August 4, 2014 New York Giants Injury Report: As reported earlier today, RB David Wilson’s NFL career with the New York Giants is over. Doctors have advised Wilson to never play football again. The Giants will place him on season-ending Injured Reserve.

“You naturally feel bad, you feel down,” said Head Coach Tom Coughlin. “It is just a natural thing. I have to say when David came in and we sat and talked, he is such an up-beat young man. He is so positive. The smile is still on his face, even though he has received this kind of news…The way he expressed it was, ‘God must have something in mind for me. I want no pity. I want no one feeling sorry for me. I am not going to be down about this. No one will catch me in that frame of mind.’…I thought that was a wonderful thing for him to say and a great lesson for all of us.”

“Once a Giant, always a Giant,” said Coughlin. “He heard it earlier in the week and it is true. He’s a Giant. He’ll always be a Giant.”

The Giants did survive an injury scare to TE Daniel Fells, who is battling for a starting spot. It was thought Fells had sprained his knee or worse, but Coughlin said the injury is a bone bruise to the knee.

Notes and Quotes: Head Coach Tom Coughlin on WR Corey Washington:

Wasn’t that some play by that kid? He has done that in practice a couple of times, where he has done some things that were pretty spectacular that got our attention – one as a gunner, just flat-out running and splitting the double-team and then moving on down the field to make a play on the punt returner. He did that in practice and was recognized and very noticeable, and he has made some of those catches here on the practice field, where he has gone up over the top of people and caught the ball.

The Giants will return to practice on Tuesday from 5:40-7:50 at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. The workout is closed to the public because of the One Direction concert at MetLife Stadium.

July 27, 2014 New York Giants Injury Report: LB Jon Beason (foot – PUP), WR Odell Beckham (hamstring), WR Trindon Holliday (leg), and TE Xavier Grimble (hamstring) did not practice.

Head Coach Tom Coughlin was asked if it was a little disappointing that Beckham has not practiced yet at camp. “It’s more than that,” replied Coughlin. “You’re trying to put a team together. We saw too much of that in the spring. It’d be nice to get him back practicing. He actually looks pretty good moving around, catching the ball, not favoring anything. I’m just hoping it’s a real short amount of time.”

“(The trainers are) not going to let him go if he’s in the danger of hurting himself,” said Coughlin. “That’s all there is to it. I can stand there and fight all I want, but it’s not going to happen. When they feel he can go and not risk any recurring injury, they’ll let him go…I think there has been (some improvement).”

Coughlin on Holliday: “He did something catching a punt. Hopefully, it’s not much.”

Coughlin on Grimble: “Minor hamstring strain a couple of days ago.”

With New York Giants training camp beginning next week, BigBlueInteractive.com concludes our break down of each of the team’s positional groups. We finish by looking at this year’s special teams.

POSITIONAL BREAKDOWN: Special Teams

2013 YEAR IN REVIEW: For the most part, the specials of the New York Giants in 2013 were quite poor. The exception was PK Josh Brown who made 23-of-26 field goals (88.5 percent) with a long of 52 yards. In addition, half of Brown’s kickoffs (35-of-70) resulted in touchbacks. P Steve Weatherford was inconsistent. He started off poorly but improved as the season wore on. In 2013, Weatherford, averaged 46.9 yards per punt with a net average of 38.2. The usually reliable long-snapper Zak DeOssie had a poor snap against the Eagles that resulted in a touchdown.

Punt coverage was terrible. The Giants were 3rd-worst in the NFL in opposing punt return average (13.6 yards per return) and allowed three punts to be returned for touchdowns.

Kickoff coverage was better as the Giants were 9th-best in the NFL, allowing an average of 21.8 yards per return.

The Giants return game was not good. The Giants were 26th in the NFL in punt returns, averaging only 7.2 yards per return. WR Rueben Randle was the primary punt returner, averaging 8.2 yards per return with a long of 32 yards.

The Giants were 27th in the NFL in kickoff returns, averaging only 21.2 yards per return. The Giants tried a number of players with similar results, including RB Michael Cox (21.8 yards per return) and WR Jerrel Jernigan. RB David Wilson (24.7) had a bit more success on his limited number of returns.

In sum, the return yardage differential between the Giants and their opponents was too great, making it tougher for the Giants offense and defense and easier for the oppositions’ offense and defense. The Giants also gave up four special teams touchdowns.

ADDITIONS/SUBTRACTIONS: The primary punter, kicker, and long snapper all return though it appears that Josh Brown will face a bit of a challenge from strong-legged place kicker Brandon McManus.

