Eli Manning and Kevin Gilbride, New York Giants (September 8, 2013)

Kevin Gilbride Speaks Out: Kevin Gilbride, the much-criticized offensive coordinator of the New York Giants who retired last Thursday, was interviewed on Tuesday night on SiriusXM NFL Radio. Gilbride made the following comments:

  • On Eli Manning: “(The state of the offensive line)  just made it impossible for our quarterback to function. (Manning is) a guy where if you give him enough time, he’s always going to be throwing the ball to the right person. He’s going to know what you’re doing defensively. He’s going to see through your disguises. He’s going to be an accurate passer. But he’s not a scrambler, and you’ve got to give him some help. And if you give him some help he’s proven that he can win a championship for you…I think more than anything, when you’re behind he is not one of those guys that is (concerned about interceptions)… He’s going to try to win the game. If you’re down by two scores at the end of the game, he’s going to throw it up and he’ll force it because he’s going to try to give his team a chance. And if it happens to be picked off and that ends the opportunity and it reflects poorly on him, to be quite candid he could care less. He’s just going to do whatever he thinks he has to do to give his team a chance to win. So because we were behind, we started the season 0-6, there were a number of situations at the end of a game where those scenarios arose and we certainly incurred our fair share of turnovers in that regard. But I think if you do solidify the line, I believe he is an accurate passer, he is going to throw it to the right person. But everybody’s got to do their job and give him an opportunity to do his and he will do it very well.”
  • On how the personnel issues forced the Giants to adapt their offense: “In general, I think philosophically we just modified substantially what we normally do. We’ve been a dynamic, explosive, throw the ball down the field, let your guys go to a lot of vertical read type of stretch principals, and we had to abandon those. Those are the things that we’d done very well and allowed us to be in the top 10 offensively for a long time. You can’t do it because your quarterback would be on his back while you waited for those things to happen. You became much more conservative, much more three-step oriented, which was good for a while, but people, they’re smart on that (defensive) side of the ball and they identify fairly quickly what your weaknesses are and they realize what your adjustments have been, so they take those things away. When we had to expand what we wanted to do, that’s when our shortcomings manifested themselves.”
  • On the wide receivers: “Victor Cruz still played very well on the inside for us, but it became readily apparent to defenses that we weren’t playing as well with the outside receiver position. That became an area that people just, they had no reservation about lining up just bump and run and getting an extra guy into the box, making it more difficult and challenging to run and forcing you to throw the ball vertically a little bit. You try to throw some three-step fades and fade stops, but they’re sitting on those things. I think if the Giants can get the wideout position straightened out – the outside position, not the inside because between Victor Cruz and the emergence of Jerrel Jernigan at the end, that will help.”
  • On the tight ends: “Well I think there’s no question they’re going to bring in some people. There are some young guys – the Larry Donnells and Adrien Robinsons that have some size and look to be enough physical ability to get open and catch the ball – but they are raw, young players and need a lot of growth and development. So I think it wouldn’t surprise me if they bring in a veteran tight end that can come in and play that position. We didn’t get the production that we’ve had the last few years out of that spot…When they started doubling Victor Cruz, which they did from the second game on every time it was an obvious passing down, you needed somebody else to win. And when you weren’t winning outside you hoped your tight end would do it. Now Brandon Myers did a terrific job for us when they played zone coverages and he’d find the soft spot and make the tough catches, but I think they’re going to look for a bigger, faster guy. You know, he’d be a great No. 2, but I think they’re looking for somebody that can be a solid starter at that position. It remains to be seen if those young guys will mature fast enough to give them the confidence to play with them in a starting role.”
  • On the running backs: “There’s no question they’re gonna have to get a running back that can be the bell cow. I think we had hoped Andre Brown could be that person but he didn’t come back until about the 9th game, 10th game. It looked like he was gonna be that guy the first couple of games and then he was slowed by injury.”
  • On the offensive line: “We had been concerned about depth in the offensive line for a while now. That group has aged…I would say the offensive line first and foremost has to be addressed. I think Justin Pugh advanced and grew outside as a starter at the right tackle position, but they need another significant upgrade in the o-line and certainly some added depth.”
  • On left tackle Will Beatty: “We made the gamble that William Beatty would be the guy and he had played very well last year. And this year he did not have as good a year. He was much more inconsistent than he had been the year before. He was slowed by some problems, and then of course he finished the year with a significant knee injury, so that remains to be seen how he recovers from that. Now I think there’s no question that he has the physical skills to play the left tackle position. He has the skill set to match up speed wise with anybody. I just think he’s got to demonstrate again the commitment and the toughness that you have to have on a play-in and play-out basis. But there’s no question in my mind he has the physical talent. It’s just a matter of making his consistency be at the level that it needs to be, because some games he played well and then some games we certainly had our problems.”
  • On Mike Sullivan possibly replacing him as offensive coordinator: “He’s a bright individual and he grew very quickly and developed a nice rapport in the quarterback room with the quarterbacks, most notably Eli, of course. Then he had a chance to go down and get his feet wet in Tampa Bay. The first year they did a terrific job. This year they struggled. I’m sure without knowing full well what took place down there I’m sure there were extenuating circumstances which caused the fall-off. But he’s a good coach, a good person, he knows the people here, he knows the system, that’s what he’s grown up in, so I think he would be a natural, seamless transition if they chose to go in that direction. To be totally candid with you I have no idea what their thinking is, but he certainly would be a good choice.”

