Giants Consider Jason Garrett and Mike Shula for Offensive Coordinator

REPORT – GIANTS INTERVIEWING JASON GARRETT FOR OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR…
The NFL Network is reporting that new New York Giants Head Coach Joe Judge is interviewing former Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett for the team’s vacant offensive coordinator position. The Cowboys decided not to renew Garrett’s contract when it expired on Tuesday. Ironically, the Giants had expressed interest in interviewing Garrett for their head-coaching vacancy before hiring Judge.

The 53-year old Garrett served as Dallas’ head coach since 2011, accruing a 85–67 (.559) regular-season record and a 2-3 (.400) post-season record. Before that he served in other roles for the Cowboys, including interim head coach (2010), assistant head coach and offensive coordinator (2008-2010), and offensive coordinator (2007). He was also quarterbacks coach of the Miami Dolphins (2005-2006).

Garrett also was a well-traveled, journeyman back-up quarterback who spent time with five NFL teams, including the New York Giants (2000-2003).

REPORT – JOE JUDGE INTERVIEWED MIKE SHULA FOR OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR…
ESPN is reporting that new Head Coach Joe Judge interviewed Mike Shula for the team’s vacant offensive coordinator position on Monday. Shula served in the same capacity for the Giants under recently-fired Head Coach Pat Shurmur in 2018-2019. However, Shula did not call the plays under Shurmur, who handled those responsibilities himself.

The 54-year old Shula has also been offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (2013-2017), quarterbacks coach for the Panthers (2011-2012), quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2007-2010), head coach at the University of Alabama (2003-2006), quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins (2000-2002), offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996-1999), tight ends coach for the Chicago Bears (1993-1995), coaches assistant for the Dolphins (1991-1992), quarterbacks coach for the Buccaneers (1990), and offensive assistant for the Buccaneers ( 1988-1989).

REPORTS – PATRICK GRAHAM ALSO DESIGNATED ASSISTANT HEAD COACH…
Multiple sources are reporting that Patrick Graham will not only be the team’s new defensive coordinator, but will also be given the title of assistant head coach. The 40-year old Graham served with new Head Coach Joe Judge on the New England Patriots staff from 2012 to 2015 until he joined former Head Coach Ben McAdoo’s staff with the Giants in 2016-2017. Graham’s first year as a defensive coordinator was 2019, when the undermanned Miami defense finished 30th in the NFL in yards allowed and 32nd in points allowed.

Before becoming Miami’s defensive coordinator, Graham was the defensive run game coordinator and inside linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers (2018), defensive line coach for the New York Giants (2016-2017), linebackers coach for the New England Patriots (2011, 2014-2015), defensive line coach for the New England Patriots (2012-2013), defensive assistant for the New England Patriots (2010), coaching assistant for New England Patriots (2009), defensive line coach for the University of Toledo (2009), graduate assistant for the University of Notre Dame (2007-2008), tight ends coach for University of Richmond (2005-2006), defensive line coach for the University of Richmond (2004), and a graduate assistant for Wagner College (2002-2003).

REPORTS – NEW YORK GIANTS ASSISTANT COACHES NOT BEING RETAINED…
According to various reports, the following New York Giants assistant coaches who served under former Head Coach Pat Shurmur will not be retained:

  • Defensive Line Coach Gary Emanuel
  • Inside Linebackers Coach Bill McGovern
  • Outside Linebackers Coach Mike Dawson
  • Defensive Backs Coach Everett Withers
  • Assistant Defensive Backs Coach Henry Baker
  • Offensive Assistant Ryan Roeder

In addition, Tight Ends Coach Lunda Wells has also accepted the same position with the Dallas Cowboys.

DEXTER LAWRENCE NAMED TO PFW ALL-ROOKIE TEAM…
The Professional Football Writers of America (PFW) have named defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence to their 2019 All-Rookie Team. Lawrence started all 16 games, playing 63 percent of all defensive snaps, and accruing 38 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1 pass defense, and 1 forced fumble. The Giants drafted Lawrence in the 1st round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

DECEMBER 27, 2019 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Right tackle Mike Remmers (concussion) and tight end Scott Simonson (concussion) did not practice on Friday. Both have officially been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tight end Rhett Ellison (concussion/non-contact), offensive lineman Nick Gates (shoulder), linebacker Alec Ogletree (back), cornerback Deandre Baker (knee), cornerback Sam Beal (shoulder), and cornerback Corey Ballentine (back) were limited in practice. Ellison will not play on Sunday. Ogletree, Beal, and Ballentine are officially “questionable” for the game. Gates and Baker are expected to play.

