October 3, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report – Webster Has a Setback: Not practicing on Thursday were DT Linval Joseph (ankle/knee), DT Cullen Jenkins (knee/achilles), CB Corey Webster (hip), CB Aaron Ross (back), CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring), OC David Baas (neck), OG Chris Snee (hip), and TE Adrien Robinson (foot).

It looks like the Giants may be without both of their starting defensive tackles and three of their cornerbacks on Sunday.

Webster, who has missed the last two games, did not practice on Thursday after working on a limited basis on Wednesday. “(Webster) worked a couple of plays yesterday and came out today and he was sore, so they held him out,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin.

“(Joseph is) in a boot,” said Coughlin. “He actually has made pretty good progress, but at this point in time he does not have the green light.”

DT Shaun Rogers (back), LB Mark Herzlich (toe), and CB Terrell Thomas (knee) practiced on a limited basis.

DE Jason Pierre-Paul (knee), LB Jacquian Williams (knee), S Cooper Taylor (shoulder), and OT David Diehl (thumb) fully practiced.

Diehl to Start at Right Guard: David Diehl revealed on Thursday that he will start at right guard in place of James Brewer this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles. Will Beatty will remain at left tackle, Kevin Booth at left guard, Jim Cordle at center, and Justin Pugh at right tackle.

New York Giants Fall to 0-2: The New York Giants lost to the Denver Broncos 41-23 at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. With the defeat, the Giants have fallen to 0-2.

The game was competitive until late in the third quarter when the Broncos pulled away. But third-down inefficiency (1-for-11 on third down), red-zone inefficiency (1-of-3 inside the red zone), turnovers (four interceptions), and an inability to run the football (23 yards rushing) killed New York. In addition, the Giants’ defense allowed 416 total yards, including 109 yards rushing and never sacked QB Peyton Manning. All three phases failed as the Giants’ special teams allowed an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown that put the game out of reach, and P Steve Weatherford struggled (22 net yards per punt).

After the game, safety Antrel Rolle was asked if he felt the Giants were better than their record. “I can say what we are, but the record shows otherwise,” replied Rolle. “The record shows 0-2, so at this point, we’re an 0-2 team. It’s up to us what we’re going to do from this point on. We can either get in the tank, which is something that we will never, ever do, or we can go out and fight like I hope that we will do and like I see us going out there and doing. We have to pick it up. We have to pick it up in all three phases on the game, offensively, defensively, and special teams and make sure you clear up certain things because there are a lot of things that need to be clear.”

The Broncos received the football to start the game and easily drove 91 yards down field to the Giants’ 6-yard line. But the Giants’ defense forced their only turnover when DT Cullen Jenkins forced a fumble that S Ryan Mundy recovered in the end zone.

On the first play of New York’s first possession, QB Eli Manning hit WR Victor Cruz for a 51-yard completion, but the drive stalled at the Denver 18-yard line and the Giants settled for a 36-yard field goal by PK Josh Brown.

The score remained a 3-0 Giants until the second quarter as both teams exchanged punts twice. Denver began their fourth drive on the Giants’ 40-yard line. Four plays later, RB Knowshon Moreno broke off a 20-yard touchdown run. Early in the second quarter, the Broncos led 7-3.

After both teams exchanged punts again, the Giants started their fifth possession a Denver’s 43-yard line. However, the drive stalled at the 6-yard line and the Giants settled for a 24-yard field goal. Broncos 7 – Giants 6.

After the Giants’ defense forced a three-and-out, the Giants drove 37 yards in seven pays to set up a 41-yard field goal by Brown as the Giants regained the lead 9-7. Denver responded with an 8-play, 56-yard drive that set up a 42-yard field goal as Denver went back up 10-9. The Giants had a chance late in the second quarter to add more points as 34-yard pass to WR Hakeem Nicks and a 21-yard pass interference penalty set the Giants up at the Broncos 28-yard line with 16 seconds to go before intermission. But Manning’s deep pass for Nicks was intercepted in the end zone.

At halftime, the Broncos led 10-9.

In the second half, after a three-and-out by New York, the Broncos extended their advantage to 17-9 as Denver drove 53 yards in nine plays with the possession culminating in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Manning to WR Wes Welker. The Giants responded with a 9-play, 81-yard drive that resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Brandon Jacobs. With just over three minutes to play in the third quarter, the Giants had cut the score to 17-16.