Victor Cruz Speaks Out: Wide receiver Victor Cruz spoke to the press on Wednesday at a promotion event for XBox. Cruz made the following comments:

  • On Mike Sullivan possibly being the Giants’ next offensive coordinator:  “I’m rooting for him. I could see (some arguging for a new system) but, you know, I think it’s just his familiarity with our personnel, with our offense, the one we had. Obviously, he’s running a similar offense with Tampa Bay but I’m sure he’ll have some tweaks here or there. I just think we need a refresher, I think, more so than people needing a whole big name. A refreshing face that we know, one we’re all comfortable with, and we can go from there.”
  • On Kevin Gilbride’s point that the outside receivers did not perform well: “You would see it. You would see, whether it was Rueben (Randle), whether it was Hakeem (Nicks), this isn’t pointing the finger at anyone, but the play that we got from the outside wasn’t what we’re accustomed to having. We’re accustomed to having Hakeem be an outside threat with a 1,000-yard season that he’s done in the past and Rueben being himself on the outside although he did have six touchdowns this year which is very much improved from the year before. But that consistency wasn’t there from the outside position. You could definitely feel it throughout the season, you could see it from game to game that our productivity wasn’t there from the outside position.”
  • On the on-field relationship between Eli Manning and his receivers: “You never know with Eli, he just keeps an even keel the whole way. But sometimes when you have those passes that you throw up and typically they’re caught for big plays and when that doesn’t happen naturally you tend to throw it differently or go to a different read or go somewhere else with the ball. That would happen naturally. I mean, if I was quarterback that would happen to me, so I’d imagine it would happen to Eli as well. That’s definitely natural.”
  • On Cruz and Nicks missing so much offseason work last year: “Honestly, I thought we’d go in and we’d pick it up right where we left off, especially with guys who have been around and done it before like myself and Hakeem and Rueben. I thought we would come in and pick it right up. It goes to show you that it takes a lot more than just that. You have to build a lot more continuity, you have to build a lot more trust mentally with your quarterback. I think it’s important. For a quarterback like Eli, for receivers like myself and guys like Hakeem and Rueben and Jerrel, you have to have that continuity, that consistency together over a period of time that’s going to continue to instill trust in Eli and us. The more comfortable Eli is with his receivers, where they’re going to be, their knowledge of the offense, their route running, how he sees how you run specific routes so he knows how to get you the ball, I think that’s huge in our minds to remain comfortable and for Eli to continue to trust us. It played a little bit of a part. In this league when you’re a veteran and you’ve been in the league that long, it shouldn’t take long for you to catch up, it shouldn’t take long for you to adjust. We’re not first-year, second-year players. Me and Hakeem are four-year, five-year guys, so we understood exactly how to come in and pick it up and be on the same page rather quickly. But I think it did play a little bit of a part in our continuity early on and throughout the length of the season.”
  • On if Nicks leaves the Giants: “He’s obviously been a big piece for us in the last years that he’s been with us. But I think we definitely always have the talent in our receiving room to be successful. I think that’s just a testament to how we drafted and how we got players to fit the mold to our offense. I think we can definitely be able to be successful if Hakeem has to move on. It’s something that we’re going to have to look at. And we hope not, but we’ll see how it goes.”

