New York Giants Officially Waive David Baas, Designate Him Post-June 1 Cut: The New York Giants have waived/failed physical center David Baas. According to the team’s press release, both the neck and knee injuries that Baas suffered last year are still issues. Baas said he may still need surgery on the neck.

Baas was set to make $4.75 million in salary in 2014 and count $8.225 million against the team’s 2014 salary cap. According to press reports, even though Baas has actually been waived now, he has been designated a post-June 1 cut. That means $3.225 million of the $6.45 million in dead money will now account against the 2015 salary cap. In the short-term, in 2014, the Giants will now “save” $5 million against the cap.

“I haven’t lost that drive, I haven’t lost that desire to play football,” said Baas. “But sometimes other things are more important, and we’ve come to that crossroads. The thing that takes precedence right now is my health…It’s part of the business. It’s something that you prepare for and you just kind of move on from there.

“The Giants have been absolutely fantastic. They definitely have changed mine and my family’s lives forever. Once we get the health issues taken care of, we’ll go from there, and maybe there’s another chance (to play). Coming back to the Giants, who knows? They’ve just been really great and the medical staff has been excellent. I enjoyed playing for (Head Coach) Tom Coughlin. I wish Tom Coughlin could have been my head coach my entire career. That would have been nice. (Offensive Line Coach Pat) Flaherty and everybody, they’ve just been awesome. I can’t say enough good things about the Giants organization, the owners and everybody. It’s part of the game. I thank them and definitely am grateful for everything they’ve done.”

Baas originally signed with the Giants as an unrestricted free agent from the San Francisco 49ers in July 2011. But he has been plagued with one injury after the other during his tenure with the team. He missed five games in 2011 (burner, knee, headaches). After the 2012 season, he had surgeries to his ankle, knee, hip, elbow, and shoulder. In 2013, he missed 13 games with the knee and neck issues.

“It’s been a tough road with injuries,” Baas said. “I’ve been able to battle through them for most of the time.”

As for the possibility of neck surgery, Baas said, “I’m actually going to get another opinion next week. I’ve gotten a couple different people saying that they would recommend it if I ever wanted to play again. It’s definitely something I have to think through. That’s what we’re going to do. I don’t want to make a rash decision and pay for it later, so we’ll listen to the experts.  The knee is a little bit disappointing, because it’s taking a little longer to recover. It’s something we’ll continue to try and get healthy.”

“I love the game of football,” said Baas. “My heart is still into it, but sometimes you’ve got to put your health and your future with your family and all that stuff first. We’re just gathering all the information right now and we’ll see. The Giants had to do what they had to do, and now I can focus on getting my knee better and I can also really gather all my information that I need for my neck and figure out what the best decision is.”

Baas also addressed the possibility that his career may be over.

“I got to play for two very good organizations, the 49ers and the Giants, and to get to win a Super Bowl with the Giants,” Baas said. “I met a lot of great people, established a lot of great relationships. I’ll forever be a Giant, and obviously when you come back and talk about the Super Bowl and all that stuff, it’s like you haven’t missed a beat. I’ll be looking forward to those moments. We’ll see what happens.”

New York Giants Confirm Re-Signing Stevie Brown and Josh Brown: The New York Giants have confirmed that they have re-signed unrestricted free agents safety Stevie Brown and place kicker Josh Brown.

New York Giants Waive LB Marcus Dowtin: The New York Giants also announced that they have waived linebacker Marcus Dowtin who spent time both on the Giants’ Practice Squad and 53-man roster last season.

New York Giants Sign Geoff Schwartz, Rashad Jennings, and O’Brien Schofield: According to multiple press reports, the New York Giants have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent guard/tackle Geoff Schwartz (Kansas City Chiefs). Details of the contract are not yet known.

According to the player himself, unrestricted free agent running back Rashad Jennings (Oakland Raiders) was to sign his contract with the Giants on Tuesday night. Details of the deal are not yet known.

Linval Joseph Signs with Viking, Ryan Mundy with Bears, Brandon Myers with Buccaneers: Unrestricted free agent defensive tackle Linval Joseph (New York Giants) has signed with the Minnesota Vikings. The contract is reportedly a 5-year, $31.5 million deal.

Unrestricted free agent safety Ryan Mundy (New York Giants) has signed with the Chicago Bears. It is a 2-year deal but the financial terms are not yet known.

