Giants Add Ryan Cowden to Front Office; Two More Draft Picks Signed

GIANTS ADD RYAN COWDEN TO FRONT OFFICE…
Although not officially announced, the New York Giants have reportedly hired Ryan Cowden to a senior front office position. Pro Football Talk is reporting that his title will be executive advisor to the general manager.

Cowden’s entire career has been spent with two teams: the Carolina Panthers (2000-2015) and Tennessee Titans (2016-2023). Ironically, in January 2022, he was interviewed by John Mara for the team’s then vacant general manager position that was eventually filled by Joe Schoen. Cowden and Schoen worked together with the Panthers from 2001-2007 and reportedly have remained close friends. In fact, Schoen mentioned Cowden in his introductory press conference with the Giants in January 2022 as someone who has a great influence on him.

With the Panthers, Cowden served as a scouting assistant (2000), area scout (2001-2007), national scout (2008-2012), national scout/senior college scout (2012-2014), and assistant director of college scouting (2014.2015).

With the Titans, Cowden served as director of player personnel (2016-2017) and vice president of player personnel (2018-2023). He also served as the team’s interim general manager from December 2022 until January 2023.

GIANTS SIGN TWO MORE DRAFT PICKS…
The Giants signed cornerback Deonte Banks (1st round) and WR Jalin Hyatt (3rd round), two of their selections from the 2023 NFL Draft.

The team had earlier signed RB Eric Gray (5th round), CB Tre Hawkins (6th round), DL Jordon Riley (7th round), and S Gervarrius Owens (7th round).

Only OC John Michael Schmitz (2nd round) remains unsigned.

CHARGERS SIGN NICK WILLIAMS…
The Los Angeles Chargers have signed New York Giants unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Nick Williams to a 1-year contract.

The Giants signed Williams as an unrestricted free agent from the Detroit Lions in late July 2022. Williams was placed on Injured Reserve in early November with a biceps injury. In 2022, he played in eight games with seven starts, accruing 15 tackles, two quarterback hits, and two pass defenses. Williams played 45 percent of defensive snaps in games that he appeared. The 6’4”, 310-pound Williams was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has spent time with the Steelers Steelers (2013-2014), Kansas City Chiefs (2014-2016), Miami Dolphins (2016-2017), Chicago Bears (2018-2019), and Detroit Lions (2020-2021).

Don Martindale Likely Staying, Mike Kafka Possibly Leaving

DON MARTINDALE LIKELY STAYING, MIKE KAFKA POSSIBLY LEAVING…
Don “Wink” Martindale is likely remaining with the New York Giants as the team’s defensive coordinator. According to media reports, the Indianapolis Colts are have informed Martindale that he is no longer being considered for the team’s head-coaching vacancy. Martindale had been interviewed twice by the Colts for the position. The 59-year old Martindale served as the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens for four years before joining the Giants last offseason. From 2012-2017, he was the linebackers coach of the Ravens.

The Colts have also reportedly told New York Giants Offensive Coordinator Mike Kafka that he is no longer in the running for the team’s head-coaching position. Kafka had interviewed with the Colts once.

However, Kakfa remains one of two reported finalists for the head-coaching position with the Arizona Cardinals. Cincinnati Bengals Defensive Coordinator Lou Anarumo is also said to be still in the mix for the vacancy. Kakfa had also interviewed with the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans, but the Panthers hired Frank Reich and the Texans DeMeco Ryans as their new respective head coaches.

The 35-year old Kafka first became a coach with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, when he served an offensive quality control coach. He was then promoted by the Chiefs to quarterbacks coach (2018-2019) and then quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator (2020-2021).

GIANTS AND NICK WILLIAMS “PART WAYS”…
The Daily News is reporting that the Giants and Special Teams Quality Control Coach Nick Williams have “parted ways.” The 32-year old Williams was hired by former Giants’ Head Coach Joe Judge as an offensive assistant in 2020. He was Judge’s offensive quality control coach in 2021 before being shifted to special teams quality control coach by Head Coach Brian Daboll last offseason.

GIANTS PLACE XAVIER McKINNEY AND NICK WILLIAMS ON INJURY LISTS…
The New York Giants have placed safety Xavier McKinney (hand) on Non-Football Injury Reserve and defensive lineman Nick Williams (bicep) on Injured Reserve. McKinney must miss at least the next four games. McKinney injured his hand in an ATV accident on vacation. “I feel bad for him,” said Head Coach Brian Daboll. “I feel bad for us. I know he’s disappointed, but can’t do anything about that now.”