Wide receiver Darius Slayton (knee) and linebacker Lorenzo Carter (knee) fully practiced. Both are expect to play.

GIANTS PROMOTE CHRIS SLAYTON TO 53-MAN ROSTER; RHETT ELLISON TO IR…
The New York Giants have signed nose tackle Chris Slayton to the 53-man roster from the Practice Squad. To make room for  Slayton, the team placed Rhett Ellison (concussion) on Injured Reserve.

The Giants drafted Slayton in the 7th round of the 2019 NFL Draft and re-signed him to the Practice Squad in September.

Ellison will miss the last six games of the season, having suffered a concussion against the Jets in November. He finished the year with just 18 catches for 167 yards and one touchdown. Ellison was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Vikings. The Giants signed Ellison as an unrestricted free agent in March 2017. In 2017 and 2018, Ellison averaged 25 catches and 254 yards per season for the Giants, starting 26 of the 30 games he played in.

SAQUON BARKLEY NAMED “NFC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK”…
New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley has been named “NFC Offensive Player of the Week” for his performance last Sunday against the Washington Redskins. In that game, Barkley established a new Giants’ record with 279 yards from scrimmage in a single contest. He rushed for 189 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and caught four passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Barkley’s 279 yards from scrimmage were the highest total by an NFL player in a game this season. He is only the fifth player with at least 275 scrimmage yards and both a rushing and receiving touchdown in a single game since 1970.

NOVEMBER 22, 2019 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Tight end Evan Engram (foot) and tight end Rhett Ellison (concussion) did not practice on Friday. Both have been officially ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard (concussion), center Jon Halapio (hamstring), left tackle Nate Solder (concussion), right tackle Mike Remmers (back), and cornerback Janoris Jenkins (concussion) fully practiced. All are expected to play on Sunday.

“Rhett and Evan won’t go,” said Head Coach Pat Shurmur. “They just couldn’t quite make it, so they’ll be out. Then the other guys that we’ve been talking about (with concussions), there’s no reason they shouldn’t be cleared here. They just need to finish the last steps of the protocol and then they’ll be available.”

Late on Friday afternoon, Shepard, Solder, and Jenkins were officially cleared to play on Sunday.

OCTOBER 18, 2019 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Cornerback Corey Ballentine (concussion) was the only player not to practice on Friday. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard (concussion) was  limited in practice, wearing a non-contact jersey. Both have been officially ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Running back Saquon Barkley (ankle), running back Wayne Gallman (concussion), tight end Evan Engram (knee), and defensive lineman Olsen Pierre (concussion) fully practiced. All four are expected to play on Sunday. “Everybody else should be available,” said Head Coach Pat Shurmur. “We’ll see how that goes.”

Linebacker Ryan Connelly, who tore his ACL against the Washington Redskins on September 29th, underwent surgery this morning.

SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
Wide receiver Sterling Shepard (concussion), wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring), and tight end Garrett Dickerson (quad) did not practice on Friday. All three have been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

“(Shepard) just couldn’t quite make it back,” said Head Coach Pat Shurmur. “He’s getting better. He just kind of ran out of time this week.”

Wide receiver Cody Latimer (calf) was limited in practice and is officially “questionable” for the game.

Right guard Kevin Zeitler (shoulder), defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence (shoulder), and linebacker Markus Golden (hip) fully practiced. All three are expected to play on Sunday.

AUGUST 3, 2019 NEW YORK GIANTS TRAINING CAMP REPORT…
The New York Giants held their ninth full-team summer training camp practice on Saturday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The complete public training camp schedule is available at Giants.com.

