REPORT – GIANTS INTERVIEWING JASON GARRETT FOR OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR…
The NFL Network is reporting that new New York Giants Head Coach Joe Judge is interviewing former Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett for the team’s vacant offensive coordinator position. The Cowboys decided not to renew Garrett’s contract when it expired on Tuesday. Ironically, the Giants had expressed interest in interviewing Garrett for their head-coaching vacancy before hiring Judge.

The 53-year old Garrett served as Dallas’ head coach since 2011, accruing a 85–67 (.559) regular-season record and a 2-3 (.400) post-season record. Before that he served in other roles for the Cowboys, including interim head coach (2010), assistant head coach and offensive coordinator (2008-2010), and offensive coordinator (2007). He was also quarterbacks coach of the Miami Dolphins (2005-2006).

Garrett also was a well-traveled, journeyman back-up quarterback who spent time with five NFL teams, including the New York Giants (2000-2003).

REPORT – JOE JUDGE INTERVIEWED MIKE SHULA FOR OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR…
ESPN is reporting that new Head Coach Joe Judge interviewed Mike Shula for the team’s vacant offensive coordinator position on Monday. Shula served in the same capacity for the Giants under recently-fired Head Coach Pat Shurmur in 2018-2019. However, Shula did not call the plays under Shurmur, who handled those responsibilities himself.

The 54-year old Shula has also been offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (2013-2017), quarterbacks coach for the Panthers (2011-2012), quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2007-2010), head coach at the University of Alabama (2003-2006), quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins (2000-2002), offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996-1999), tight ends coach for the Chicago Bears (1993-1995), coaches assistant for the Dolphins (1991-1992), quarterbacks coach for the Buccaneers (1990), and offensive assistant for the Buccaneers ( 1988-1989).

REPORTS – PATRICK GRAHAM ALSO DESIGNATED ASSISTANT HEAD COACH…
Multiple sources are reporting that Patrick Graham will not only be the team’s new defensive coordinator, but will also be given the title of assistant head coach. The 40-year old Graham served with new Head Coach Joe Judge on the New England Patriots staff from 2012 to 2015 until he joined former Head Coach Ben McAdoo’s staff with the Giants in 2016-2017. Graham’s first year as a defensive coordinator was 2019, when the undermanned Miami defense finished 30th in the NFL in yards allowed and 32nd in points allowed.

Before becoming Miami’s defensive coordinator, Graham was the defensive run game coordinator and inside linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers (2018), defensive line coach for the New York Giants (2016-2017), linebackers coach for the New England Patriots (2011, 2014-2015), defensive line coach for the New England Patriots (2012-2013), defensive assistant for the New England Patriots (2010), coaching assistant for New England Patriots (2009), defensive line coach for the University of Toledo (2009), graduate assistant for the University of Notre Dame (2007-2008), tight ends coach for University of Richmond (2005-2006), defensive line coach for the University of Richmond (2004), and a graduate assistant for Wagner College (2002-2003).

REPORTS – NEW YORK GIANTS ASSISTANT COACHES NOT BEING RETAINED…
According to various reports, the following New York Giants assistant coaches who served under former Head Coach Pat Shurmur will not be retained:

  • Defensive Line Coach Gary Emanuel
  • Inside Linebackers Coach Bill McGovern
  • Outside Linebackers Coach Mike Dawson
  • Defensive Backs Coach Everett Withers
  • Assistant Defensive Backs Coach Henry Baker
  • Offensive Assistant Ryan Roeder

In addition, Tight Ends Coach Lunda Wells has also accepted the same position with the Dallas Cowboys.

DEXTER LAWRENCE NAMED TO PFW ALL-ROOKIE TEAM…

Lawrence started all 16 games, playing 63 percent of all defensive snaps, and accruing 38 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1 pass defense, and 1 forced fumble. JABRILL PEPPERS TO IR, KAREEM MARTIN TO 53-MAN ROSTER…
The New York Giants have placed safety Jabrill Peppers (back) and linebacker Chris Peace (knee) on Injured Reserve, effectively ending their seasons. To fill those roster vacancies, the Giants activated linebacker Kareem Martin from Injured Reserve and signed safety Sean Chandler from the Practice Squad.