Chris Snee Says He Might Not Be Done Yet: Right guard Chris Snee told The New York Post on Tuesday that he might not be ready to retire. Snee has been troubled with significant elbow and hip issues the past three seasons. He was placed on Injured Reserve in early October with a torn labrum in his right hip that required surgery. The Post is reporting he also underwent elbow surgery in November. Snee’s 2014 cap value is roughly $11.75 million.

“Right now, my mind-set is getting my body 100 percent and we’ll see from there,” said Snee. “I love the game, I love everything about it. I missed it during the fall, but there’s a lot of factors that go into making a decision. One, we’ll see if I’m wanted and we’ll go from there…I’m recovering well. It’s been a long road. Two surgeries is not something I want to do, particularly during the season. It’s been a difficult fall, winter, but the worst is behind me and I feel really good.”

Snee also commented on the possibility of Mike Sullivan becoming the Giants’ new offensive coordinator. “He’s a fun guy to be around,” Snee said. “He’s a well-liked man and well-respected man.”

December 18, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report – 10 Miss Practice: Not practicing on Wednesday were RB Peyton Hillis (concussion), WR Victor Cruz (knee/concussion), WR Jerrel Jernigan (knee), OG James Brewer (ankle), OG David Diehl (knee), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder), DT Cullen Jenkins (shin/quad), CB Terrell Thomas (knee), CB Trumaine McBride (groin), and S Cooper Taylor (hamstring).

With the injuries to the offensive line, Head Coach Tom Coughlin was asked if he was wary about playing QB Eli Manning. “Matter of fact, we’ve talked about this,” said Coughlin. “(Eli) wants to play and he’s looking forward to playing and competing and having a better game. I wouldn’t expect anything different.”

November 6, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Not practicing on Wednesday were RB David Wilson (neck), WR Victor Cruz (neck),  CB Terrell Thomas (knee), and CB Corey Webster (groin).

“I wouldn’t call it a setback (with Cruz), but when a guy is not practicing, obviously, it’s an issue,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “They’re just going to hold him to make sure that he doesn’t have any further incidents today. He feels better, quite frankly. I think he probably could practice if we really needed him to practice today, but we’re going to err on the side of precaution here in hopes that he will be prepared to go (on Thursday).”

“No concern, just some precautionary stuff,” said Cruz. “The training staff wanted me to take this one off and take another day to heal and get better and just feel better about myself…No pain, very little discomfort. In the morning it’s a little stiff but other than that it’s no pain.”

RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring), DT Shaun Rogers (knee), and CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring) practiced on a limited basis.

TE Adrien Robinson (foot), who has not played in a game this season, fully practiced. Robinson hurt his foot in the preseason.

“It’ll be up to the coaches (if I play on Sunday),” said Robinson. “I’ve been practicing. I feel better. I’m ready to go. I’m real excited to be back…It was tough because I wasn’t expecting to be out this long. It just took time.”

LB Jon Beason Traded to New York Giants: The New York Giants have acquired LB Jon Beason from the Carolina Panthers by trade in exchange for a “late-round” draft pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Beason, who was drafted in the 1st round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Panthers and who has played in three Pro Bowls (2008-10), has had his career sidetracked with serious season-ending injuries in 2011 (ruptured left Achilles tendon) and 2012 (right ACL tear that required microfracture knee surgery). The Panthers benched him two weeks ago for ex-Giant Chase Blackburn.

This is the Giants’ first in-season trade since they traded for RB Ottis Anderson from the St. Louis Cardinals in 1986.

“It’s amazing,” said Beason after passing the Giants’ physical. “It doesn’t happen (often) with mid-season trades. But the one place I said if I wasn’t in Carolina where I wanted to be was with a great organization like the Giants with a winning tradition, leadership, a 4-3 scheme where I can come in right now. I think I can really come out and impact the season.

