advantage as Manning’s 4th-and-13 pass from the Steelers 35-yard line intended for wide receiver Sterling Shepard was intercepted at the 6-yard line.

The Steelers picked up one first down and punted. The Giants got the ball at midfield but again could not take advantage. Manning was sacked on 4th-and-9 from the Steelers 24-yard line. The Giants were now 0-for-3 on 4th down conversion attempts in the second half.

Pittsburgh ate up 5:17 on the ensuing possession, driving 48 yards in 11 plays to set up a 38-yard field goal with 1:39 left to play. After a 38-yard kickoff return by running back Bobby Rainey, the Giants drove 52 yards in five plays to put up a late touchdown on the scoreboard. Manning hit Shepard for the 1-yard score and a more respectable, but misleading, 24-14 final result.

Offensively, Eli Manning finished the game 24-of-39 for 195 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. He was sacked twice. His top target was Odell Beckham who caught 10 passes for 100 yards. No other player had more than 34 yards receiving. Running backs Paul Perkins and Rashad Jennings only rushed for 57 yards on 13 carries.

Defensively, the Giants allowed running back Le’Veon to rush for 118 yards and catch another 64 yards. Tight end Ladarius Green caught six passes for 110 yards. The Steelers had five scoring drives (two touchdowns and three field goals). Defensive tackle Damon Harrison led the team with nine tackles. Jonathan Casillas forced a fumble that Eli Apple recovered. Apple also had the team’s sole interception. Defensive end Olivier Vernon had both of the Giants two sacks and also had two tackles for losses. Safety Landon Collins defensed three passes.

INACTIVE LIST AND INJURY REPORT…
Inactive for the game were left guard Justin Pugh (knee), safety Nat Berhe (concussion), linebacker Mark Herzlich (concussion), defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa (knee), offensive lineman Adam Gettis, wide receiver Tavarres King, and quarterback Josh Johnson.

Injured in the game were defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (groin), defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins (bruised thigh), cornerback Coty Sensabaugh (ribs), and wide receiver/returner Dwayne Harris (ankle). Hankins returned to the game. Pierre-Paul will have an MRI on Monday.

ROSTER MOVES…
On Saturday, the New York Giants signed linebacker Deontae Skinner to the 53-man roster from the Practice Squad. To make room for Skinner, the team waived center Shane McDermott.

Skinner has spent time on both the Giants 53-man roster and Practice Squad this year. Skinner was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the New England Patriots after the 2014 NFL Draft. He has spent time with the Patriots (2014-2015) and Eagles (2015-2016), the latter waiving him in August.

McDermott has spent two stints on the team’s Practice Squad and was signed to the 53-man roster in November. McDermott originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2015 NFL Draft, but the Cowboys cut him in September that year. After a brief stint on the Panthers Practice Squad, the Giants signed McDermott to the Practice Squad in November 2015.

NOVEMBER 30, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
The New York Giants held a jog-thru practice on Wednesday. Safety Nat Berhe (concussion), linebacker Mark Herzlich (concussion), and defensive end Owa Odighizuwa (knee) did not participate.

Left guard Justin Pugh (knee), offensive lineman Brett Jones (calf), offensive lineman Marshall Newhouse (knee), and wide receiver/returner Dwayne Harris (wrist) practiced on a limited basis.

“I think it depends how I come in tomorrow,” Pugh said. “I feel like tomorrow, if I can do more at practice, we’ll see how it goes from there. My goal is just to feel good every day, and keep building off that. And I think we’re heading in the right direction. I’m going to be back sooner or later.”

Although he currently remains on Injured Reserve, running back Shane Vereen returned to practice on Wednesday. Vereen was placed on IR in late September after suffering a triceps injury that required surgery. The Giants now have 21 days to activate Vereen to the 53-man roster, or his season will end on Injured Reserve.

“It was good to get him back out here in the mix with the team,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “He caught some balls…When (the medical staff) deem him ready, we’ll take a look at bringing him back.”

“Physically, I feel good. If it was just up to how I felt like, then I would have been back, but there is a lot that goes into it and we have to be smart,” said Vereen.

GIANTS SIGN SAFETY TO THE PRACTICE SQUAD…
The New York Giants have signed safety Christian Bryant to the Practice Squad. Bryant was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams. The Rams waived him in September 2016. He then spent time on both the Practice Squad and active roster of the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals waived him on Monday. Bryant has played in 11 regular-season games with no starts. Bryant lacks ideal size and speed, but he a good athlete and an aggressive player with fine intangibles.