Unrestricted free agent tight end Brandon Myers (New York Giants) has signed a 2-year, $4 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

March 10, 2014 New York Giants Free Agent News and Rumors: Here is the latest on the free agent front for the New York Giants:

  • The NFL Network is reporting that the Giants have offered contracts to unrestricted free agents defensive end/tackle Arthur Jones (Baltimore Ravens) and safety Ryan Mundy (New York Giants).
  • The Star-Ledger is reporting that the Giants are one of seven teams to express interest in unrestricted free agent tight end Andrew Quarless (Green Bay Packers).
  • The New York Daily News is reporting that the Giants have expressed interest in unrestricted free agent tight ends Brandon Pettigrew (Detroit Lions) and Ed Dickson (Baltimore Ravens).
  • The New York Daily News is reporting that the Giants have expressed interest in unrestricted free agent centers Evan Dietrich-Smith (Green Bay Packers) and Brian de la Puente (New Orleans Saints). The paper says the interest in Dietrich-Smith is “serious.”
  • The New York Daily News is reporting that unrestricted free agent linebacker Jon Beason (New York Giants) is likely to test the free agent market on Tuesday rather than re-sign with the Giants before then.
  • Newsday is reporting that no deal is imminent between the Giants and unrestricted free agent safety Stevie Brown, who is expected now to test the open market.
  • According to press reports, unrestricted free agent cornerback Alterraun Verner (Tennessee Titans) appears to have already determine what team he will sign with on Tuesday as he has no visits planned. The Giants are known to be one of the teams who have expressed an interest in his services. However, NJ.com is reporting that Verner’s asking price has gotten too high for the Giants.

NFL teams have been allowed to talk contract with the agents of unrestricted free agents since Saturday. These players can officially sign contracts with new teams starting at 4:00PM ET on Tuesday.

New York Giants Close to Re-Signing Josh Brown and Trumaine McBride: The Star-Ledger is reporting that the Giants are close to re-signing unrestricted free agent place kicker Josh Brown (New York Giants).

The Bergen Record is reporting that the Giants are close to a new 2-year deal with unrestricted free agent cornerback Trumaine McBride (New York Giants).

Details on Contract for Mark Herzlich: According to NFL Players Association records, linebacker Mark Herzlich’s contract is a 1-year deal with a $775,000 base salary. The Daily News is reporting that the contract also includes a $225,000 in roster and workout bonuses.

Antrel Rolle Talks Defense, His Contract, and Recruiting Jermichael Finley: The New York Giants finished 8th in the NFL in total defense in 2013 in terms of yards allowed, a dramatic improvement over their 31st ranking in 2012. But safety Antrel Rolle spoke yesterday about what the Giants defense needs to do in order to improve in 2014 and be more like the NFL’s best defense – the Seattle Seahawks.

“I think Seattle’s defense set some pretty big standards and some pretty big shoes to fill for the 2014 season,” said Rolle. “Our expectations are always great. We’re just wishing for more consistency and better play overall from the Giants because we can do it.”

Rolle lamented the fact that Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell was forced to simplify the defense last year because some of his teammates could not keep up with the more complicated schemes.

“There were sometimes during the year when Perry Fewell was restricted from running certain defenses that I know he would love to run,” Rolle said. “Certain defenses I know could have helped us out defensively at the beginning of the year. But it takes everyone. It’s a collective effort and if one guy is wrong we’re all wrong. For the early part of the year that’s something that we failed to do as a defensive unit. You’re going to have guys who study and go way beyond the X’s and O’s and you’re going to have guys who go in there and just do what is taught to them during meeting times and when they study at the facility and what is taking place on the field. This game, you have to study this game and that’s what a lot of people don’t understand. You have to study the game with the guy beside you because that’s who you’re going to be playing with, that’s who you need to have the same chemistry with.”

“We failed to do that, especially in the beginning of the season, so coach Perry Fewell had to simplify a lot of things for our defense this year,” said Rolle. “We’re looking for the guys who can step in, who can understand the defense, who can play the defense and can be very versatile because that’s the way we won when we won the Super Bowl in 2011.”

Rolle also talked about the Giants playing with a more aggressive, physical swagger on defense.

“I think we can also get better at that, being more consistent, bringing more swagger and more attitude to the game of football and be a fearful defense,” Rolle said. “When you go out there and you see Seattle’s defense, they instill fear in Denver from the first play, from the crowd noise to the hike going over Peyton (Manning’) head to the Kam Chancellor hit on Demaryius Thomas at the beginning, they set the tempo early. In my eyes, Denver was a little bit timid throughout the game. That bar is set extremely high for that game. They went out there, more importantly like I tell everybody throughout the week even with the Giants and myself, this game is won on attitude. They went out there and set the tempo extremely early. You saw some fear in the Denver offense, from the front line all the way through. The defense created that. They created their own mismatches and they took advantage of every opportunity.”