On paper, it appears the Giants dramatically improved their stable of returners with the additions of Trindon Holliday, Quintin Demps, and Odell Beckham, Jr.

Holliday has averaged over 27 yards per kickoff return and 9 yards per punt return in his career, including a total of six return touchdowns the last two seasons (three kickoff, three punt). Demps has also averaged over 27 yards per kick return and has two career kickoff return touchdowns. Beckham was a dynamic kickoff and punt returner at LSU.

Who will form the cover teams and blockers on returns remains to be seen. Newcomers CB Zack Bowman (ex-Chicago Bears) and CB Bennett Jackson (Notre Dame) have strong special teams reputations.

TRAINING CAMP STORY LINES: Trindon Holliday is a home-run threat every time he touches the football as his six career return touchdowns in the last two seasons indicate, including two returns for touchdowns against the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs. However, he has major fumbling issues (10 lost in the last two seasons). Can the Giants improve his ball security?

Will David Wilson, if he is medically cleared (neck), be allowed to compete in the kickoff return game? Just two years ago, he set a team record with 1,533 kickoff return yards, averaging 26.9 yards per return. Same question regarding Odell Beckham…will the Giants seriously allow him to compete as a punt returner?

Based on comments from the coaches, Brandon McManus is more than an extra leg so his competition with Josh Brown will be more interesting than usual.

It’s not sexy, but the Giants have to find players who can do a better job of blocking for the returners and covering opposing returners. They need some headhunters out there.

ON THE BUBBLE: Trindon Holliday if he doesn’t fix his fumbling issues or show more than he has to date at wide receiver. There will only be one roster spot for Josh Brown vs. Brandon McManus. Brown is the reliable, experienced veteran, but he’s 35. McManus has the big leg but is a big unknown.

FROM THE POSITIONAL COACH: Tom Quinn on the gunners:  “(Zack) Bowman, (Bennett) Jackson, we’re really excited about those two. Charles James continues to do well so it will be exciting to see those guys run down and cover punts.”

Quinn on Trindon Holliday: “His speed’s an asset, that’s for sure. He’s a strong guy for his size, ball security obviously will be his biggest focus once we start putting pads on and start knocking him around a little bit.”

Quinn on Brandon McManus: “I really like McManus, I liked him coming out. He went to Indy for last training camp and preseason and I thought he was really a good kicker coming out of Temple. He’s kicked in the northeast at a high level, he did all three so I think he’s got a real big upside once it all starts clicking for him.”

Quinn on Quintin Demps: “Demps, we’re real excited to have him. He’s been consistent in this league and explosive. He’s a legitimate number one kickoff returner for us. He runs with good size and he has a real good understanding of the schemes. He’s been great with all teams. A real leader, coming in likely to start and he’ll be able to contribute on special teams.”

PREDICTIONS:

Eric Kennedy – I may go down in flames with this prediction but I think Trindon Holliday finds a home with the Giants both a less mistake-prone kickoff/punt returner and factor on offense as a role player. I think the Josh Brown vs. Brandon McManus battle could be very telling in terms of where this team actually thinks it is as viable Super Bowl competitor. If they believe they are rebuilding, the choice may be McManus.

Connor Hughes – It’s hard to think of a unit that was worse than the Giants’ offensive line last year, but the special teams sure give them a run for their money. Truly, things couldn’t have gotten much worse for Tom Quinn’s squad and there is only up to go from here. I’m very, very high on the addition of Trindon Holliday and Quintin Demps. While Demps may not have the touchdown returns, if he’s able to get the Giants the ball on the 30-35 yard line regularly it’ll pay huge dividends. Holliday, meanwhile, is the little spark plug the Giants have never really had on special teams.

During their prime, Willie Ponder and Domenik Hixon each were explosive, but none can match what Holliday can do when he’s ‘on.’ The ex-Bronco and Texan is electric and will take at least one to the house this year. If he can hold on to the ball…he may turn out to be one of the bigger acquisitions the Giants made this offseason.

The Giants’ coverage unit should also see improvements this year. Zack Bowman has excelled in the role throughout his career and Bennett Jackson had similar success in college. Barring injuries, I’m expecting to see vast improvements from the special teams.

Giants Officially Waive David Baas, Designate Him Post-June 1 Cut

New York Giants Officially Waive David Baas, Designate Him Post-June 1 Cut: The New York Giants have waived/failed physical center David Baas. According to the team’s press release, both the neck and knee injuries that Baas suffered last year are still issues. Baas said he may still need surgery on the neck.

