New Running Back Coach for Giants; Brian Daboll Hires Son

NEW RUNNING BACK COACH FOR GIANTS…
Last week, the Indianapolis Colts hired DeAndre Smith, who served as the running backs coach for the New York Giants in 2022. It is not yet publicly known what role Smith will serve on the Colts’ staff.

Media sources reported on Thursday that the Giants replaced Smith with Jeff Nixon, who served as Assistant Head Coach-Offense for the Carolina Panthers in 2022. The 48-year old Nixon was the running backs coach for the Panthers in 2020 and 2021. He had interviewed for the offensive coordinator vacancy with the Dallas Cowboys earlier this month. Nixon also worked with Brian Daboll with the Miami Dolphins in 2011 when Daboll was the team’s offensive coordinator and Nixon the running backs coach.

BRIAN DABOLL HIRES SON…
New York Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll has hired one of his sons, Christian Daboll, as an offensive assistant coach. Christian has served as a student coach at Penn State University for the last three and a half years. Last season, he signaled in the plays during games.

DAVIS WEBB BECOMES QB COACH FOR BRONCOS…
Davis Webb, who served as the third-string quarterback for the New York Giants in 2022, has been hired by the Denver Broncos as the team’s quarterback coach. Webb had spent the entire season on the Giants’ Practice Squad, but started the regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.

OCTOBER 28, 2022 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
WR Kenny Golladay (knee), TE Daniel Bellinger (eye), RT Evan Neal (knee), LG Ben Bredeson (knee), OLB Oshane Ximines (quad), and CB Cor’Dale Flott (calf) did not practice on Friday. All six players have been officially ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

ESPN is reporting that “Bellinger underwent successful surgery to correct fractures on lower window of eye socket and damage to septum, per source. Player hopes to return in 2-6 weeks, but separate source says 4-6 weeks could be more reasonable, depending on healing.”

OL Tyre Phillips (toe), DL Leonard Williams (elbow), and S Jason Pinnock (foot) were limited in practice. All three players are “questionable” for Sunday’s game.

SEPTEMBER 30, 2022 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), DL Leonard Williams (knee), CB Cor’Dale Flott (calf), and CB Nick McCloud (hamstring) did not practice on Friday. All five have officially been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

When asked if the team had considered putting Toney on Injured Reserve, Head Coach Brian Daboll replied, “We haven’t talked about that, (General Manager) Joe (Schoen) and I. He’s getting better. He’s rehabbing, so hopefully we’ll see him out here as soon as we can.”

OLB Jihad Ward (knee), CB Aaron Robinson (appendix), and CB Justin Layne (concussion) fully practiced. All three are expected to play on Sunday.

TheAthletic is reporting that center Nick Gates will be activated off of the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List next week. Once activated, Gates will have up to three weeks to practice with the team without counting against the 53-man roster. Once that timeframe ends, he either must be added to the roster or revert to the PUP for the rest of the season. Gates suffered a serious, career-threatening lower leg injury in Week 2 of last season requiring multiple surgeries.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2022 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), CB Aaron Robinson (appendicitis), and CB Nick McCloud (hamstring) did not practice on Friday. All three have been officially ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.

WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring), OL Devery Hamilton (illness), OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux (knee), OLB Azeez Ojulari (calf), and S Jason Pinnock (shoulder) were limited in practice. Pinnock has been ruled out of Sunday’s game. Thibodeaux and Ojulari are “doubtful” for the game. Toney is “questionable” and Hamilton is expected to play.

On Toney, Head Coach Brian Daboll said before practice, “He was added back to the injury report. We’ll see where he’s at today. He practiced (on Thursday), participated in some team periods. But his hamstring tightened up, so that’s why he’s back on the injury report… We’ll see (if he can play on Sunday). We’ll come out here today and see what he can do today and see where we’re at.”

OC Jon Feliciano (lower leg) and S Dane Belton (clavicle) fully practiced. Both are expected to play.

NEW YORK GIANTS ANNOUNCE SEVEN POSITION COACHES…
The New York Giants have officially announced that they have hired the following seven position coaches:

  • Quarterbacks Coach Shea Tierney
  • Running Backs Coach DeAndre Smith
  • Wide Receivers Coach Mike Groh
  • Tight Ends Coach Andy Bischoff
  • Offensive Line Coach Bobby Johnson
  • Assistant Offensive Line Coach Tony Sparano, Jr.

“They’re all intelligent, dependable, good character, team-first people who are experts in their subject matter, can teach well and explain the details of their positions,” Head Coach Brian Daboll said. “I think there’s an important part of developing a staff and bringing a staff together in terms of personality and fit, so we’re happy with the guys that we’ve hired to this point. I’d say we’ve taken our time making decisions and really being methodical with our approach. We weren’t going to rush anything. Just take each case day by day.

“I think what you try to do when you’re putting together a staff, whether that be an offensive staff in a smaller form or the entire staff, you try to put together a group of people that will complement one another, whether that’s experience, whether that’s energy, whether that’s detail, whether that’s passion. You don’t want to have a cookie cutter approach and hire everybody that’s exactly the same. I think that you have to offset blind spots.”

LAURA YOUNG NAMED DIRECTOR OF COACHING OPERATIONS…
The Giants have announced that Laura Young will be the team’s director of coaching operations. She becomes the first female in Giants’ history to be considered a member of the coaching staff. According to the team’s press release, Young will be “involved in every aspect of football operations, including coordinating/organizing practice, as well as game day operations.”

“She’ll have her hands all over the organization in terms of the coaching side,” Head Coach Brian Daboll said. “She’s with me every step of the way. She’s a rock star really, and I feel very fortunate that I get to work with her each day because she provides just a tremendous amount of support and value to really everyone, but myself the most, I would say. She’s smart, there’s really not a job she can’t do and a job she won’t do. That’s her mindset. Very humble, egoless, but driven, smart. I just think she’s the best.”