When asked if McKinney would return this season, Daboll replied, “We’ll see.”

Williams suffered his bicep injury during the Week 8 game against the Seattle Seahawks. Daboll said his injury is season-ending.

SHANE LEMIEUX RETURNS TO PRACTICE…
Offensive lineman Shane Lemieux (foot or toe), who is currently on Injured Reserve, has returned to practice. Lemieux will have up to three weeks to practice with the team without counting against the 53-man roster. Once that timeframe ends, he must either be added to the roster or remain on Injured Reserve for the rest of the season. Lemieux suffered an unspecified foot or toe injury in the first preseason game and was placed on Injured Reserve at the end of August.

AARON ROBINSON UNLIKELY TO RETURN THIS SEASON…
Head Coach Brian Daboll said on Tuesday that cornerback Aaron Robinson, who is currently on Injured Reserve, is unlikely to return this season. Robinson injured his knee in Week 4 against the Chicago Bears. Robinson, a 3rd round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, had missed Weeks 2 and 3 after undergoing an appendectomy in mid-September.

GIANTS SIGN DEFENSIVE LINEMAN TO PRACTICE SQUAD…
The Giants have signed defensive lineman Aaron Crawford to the Practice Squad. The 25-year old, 6’1”, 315-pound Crawford was originally signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent most of his rookie season on the team’s Practice Squad and 2021 on Injured Reserve. Crawford suffered a groin injury in the 2022 preseason finale and received settlement when he was released from Injured Reserve in early September.

To make room for Crawford, the team terminated the Practice Squad of cornerback Olaijah Griffin. The 6’0”, 175-pound Griffin was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Bills after the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent his rookie season the Bills’ Practice Squad. The Giants claimed Griffin off of waivers from the Buffalo Bills on in mid-August 2022.

NOVEMBER 8, 2022 NEW YORK GIANTS INJURY REPORT…
TE Daniel Bellinger (eye) and RT Evan Neal (knee) did not practice on Tuesday. “(Bellinger is) getting better,” said Head Coach Brian Daboll. “(He) looks a lot better, too.”

GIANTS CUT BLAKE MARTINEZ, CLAIM TYRE PHILLIPS, RE-SIGN THREE VETERANS…
The New York Giants have terminated the contract of inside linebacker Blake Martinez. The team also claimed offensive lineman Tyre Phillips off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. ESPN is reporting that Martinez’s release was a mutual decision by both parties.

In addition, as expected, the New York Giants re-signed three vested veterans who they cut yesterday in temporary roster-juggling moves. In order make room for the four players the team claimed off of waivers on Wednesday, the Giants had terminated the contracts of TE Tanner Hudson, OG Max Garcia, DL Nick Williams, and ILB Austin Calitro. Three additional roster spots became available as soon as the Giants were allowed to officially place OG Shane Lemieux, OLB Elerson Smith, and CB Rodarius Williams on short-term Injured Reserve.

Since all four players who were cut were vested veterans, they did not have to pass through waivers. Hudson, Williams, and Calitro were the players who were re-signed to the 53-man roster. Garcia was signed to the Practice Squad.

The Giants also waived TE Ricky Seals-Jones (toe) off of Injured Reserve with an injury settlement.

The Giants placed Blake Martinez on Injured Reserve in late September 2021 with a torn ACL in his left knee. He only played in three games and finished the year with 23 tackles. The Giants signed Martinez as an unrestricted free agent from the Green Bay Packers in March 2020. He had a major impact on the defense in 2020, starting all 16 games and playing in 97 percent of all defensive snaps. Martinez finished the season with a team-high 151 tackles and also accrued nine tackles for losses, three sacks, six quarterback hits, five pass defenses, one interception, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. The 6’2”, 237-pound Martinez was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Packers.

The 25-year old, 6’5”, 330-pound Phillips was originally drafted in the 3rd round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Ravens. In his first two years in the NFL, Phillips has played in 22 regular-season games with 13 starts, despite suffering an ankle injury in 2020 and a torn ACL in 2021. He has experience playing both guard spots and right tackle.

The Giants placed Seals-Jones on Injured Reserve on August 23rd with a toe injury that he suffered early in training camp. The Giants signed Seals-Jones in March 2022 as an unrestricted free agent from the Washington Commanders.

MORE PRACTICE SQUAD MOVES…
As previously reported in yesterday’s update, the Giants signed 15 players to their 16-man Practice Squad on Wednesday. On Thursday the team added six more players and released five from the Practice Squad.