But then the roof caved in as the Broncos scored 21 unanswered points in a matter of minutes, including a 7-play, 80-yard drive that finished with a 25-yard touchdown run by Moreno; a 5-play, 36-yard touchdown drive after Eli Manning’s second interception; and an 81-yard punt return by WR Trindon Holliday. With 10 minutes to play, the Giants trailed 38-16.

Eli Manning was picked two more times in the fourth quarter as the Giants desperately tried to get back into the game. New York did score with four minutes left as RB Da’Rel Scott caught a 23-yard touchdown pass. But it was far too little, far too late. Denver tacked on a late 47-yard field goal.

Eli Manning finished the game 28-of-49 for 362 yards, 1 touchdown, and 4 interceptions. Running backs David Wilson, Brandon Jacobs, and Da’Rel Scott combined for 23 yards on 19 carries (1.2 yards per carry). Victor Cruz caught 8 passes for 118 yards.

September 11, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report – David Baas Returns to Practice, but Da’Rel Scott Injures Knee: Not practicing on Wednesday were CB Prince Amukamara (concussion), LB Dan Connor (neck), OT David Diehl (thumb), and TE Adrien Robinson (foot).

“(Amukamara) does feel pretty good, but he’s got to follow the protocol,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin.

OC David Baas (knee) and DE Damontre Moore (shoulder) were limited in practice. This was Baas’ first action since injuring his MCL in the second preseason game.

Baas was asked if he might play this weekend. “That’s my plan,” Baas said. “Today was a big step forward and we’re just going to keep monitoring it day by day. Last week, it didn’t work out, I prepared myself like I was going to play. This week, I’m going to do the exact same thing…I feel like we definitely made some progress today.”

RB Da’Rel Scott left practice early with a knee injury. According to press reports, the MRI showed no structural damage, but Scott will be monitored for swelling in the knee.

All three are officially listed as “questionable” for the game.

The only players to not make the trip – OC David Baas (knee), OT David Diehl (thumb), and TE Adrien Robinson (foot) – have already been ruled out of the game.

September 6, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Not practicing on Friday were OC David Baas (knee), OT David Diehl (thumb), and TE Adrien Robinson (foot). All three players have officially been ruled “out” of Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

FB Henry Hynoski (knee), WR Victor Cruz (heel), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back), and DE Damontre Moore (shoulder) were limited in practice. Hynoski, Pierre-Paul, and Moore are “questionable” for the game while Cruz is “probable.”

“No, (it won’t be a game-time decision with Pierre-Paul),” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “Whatever we make our minds up. It’s not going to be game time. We’ll make up our minds before that. The medical people will have more to say about that, I’m sure…We’ll just take all of the information, based on the three days of work, listen to the medical people again, and then make that decision…He’ll be on the trip. So he can get in my ear longer. I‘d hate to be that far away from him, then he’d have to call me on the phone.”

“I’m going to make the trip,” said Pierre-Paul. “It’s going to be a game-time decision. I’m going to ask the coaching staff and I’m going to ask the coach. That’s basically it.”

“My conditioning is still down, man,” said Pierre-Paul. “It’s still down. I’ve been trying to get it up and that’s a big part, too, so I’m not going to put my team in jeopardy if I know I can’t play.”

“I feel good,” said Hynoski. “Everything’s going well. I had a great week. Every day, I feel more comfortable out there. No issues with pain or any setbacks as far as that’s concerned.”

“I’ve been practicing full-go,” said Cruz. “I’ve been limited in certain areas but I’ve been pretty much practicing in getting my footing down and cutting and things like that and everything feels pretty normal. I just want the doctors to give one last look at it and tell me what they think and then we’ll go from there.”

CB Jayron Hosley (ankle) fully practiced. Hosley is “probable” for the game.

New York Giants Re-Structure Contracts of Chris Snee and Steve Weatherford: As first anticipated by BBI cap analyst Optimus-NY, the Giants re-structured the contracts of OG Chris Snee and P Steve Weatherford on Wednesday.

Snee’s 2013 base salary of $6.7 million was reduced to $4.2 million. However, his 2014 base salary will increase from $6.95 million to $7.2 million.

Weatherford’s 2013 base salary of $1.825 was reduced to $925,000 with the rest converted into a bonus.

The moves created approximately $1.925 million in cap space.

New York Giants Pick Team Captains: QB Eli Manning, DE Justin Tuck, S Antrel Rolle, OG Chris Snee, and LS Zak DeOssie were voted team captains by their teammates for the 2013 NFL season. It is the sixth consecutive season Manning has been elected a captain, the fourth time for Tuck, and the third for DeOssie.