Rolle currently has one year left on his current contract and is set to count $9.25 million against the Giants 2014 salary cap. “I won’t approach (the Giants about a new contract),” said Rolle. “I’ve never been the kind of guy to worry about contract issues. In my eyes I’m still under contract, I still have a year left to go. If the Giants want to do something, they’ll come to me. They’re a very professional organization, I’m a professional about my business, and whatever happens it won’t be in the media until they reveal it because I never speak about contract issues. So we’ll see what happens.”

Rolle watched the Super Bowl with soon-to-be unrestricted free agent tight end Jermichael Finley of the Green Bay Packers. Finley’s 2014 season ended when he underwent spinal fusion surgery in November. Rolle said he was lobbying Finley to sign with the Giants.

“We were recruiting each other,” Rolle said. “(Finley) said he would love to be a part of the Giants. And going up against this guy for a number of years now, I said I would love for him to be a part of the Giants so we don’t have to face him. He’s an extreme talent. He’s an exceptional guy and more important, I know he’s a fiery guy. I think that’s something we could definitely use on the offensive side of the ball, a guy with some intensity…He’s a guy I would love to be a teammate with, and I think we could do some great things together.”

New Giants defensive coordinator Ben McAdoo coached Finley in Green Bay. McAdoo was the Packers tight ends coach from 2006-2011.

“(Finley) was telling me Ben McAdoo is a brain, that he’s going to keep defenses guessing, he’s very smart,” Rolle said. “I just said, ‘Yes!’ I feel like our offense is definitely going to excel in his system and Eli is going to do what he does best, which is lead our offense. And the defense will be there to pick up the pieces and make sure we create more turnovers and give them more opportunities to do their thing.”

Justin Tuck Comments Again on His Free Agent Future: Last Thursday, soon-to-be unrestricted free agent DE Justin Tuck told The New York Post that he would likely hit the open market when free agency begins on March 11. Last Friday, Tuck contradicted himself a bit when he said it was possible he would re-sign with the Giants before March 11. Last Saturday, Tuck told The New York Post that he and the Giants would like to get a new deal done.

“I honestly think the Giants are going to do everything in their power to make it work,” Tuck said. “They want me to be back. I think I want to be back.”

“I’ve only been here, with one team,” Tuck said. “The Giants are a great organization, but everyone understands it’s a business. We’ll do our due diligence — on both sides — and see what happens…It’s a little strange, not knowing where I’m going to be. It’s something I’ve never experienced. I’m just trying to enjoy the process…I feel great and I’ll be playing somewhere next year…I predict that next year, whatever team I’m on is going to win.”

The Latest on the Giants Search for a New Offensive Coordinator: Here is a rundown of known interviews the New York Giants are conducting with new offensive coordinator candidates:

  • Mike Sullivan (ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator): Met with the Giants on Wednesday.
  • Dowell Loggains (ex-Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator): Met with the Giants on Thursday.
  • Karl Dorrell (ex-Houston Texans quarterbacks coach): Meeting with Giants on Friday.
  • Ben McAdoo (Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach): Will meet with Giants on Saturday.

On Thursday, Giants President/CEO John Mara said there also may be additional candidates.

Marc Ross Will Interview With Dolphins on Sunday: As we reported on Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins have requested and received permission from the New York Giants to interview Giants Vice President of Player Evaluation Marc Ross. Both teams are considering Ross for their general manager vacancies.

NFL.com is reporting that Ross will interview with the Dolphins on Sunday.

Michael Strahan Makes Final 15 for Potential Hall of Fame Induction, George Young Does Not: Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan (1993-2007) made the cut from 25 to 15 modern-era Pro Football Hall of Fame 2014 candidates on Thursday night. Those actually being entered into the Hall of Fame in 2014 will be announced on February 1st, the day before Super Bowl XLVIII, with the list first being reduced to 10 then 5.

Strahan made the cut to 10 last year, but did not make the final cut to five.

Strahan played 15 seasons for the Giants and was voted to seven Pro Bowls and named All Pro six times (four times first-team, two times second-team). He was also named the 2001 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He accrued 141.5 sacks as a Giant.

Mike Sullivan to Interview for Giants Offensive Coordinator Position This Week: According to The Star-Ledger, Mike Sullivan will interview for the New York Giants’ vacant offensive coordinator position on Tuesday or Wednesday. The position opened up last week when Kevin Gilbride retired from the NFL. Sullivan was the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012-13 before he was fired last week. Sullivan served on Tom Coughlin’s staff with the Giants as wide receivers coach (2004-09) and quarterbacks coach (2010-11).

Redskins Confirm Monday’s Interview with Perry Fewell: The Washington Redskins have publicly confirmed that they interviewed New York Giants’ Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell on Monday for their head coaching vacancy. Fewell is one of many potential candidates for the Redskins’ head coaching job.