“I know I’ll come in tomorrow early and meet the coaches and I’ll get my linebacker coach (Jim Herrmann) and we’re going to cram. If they ask me to, I’ll dress (Sunday) and I’ll give everything I have…It’s just going to be terminology. I’m a smart player. I learn fast. Being a mike linebacker, a lot is on your plate. I think I actually thrive in that position. I’m going to get with coach as long as it takes and as fast as I can get it as soon as I want to play.”

The Giants play the Eagles on Sunday but also have a short week after that, playing the Bears on Thursday night.

“The turnaround is the tough part,” said Beason. “Those Thursday night games are always hard. We’ll see what Coach (Tom) Coughlin has and whatever he says that’s what I’ll do.”

Beason thought the Giants might have drafted him in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, but the Giants selected CB Aaron Ross instead.

“(The Giants) were one of the teams that brought me in and I knew they were high on me and I thought they were going to take me, but you know the draft,” Beason said.

“It’s hard (missing so many games the last two seasons), but you understand that it’s a process and you have to go through it and then once you come to grasps with it that you know you can’t do anything about it. You might as well say, ‘Let’s get the surgery done’ and now every day is building toward getting back out there and playing football. The injuries have been a problem, but I wouldn’t change one thing because I know they’re not going to define me.”

OG Chris Snee’s Season is Over: OG Chris Snee was placed on Injured Reserve on Friday. He will likely undergo surgery on his right hip to repair a torn labrum only months after undergoing offseason surgery on his left hip to repair a torn labrum and bone spurs.

“I’ve always been able to play through things, but clearly I couldn’t,” said Snee. “The best thing is for me to watch my team play and try to get my hip right…I’ve prided myself in playing through things and…I just can’t.”

Snee was asked if the injury might be career-ending. “That’s not something I’m thinking about right now,” replied Snee. “I’m honestly just trying to get over the frustration of this and deal with surgery and deal with rehab. I’ll think about that later.”

“I’ve always been a guy that by Friday could suit up and play,” said Snee. “I was kind of secretly hoping I’d wake up and things would feel differently, I would respond to the treatment and the medicine. It just didn’t happen. It’s frustrating. It’s just a new situation for me. I’ve always been able to play through things. Sometimes things nobody knew about, things that I kept to myself, but I had to be honest with everyone because it really got to the point where I was doing no good, to be honest.”

Injury Update – Giants Down Three Corners: Not practicing on Friday were DT Linval Joseph (ankle/knee), CB Corey Webster (hip), CB Aaron Ross (back), CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring), OC David Baas (neck), and TE Adrien Robinson (foot). Of this group, Webster is “doubtful” for the game on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles and the rest will not play.

DT Cullen Jenkins (knee/achilles), DT Shaun Rogers (back), LB Mark Herzlich (toe), CB Terrell Thomas (knee), and WR Louis Murphy (ankle) practiced on a limited basis. Jenkins and Murphy are “questionable” for the game while Rogers, Herzlich, and Thomas are “probable.”

DE Jason Pierre-Paul (knee), LB Jacquian Williams (knee), S Cooper Taylor (shoulder), and OT David Diehl (thumb) fully practiced. All four players are “probable” for the game.

Chris Snee Might Need Season-Ending Hip Surgery: According to various press reports, OG Chris Snee has a torn labrum in his left hip which is also impeding the joint. Snee had surgery on a torn labrum and bone spurs in his right hip in the offseason.

“This one has the pain, but he can’t move,” an unidentified source told Newsday. “If they don’t get the joint to move again, (surgery) is probably going to be the only option.”

“Yes, surgery is definitely an option,’’ an unidentified source told The New York Post. “The question is just if they can get the hip playable, like they did with the other one. He is a tough SOB, but if you can’t move, it doesn’t matter how tough you are. The last time, at least he was able to move.’’

Snee did not play in last weekend’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, but the time off apparently has not helped much. “(There’s) not a lot of improvement from the treatments,” the Newsday source said. “It is not looking too good right now.”

Meanwhile, The New York Post is also reporting that OC David Baas, who did not play last weekend because of a neck injury, is unlikely to play this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles.