JASON PIERRE-PAUL NAMED “NFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK”…
New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has been named “NFC Defensive Player of the Week” for his performance against the Cleveland Browns last Sunday. In that game, Pierre-Paul was credited with seven tackles, three sacks, three QB hits, three tackles for losses, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery that he returned for a 43-yard touchdown.

This is the third time this year a New York Giants defensive player has won the award. Safety Landon Collins earned it twice earlier this season. This is Pierre-Paul’s fourth “NFC Defensive Player of the Week” award in his career. Only linebacker Lawrence Taylor (9) and defensive end Michael Strahan (5) have more in team history.

ORLEANS DARKWA TO IR, ERIC PINKINS TO 53-MAN ROSTER…
The New York Giants have placed running back Orleans Darkwa on Injured Reserve with a lower leg injury. The team filled his roster spot by signing safety/linebacker Eric Pinkins from the Practice Squad.

Darkwa played in 10 games with two starts for the Giants in 2016. He carries the ball 30 times for 111 yards (3.7 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 12 yards. Darkwa was originally signed by the Miami Dolphins as a rookie free agent after the 2014 NFL Draft. He played in four games in September before being waived in October and signed to the team’s Practice Squad. The Giants signed him off of Miami’s Practice Squad in November 2014.

Pinkins was signed to the Practice Squad in October 2016. Pinkins was originally drafted in the 6th round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, who moved him to linebacker. Pinkins was waived by the Seahawks in September 2016. He has played in six regular-season NFL games with no starts. Pinkins has a nice combination of size and speed, but his instincts have been questioned.

NEW YORK GIANTS 27 – CLEVELAND BROWNS 13…
The New York Giants won their sixth game in a row on Sunday by defeating the winless Cleveland Browns 27-13 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. With the victory, the Giants improved their overall record to 8-3, two games behind the first-place Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East.

In a game that was close until the 4th quarter, the Browns out-gained the Giants in first downs (21 to 13), total net yards (343 to 296), net yards passing (285 to 192), and time of possession (33:51 to 26:09). But the Giants out-rushed the Browns (104 to 58) won the turnover battle (3 to 1), and scored on defense. And while Cleveland was 1-of-3 (33 percent) in red zone opportunities, the Giants were a perfect 2-of-2 (100 percent). The Giants did commit nine penalties for 100 yards.

Both teams struggled offensively for much of the first half as the score remained 0-0 until midway through the 2nd quarter. The Giants first four possessions resulted in five first downs, 65 net yards, and four punts. Meanwhile, the Browns first four possessions resulted in three first downs, 58 net yards, three punts, and a fumble. Defensive tackle Damon Harrison forced running back Isaiah Crowell to fumble, and the loose ball was recovered by linebacker Devon Kennard at the Browns 31-yard line. After an 18-yard pass from quarterback Eli Manning to wide receiver Roger Lewis, Manning then found wide receiver Dwayne Harris for a 13-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

The Giants defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing Browns possession but Cleveland got the ball right back when running back Bobby Rainey muffed the punt, giving the Browns the ball at the New York 30-yard line. Despite allowing Cleveland to convert on 4th-and-1 and to drive to the 2-yard line, the defense held and the Browns were forced to settle for a 20-yard field goal.

The Giants extended their lead to 14-3 late in the 2nd quarter as New York drove 69 yards in four plays and just 30 seconds. While two passing plays resulted in incompletions, Manning found wide receivers Victor Cruz for 37 yards and Odell Beckham for 32 yards and the score on the other two plays. However, with 1:13 to go before halftime, the Browns responded with an 8-play, 68 yard drive to set up a 25-yard field goal as time expired. At the half, the Giants led 14-6.

Like the start of the game, both teams struggled offensive at the start of the second half. New York’s first four possessions resulted in one first down, 32 net yards, and four punts. (Beckham had a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown erased by a holding penalty on linebacker Mark Herzlich). Cleveland’s first five possessions resulted in four first downs, 89 net yards, four punts, and a fumble. With just over 11 minutes to go in the game, defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins sacked quarterback Josh McCown, forcing a fumble that was returned 43 yards for a touchdown by defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. Place kicker Robbie Gould missed the extra point attempt and the Giants led 20-6.

Cleveland quickly tightened the game again by driving 75 yards in five plays. McCown found wide receiver Corey Coleman for a 21-yard touchdown to cut the score to 20-13 with 8:17 left to play.