Baas was set to make $4.75 million in salary in 2014 and count $8.225 million against the team’s 2014 salary cap. According to press reports, even though Baas has actually been waived now, he has been designated a post-June 1 cut. That means $3.225 million of the $6.45 million in dead money will now account against the 2015 salary cap. In the short-term, in 2014, the Giants will now “save” $5 million against the cap.

“I haven’t lost that drive, I haven’t lost that desire to play football,” said Baas. “But sometimes other things are more important, and we’ve come to that crossroads. The thing that takes precedence right now is my health…It’s part of the business. It’s something that you prepare for and you just kind of move on from there.

“The Giants have been absolutely fantastic. They definitely have changed mine and my family’s lives forever. Once we get the health issues taken care of, we’ll go from there, and maybe there’s another chance (to play). Coming back to the Giants, who knows? They’ve just been really great and the medical staff has been excellent. I enjoyed playing for (Head Coach) Tom Coughlin. I wish Tom Coughlin could have been my head coach my entire career. That would have been nice. (Offensive Line Coach Pat) Flaherty and everybody, they’ve just been awesome. I can’t say enough good things about the Giants organization, the owners and everybody. It’s part of the game. I thank them and definitely am grateful for everything they’ve done.”

Baas originally signed with the Giants as an unrestricted free agent from the San Francisco 49ers in July 2011. But he has been plagued with one injury after the other during his tenure with the team. He missed five games in 2011 (burner, knee, headaches). After the 2012 season, he had surgeries to his ankle, knee, hip, elbow, and shoulder. In 2013, he missed 13 games with the knee and neck issues.

“It’s been a tough road with injuries,” Baas said. “I’ve been able to battle through them for most of the time.”

As for the possibility of neck surgery, Baas said, “I’m actually going to get another opinion next week. I’ve gotten a couple different people saying that they would recommend it if I ever wanted to play again. It’s definitely something I have to think through. That’s what we’re going to do. I don’t want to make a rash decision and pay for it later, so we’ll listen to the experts.  The knee is a little bit disappointing, because it’s taking a little longer to recover. It’s something we’ll continue to try and get healthy.”

“I love the game of football,” said Baas. “My heart is still into it, but sometimes you’ve got to put your health and your future with your family and all that stuff first. We’re just gathering all the information right now and we’ll see. The Giants had to do what they had to do, and now I can focus on getting my knee better and I can also really gather all my information that I need for my neck and figure out what the best decision is.”

Baas also addressed the possibility that his career may be over.

“I got to play for two very good organizations, the 49ers and the Giants, and to get to win a Super Bowl with the Giants,” Baas said. “I met a lot of great people, established a lot of great relationships. I’ll forever be a Giant, and obviously when you come back and talk about the Super Bowl and all that stuff, it’s like you haven’t missed a beat. I’ll be looking forward to those moments. We’ll see what happens.”

New York Giants Confirm Re-Signing Stevie Brown and Josh Brown: The New York Giants have confirmed that they have re-signed unrestricted free agents safety Stevie Brown and place kicker Josh Brown.

New York Giants Waive LB Marcus Dowtin: The New York Giants also announced that they have waived linebacker Marcus Dowtin who spent time both on the Giants’ Practice Squad and 53-man roster last season.

Giants Sign Geoff Schwartz, Rashad Jennings, and O’Brien Schofield

New York Giants Sign Geoff Schwartz, Rashad Jennings, and O’Brien Schofield: According to multiple press reports, the New York Giants have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent guard/tackle Geoff Schwartz (Kansas City Chiefs). Details of the contract are not yet known.

According to the player himself, unrestricted free agent running back Rashad Jennings (Oakland Raiders) was to sign his contract with the Giants on Tuesday night. Details of the deal are not yet known.

According to multiple press reports, the New York Giants have signed unrestricted free agent linebacker O’Brien Schofield (Seattle Seahawks). The contract is reportedly a 2-year, $8 million deal.

Unrestricted free agent safety Ryan Mundy (New York Giants) has signed with the Chicago Bears. It is a 2-year deal but the financial terms are not yet known.

March 10, 2014 New York Giants Free Agent News and Rumors: Here is the latest on the free agent front for the New York Giants:

  • The NFL Network is reporting that the Giants have offered contracts to unrestricted free agents defensive end/tackle Arthur Jones (Baltimore Ravens) and safety Ryan Mundy (New York Giants).
  • The Star-Ledger is reporting that the Giants are one of seven teams to express interest in unrestricted free agent tight end Andrew Quarless (Green Bay Packers).
  • The New York Daily News is reporting that the Giants have expressed interest in unrestricted free agent tight ends Brandon Pettigrew (Detroit Lions) and Ed Dickson (Baltimore Ravens).
  • The New York Daily News is reporting that the Giants have expressed interest in unrestricted free agent centers Evan Dietrich-Smith (Green Bay Packers) and Brian de la Puente (New Orleans Saints). The paper says the interest in Dietrich-Smith is “serious.”
  • The New York Daily News is reporting that unrestricted free agent linebacker Jon Beason (New York Giants) is likely to test the free agent market on Tuesday rather than re-sign with the Giants before then.
  • Newsday is reporting that no deal is imminent between the Giants and unrestricted free agent safety Stevie Brown, who is expected now to test the open market.