New York Giants Waive RB Da’Rel Scott and Sign OC/OG Dallas Reynolds: The Giants have signed OC/OG Dallas Reynolds, who started 14 games for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012. To make room for Reynolds, the Giants have waived RB Da’Rel Scott.

Notes and Quotes: The Giants are last in the league in both offensive and defensive third down efficiency. They have converted 22.9 percent (11-of-48) of their third-down opportunities on offense. Meanwhile, Giants opponents have succeeded on 50 percent (30-of-60) of their third down attempts.

The Giants have allowed an NFL-high 146 points. Their opponents have scored at least 31 points in each of the first four games, the first time ever the Giants have allowed at least 31 points in four straight games in a single season.

S Antrel Rolle asking for fan support: “That’s something I want to ask for all of our great fans we have out there, just bring the enthusiasm, bring the excitement. We want to hear that loud noise, we want to hear that roar like we heard when we were making our Super Bowl run when we were playing against Atlanta. That was the loudest I’ve ever heard a stadium in my life. We need that same intensity from our fans. We know we haven’t given them much to get fighting for, to rah-rah-rah for, but just to bring it. We promise you we’re gonna bring our best.’’

September 30, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: DT Cullen Jenkins was wearing a protective boot on his right foot on Monday in the locker room. “I think just a little tendon something, knee and Achilles,” said Jenkins when asked about the injury. “Hopefully like I said, just a couple days, get this thing treated, and get back going.”

LB Mark Herzlich injured a toe in the game against the Kansas City Chiefs and also was in a protective boot.

“(Jenkins and Herzlich are) in a boot for ankle-type, toe-type reasons and hopefully it’s just something to restrict movement and they can come back and work this week,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin.

There was no word on other Giants injured in the game including DE Justin Tuck (neck), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (knee), CB Aaron Ross (back), and CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring).

New York Giants Re-Structure Chris Snee’s Contract Again: According to NFL Player Association (NFLPA) records, the New York Giants and OG Chris Snee appear to have agreed to another contract re-structuring in order to create immediate additional salary cap room in 2013. The move was probably made in order to sign FB John Conner last week.

Snee’s base 2013 base salary was reduced from $4.2 million to $1,164,286. The difference was probably made up in an additional pro-rated signing bonus over the final two years of his current contract.

According to OverTheCap.com, Snee’s cap hit in 2014 is now $11.75 million. If he is cut, the Giants will still lose $4.5 million in cap space due to dead money.

In early September, Snee’s 2013 base salary was reduced from $6.7 million to $4.2 million and his 2014 base salary was increased from $6.95 million to $7.2 million.

S Will Hill Eligible to Return This Week: S Will Hill, who is currently on the Reserve/Suspended List for violating the NFL’s policy on drug use, is eligible to return to the team this week. The Giants will have to make a roster move if they choose to add him to the 53-man roster.

September 24, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: According to Newsday, the MRI taken on OG Chris Snee’s hip showed no new damage, but if the pain does not subside, other options would have to be considered, including season-ending Injured Reserve.

“The hope is that it calms down and lets him get back to playing to his standard,” an unidentified source told Newsday. “If it doesn’t calm down, we are going to have to do something.”

Snee had offseason surgery on his hip. He decided to delay the surgery until after the Pro Bowl so he could participate in that game and was on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) List until August 6.

Meanwhile, The Star-Ledger is reporting that FB Henry Hynoski’s shoulder fracture is serious and may be season-ending.

RB Andre Brown (fractured leg), who is on short-term Injured Reserve, says he’s ahead of schedule on his rehab. Under the short-term IR rules, however, Brown cannot be added to the 53-man roster until after Week 8.

New York Giants Practice Squad Moves: The New York Giants have re-signed OT Steven “Sam” Baker and signed LB Ty Powell to the Practice Squad.

To make room for Baker and Powell, the Giants have terminated the Practice Squad contracts of  DE Matt Broha and WR Marcus Harris.

The Giants have rushed for 133 yards in the first three games. This is the first time in team history that the Giants have had 60 or fewer yards on the ground in three consecutive games.