Garcia was cut by the Giants from their 53-man roster yesterday.

The 23-year old, 5’9”, 172-pound Pimpleton was originally signed by the Detroit Lions as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2022 NFL Draft. The Lions waived him on Monday. Pimpleton has experience returning punts.

The 23-year old, 6’4”, 315-pound Davis was originally selected in the 3rd round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Davis spent time on both the 53-man roster (6 games with no starts) and Practice Squad as a rookie. The Vikings waived him on Tuesday.

The 26-year old, 6’5”, 280-pound Mondeaux was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the New Orleans Saints after the 2018 NFL Draft. He has spent time with the Saints (2018), Kansas City Chiefs (2019), and Pittsburgh Steelers (2019-2022). The Steelers waived him on Tuesday. Mondeaux has played in 26 NFL games with two starts, accruing 21 tackles and two sacks.

The 24-year old, 6’2”, 251-pound Wiley was signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2022 NFL Draft. The Ravens cut Wiley on Tuesday.

The 30-year old, 5’11”, 211-pound Jefferson was originally signed as undrafted rookie free agent by the Arizona Cardinals after the 2013 NFL Draft. He has spent time with the Cardinals (2013-2016), Ravens (2017-2019, 2021-2022), and San Francisco 49ers (2021). The Ravens cut Jefferson on Tuesday. Robinson has played in 104 regular-season games with 66 starts. However, he has not started a game since 2019, when he tore his ACL mid-season. Robinson has only played in six regular-season games since 2019.

Giants Claim Four Off of Waivers, Will Place Three on Injured Reserve

NEW YORK GIANTS CLAIM FOUR OFF OF WAIVERS, PLACE THREE ON IR…
The New York Giants claimed the following four players off of waivers on Wednesday:

  • G Jack Anderson (Philadelphia Eagles)
  • CB Justin Layne (Pittsburgh Steelers)
  • CB Nick McCloud (Buffalo Bills)
  • S Jason Pinnock (New York Jets)

The 23-year old, 6’4”, 314-pound Anderson was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Bills. The Eagles signed Anderson off of Buffalo’s Practice Squad in September 2021. He played in two games with one start for Philadelphia. Anderson spent part of the 2021 season on Injured Reserve with a hamstring injury.

The 24-year old, 6’2”, 192-pound Layne was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Steelers. In three years with Pittsburgh, Layne played in 43 regular-season games with no starts, being credited with 41 tackles.

The 24-year old, 6’0”, 193-pound McCloud was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Bills after the 2021 NFL Draft. The Cincinnati Bengals claimed him off of waivers in September 2021 and cut him in November. The Bills then re-signed McCloud to their Practice Squad. McCloud played in two regular-season games with the Bengals.

The 23-year old, 6’0”, 205-pound Pinnock was originally drafted in the 5th round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Jets. He played in 12 games with two starts as a rookie, accruing 16 tackles, one pass defense, and two forced fumbles.

When asked about Pinnock, Head Coach Brian Daboll responded, “He’s good on teams. He had some good film out there. He’s played in the deep part of the field. We practiced against them; we played against them. He has some redeeming qualities and traits that when the guys watched him in the scouting department and our coaches, thought it would be a good claim.”

When asked about Anderson, Daboll replied, “He played (both guard and center). Smart – you know he got claimed by Philadelphia (when I was in Buffalo). So, didn’t want to lose him. I remember we didn’t want to lose him, but he had an opportunity to go and get claimed and looking forward to working with him again. He can play inside – either spot – and he can play center too.”

To make immediate room for these four, the Giants terminated the contracts of the following players:

  • TE Tanner Hudson
  • OG Max Garcia
  • DL Nick Williams
  • ILB Austin Calitro

Some or all of these four players may be back as soon as tomorrow. Players on the initial 53-man roster could not be officially placed on short-term Injured Reserve until 4PM on Wednesday. Daboll said on Wednesday that the team intends to place the following three players on short-term Injured Reserve:

  • OG Shane Lemieux (foot)
  • OLB Elerson Smith (ankle/foot)
  • CB Rodarius Williams (ACL)

These three players will have to remain on Injured Reserve for at least four games. “I think there’s a chance (all three could return this season),” said Daboll.

“(Lemieux is) pretty resilient,” said Daboll. “Unfortunately, he’s been through it once, but he’s in good spirits. So, he’ll work back. He’s been already rehabbing, and he’ll be back as soon as he can.”