Surgery for Left Tackle Will Beatty: According to The Star-Ledger, left tackle Will Beatty underwent surgery on December 31 to repair the leg he fractured in the regular-season finale against the Washington Redskins. Newsday is reporting that the injury was a fractured tibia to his right leg. Both papers say Beatty did not suffer any ligament damage. Beatty is expected to be ready for the start of the 2014 season, but it is not clear if he will be ready for offseason Organized Team Activity (OTA) practices or even the start of training camp.

Safety Stevie Brown Thinks He Will Re-Sign With Giants: The Star-Ledger is reporting that soon-to-be unrestricted free agent safety Stevie Brown believes he will re-sign with the Giants. Free agency begins on March 11. An unidentified source told The Ledger that contract talks between the Giants and Brown should pick up soon as the Giants finish their personnel evaluations.

“It’s a great team,” Brown told Giants.com. “It’s a great organization, great people around here all the time, great fan base – everything like that. So it’s definitely a place I want to be. It’s just now we’ve got to talk to everybody upstairs (in the front office) and see where it goes from there.”

Brown tore the ACL in his left knee in the 2013 preseason.

“I’m about to start doing side-to-side stuff here soon,” Brown told Giants.com. “It feels strong. It feels stable. I couldn’t ask for it to be better at the stage that it’s in.”

September 20, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Not practicing on Friday were CB Corey Webster (hip), TE Adrien Robinson (foot), and OT David Diehl (thumb). Webster is officially listed as “doubtful” for the game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Robinson and Diehl will not play.

“Evidently (Webster) has an issue with his hip flexor, in that area somewhere,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin, “and he couldn’t practice yesterday and couldn’t practice today.”

QB Ryan Nassib (foot) and OG Brandon Mosley (back) practiced on a limited basis. Both players are officially listed as “probable” for the game.

WR Hakeem Nicks was excused from practice for personal reasons, but is expected to play on Sunday.

New York Giants Must Reduce Roster to 53: By 6:00PM on Saturday, the Giants must make at least 22 roster moves in order to reduce their roster from 75 to 53.

August 30, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Various press sources are reporting that RB Andre Brown, who fractured his left leg in the preseason game against the Patriots, will miss 4-6 weeks. Head Coach Tom Coughlin was less definitive. “Not really (any timetable), said Coughlin. “Not until I hear some more information. There’s MRI’s and that type of stuff going on so, when we know, you’ll know.”

Coughlin was asked if Brown could be placed on Reserve/Designated-to-Return List (temporary Injured Reserve). “He could be. Yeah. Sure,” replied Coughlin. If Brown is placed on the Designated-to-Return List, he would be ineligible to return until for eight weeks. And the Giants could only put him on temporary IR after he is first on the 53-man roster, meaning another player would have to lose a roster spot first. Teams can only use the temporary IR option once per season.

TE Adrien Robinson sprained his left foot in the preseason game against the Patriots. “Supposedly a sprain,” said Coughlin. “At this point in time and, again, you could come back in five minutes and I could say it’s a different story. There’s no surgery or anything like that to talk about…It’s not exactly mid-foot (sprain), it’s off to the side a little bit. I think he tried to turn around at halftime and go last night, but he couldn’t really get up on his toes well enough to be able to do that. ”

LB Dan Connor suffered a burner in the preseason game against the Patriots, but is not expected to miss any time. “Just shoulder tightness, nothing terrible,’’ Connor said. “I could play today, I could have played a lot more (against the Patriots).’’

S Tyler Sash suffered a concussion in preseason game against the Patriots. No word yet on how much time he might miss.

WR Victor Cruz, who suffered a heel contusion in the preseason game against the Jets, says he hopes to be able to play in the season opener against the Cowboys but is unsure if the team will let him. “I hope so,” said Cruz. “We’re still going to gauge it throughout the weekend. I’m still going to be coming in for treatment or whatnot, so we’ll see how it goes. Still doctors that have to say it’s OK. The training staff is taking it slow, but I’d like to practice and get some live work in on Monday if possible.”

OC David Baas, who sprained the MCL in one of his knees in the preseason game against the Colts, says he is improving but Baas is not sure if he will be ready for the season-opener against the Cowboys. “It’s responded really well,” Baas said. “My doctors have said they are very happy with my progress. And, like I said, this is something that we’re just going to continue to work on and keep pushing it to its max and hope for the best. We’ll take it day-to-day.”

Surgery for S Stevie Brown, who tore the ACL in his left knee in the preseason game against the Jets, has not yet been scheduled. “It’s very disappointing,” said Brown. “You work all summer getting ready for the season and just a freak accident like that to happen definitely sucks.”