The Giants pulled away on their ensuing possession. A 41-yard pass from Manning to Beckham followed by a 22-yard gain on an end-around by wideout Sterling Shepard moved the ball to the Browns 6-yard line. Three plays later, Manning hit Beckham on 3rd-and-goal for a 4-yard touchdown.

The final two Browns drives ended with a turnover on downs at the Giants 40-yard line and a fumble forced by Pierre-Paul on a sack. Defensive end Kerry Wynn recovered the fumble to seal the game.

Offensively, Manning completed 15-of-27 passes for 194 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no interceptions. Odell Beckham was the only player to catch more than two passes, as he had six receptions for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Rashad Jennings rushed for 55 yards on 15 carries and Paul Perkins rushed for 29 yards on nine carries.

Defensively, the Giants accrued seven sacks, 11 quarterback hits, eight tackles for losses, five pass defenses, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. Damon Harrison led the team with nine tackles, and also forced a fumble. Jason Pierre-Paul had seven tackles, three sacks, three tackles for losses, a forced fumble, and a fumble returned for a touchdown. Defensive end Olivier Vernon was credited with four tackles, 1.5 sacks, five quarterback hits, and two tackles for losses. Johnathan Hankins had three tackles, 1.5 sacks, two quarterback hits, and forced one fumble. Cornerback Janoris Jenkins had five tackles, one sack, two tackles for losses, and two pass defenses. Devon Kennard and Kerry Wynn recovered fumbles.

INACTIVE LIST AND INJURY REPORT…
Inactive for the game were left guard Justin Pugh (knee), offensive lineman Brett Jones (calf), offensive lineman Marshall Newhouse (knee), wide receiver Tavarres King, quarterback Josh Johnson, defensive tackle Jay Bromley, and cornerback Leon Hall.

Safety Nat Berhe and linebacker Mark Herzlich both suffered concussions in the game. This is the second time Berhe has suffered a concussion this year. Wide receiver Odell Beckham (thumb), defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa (knee), and cornerback Janoris Jenkins (unknown) all left the game with injuries but returned. NOVEMBER 25, 2016 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Offensive guard Justin Pugh (knee), offensive lineman Brett Jones (calf), and offensive lineman Marshall Newhouse (knee) have all been officially ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

“(Pugh) had a slight setback,” said Head Coach Ben McAdoo. “He got sore. He had a little setback and we’ll wait to see where he is next week.”

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (knee), wide receiver Roger Lewis, Jr. (concussion), offensive lineman Adam Gettis (calf), and running back Orleans Darkwa (lower leg) are “questionable” for the game.

“Jason, he would have been limited today if we would have practiced,” said McAdoo.

“Yes, I’m playing on Sunday,” Pierre-Paul said. “I’ll be out there on Sunday.”

“(Gettis) practiced this week, he’s fighting through some soreness, but we’ll see how he does tomorrow,” said McAdoo.

Wide receiver/returner Dwayne Harris (wrist) is “probable” for the game.

MONDAY BEN MCADOO CONFERENCE CALL…
New York Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo addressed the media by conference call on Monday to discuss the team’s 22-16 victory over the Chicago Bears:

McAdoo: It was exciting to see the men in the locker room respond at halftime; 13-0 in the second half was big for us. We won the turnover battle, four penalties, and we held them to 16 points. If we do that, we are going to have a chance to be successful in a lot of games.

Defense, what I thought we did well: 101 yards, zero points in the second half, 4-of-12 on third down, a combination of 10 tackles for loss and sacks, and we ended the game with an interception in the two-minute. What we need to work on: substitution error on the goal line, can’t have it. We need to cut down on the explosive gains that are assignment related.

Offense, what we did well: the first five drives, three touchdowns and a field goal and really the other drive, if we don’t have the penalty, we were moving the ball there as well. Zero ‘gives’ for the first time this year and especially in the elements, that was big for us. We showed physicality running the football and we were at our best on fourth down when we needed it. What we need to work on: last five drives, zero points to show. It seemed like we were pressing at times and there were too many technique errors.

Our special teams, what we did well: the 46-yard kick return to start the half set the table, the punt game overall was positive and at 3:13 in the fourth quarter, the 45-yard net with zero yards on the return and the 10-yard penalty tacked on was big for us there in the punt game. What we need to work on: can’t have the substitution error on the field goal, gave up a 40-yard kickoff return, the punt return was a muff and kickoff return decision making has to improve.

Where we go from here, we have to keep focusing on improving. We have to clean our house, we have some sloppy football out there, but it is all correctable.

Q: Any expectations that Brett Jones, Roger Lewis or Marshall Newhouse will practice?