GIANTS SIGN 15 PLAYERS TO THE PRACTICE SQUAD…
The New York Giants have signed the following players to the team’s 16-man Practice Squad:

“Day-to-day,” said Head Coach Brian Daboll about Thibodeaux and Ojulari. “Both of those guys – I’d say him and Azeez are rehabbing and doing a good job and getting better each day… They’re getting better. I know that.”

VETERANS REPORT TO TRAINING CAMP…
New York Giants veterans reported to summer training camp on Tuesday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Rookies reported last week on July 19th. The first training camp practice will be held on Wednesday. See an updated training camp schedule at Giants.com.

GIANTS MAKE EIGHT ROSTER MOVES…
The New York Giants officially signed the following four players on Tuesday:

  • WR Marcus Kemp
  • OT Kamaal Seymour
  • DE Nick Williams
  • S Andrew Adams

In order to make room for these players, the Giants cut the following four players on Tuesday:

  • WR Travis Toivonen
  • DE Jabari Ellis
  • CB Maurice Canady
  • S Henry Black

The 26-year old, 6’4”, 210-pound Kemp was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2017 NFL Draft. Other than a brief stint with the Miami Dolphins late in 2020, Kemp was with the Chiefs from 2017 until 2021. Kemp missed the 2019 season with a torn ACL and MCL knee injury. Overall, he has played in 44 regular-season games, primarily on special teams. Kemp only four career catches for 42 yards.

The 27-year old, 6’6”, 319-pound Seymour originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Las Vegas Raiders after the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent all of his rookie season on the Practice Squad of the Raiders and missed all of 2021 with an Achilles’ tendon injury. The Raiders waived him with a non-football injury in April. Seymour has not played in a regular-season game.

The 32-year old, 6’4”, 310-pound Williams was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has spent time with the Steelers Steelers (2013-2014), Kansas City Chiefs (2014-2016), Miami Dolphins (2016-2017), Chicago Bears (2018-2019), and Detroit Lions (2020-2021). Williams has played in 75 regular-season games with 35 starts. Last season, he started all 17 games for the Lions and finished the year with 27 tackles and 0.5 sacks.

The 29-year old, 5’11’, 202-pound Adams was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Giants after the 2016 NFL Draft. He has spent time with the Giants (2016-2018), three stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2018, 2019-2020, and 2021), Detroit Lions (2019), and Philadelphia Eagles (2021). In all, Adams has played in 87 regular-season games with 35 starts. Seventeen of those starts came with the Giants in 2016 and 2017 and eighteen with the Buccaneers, mostly in 2019. Most of Adams’ playing time the past two seasons has come on special teams.

The Giants signed Toivonen to the Practice Squad in October 2021, cut him in November, and re-signed him to the Practice Squad in December. The 6’4”, 212-pound Toivonen went undrafted in 2020. The Seattle Seahawks signed him in June 2021 and waived him in late August.

The Giants signed Ellis as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Giants signed Canady in May 2022 as an unrestricted free agent from the Dallas Cowboys. The 6’1”, 200-pound Canady was originally drafted in the 6th round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. He has spent time with the Ravens (2016-2019), New York Jets (2019), and Cowboys (2020-2021). The Ravens cut him in November 2019 and he was then claimed by the Jets. Canady signed with the Cowboys in March 2020, but opted out of the 2020 NFL season due to COVID.

The Giants signed Black as unrestricted free agent from the Green Bay Packers in May 2022. The 6’0”, 204-pound Black was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Green Bay Packers after the 2020 NFL Draft.

Giants Sign Adoree’ Jackson; Coaching Staff Changes

NEW YORK GIANTS SIGN ADOREE’ JACKSON…
Multiple media outlets are reporting that the New York Giants have signed free agent cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, who was cut by the Tennessee Titans last week. The contract is reportedly a 3-year, $39 million deal that includes $26.5 million in guaranteed money.

The 25-year old, 5’11”, 185-pound Jackson was drafted by the Titans in the 1st round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In his four seasons with the Titans, Jackson played in 46 regular-season games, with 41 starts, accruing 189 tackles, 33 pass defenses, two interceptions, and three forced fumbles. He missed most of the 2020 NFL season with a knee injury, playing in just the last three games.

COACHING STAFF CHANGES…
According to Giants.com, the team has made a number of changes to the assistant coaching staff:

  • Anthony Blevins is now the assistant linebackers coach/special teams assistant (he was the assistant defensive backs coach).
  • Mike Treier is now the assistant defensive backs coach (he was the defensive quality control coach).
  • Nick Williams is now the offensive quality control coach (he was an offensive assistant).
  • Jody Wright is now a defensive assistant (he was an offensive assistant).