“These guys were all elected by the players,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “Am I happy they were selected? Yes, I am because I think the number one thing is always ‘team’ and people have to lead by example, first, and ‘well done is better than well said.’ Yet, through the course of the long and difficult, challenging season, you’re going to see an opportunity for people to show what they’re made of in good and bad and that’s where leadership comes from. Adversity, remember, makes you stronger, according to John Wooden.”

“They have demonstrated over the years, honestly, not just this fall, a true, true interest and concern in the well-being of our team, not their own individual thing. I think there’s tremendous growth in each individual. You watch and listen to Antrel, and I think that you know that his heart and mind is in, and has been in for quite some time, the right place. I just think they’re guys that work in different ways and have demonstrated exceptional leadership and have done more than their part. You open the door to the offensive line room and there’s one guy sitting behind that machine every time you peek in there and it’s 76 (Snee).

“You know where Eli stands. I think Tuck has come back this fall and really he’s not been very verbal, but he’s demonstrated and shown good example, and I think that’s really what the challenge was for Justin based on a year ago. And Zak has been steady and he has been, as a captain, is this his third year already, he has been very forthright and never leaves a stone unturned in terms of what he thinks with regard to his effort on special teams or his contributions in the meeting room.”

Injury Update: Not practicing on Thursday were OC David Baas (knee), OT David Diehl (thumb), and TE Adrien Robinson (foot).

FB Henry Hynoski (knee), WR Victor Cruz (heel), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back), and DE Damontre Moore (shoulder) were limited in practice.

CB Jayron Hosley (ankle) fully practiced.

New York Giants Must Reduce Roster to 53: By 6:00PM on Saturday, the Giants must make at least 22 roster moves in order to reduce their roster from 75 to 53.

August 30, 2013 New York Giants Injury Report: Various press sources are reporting that RB Andre Brown, who fractured his left leg in the preseason game against the Patriots, will miss 4-6 weeks. Head Coach Tom Coughlin was less definitive. “Not really (any timetable), said Coughlin. “Not until I hear some more information. There’s MRI’s and that type of stuff going on so, when we know, you’ll know.”

Coughlin was asked if Brown could be placed on Reserve/Designated-to-Return List (temporary Injured Reserve). “He could be. Yeah. Sure,” replied Coughlin. If Brown is placed on the Designated-to-Return List, he would be ineligible to return until for eight weeks. And the Giants could only put him on temporary IR after he is first on the 53-man roster, meaning another player would have to lose a roster spot first. Teams can only use the temporary IR option once per season.

TE Adrien Robinson sprained his left foot in the preseason game against the Patriots. “Supposedly a sprain,” said Coughlin. “At this point in time and, again, you could come back in five minutes and I could say it’s a different story. There’s no surgery or anything like that to talk about…It’s not exactly mid-foot (sprain), it’s off to the side a little bit. I think he tried to turn around at halftime and go last night, but he couldn’t really get up on his toes well enough to be able to do that. ”

LB Dan Connor suffered a burner in the preseason game against the Patriots, but is not expected to miss any time. “Just shoulder tightness, nothing terrible,’’ Connor said. “I could play today, I could have played a lot more (against the Patriots).’’

S Tyler Sash suffered a concussion in preseason game against the Patriots. No word yet on how much time he might miss.

WR Victor Cruz, who suffered a heel contusion in the preseason game against the Jets, says he hopes to be able to play in the season opener against the Cowboys but is unsure if the team will let him. “I hope so,” said Cruz. “We’re still going to gauge it throughout the weekend. I’m still going to be coming in for treatment or whatnot, so we’ll see how it goes. Still doctors that have to say it’s OK. The training staff is taking it slow, but I’d like to practice and get some live work in on Monday if possible.”

OC David Baas, who sprained the MCL in one of his knees in the preseason game against the Colts, says he is improving but Baas is not sure if he will be ready for the season-opener against the Cowboys. “It’s responded really well,” Baas said. “My doctors have said they are very happy with my progress. And, like I said, this is something that we’re just going to continue to work on and keep pushing it to its max and hope for the best. We’ll take it day-to-day.”

Surgery for S Stevie Brown, who tore the ACL in his left knee in the preseason game against the Jets, has not yet been scheduled. “It’s very disappointing,” said Brown. “You work all summer getting ready for the season and just a freak accident like that to happen definitely sucks.”