ROSTER MOVES…
The New York Giants have placed linebacker Mark McLaurin on Injured Reserve with a broken foot and waived defensive end Alex Jenkins. To fill these roster spots, the Giants signed defensive end/linebacker Terrence Fede and claimed linebacker Joey Alfieri off of waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Giants signed McLaurin, a collegiate safety, as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Giants signed Jenkins after he impressed as a tryout player during the 2019 rookie mini-camp. Born in England, Jenkins was part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program and spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons on the Practice Squad of the New Orleans Saints.

The 27-year old, 6’4”, 267-pound Fede was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. In four seasons with the Dolphins, Fede played in 51 regular-season games with no starts, accruing 55 tackles and one sack. Fede signed with the Buffalo Bills in April 2018 but was waived before the season started.

The 6’3”, 239-pound Alfieri was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Eagles after the 2019 NFL Draft.

INJURY REPORT…
Wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring), wide receiver Brittan Golden (groin), offensive tackle George Asafo-Adjei (concussion), offensive tackle Chad Wheeler (unknown), defensive lineman John Jenkins (unknown), linebacker Avery Moss (unknown), cornerback Grant Haley (shoulder), and cornerback Sam Beal (hamstring) did not practice on Saturday.

MEDIA PRACTICE NOTES…

  • With CB Grant Haley out, Julian Love was the first-team nickel corner.
  • In red zone drills, CB Corey Ballentine closed quickly to knock away a pass from QB Daniel Jones. Then Ballentine made a heck of a play with a leaping interception of a Jones fade pass to WR Al0nzo Russell. Ballentine later had another pass break-up.
  • QB Alex Tanney threw a touchdown pass to WR Amba Etta-Tawo, beating LB Nate Stupar.
  • In one five-wide formation, the Giants had both RB Saquon Barkley and TE Evan Engram line up outside.
  • QB Daniel Jones overthrew WR Alonzo Russell deep.
  • CB/S Julian Love broke up a QB Daniel Jones pass intended for WR Reggie White, Jr.
  • CB Deandre Baker closed very fast on broke up a QB Kyle Lauletta pass over the middle intended for WR Da’Mari Scott.
  • WR Bennie Fowler dropped one pass, but caught three others in 11-on-11 drills.
  • CB Henre’ Tolliver broke up a pass.
  • QB Eli Manning finished 8-of-11; QB Daniel Jones was 5-of-13.

NEW YORK GIANTS SIGN RB ROD SMITH…
The New York Giants have signed unrestricted free agent running back Rod Smith (Dallas Cowboys). The 27-year old, 6’3”, 235-pound Smith was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Seattle Seahawks after the 2015 NFL Draft. He was released by Seattle in October 2015. The Cowboys claimed him off of waivers and he played with the Cowboys until the end of the 2018 season. Smith has played in 49 regular-season games with two starts, carrying the ball 101 times for 364 yards and five touchdowns. He also has caught 30 passes for 272 yards and one touchdown.

GIANTS HIRE MIKE DAWSON AND HENRY BAKER…
The New York Giants have officially hired Mike Dawson as outside linebackers coach and Henry Baker as assistant defensive backs coach.

“We are thrilled to add Mike and Henry to our coaching staff,” said Head Coach Pat Shurmur. “They are both outstanding teachers, communicators and motivators. They are also great people, and we look forward to both of them contributing to our success.”

Dawson replaces Rob Leonard, who had served as assistant linebackers coach and was hired away by the Miami Dolphins in January. Bill McGovern, who worked with Dawson when both were coaches for the Philadelphia Eagles and Boston College Eagles, remains the team’s linebackers coach.

Dawson served as defensive line coach for Central Florida (2016-2017) and Nebraska (2018) in recent years. He was the assistant defensive line coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014-2015.

Baker replaces Deshea Townsend, who was hired away by the Chicago Bears last month. Baker will serve under Defensive Backs Coach Lou Anarumo.

In recent years, Baker has served as cornerbacks coach at Delaware (2011-2016), Rutgers (2017), and North Carolina (2018). He had re-joined the Rutgers staff this offseason before opting for the Giants. Baker participated in the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Detroit Lions during the 2015 preseason camp and in 2016 with the New York Giants.