DT Marvin Austin, who was waived by the Giants in the last round of cuts in early September, has signed with the Miami Dolphins.

“I know (Amukamara is) feeling better,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin on Monday. “He felt pretty good last night, to be honest with you. He didn’t seem to have any repercussions, but he does need to go through the protocol.”

New York Giants Re-Structure Contracts of Chris Snee and Steve Weatherford: As first anticipated by BBI cap analyst Optimus-NY, the Giants re-structured the contracts of OG Chris Snee and P Steve Weatherford on Wednesday.

Snee’s 2013 base salary of $6.7 million was reduced to $4.2 million. However, his 2014 base salary will increase from $6.95 million to $7.2 million.

Weatherford’s 2013 base salary of $1.825 was reduced to $925,000 with the rest converted into a bonus.

The moves created approximately $1.925 million in cap space.

New York Giants Pick Team Captains: QB Eli Manning, DE Justin Tuck, S Antrel Rolle, OG Chris Snee, and LS Zak DeOssie were voted team captains by their teammates for the 2013 NFL season. It is the sixth consecutive season Manning has been elected a captain, the fourth time for Tuck, and the third for DeOssie.

“These guys were all elected by the players,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “Am I happy they were selected? Yes, I am because I think the number one thing is always ‘team’ and people have to lead by example, first, and ‘well done is better than well said.’ Yet, through the course of the long and difficult, challenging season, you’re going to see an opportunity for people to show what they’re made of in good and bad and that’s where leadership comes from. Adversity, remember, makes you stronger, according to John Wooden.”

“They have demonstrated over the years, honestly, not just this fall, a true, true interest and concern in the well-being of our team, not their own individual thing. I think there’s tremendous growth in each individual. You watch and listen to Antrel, and I think that you know that his heart and mind is in, and has been in for quite some time, the right place. I just think they’re guys that work in different ways and have demonstrated exceptional leadership and have done more than their part. You open the door to the offensive line room and there’s one guy sitting behind that machine every time you peek in there and it’s 76 (Snee).

“You know where Eli stands. I think Tuck has come back this fall and really he’s not been very verbal, but he’s demonstrated and shown good example, and I think that’s really what the challenge was for Justin based on a year ago. And Zak has been steady and he has been, as a captain, is this his third year already, he has been very forthright and never leaves a stone unturned in terms of what he thinks with regard to his effort on special teams or his contributions in the meeting room.”

Andre Brown Placed on Short-Term Injured Reserve: The Giants have placed RB Andre Brown (fractured leg) on the Injured Reserve/Designated-to-Return List, or short-term Injured Reserve as it is more commonly known. Brown will not be able to practice for six weeks and he will not be allowed back on the active roster for eight weeks. Since the Giants have a bye in Week 9, Brown will basically be out until Week 10 of the regular season.

Teams can only use the IR/Designated-to-Return List option once per season.

Giants Sign Ojomo to 53-Man Roster; Add OL Steven Baker to Practice Squad: To fill the roster spot vacated by RB Andre Brown being moved to the Injured Reserve/Designated-to-Return List, the Giants signed DE Adewale Ojomo from the Practice Squad.

To fill Ojomo’s vacant spot, the Giants signed OL Steven “Sam” Baker to the Practice Squad.

Injury Update: Not practicing on Wednesday were OC David Baas (knee), OT David Diehl (thumb), and TE Adrien Robinson (foot).

FB Henry Hynoski (knee), WR Victor Cruz (heel), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back), and DE Damontre Moore (shoulder) were limited in practice.

“It felt good,” said Cruz after practice. “I was out there just running. I can’t think about it when I’m out there playing. I just have to go, because that’s the way I play and that’s the way I approach it every day. It’s been feeling good. My heel has been feeling right and now I’m just worried about getting the timing down with Eli, getting my tempo back. We’ll see how it goes from there.”

“I’ve been getting better and better every day,” said Pierre-Paul after practice. “I have to get my conditioning up. That’s the main part on my end and my stance is back, but most of all I’ve been getting better every day…I’m still on track. By Friday, I should know if I’m playing or not.”

CB Jayron Hosley (ankle) fully practiced.