NEW YORK GIANTS ANNOUNCE CHANGES TO OPERATIONS AND COACHING STAFF…
The New York Giants have announced the following changes to their football operations and coaching staff:

Dr. Lani Lawrence has been hired for the newly-created Director of Wellness and Clinical Services. She will also oversee the team’s Player Engagement/Development Program. Lawrence was previously a clinical and sport psychologist at the University of Southern California as well as serving as a member of the USA Track & Field sport psychology group.

Lawrence has assumed the duties previously held by David Tyree, who for the past six years had served as Director of Player Engagement/Development. The re-structured program will also include Assistant Director Ashley Lynn, Outside Linebackers Coach/Senior Assistant Bret Bielema, Special Teams Coordinator Thomas McGaughey, and Special Assistant Jessie Armstead. This department falls under the umbrella of Senior Vice President of Medical Services Ronnie Barnes.

“When I say player engagement, I literally mean engaging with our players, which is really hard with everything that’s currently going on in the country – the virtual learning, with our athletes not being able to come to the facility,” said Lawrence. “What I was tasked to do was to make our rookies better. But also to make the players better. I’m fortunate that everybody within the organization has those same goals, from ownership to the head coach to the people that I work with in player development.

“My primary role is to not only be a support, but to help players be a better person in general. A whole person, not just a better athlete. If they’re better in their personal lives, if they have better connections with their teammates, with their spouses or people close to them, if they’re living healthy lives, ultimately, the reward is that they’re going to be a better athlete. I get to support the players emotionally, physically and mentally, and my hope is that it translates onto the field.”

Ed Triggs is now the Director of Football Operations. He had served as the team’s Football Operations Coordinator since 2016. Triggs will be responsible for managing the salary cap, assisting in contract negotiations, Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) compliance, and working with the pro scouting, college scouting, coaching, and the data and innovation staffs.

Ty Siam is now the Director of Football Data & Innovation, after serving with the team in other capacities since 2015.

“Football, from a technological perspective, has been moving at a rapid pace to build a data fluidity that can be utilized across multiple groups,” Siam said. “For us, that’s our college and pro scouts, our coaching staff, it’s our strength and conditioning staff and our medical and performance teams. We had gotten to a point where we had such a vast amount of data internally and a number of different audiences were looking at it from various points of view. We thought it was really important to centralize the way we distribute information to all of those groups. That was really the big impetus.

“From a video and data standpoint, how do we get the most meaningful information in front of our decision makers on a regular basis? Sometimes it’s low-hanging fruit, sometimes it’s much more complex with some of the analysis and modeling we’re doing. But if we can effectively get the most appropriate information in front of our decision makers on a regular basis, then I think that’s how we’ll earmark success in this category.”

Courtney Kennedy is now a Football Data Analyst, after serving as an intern with the team in 2019. “I’ve been helping all different football departments,” Kennedy said. “Anything from scouting to the medical team to coaching, a variety of database statistical projects.”

Marquis Pendleton has been shifted from the team’s scout in the BLESTO scouting combine to an area scout. “I’m excited. It’s a new challenge for me,” Pendleton said. “It gives me an opportunity to grow within a different area, see different players, meet different people within the industry and different coaches.”

Blaise Bell is now the new BLESTO scout, after serving as an intern with the team in 2019.

Hannah Burnett has been hired as the new Midlands scout, after serving almost two years with the scouting department of the Atlanta Falcons. Burnett is the franchise’s first full-time female scout.

“I completely understand and am aware that this is an awesome opportunity, and it’s important for females in the league,” said Burnett. “But I’ve said this from the get-go, I just want to be the best area scout that I can. I want to go in there like everyone else goes in there and go about my business like a pro. Everything else will work itself out if I go about my business the right way. For me, that’s my mindset. It’s always been my mindset. I’m just continuing to stay on that course.”

Craig Fitzgerald has been hired as the Director of Strength and Performance. He has served in a similar capacity with Harvard University (2005-2009), University of South Carolina (2009-2011), Penn State University (2012-2013), Houston Texans (2014-2017), and the University of Tennessee (2018-2020).

Sam Coad has been hired as the Performance Manager/Assistant Strength Coach. An Australian, Coad has served in a similar capacity with the University of Michigan (2014-2015), University of Oklahoma (2015-2017), and Texas A&M University (2018-2019).

Nick Williams has been hired as an offensive assistant. He has previously served as wide receivers coach at Jacksonville State University (2014-2016) and Southern Illinois University (2017-2019).