Peppers was originally drafted in the 1st round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He was traded to the Giants as part of the Odell Beckham deal to the Browns in March 2019. Before suffering a transverse process fracture in his back in the game against the Chicago Bears in late November, Peppers started 11 games and was credited with 76 tackles, five pass defenses, one interception that he returned for a touchdown, and three forced fumbles. He also returned one kickoff and four punts.

The Giants claimed Peace off of waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers in September 2019. He played in four games with the Giants before injuring his knee. The 6’2”, 250-pound Peace was signed by the Chargers as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Giants placed Kareem Martin on Injured Reserve in September 2019 with a knee injury that he suffered in the regular-season opener. The Giants signed Martin as an unrestricted free agent from the Arizona Cardinals in March 2018. Though not a standout in 2018, Martin has his most productive season as a pro, playing in a 16 games with seven starts, and finishing with 48 tackles (twice as much as his previous high), 1.5 sacks, and 2 pass defenses. The 6’6”, 272-pound Martin was originally drafted in the 3rd round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Cardinals as a defensive end. The Cardinals moved him to linebacker after his rookie season.

Chandler was on the 53-man roster in September and October and spent most of November on the Practice Squad. The Giants originally signed Chandler as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2018 NFL Draft. Chandler made the team and played in all 16 games with no starts. He finished 2018 with 18 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 pass defense. Before he was cut in early November, Chandler played in nine games with no starts, accruing just five tackles.

Patrick Omameh, New York Giants (October 7, 2018)

Patrick Omameh – © USA TODAY Sports

NEW YORK GIANTS OFFENSIVE LINE SHAKEUP…
According to multiple media reports, John Greco will be moved from center to right guard to replace Patrick Omameh in the starting line-up. Spencer Pulley will now start at center.

The Giants claimed Pulley off of waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers in September 2018. The 25-year old, 6’4, 308-pound Pulley was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Chargers after the 2016 NFL Draft. Spencer started all 16 regular-season games for the Chargers in 2017 at center.

Offensive line coach Hal Hunter telegraphed these moves earlier in the day. “(Pulley has) doing a great job,” said Hunter. “He’s really smart. The first thing I did when we got him I called Phillip Rivers to ask about him and Phillip gave me great insight into the guy and so based on that it helped me coach the guy a little bit. He’s tough and he’s athletic. I think he’s got a good grasp of the offense and I think he is pushing toward perhaps maybe being one of the first five. We’ll see what happens as the season goes on.

“Greco’s done a great job filling in. He did the same thing for me in Cleveland. He was a guard that actually was forced into playing center when our center got hurt in Cleveland. That’s kind of what’s happened here. He’s a guard that’s been forced into center play and he’s been really solid at the center position these last couple of weeks.”

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Right guard Patrick Omameh (knee) and wide receiver Jawill Davis (concussion) did not practice on Saturday. Omameh was added to the injury list on Saturday and he is officially listed as “questionable” for the game against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night. Davis has already been ruled out of the game.

“Yeah, (Omameh) kind of got his leg tangled up yesterday in practice so we’ll just see how it responds here overnight,” said Head Coach Pat Shurmur. “We’ll just have to see.”

Wide receiver Russell Shepard (neck) practiced on a limited basis and is “questionable” for the game.

Tight end Evan Engram (knee), tight end Rhett Ellison (foot), left tackle Nate Solder (neck), and linebacker Olivier Vernon (ribs) fully practiced. All four are expected to play.

DICK MODZELEWSKI PASSES AWAY…
Dick Modzelewski, who played eight years with the New York Giants at defensive tackle from 1956-1963, died on Friday at the age of 87. Modzelewski also served as defensive coordinator of the Giants in 1978. As a player Modzelewski played in six NFL Championship games with the Giants.

NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT – OLIVIER VERNON RULED OUT…
Not practicing on Friday due to injury were linebacker Olivier Vernon (high ankle sprain) and linebacker Tae Davis (hamstring). Both players have been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“It’s safe to say (Vernon) won’t make it this week,” said Head Coach Pat Shurmur. “We’ll just worry about it week to week. He’s making great progress, so we’ll just have to see…We’re going to play with the guys that are healthy and we’ll see. Obviously you’d like to have OV on the field.”

Linebacker Lorenzo Carter (illness) fully practiced and is expected to play on Sunday.