The Giants are known to be one of the teams who have expressed an interest in his services. However, NJ.com is reporting that Verner’s asking price has gotten too high for the Giants.

NFL teams have been allowed to talk contract with the agents of unrestricted free agents since Saturday. These players can officially sign contracts with new teams starting at 4:00PM ET on Tuesday.

New York Giants Close to Re-Signing Josh Brown and Trumaine McBride: The Star-Ledger is reporting that the Giants are close to re-signing unrestricted free agent place kicker Josh Brown (New York Giants).

The Bergen Record is reporting that the Giants are close to a new 2-year deal with unrestricted free agent cornerback Trumaine McBride (New York Giants).

Details on Contract for Mark Herzlich: According to NFL Players Association records, linebacker Mark Herzlich’s contract is a 1-year deal with a $775,000 base salary. The Daily News is reporting that the contract also includes a $225,000 in roster and workout bonuses.

New York Giants Meeting with Ben McAdoo Rescheduled for Monday: Due to inclement weather disrupting travel plans, the New York Giants meeting with Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo was rescheduled for Monday according to The Bergen Record. McAdoo, who is interviewing for the Giants vacant offensive coordinator position, was originally scheduled to meet with the team on Saturday.

The Giants have already met with Mike Sullivan (ex-Tampa Bay offensive coordinator), Dowell Loggains (ex-Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator), and Karl Dorrell (ex-Houston Texans quarterbacks coach). The Giants may also interview other candidates for offensive coordinator.

Jon Beason Wants to Return to the New York Giants: Linebacker Jon Beason, who will be an unrestricted free agent when free agency begins on March 11, told The New York Daily News on Friday that he wants to re-sign with the Giants. The Giants acquired Beason via trade on October 4th from the Carolina Panthers for a 7th round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

“I know it’s something that we both want to get done,” said Beason. “(The Giants) expressed interest that they want me back and I told them that we want to be back. The thing about it is, it’s got to work for both parties. Though you anticipate that it will, you never know. So for me right now it’s a waiting game. It’s early. The season is still going on and a lot of things will happen between now and March 11. So all is well. I’ll be playing ball next year and hopefully I’m a Giant.”

Injury Update on LT Will Beatty and RB David Wilson: General Manager Jerry Reese was asked about LT Will Beatty, who broke his leg in the game against the Washington Redskins on Sunday. “We think he’ll be back and he’ll be ready to play next season. We do think that,” said Reese. “From early reviews, we think Will will be back. We think he will be back and hopefully he will be back and he can get going and have a good offseason as well. He didn’t play as well as we hoped he’d play. I think he’d own that as well. Hopefully he can get back, get healthy and go on and have a great off-season and be a good left tackle.”

Reese was also asked about the future status of RB David Wilson, who was placed on Injured Reserve in November with a potentially career-threatening neck injury.

“Those neck things, you have to wait around,” said Reese. “Those discs they have, sometimes they can shrink and it takes time for them to shrink. They did that and we’re waiting. At the beginning of the year, we’ll have another consultation with him, to see if surgery would be a possibility for him. That could be a possibility and if he has the surgery, I think the prognosis is that he’ll be ready to play next fall, if he has his surgery.”

Reese was then asked if the injury was career-threatening. “When you talk about necks, there’s always a possibility,” responded Reese. “We’re hopeful and the earlier reports that I’ve gotten, doctors do think they can fix this and he’ll be able to play…I think we’ll have to have some contingency plans at the running back position. I don’t think you go into the next season saying David Wilson’s going to be our number one, starting running back. I don’t think you can do that. The guy is coming off of a neck surgery, if he decides to have it.”

Giants Sign Eight Players to Reserve/Future Contracts: The Giants signed the following eight players to reserve/future contracts on Monday:

  • RB Kendall Gaskins
  • WR Marcus Harris
  • OT Steven Baker
  • DE Kendrick Adams
  • CB Travis Howard
  • CB Junior Mertile
  • CB Chaz Powell
  • CB Ross Weaver

All eight players ended the season on the Giants’ practice squad.