A: Roger is in the protocol. Jones, we will take a look at and see what he can do on Wednesday.

Q: What about Marshall?

A: Marshall went back into the ball game, but again, we will have to take a look at him on Wednesday as well.

Q: What about Justin Pugh?

A: He was moving around a little bit at the end of last week and, again, we will see how he looks on Wednesday. It is too early to tell.

Q: Did Odell hurt his hand on that low pass in the dirt?

A: He may have caught a finger in the turf, stubbed it a little bit. I am not 100 percent certain.

Q: What did you see on Robbie Gould’s two missed PATs. He was talking about the wind, not making an excuse, but was there something off about his technique?

A: We need to make those. You talked to Robbie yesterday. I think he hit the nail on the head and we are all on the same page there.

Q: You mentioned ‘pressing’ on those last five offensive series. Can you kind of expand on what you mean by that?

A: Just too many technique errors. We need to do what we are supposed to do, when we are supposed to do it, as well as we possibly can, all the time. We have to be on the same page.

Q: In retrospect, do you feel like your play calling got a little too conservative once you took the lead?

A: No.

Q: Why not?

A: I thought we were running the ball physically. I thought we had some opportunities to convert and complete the ball. I am fine with the way the game was called.

Q: How did you think the offensive line held up?

A: I thought the offensive line – we had zero sacks, the quarterback did take a couple shots, but I thought with all the moving parts throughout the whole week and the short week of preparation, I thought they came out and played physical in the run game.

Q: How would you describe Victor Cruz’s role in this offense?

A: He is one of the three starting receivers out there and we had some guys nicked up and he played, what did he play, 60 plays. He played a lot of football for us yesterday.

Q: Victor doesn’t get a lot of passes in his direction, but when he does, he makes them count.

A: It was tough to complete the ball outside the numbers yesterday. It was a challenge. I thought taking care of the football in those types of conditions with the winds and the gust, really the challenge was that the winds weren’t sustained. They were gusts so you didn’t know when they were going to hit or when they weren’t going to hit. I thought taking care of the ball was encouraging.

Q: Obviously with Landon Collins the picks are apparent, but overall, can you give us a sense of how well he’s playing. Would you say he’s playing at an all-pro level?

A: I can’t really speak for Landon. I think he’s playing at a high level and the teams that we see…I don’t get a chance to watch everybody in the league so I don’t have an opinion on whether he’s playing at an all-pro level, but I know he’s playing at a high level for us. He’s still learning, he’s still growing, he’s still a young player and he’s preparing well and he’s very productive.

Q: When they had the penalty on the second to last play, was that something you guys could have declined and if so, why didn’t you?

A: Any time Jay Cutler has the ball, the farther you can back him up at the end of the ball game, the better. If anyone can cut through the wind and get one in the end zone, it’s Jay.

Q: Why give him an extra chance then for five yards?

A: Felt like it was the best decision for our team.

Q: What went into the decision to have Larry Donnell inactive?

A: We were short on linemen and we wanted to make sure we had enough guys to finish the game. It’s easier to move a lineman to tight end than it is from tight end to lineman.

Q: Big picture, obviously you’re a first year head coach, when you went into this, did you imagine you could have this kind of success this early on?

A: We haven’t accomplished anything yet. The highs are high and the lows are low and you’re going have to put out three dumpster fires a day. Other than that, you need to focus on your preparation and get ready for the next opponent.

Q: They say that winning cures everything; how do you view the attitude or atmosphere around the building the last few weeks?

A: I think guys did a nice job early in the week last week focusing on their preparation. They seem positive, they seem hungry to get better and that’s encouraging moving forward.

Q: You said that you haven’t accomplished anything yet, but of course you guys do have seven wins; what do you mean by that?

A: Seven wins doesn’t get you very far. We need to keep stacking success.

Q: You said yesterday that a road trip would be good for the team; is that something that a team misses a little bit? The traveling and the camaraderie?

A: It’s an exciting week for our guys. Haven’t been on the road in a little while, so anytime you get a chance to get on the road and bond and spend some time together, some quality time together that way, your team has a chance to grow and get closer.

Q: A report out of Cleveland was that Cody Kessler may have gone into concussion protocol. How difficult does that make your preparation for this week not knowing what quarterback they might put in.

A: They’re all three very different players, so of course that will be a challenge but we have to be ready for it.

Q: Do you do work on all three as a result?

A: We have yet to go into the meeting. I have a meeting here in about seven minutes and that’s something we have to discuss.
